Take more steps each day, adding fruit to your cereal, having an extra glass of water or saying no to that second helping of buttery mashed potatoes. So, what else can you be doing to live healthy? Your first order of business is to start exercising.

One of the biggest reasons we're have a weight problem these days is because we sit around too much. We know we need to exercise, but we have so many excuses not to do it. We're too busy, don't know where to start, we're not motivated or we're afraid we'll injure ourselves or we're afraid that exercise has to be vigorous for what our bodies can handle. The truth is, everything counts and the more you move, the healthier you'll be.

It's great if you can spend time exercising - Meaning you're sweating, working in your target heart rate zone and/or doing something to strengthen your body. But it doesn't always have to be that way. Moderate activities like chores, gardening and walking can make a difference.

Keeping the heart and blood vessels healthy reduces the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, a new report suggests.

According to the paper released by the Global Council on Brain Health (GCBH), cardiovascular problems increase the risk of memory, thinking problems and dementia.

These include factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, an inactive lifestyle and obesity.

Researchers say that the more cardiovascular problems a person has, the greater the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

The Brain-Heart Connection report summarises various research on the topic by the GCBH.

It sets out that factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking, which damage blood vessel walls over time, likely increase the risk of dementia, including Alzheimers disease.

These conditions and behaviours can directly damage the brain through tiny strokes, and their effects will add up over time, according to the paper.

Scientists say it remains unclear how these tiny strokes contribute to the development of Alzheimers disease and other dementias.

However, they agree that regardless of the exact mechanism, keeping the blood vessels and blood flow healthy is key to maintaining your brain function as you age.

A heart-healthy lifestyle that includes plenty of exercise and a healthy diet reduces the risk of cognitive decline, the report suggests.

The GCBH also concluded there is strong evidence to show that it is never too late to start treating those conditions or taking steps to help reduce the risks, even for those in their 70s or 80s.

The earlier a healthy lifestyle is adopted and any cardiovascular problems are treated, the better for a lifetime of a healthier brain.

Caroline Abrahams, charity director of Age UK, said: Learning more about how to preserve good brain health later in life is extremely important.

Diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels also affect the blood vessels in the brain and can cause damage there.

The good news is that we can take steps to reduce our chances of cognitive decline and we can take positive action to help prevent cognitive decline and dementia.

Having better control of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, reducing the intake of salt and excessive alcohol, stopping smoking and taking steps to reduce the risk of having a stroke which is one of the strongest risk factors for dementia all help to reduce that risk.

The experts make a number of recommendations, which include being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight with a balance of good diet and exercise, and making time to manage stress levels.

Change, especially when it involves social distancing, is hard for everyone, and its often very stressful. A certain amount of panic is normal, but how do you avoid spinning completely out of control?

Here are five ways to help manage the unique stress of the coronavirus outbreak.

While its very normal to feel anxious and stressed about the uncertainty of this pandemic, recognize that this is a universal worry, and we are all in this together. Life now has changed, temporarily, and everyone must adjust the new rules of daily living.

Accepting that social distancing is necessary to protect us is an impactful way to reduce stress. Tell yourself, even aloud, that this is not forever. Our normal way of life will return, and we need to feel empowered by what we are able to do.

Make a list of the things that are under your control, like taking recommended health precautions (frequent hand-washing, sneezing/coughing into our elbow or tissue, respecting the six-foot distance rule, etc.) and work on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When you sense your stress creeping up (and its normal to come and go), pick a go-to activity that helps distract and relax you. It might be exercise, a walk, calling a friend, cleaning out a closet, or deep breathing. Pick one or two activities that work for you.

Maintaining a daily schedule will go a long way to reducing stress. And if you have children at home, its doubly important. Set a daily wake-up time, and specific times for work/school, meals, exercise, household chores and leisure. And establish a regular bed-time. A consistent routine will go a long way to keeping your stress at bay.

How to avoid bad habits during social distancing and isolation – CBC.ca

For the time being, most Canadians are facing some level of social isolation, from basic social distancing practices to quarantine. While these measures are necessary, the combination of isolation, disruptions to the normal structure of our lives, and a constant stream of worrying news from the outside world can make for challenging times. In these kinds of circumstances, our first impulse might be to pour ourselves a drink, fire up the Xbox, or let Netflix autoplay and have its way with us for a few days.

To help us understand how to avoid these pitfalls and maintain a healthy lifestyle in the coming weeks, we reached out to Dr. Jonathan Stea, a clinical psychologist who specializes in mental health and substance abuse, and Evan Newton, an addictions counsellor at Bellwood Health Services.

They agree that the situation facing Canadians is likely to lead to some difficult emotions such as boredom, anxiety, sadness, and anger, and have offered some advice for coping with these feelings and for staying on track in the weeks ahead.

Sleep well, eat well, and exercise

Stea says, "Social distancing practices and quarantine recommendations from health authorities need to be respected and followed because they are the absolute right public health interventions for the greater good."

Even if we can't follow our normal routines, there's still important work to do. "During these times, self-care is paramount," says Stea, "do your best to get adequate sleep, nutrition, and exercise, as well as to reduce boredom by maintaining (where possible) your hobbies and leisure activities." This may involve some creativity and resourcefulness given the circumstances, but an overall healthy lifestyle is the foundation for coping with all of life's challenges

Newton singles out physical exercise as especially important. "Research shows exercise has a huge effect on mental health. 20-25 minutes of intense cardiovascular exercise goes a long way to helping us stay sane and feel good. Also, if you get it done, this means you've kind of earned your Netflix and what-not."

Stay social (remotely)

"Social distancing doesn't have to mean being disconnected," says Newton. He recommends you stay in touch with your friends and loved ones and really anyone else who you could reach out to. This is one situation where you and your friends around the world will be facing a similar situation. "We're a social species and we benefit from that support."

Even though we should stay physically apart, it's never been easier to be remotely connected. This doesn't just mean texts and phone calls. Lots of activities, from games to group hangouts can be moved online.

Manage your media consumption

It's essential to stay informed about current public health recommendations. However, constant pandemic coverage and online fear-mongering could become counterproductive. To avoid being taken in by misinformation, Stea recommends focusing on trusted health authorities such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Health Canada, and the Centre for Disease Control. Newton advises limiting the time you spend on news or social media.

Set goals and make a plan

One of the best ways to avoid going off the rails is to lay down rails in the first place. Newton recommends setting out some simple goals you'd like to accomplish and a basic schedule for doing it. "I try to look at this as an opportunity. There are so many books I want to read and projects I want to work on," he says. When you're setting goals, he advises, "Be specific and be concrete. If your goal is not attainable, you'll start to not do it, then start beating yourself up over it, leading to all-or-nothing thinking."

Know your behaviour patterns

"Each person has their own unique set of unhelpful behaviour patterns that they might sometimes act out during times of stress," says Stea. Some people may escape into video games, others might reach for the wine. "Be honest with yourself," says Newton, "ask what behaviours you want to avoid, and which ones you have a propensity toward."

Since our behaviours come in patterns, there are usually signs that the behaviours we really want to avoid might be around the corner. Newton explained this in terms of his work treating addiction, "When we're trying to avoid relapse, it's not just about not drinking it's about living right." Relapse is usually preceded by other signs that are part of an overall pattern. It could be going out more, staying up late, or even not cleaning the cat litter. Tune into these patterns so you can recognize and address them in good time.

Know and manage your thought patterns

This isn't just about behaviour, the combination of isolation and stress can lead to unhelpful thought patterns. "It's easy to get mired in your thoughts," says Newton. "A lot of mental health conditions are positive feedback loops. Anxiety leads to avoidance which creates more anxiety. Depression leads to rumination, which makes you more depressed. If you're not actively trying to break out of them, they'll self-perpetuate." Getting out of the house, working, socializing are just the kinds of things that break these patterns, so disruption to these activities can make us more vulnerable. This is one reason to try to impose some kind of new structure on your life. But it also means you should pay extra attention to your feelings and thoughts.

If you think you notice some signs of a negative pattern of thought or behaviour, Stea says it's time to think about "a way to throw a wrench into the pattern to alter its course." This could mean talking through your issues with a trusted family member or friend or mental health professional. In other cases, it might do the trick to just make a point to exercise and get the endorphins flowing regularly. Either way, pay attention to your actions and your thoughts and act early.

Build accountability

Part of the reason people are more effective in a good work environment is that they feel visible and accountable to others. At some level, you know that other people in the workplace will notice if you disappear into a social media scroll-hole for three hours.

Newton says that setting up some accountability in other areas of your life also works. If you're planning on spending the next few weeks studying a new language or fixing up the garage, post it on social media. For other goals, it might be more helpful to enlist the people close to you. If you're worried about drinking too much or letting your fitness slide, Newton recommends asking the people close to you to keep an eye on your behaviour and to come down (gently) on you when you fall out of line. Just knowing someone else is watching can go a long way to keeping you on track.

Here’s an insider’s look at those weight-loss resolutions – The Triplicate

January 1s arrival often is accompanied by steadfast New Years resolutions.

Among the top five again this year will be losing weight.

Chef Michael Gomez of Smith River is seizing on the year 2020 to zero in healthy eating. Like 20/20 vision, I want people to focus this year on what is really important for a healthier lifestyle, Gomez said.

He said hes worked in restaurants all his life, over the years feeding celebrities such as John Travolta, Steve McQueen, James Gardner and Ronald Regan.

That is, until he made a career change. I went from the stars to the bars, said Gomez.

He subsequently worked as a chef in the prison system for 28 years. On March 5, 1990, Gomez became one of the original employees when Pelican Bay State Prison opened north of Crescent City.

Pelican Bay was the first prison in the state to hire a nutritionist. So, I was around food 24/7, Gomez said.

And being around food had its downside. At one point, Gomez weighed 350 pounds, thanks to a genetic propensity toward obesity. His brother tried to address his extreme weight by having gastric bypass surgery, Gomez said, only to die seven days later from medical complications.

He said gastric bypass surgery and its reduced-diet requirements remains the No. 1 extreme weight-loss strategy, with a 75% success rate. Number 2 is Weight Watchers, followed by Jenny Craig and Keto.

Regardless of which diet individuals try, said Gomez, he suggests three steps: eat only when youre hungry, eat a balanced diet, and stop when you feel full.

Following those simple guidelines, Gomez said he lost 150 pounds and has kept it off for 20 years.

After retiring from Pelican Bay in 2017, he has brought his knowledge to young people, teaching kids how to cook through school district education programs. The district allowed me to let them cook in the school, then in their home, he said.

Through his youth cooking classes, Gomez began working with Sonny Baker, the SNAP Education program coordinator for the Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services.

Her healthy-living programs, such as Food Smart, are taught by community members like Gomez, people she calls champions of change.

Baker said her programs are part of CalFresh Healthy Living, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with additional state and county financing.

Theyre based on American Dietary Guidelines promoting an overall healthy lifestyle, nutrition and physical activity.

One of the local initiatives were working with in the community is Champions for Change, (people) who demonstrate that healthy change is possible through their lifestyle changes, who overcome obstacles and struggles, using their stories and testimonies, Baker said.

We give people encouragement, motivation and inspiration that lead into changes.

She said one of the programs newest workshops is Food Smart, which tailors healthy tips and dietary guidelines to those who attend. The workshops are taught by 10 champions from the community - including Gomez.

The overall guidelines show anyone can practice lifestyle changes with built-in habits, such as reading labels, using recipes and networking with other community members resources.

Its about creating a community... Creating a healthy individual, creating a safe space to learn that addresses their needs and struggles. It helps them make the journey to good health because they are empowered.

Other champions for change involved in the countys workshops include Alexander Dairy, Rumiano Cheese Co. and the Open Door Community Health Center.

There are other people like us who are what we call healthy nuts. My goal is to be a healthy town, Gomez said.

He added that while Baker teaches knowledge, he teaches habits.

One habit hed like to see, especially in youth, is to give up soda pop.

What happens when you drink soda? Soda has 6 tablespoons of sugar in it. Every tablespoon of sugar kills 14,000 white blood cells.

When does the flu season start? October. Thats when we eat a lot of sugar, he said.

What Im teaching is not how to lose weight. The five leading diseases dont start with obesity. Its heart disease. Then colon and prostate and breast cancer. Then misdiagnoses. Diabetes and then obesity.

He said the greatest roadblock to weight loss is hormonal imbalance. So, he tailors his diets to the individuals needs.

What I teach, in general, is wellness. And once they understand the wellness of their bodies, then I teach hunger patterns.

Armed with his knowledge of food, Gomez provides specific healthy-living guidelines for whichever diet someone is on, be it Keto, gastric bypass surgery, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig or others.

Gomez breaks down his healthy lifestyle guidelines to six key points:

1 - Eat only when youre hungry. You dont need to eat three square meals a day to sustain a healthy lifestyle or weight-loss program.

2 - Watch your portion size. Your stomach is a fuel tank, not a storage tank. Eat what gets burned up by daily activity, not in quantities that require long-term storage.

3 - Hang out with family and friends who also like to be healthy.

4 - Make time for some exercise. A healthy lifestyle is diet and exercise. Consider the benefits of low-impact water aerobics or swimming.

5 - Keep an eye out for club or community programs that can help your lifestyle change, such as Del Norte Countys Food Smarts.

6 - Make time for yourself. Dont get stuck in a rut at work or home. Let go of the daily grind and give more time for yourself.

The best way to help yourself to look good on the outside is focusing on how you feel on the inside, he said. Focus on helping yourself by saying, I care about what it takes to help myself.

Mr Johnson has put the NHS at the heart of his election campaign with a promise of 50,000 more nurses when he presented theConservative Party'smanifesto to forge a new Britain.The Prime Minister has alsovowed to unleash innovation byinvesting in British science and research without the barrier of EU regulations after delivering Brexit on January 31. The pledge reads: We will invest in worldclasscomputing and health data systems that can aid research, such as thegroundbreakinggenetic sequencing carried out at the UK Biobank, Genomics England and the new Accelerating the Detection of Disease project, which has the potential to transform diagnosis and treatment.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy,businesses and charities are expected to together invest up to 160million, alongside a seperate 79millionGovernment injection, as part of the Acceleration Detection of Disease programme.

Minister of State for Universes, Science, Research and Innovation Chris Skidmore has explained to Express.co.uk how this huge investment could affect Britons directly.

He said: When we looked at doing our research and development investments, we had the grand challenges that were set out, one of those was around healthy ageing.

With that, we looked at how we could provide AI and data more effectively to be able to deliver that.

Within that, the Accelerating Detection of Disease will help to identify diseases earlier.

Mr Skidmore went on to explain how the detection of cancer is at the centre of the plans.

He added: We will help people achieve that healthy lifestyle as well as increasing more positive outcomes for life expectancy.

There are a number of technologies where we want to focus, it sounds odd, but it was revealed by the UKSA how satellites can be used in monitoring cancer.

One I want to highlight is actually on quantum technology, thats the huge win.

If we crack this one, which is around quantum imaging and scanning, then we would be in a place where, in 10 years time, you will be able to hold an iPad up to someones head and see through to their skull into the brain.

What Im trying to demonstrate is we are on the cusp of this technology, creating the diagnostic technologies beyond CT scanning, beyond MRI scanning, to creating 3D modelling and targeting drugs to use on tumours.

But the investment wont only focus on groundbreaking medicines and technologies.

Mr Skidmore detailed: There are these medicines that exist, I was health minister for a couple of weeks and got to see some of these.

We have a real opportunity to be able to invest and achieve this.

But also, Matt Hancock is a big believer in tech and AI, and an AI centre has been set up to look at patient care, that will be another thing.

If you are able to do the algorithm modelling and they can help put systems in to manage patient flows.

Its as much about people as it is about the medicine they will use.

The pioneering initiative will recruit up to five million healthy people whose data will help UK scientists to research, diagnose, prevent and treat diseases including cancer, dementia and heart disease.

Leader of the programme Professor John Bell previously said: The Accelerating Detection of Disease programme will put the UK at the forefront of global research into early diagnosis and help us shift the standard in healthcare forever.

We have a vision to live in a world where you prevent disease rather than treat it too late.

The ability to identify people at risk or suffering from early forms of disease with greater precision will have a profound impact on how we develop diagnostics and new ways to treat disease.

I am delighted that this challenge will bring together theNHS.

The programme is part of delivering the Governments AIand Data Grand Challenge missionto use data, artificial intelligence and innovation to transform the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases by 2030.

One of the most exciting parts of the programme could be the ability to detect and prevent diseases such as dementia, which affects nearly one million people in the UK and their families.

There are over 200 subtypes of dementia, but the five most common are: Alzheimers disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia and mixed dementia.

Currently,dementia is only treatable after symptoms are detected.

Hilary Evans, Chief Executive of Alzheimers Research UK, said in July: Alzheimers Research UK is delighted to play a part in this landmark cohort and harness this incredible resource to make breakthroughs possible for people with dementia.

"Today,we diagnose dementia causing diseases after symptoms show, but to ensure people get the greatest benefit from future treatments, we must be able to diagnose them as soon as possible.

Alzheimers Research UK is working to revolutionise how diseases like Alzheimers are identified and uniting the best minds in digital data and technology to draw on the full potential of the Accelerating Detection of Disease cohort.

The NHS has been central to Labours election campaign thus far, and their manifesto has promised a 4.3 percent increase in the health budget over the next parliament.

The party is also promising free personal care in England for over-65s, in hope of keeping the strain from doctors and nurses, costing around 6billion a year.

The manifesto reads: A Labour Government will build a comprehensive National Care Service for England.

"We will provide community-based, person-centred support, underpinned by the principles of ethical care and independent living.

We will provide free personal care, beginning with investments to ensure that older people have their personal care needs met, with the ambition to extend this provision to all working-age adults.

We will develop eligibility criteria that ensures our service works for everyone, including people with complex conditions like dementia.

"We will ensure no one ever again needs to face catastrophic care costs of more than 100,000 for the care they need in old age, which we will underscore with a lifetime cap on personal contributions to care costs.

"We will also invest in other social care packages to reverse the damage done by Conservative cuts and provide additional care packages to support both older people and working-age adults living independently in their own homes.

Ireland officially one of the best places in the world to grow old – Irish Post

IRELAND has been officially recognised as one of the best places in the world to grow old, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The recognition has been put down to Ireland's growing over-65s population, as well as the overall healthy lifestyle of the Irish people.

Irelands overall population has been getting increasingly older and older since the 1980s, with the over-65 age demographic group increasing by a high of 19% between the years of 2011 and 2016.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) even predicts in just 30 years, the number of people in the country aged 65 and over will have increased from 629,800 - the figure recorded in 2016 - to around 1.6 million.

Added to this, it's expected that over 250,000 people in Ireland will be aged over 80 by the year 2031.

Due to these expected increases, the Age-Friendly Ireland Programme was set up and has been in operation for over a decade.

Its aim is to have every local authority area in Ireland focus on creating an elderly-friendly environment as best they can, making it easier to grow old in.

Some of the work being done to ensure this includes the building of housing developments, libraries, airport guidelines, bus-route guidelines and car-parking facilities.

The Age-Friendly Ireland Programme also looks to keep people as active as possible, not just physically, but in their local community as well.

What this will ensure is that older people stay healthy and active for longer, and will provide support to those who are no longer in afeasible position to look after themselves.

Add to this Ireland's wide array of sleepy countryside towns and villages making for idyllic retirement spots, it's no wonder we're considered one of the best places in the world to grow old.

Self-care – Wikipedia

This article is about the maintenance of one's personal well-being and health. For a person's assessment of his/her own value and dignity, see Self-esteem.

In health care, self-care is any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated.[1]

Some place self-care on a continuum with health care providers at the opposite end to self-care.[2] In modern medicine, preventive medicine aligns most closely with self-care. A lack of adherence to medical advice and the onset of a mental disorder can make self-care difficult.[3] Self-care is seen as a partial solution to the global rise in health care costs placed on governments. The notion that self-care is a fundamental pillar of health and social care means it is an essential component of a modern health care system governed by regulations and statutes.[4]

Self-care is considered a primary form of care for patients with chronic conditions who make many day-to-day decisions, or self-manage, their illness.[5] Self-management is critical and self-management education complements traditional patient education in primary care to support patients to live the best possible quality of life with their chronic condition.[1][5] Self-care is learned, purposeful and continuous.[6] In philosophy, self-care refers to the care and cultivation of self in a comprehensive sense, focusing in particular on the soul and the knowledge of self.

There are a number of self-care requisites applicable to all humans across all ages and necessary to fundamental human needs.[6] For example, as humans we need to intake sufficient air, water and food; care also needs to be taken with the process of elimination and excrement. There must be a balance between rest and activity as well as between solitude and social activities.[6] The prevention and avoidance of human hazards and participation in social groups are also requisites. Maturity requires the autonomous performance of self-care duties.[7]

Self-care includes all health decisions people (as individuals or consumers) make for themselves and their families to ensure they are physically and mentally fit. Self-care includes exercising to maintain physical fitness and promote good mental health, as well as eating well, practicing good hygiene and avoiding health hazards such as smoking and drinking to prevent ill health. The personal responsibility for self-care in the context of preventative medicine was examined with a representative sample of the general public in a Citizens Jury, with the title: My health whose responsibility? A jury decides.[8]

The benefits of living a healthy lifestyle were analysed in the Caerphilly Heart Disease Study. Evidence showed a risk reduction in chronic diseases (including dementia and cognitive impairment) to be significantly associated with healthy lifestyles.[9]

Self-care is also taking care of minor ailments, long term conditions, or ones own health after discharge from secondary and tertiary health care. For instances of neck pain, for example, self-care is the recommended treatment.[10]

Patients who are better informed and more educated possess greater motivation for self-care.[2] Individuals conduct self-care and experts and professionals support self-care to enable individuals to undertake enhanced self-care. The recognition and evaluation of symptoms is a key aspect of self-care.[11] The main issues involved with self-care and the onset of illness are medically related such managing drug side effects, emotions and psychological issues, changes to lifestyle and knowledge acquisition to assist in decision-making.[2]

Self-care support has crucial enabling value and considerable scope in developing countries with an already overburdened health care system. But it also has an essential role to play in affluent countries where people are becoming more conscious about their health and want to have a greater role in taking care of themselves.

To enable people to do enhanced self-care, they can be supported in various ways and by different service providers.

Self-care support can include the following:

Self-care practices are shaped by what are seen as the proper lifestyle choices of local communities. Health-related self-care topics include;

A lack of self-care in terms of personal health, hygiene and living conditions is referred to as self-neglect. The use of caregivers and Personal Care Assistants may be needed. An aging population is seeking greater self-care knowledge primarily within families connections and with responsibility usually belonging to the mother.[7]

Michael Foucault understood the art of living (French art de vivre, Latin ars vivendi) and the care of self (French le souci de soi) to be central to philosophy. The third volume of his three-volume study The History of Sexuality is dedicated to this notion. For Foucault, the notion of care of self (epimeleia heautou) of Ancient Greek and Roman philosophy comprises an attitude towards the self, others and the world, as well as a certain form of attention. For Foucault, the pursuit of the care for one's own well-being also comprises self-knowledge (gnthi seauton).[16][17]

The self-care deficit nursing theory was developed by Dorothea Orem between 1959 and 2001. The positively viewed theory explores the use professional care and an orientation towards resources.[4] Under Orem's model self-care has limits when its possibilities have been exhausted therefore making professional care legitimate. These deficits in self-care are seen as shaping the best role a nurse may provide. There are two phases in Orem's self-care; the investigative and decision-making phase and the production phase.[18]

Sport touted as the best medicine against heart disease

At the heart of the 'French Healthy Lifestyle Alliance', scientists, politicians and economists suggest innovative solutions to combat cardiovascular diseases and obesity. Excercise is the starting point, they say. EurActiv France reports.

TheFrench Healthy Lifestyle Alliance ("Alliance France pour le Mieux Vivre) recommends a comprehensive approach to improving peoples lifestyles. The group, established by the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk (ICCR), a North American organisation, brings together French doctors, economists and politicians, who all agree on the importance of exercise as medical treatment.

Activity for longevity

Inactivity is the number one avoidable cause of death in the world, ahead of tobacco abuse, according to a 2012 medical study cited by Martine Duclos, a university professor and member of the alliance.

The professor declares that physical activity must be placed at the heart of childrens education.

Physical activity is not one of our cultural traits. It is different to northern Europe where physical activity is centre stage in childhood. Time spent sitting down in childhood shapes our behaviour for the rest of our life. Furthermore, cardiovascular diseases start in childhood, which explains the importance of making children aware at such an early stage.

Everyday actions suffice in increasing activity. She highlights that it is important to promote a positive message, and explain that activity does not necessarily have to be intensive exercise, one must simply be active every day. This means choosing the stairs over the escalators or walking short distances instead of driving.

According to Martine Duclos, exercise fends off cardiovascular diseases and lowers cholesterol levels.

The risk of developing cardiovascular diseases is 30% less likely for patients who do exercise, a minimum of 30 minutes five times per week, which is accompanied by a balanced diet low in sugar, salt and fat. For patients suffering from hypercholesterolemia, exercise can sometimes avoid the need for treatment or allow for a reduction of the prescribed doses.
