Sweetened drinks increase risk of heart disease in men by twenty percent

by: John PhillipResearchers publishing the results of a study in the prestigious American Heart Association journal Circulation have found that men who drank a 12-ounce sugar-sweetened beverage a day had a 20 percent higher risk of heart disease compared to men who didn't drink any sugar-sweetened drinks. This should come as no surprise as sweetened (and calorie-free) beverages have come under scrutiny for contributing to increased risk of potentially fatal conditions such as diabetes, dementia, stroke, liver necrosis (fatty liver) and obesity.Excess glucose in the bloodstream is easily converted to triglycerides by the liver and promptly stored as fat, typically around the waistline for use during leaner times. This survival mechanism worked very well for our ancestors of several hundred generations past, but times of plenty now exist regularly, several times each day for most.Humans were never metabolically wired to consume the large amount of nutrient-poor calories as we do today, and it is leading to an early grave for millions. The bottom line is simple: eliminate calories from sugar-sweetened beverages and lower your risk of heart disease by one-fifth. Read more...

Human growth factor used in skin care

Ahmed Al-Qahtani, founder of AQ solutions and a medicine professor at the University of California (Irvine), agreed that whitening products have always been the most in demand, not only in the Philippines but generally in Asia -- but noted that in the country, the anti-aging is a $2.5-billion industry as of last year, and its growing faster.

Mr. Al-Qahtani noted that the release of AQ Solutions was originally set for 2013 but launched a year earlier instead because of the anti-aging demand in the country.

He reflects on the desire of the Filipinos to look younger and prettier.

Aesthetics is big in the Philippines despite whitening [products] being the best-seller, he said.

He explained that the younger generation is more interested in whitening products while the older ones look for solutions for aging and hair loss.

Using a cellular level human growth factor (GF), the AQ solutions line is supposed to help renew health at the cellular level, enough to enable the reversal of the aging process. It also promotes the disappearance, or significant reduction, of scars, and restores the health of hair follicles and the scalp to improve hair grown.

Mr. Al-Qahtani considers the AQ line as a preventive and corrective solution. The line includes AQ Active Serum, AQ Hair Serum, AQ Recovery Serum, and AQ Eye Serum. Although all are topical, the recovery and hair serum need to be applied by dermatologists.

The line will be available through SQS and selected dermatologists in the country. For more information, log on to http://www.aqskinsolutions.com -- CERS

Longtime Vail Valley acupuncturist retiring

EDWARDS, Colorado Geri Schmidt has had a lot of careers public health nurse, restaurant owner, retail store owner and, for much of the past two decades, a specialist in acupuncture and homeopathic medicine. Now it's time for the next adventure.

Schmidt turns 70 this year, and has decided it's time to close A Wellness Center, the Asian medicine center she's run in Riverwalk's Diamond Building since 1998. Schmidt is selling much of her office and treatment equipment, along with furnishings and decorations. But she's keeping her supply of Chinese herbs those will probably play a big role in whatever she decides to do next.

Schmidt's interest in Chinese medicine started in the 1980s, when she was a co-owner of Vail's Hong Kong Cafe. On a trip to China with other members of the Colorado Restaurant Association, one of the tour members became sick and ended up in a clinic. Since Schmidt is a registered nurse, she went along to help if she could.

The doctors in the clinic used acupuncture on the tour member who recovered quickly. Schmidt was intrigued, but there wasn't a lot of English-language information about acupuncture available at the time.

A few years later, Schmidt learned about a Chinese medicine class aimed at Westerners. Not long after, Schmidt completed a four-year program in Santa Fe.

With her acupuncturist's certification in hand, Schmidt spent a couple of years working with local chiropractor Jeff Roth who is still in practice in Glenwood Springs. She struck out on her own in 1998, when her spot in the Riverwalk center was finished.

Since then, Schmidt has treated hundreds of local residents and visitors for everything from fertility problems to cosmetic treatments.

Some of that treatment is done with acupuncture needles Schmidt has a host of photos of smiling kids with needles in various spots but much is done with herbs and items ranging from antler velvet to seahorses.

While Schmidt is selling off much of what's in her office now, she's keeping the large wooden cabinet filled with herbs and other items.

Those herbs, often cooked into drinkable potions, can be used for any number of things her anti-aging tonic, made from antler velvet, organic vodka and other items, has been popular over the years.

The immune boosting power of garlic

by: Dr. David Jockers

Garlic is a pungent herb and one of nature's best anti-biotics. Due to the powerful sulfur containing nutrients and immune stimulators within garlic, it is classified as a superfood herb. Consumption of garlic daily may be one of the best defense's against infection and inflammatory based disease.

Garlic has been used by many cultures throughout the history of mankind as a medicinal tool. The Sumerians and other groups around the Mediterranean region had a great reverence for its ability to fight infection. An Egyptian writing dating back to 1500 BC discusses the use of garlic for over 22 common health challenges. These same Egyptians fed a heavy garlic diet to their slaves to increase their strength as they built the great pyramids. Read more...

Has Your Doctor Turned You Into a Hypochondriac?

Once you turn 40 you start hearing a different tune from your doctor. The person who once said you were healthy as an ox is starting to tell you about the problems of aging, how you aren't as strong as you used to be and that oncoming illnesses are imminent and dangerous. This has led many to believe that their doctor is trying to make them a hypochondriac. Are doctors doing this, or is it just the imagination of someone who really cannot accept that his or her health truly is declining? If the doctor is doing this, is this considered malpractice? All of these questions will be answered.

Heart attacks without chest pain more common than thought, especially among women

by: PF Louis

The CDC reports that approximately 800,000 first time heart attacks occur annually. Ignoring iatrogenic deaths (death by medicine), heart disease is still the number one killer for both men and women.

However, the common perception of chest pain or discomfort as a signal that a heart attack is occurring are less than one normally thinks, especially among younger women under 45.

A study led by Dr. John Canto at the Watson Clinic in Lakeland, Florida, used medical records in a national database of heart attack patients from 1994 to 2006, covering around 1.1 million people treated at close to 2,000 hospitals.

Dr. Canto and his team reported their study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on February 21, 2012.

What was revealed is that chest pain is not necessarily the only indication of a heart attack. Dr. Canto used the term "atypical symptoms" to describe possible indications of a heart attack other than chest pain.

Atypical symptoms of a heart attack include numbness, unprovoked arm, jaw or back pain, sudden shortness of breath, weakness or fatigue, or unusual feelings of indigestion or nausea. Read more...

Guyabano – Cancer Cure Discovered?

"Cancer Cure Discovered : Guyabano - The Soursop Fruit!" This article was forwarded to us by email by no less than former House of Representatives member and incumbent DavOr vice governor Mayo Almario. We also found out that

posted this on Facebook.

Why are we not aware of this? Because some big corporations want to make back their money spent on years of research by trying to make a synthetic version of it for sale.

So, since you know it now you can help a friend in need by letting him/her know or just drink some sour sop juice yourself as prevention from time to time. The taste is not bad after all. Its completely natural and definitely has no side effects. If you have the space, plant one in your garden. The other parts of the tree are also useful. The next time you have a fruit juice, ask for a SOUR SOP.

How many people died in vain while this billion-dollar drug maker concealed the secret of the miraculous Graviola tree?

This tree is low and is called graviola in Brazil, guanabana in Spanish and has the uninspiring name "sour sop" in English. The fruit is very large and the subacid sweet white pulp is eaten out of hand or, more commonly, used to make fruit drinks, sherbets and such.

The principal interest in this plant is because of its strong anti cancer effects. Although it is effective for a number of medical conditions, it is its anti tumor effect that is of most interest.

This plant is a proven cancer remedy for cancers of all types!

Besides being a cancer remedy, graviola is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections, is effective against internal parasites and worms, lowers high blood pressure and is used for depression, stress and nervous disorders.

If there ever was a single example that makes it dramatically clear why the existence of Health Sciences Institute is so vital to all concerned and especially Americans like you, it's the incredible story behind the Graviola tree.

FINDINGS: The drug rapamycin has been shown to extend lifespan in lab animals, yet rapamycin has also been linked to impaired glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, two hallmarks of diabetes. By teasing apart rapamycin's activity at the cellular level, researchers at Whitehead Institute and the University of Pennsylvania have determined that inhibiting only the protein cluster known as the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) prolongs life in mice without adversely affecting glucose tolerance or insulin sensitivity.

RELEVANCE: With this novel understanding of how rapamycin produces its anti-aging effects, researchers may be able to develop a drug that specifically targets mTORC1, thereby promoting longevity while preventing the adverse effects associated with rapamycin.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (March 29, 2012) One of the secrets to a longer, healthier life is simply to eat less. When subjected to calorie restriction (CR), typically defined as a 20-40% reduction in caloric intake with corresponding maintenance of proper nutrition, animals in labs not only live longer, but also have improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, both of which decline during aging.

Yet, for all of its benefits, CR's restricted diet is a stumbling block for most Americans. If only we had a drug that could do the same thing.

Well, we do, sort of. The drug rapamycin, which is used for immunosuppression in organ transplantations, mimics the longevity effects of CR and may tap into the same cellular pathway as CR. Unlike CR, however, rapamycin actually impairs glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, two hallmarks of diabetes. Clearly, rapamycin is doing something CR is not.

To understand better rapamycin's benefits and risks, researchers from the lab of Whitehead Institute Member David Sabatini and Joseph Baur, assistant professor of Physiology, at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, have discovered precisely how rapamycin is behaving at the cellular level. Their intriguing results are published this week in the journal Science.

"We know that despite its adverse effects, rapamycin still prolongs lifespan, so there's a potential that we could make it better by just having lifespan affected and not induce the adverse effects," says Sabatini, who is a professor of biology at MIT and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator. "The data in this paper suggest that it's possible."

Rapamycin, which is also called sirolimus and marketed in the United States as Rapamune, is a known inhibitor of the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), a protein complex that regulates many cellular processes linked to growth and differentiation. mTORC1 is part of a cellular signaling pathway, called mTOR, which responds to nutrients and growth factors. Mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2) is also part of the mTOR pathway and regulates insulin signaling.

Raise a glass of wine to resveratrol

Drinkers the world over have been thrilled by the notion that resveratrol, a chemical found in red wine, might be some kind of anti-aging powerhouse.

The supposed wonder substance can make perilously chubby lab rats live as long as their slim counterparts, protect them from cancers and reduce their risk of dying from a high-calorie diet. It can lengthen the life of certain fish while warding off brain decay and improving the creatures' swimming chops.

Which may sound very alluring for those of us who'd like to think that sipping Pinot Noir while relaxing on a couch counts as doing something healthful.

But does what goes for mice and fish go for people too? Well, nobody yet has divided us into two groups, given one group resveratrol, the other a placebo, then checked several decades later to see how long we all lived. But results from a few small human trials show a lot of potential.

A study of 11 obese men, for instance, found that administering 150 milligrams of resveratrol a day for 30 days mimicked the effects of calorie restriction, which has been shown to increase life span.

Another study of 40 patients who'd had heart attacks demonstrated improved cardiac function after participants took 10 milligrams of resveratrol a day for three months.

Still more research has shown that people who took the substance in varying amounts were better able to control their blood sugar.

But here's the catch: To get the doses of resveratrol used in these studies, you'd have to drink between two and 100 bottles of wine a day. "I definitely don't recommend that," says Dr. Jill Crandall, director of the Diabetes Clinical Trial Unit at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She's not a fan of resveratrol supplements either: "The reliability of suppliers and purity of preparations is not very regulated," she says.

Still, studies do show that a glass or so of red wine a day may be good for the heart (which is why people started looking at the qualities of its ingredients to begin with). "There are many things in red wine that are beneficial to health," says Joseph Baur, assistant professor of physiology at the University of Pennsylvania. The tricky part, he says, is figuring out how much credit each substance is due and how it does what it does. In the meantime, raise your glass in moderation, of course.

How vitamin D helps prevent lung cancer

by: Aurora Geib

Increasing vitamin D may now be a matter of life or death, as recent studies have shown that it may play a vital role in the fight against lung cancer. To date, lung cancer is one of the three most common cancers that kill men and women in developed countries with a statistic of one million deaths every year.

Researchers from the University of California at San Diego discovered a correlative relationship between higher rates of lung cancer and less exposure to the sun.

Cancer and vitamin D

The study compared data from national and international databases and compared the lung cancer rates in 111 countries. It found a correlation with smoking, lung cancer and significant lower UVB exposure. Although the current study focused only on lung cancer, research conducted on other cancers have pointed to the fact that most cancer cases are seen in subjects living far from the equator, suggesting that lower levels of vitamin D also account for a high risk of colon and other cancers. Cancer industry trying to co-opt most recent potential natural cure – frankincense

by: Paul Fassa

"There is not one, but many cures for cancer available. But they are all being systematically suppressed by ... the major oncology centers. They have too much of an interest in the status quo," stated Dr Robert Atkins, MD, creator of the Atkins Diet, after licensure problems for curing cancer patients with ozone therapy during the 1960s.

Yet the cancer industry keeps doing exactly what Dr. Atkins described. It is amazing how many cures do exist while many suffer and die from "accepted" incredibly expensive toxic chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

At least 100 natural cancer cures have been discovered and used successfully without side effects since 1920.

Now independent research points to another potential natural cancer cure, Sacred Frankincense. This is an herb grown mostly in Oman, south of Saudi Arabia and east of Yemen on the Arabian Sea coast. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years for several ailments by Ayruvedic medicine. However, research is being conducted with the goal of isolating active ingredients in the herb that Big Pharma may mimic with lucrative FDA approved patents. Read more...

Obese People at Higher Risk of Infection After Colon Surgery

(HealthDay News) -- Obese patients are at a significantly increased risk for surgical site infections after undergoing partial or full removal of the colon, a new study finds.

It included 7,020 patients, aged 18 to 64, who had either partial or total colectomy for colon cancer, diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease between 2002 and 2008. Of those patients, 1,243 were obese.

The overall rate of surgical site infections was 10.3 percent, but the rate was higher in obese patients (14.5 percent) than in non-obese patients (9.5 percent). After adjusting for a number of factors, the researchers calculated that obese patients were 60 percent more likely to develop surgical site infections than non-obese patients.

The average cost of colectomy for all the patients was $16,399, but the average cost for obese patients was about $295 more than for non-obese patients.

The researchers also found that surgical site infections greatly increased the cost of the procedure. The average total cost for patients who developed surgical site infections was $31,933, compared to $14,608 for patients without infection. Read more...

Intermittent fasting promotes brain health

By Michelle Bosmier

According to a new study carried out at the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore, fasting for one or two days each week may help improve the condition of individuals suffering from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Researchers have found that stopping nearly all food intake for short periods of time triggers a protection mechanism within the brain which also works against the effects of neurodegenerative disorders.

Calorie intake impacts the brain

Professor Mark Mattson, lead author of the study and professor of neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, explained at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Vancouver that "reducing your calorie intake could help your brain, but doing so by cutting your intake of food is not likely to be the best method of triggering this protection. It is likely to be better to go on intermittent bouts of fasting, in which you eat hardly anything at all, and then have periods when you eat as much as you want. In other words, timing appears to be a crucial element to this process." Read more...
