Mario Lopez thinks he has great chemistry with Khloe Kardashian on 'The X Factor'.

The newly appointed host believes his extroverted personality complements his straight-talking co-hosts' and claims the pair don't even have to try to make it look natural for the cameras.

Mario said: 'It's been great since you can't manufacture chemistry. You either have it or you don't. It makes it easy and comfortable.

'I think I'm pretty hyper and like to talk. Our personalities mesh well and compliment each other.'

The former 'Saved By The Bell' star admits he is still getting used to the coveted gig - which he and Khloe are taking over from Steve Jones - but filming is so convenient that the transition has been very smooth.

Mario enthused to Parade.com: 'It's still pretty new. We'll have the next live show on Thursday (01.10.12). I'm excited to be kicking it off and be part of the team.

'I was already a fan of the show so I'm looking forward to it and everything is convenient: they shoot next door to where I do 'Extra' and my radio show.'

Thunder vs. Spurs: OKC focused on chemistry with new players

The Thunder all-of-a-sudden find themselves with chemistry concerns following James Harden's departure.

Few questioned the chemistry on the Oklahoma City Thunder the last few years, as Kevin Durant, James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Co. all looked like they had fun together on and off the court to anyone paying attention.

Now, Harden is out of the mix after a surprising trade over the weekend to the Houston Rockets. With the Thunder set to open their season Friday night against the San Antonio Spurs, all of a sudden chemistry is a concern. Kevin Martin and rookie Jeremy Lamb, acquired from Houston, as well as rookie draft pick Perry Jones all have to be worked into the mix for the defending Western Conference champions.

As Jones told NBA.com, chemistry is one of the things the team is working on:

"Right now we're just getting some chemistry with our teammates," Jones said. "It's all going well. They're learning pretty fast, so it's looking like it's going to be a good season for us... I'm really excited, I just can't wait to get out there and compete with these guys and see the hard work we went through and see it unfold."

Head coach Scott Brooks is confident his team knows what it takes to build the necessary rapport:

"These guys that we brought in are chemistry guys," Brooks said. "They understand what it is to make a successful team. Everybody has to sacrifice. Those are guys that have done that in the past, and they're going to have to do that with us."

The Thunder open the season on the road Friday night agains the San Antonio Spurs. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. CT and the game will be televised by TNT.

Tom Izzo likes what he sees of Michigan State's chemistry, unity

CHICAGO -- Leadership, chemistry, distractions.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo used those words together often in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, lamenting the lack of the first two and the frequency of the third.

Last season, the distractions faded and the leadership and chemistry were strong. The Spartans won a share of the Big Ten and their first Big Ten tournament in 12 years, collecting a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen.

Draymond Green was responsible for most of that leadership, with help from fellow senior Austin Thornton. The No. 14 Spartans are starting over there, but Izzo says he likes what he sees through two weeks of preseason practice and with an exhibition game Tuesday against Northwood (Fla.).

"You know what I think we have right now? Not as good leadership, but as good or better chemistry," Izzo said. "I mean, you watch practice, guys just seem to ... I don't know. There's a different respect for everyone. Probably because everybody's on a similar level.

"I think the difference in our talent, we've got three or four really talented guys, but the difference is not major."

Last season, Green was the face of the program, a consensus All-America, the Big Ten player of the year and the NABC national player of the year.

Now there is no clear star or go-to player, and the captains are senior center Derrick Nix and sophomore guard Russell Byrd. Junior point guard Keith Appling is trying to be more vocal as well.

The Spartans are hoping their closeness as a team will compensate for the lack of a dominant voice.

"The crazy part is, I didn't think we would bond like we did after Draymond left, but we picked right up," Nix said. "The freshmen came in; they're pretty cool. We're just a close team."

UC chemistry students to be taught by an industry leader

Chemistry students at the University of Canterbury (UC) will have the opportunity to be taught by a national industry leader in 2013.

Dr Peter Surman, the global research and development manager from Douglas Pharmaceuticals, will teach third and fourth year UC chemistry students as well as teaching into the chemistry PhD programme.

Dr Surman will visit the chemistry department in May 2013 for a concentrated series of lectures, seminars and workshops.

He said building connections with tertiary institutions helped Douglas to attract talented graduates and to date their out-reach to Canterbury had been limited.

This is also an opportunity to meet with academic staff in the UC physical sciences," he said.

Chemistry lecturer Dr Sarah Masters said Dr Surmans commitment to UC was great news for chemistry students.

He has wide-ranging experience in industry, from roles in developing and marketing and company start-up to his current senior management experience. He will bring extensive knowledge of these areas to our students and will be a source of inspiration as they think about further study and potential careers in industry, broadening their horizons as to possible career pathways."

Dr Surmans visit is part of the Futureintech VIP initiative supported by the Institution of Professional Engineers and funded by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to promote careers in technology, science and engineering.

Chemistry class in session as ISU beats Lewis in exhibition basketball

TERRE HAUTE Chemistry class was in session at Hulman Center on Thursday.

Indiana States mens basketball exhibition game against Lewis was as much about the team getting to know each others tendencies as it was about beating the Flyers.

The Sycamores defeated the Division II Flyers 79-66 and learned some things about themselves in the process.

It was kind of hard to know what we were going to have going in. We have a lot of talent. We have a lot of guys who can make plays, but until you go into a live situation with your teammates, you really dont know what you have, ISU forward R.J. Mahurin said.

In a nutshell, the Sycamores proved they could score, especially off of turnovers (16 points). What they also proved is that they need some work on the defensive end.

Team chemistry isnt derived after just one experiment. ISU coach Greg Lansing put the onus on ISUs veterans to get the experiment pointed in the right direction.

Theyre all trying. Theyre trying to say the right things and to do the right things, but we need the guys who have been through it before to be the voices more often than not, ISU coach Greg Lansing said.

Mahurin was ISUs leading scorer with 21 points. Mahurin scored seven consecutive ISU points in a late first-half run that turned an ISU deficit into a 23-22 lead with six minutes left in the half. The Sycamores would not trail the rest of the way.

Dawon Cummings added 12 points and Khristian Smith had 10. Justin Gant had eight points and eight rebounds and displayed vigor in the paint.

After ISU closed the first half on a 14-4 run to take a 37-26 halftime lead, the Flyers never seriously threatened. On the other hand, Lewis was never completely put away either. ISUs lead peaked at 21 with 12:27 left in the game, but late in the game when ISU turned to its least experienced crew and the Flyers pressed Lewis cut its deficit to nine.

Chemistry week ends with a bang

Students enjoyed National Chemistry Week Oct. 2226 and participated in everything from eating nitrogen ice cream treats and chemistry magic shows.

James Patterson, an assistant chemistry professor, was in charge of the poster research session during the weeks events.

Its a chance for students and faculty to present and share their research, Patterson said. The main purpose is to inform students of the different projects and give researches chance to practice those (presentation) skills.

The BYU chemistry magic shows were a crowd favorite. The shows were offered every evening of the week in rooms w111 and w112 of the Benson Building.

Its a different thing to do than the normal date stuff, Wilson said. A lot of students think chemistry is kind of boring, its good to see the other side of chemistry because it can be fun.

Professor Josh Prices chemistry magic show impressed students because of his inclusion of chemistry formulas and terms in helping students understand the magic being created.

Families, cub scouts and students filled the room leaving no empty seats. The back of the classroom was lined with cub scout groups while the stairs were lined with students, and Professor Price captured the audiences attention.

Austin Carter, asophomore from Melbourne, Fl., enjoyed seeing reactions that he had learned in his chemistry class, and also being introduced to new reactions he had not yet learned.

It was impressive the professor explained what chemical reactions were going on, Carter said. I felt it was a way of showing chemistry could be interesting and fun.
