Truck driver Carlos Soto understands how hard it can be to stay fit as a truck driver, but instead of giving in to the ease of an unhealthy lifestyle, he has made his health and wellbeing a priority with just a few changes to your exercise routine and food.

Soto spends at least 10 hours a day driving his truck up to 4,000 miles a week not exactly the perfect formula for a fit lifestyle so he finds whatever opportunities he can to work out and eat healthy, even if it takes a little extra focus.

As a trucker, all you do is pretty much eat, sleep and drive, and its easy to be unhealthy, he said to Mens Health. So many people in my line of work get knee problems, diabetes and have high blood pressure, because youre not moving and eating crap. Your body just starts shutting down. It feels like thats true for 90% of the industry. Theres a lot of truckers in their 30s or 40s who are already walking like 80-year-old men when they leave their truck, because they dont walk or run or get any activity.

As many as 50% of American truck drivers are obese according to the National Institute of Health, and Soto says he used to be one of them, weighing in at 250 pounds. But once he decided to make a change by working out at home, he started seeing results and knew he had to take his new healthy-living initiative on the road.

My body fat went way down, he says. It was important for me to maintain muscle in my fitness journey, though. I do more heavy weights than cardio for my workouts, and my muscle has gone up as a result Ive been able, through workouts, to never have problems with my lower back. Im sitting for 10 hours, so I often emphasize my quads through machine workouts and exercises like deadlifts and squats to keep them strong.

He soon realized that his new healthy lifestyle had more impact on his life than just the visible changes.

I feel amazing these days, he says. My energy levels and strength after many years are totally different. Im stronger and healthier, even after so many years of driving. I wanted to shock the stereotype of all truck drivers being out of shape My ultimate goal, though, is to look at myself in the mirror each morning and feel healthy and happy. I want to play soccer with my son and be in shape for that. I want to be healthy for my job and have a long, healthy and productive career.

Now, Soto makes a concerted effort to workout when he can, meal-prep healthy meals for OTR, and never lose focus on what matters most his wellbeing.

Sometimes its very hard, often the only time I have is around 2 to 4 in the morning. Sometimes Ill plan my routes to target 24 hour Life Time clubs. I try to get to Life Time the night before, park my truck, sleep in the parking lot and in the morning after 8 hours of sleep, I wake up, work out, get breakfast and hit the road for 10 more hours.

Although it takes effort and intention, Soto says its worth every extra step to feel as good as he does and keep his body moving.

For people who are new to fitness, I always tell them that you have to do it for yourself. Do it to be more productive and healthy for your lifestyle and family. I know a lot of people, they dont want to have health problems. Exercise is a great way to fight that. Its also amazing to feel good about yourself. I meet a lot of depressed truck drivers who are overweight. Even the money theyre making right now, theyre miserable. Everything can be accomplished with a few changes to your exercise routine and food.

Healthy Living: Dental issues like clenching on the rise, what to do about it – Q13 News Seattle

SEATTLE - We know that stress is at an all-time high for most of us amid this pandemic. That added stress could have big impacts on our teeth.

New research released by the American Dental Association shows the majority of dentists are seeing an increase in stress-related oral health conditions among patients. These issues include chipped and cracked teeth, TMD symptoms and Bruxism-- a condition that includes clenching and grinding.

Dr. Crispen Simmons is a dentist who specializes in TMJ and orthodontics at his local practice. He says the issues we are seeing are obviously related to stress and that puts extra force on our teeth and can cause them to fracture or break.

"We try to mask it as best we can but its still, every day is a problem of some sort, and stress psychosocial issues certainly play a part.

The go-to when people have issues is usually a night guard, but Dr. Simmons says night guards just act as a band air to a deeper underlying problem,Night guards often help to protect the teeth, and theyre commonly made but theyre frequently not necessary and dont even really resolve the problem, they just keep you from interfacing your teeth directly, and sort of sanding them off if you will, but they dont solve any of the fundamental factors that could be involved.

While a nightguard may prevent you from further grinding, Dr. Simmons says to be careful because a night guard might actually create more issues like jaw pain, headaches, and neck and back issues.

Your bite is changing your posture, when they put a night guard in, it introduces a change in your bite, which requires you to change the posture of your head and when you change the posture of your head to accommodate that, it changes the strain on your cervical vertebra and muscles.

Dr. Simmons says underlying structural-developmental problems actually create an environment that is ideal for clenching and grinding problems and these issues begin when we are very young.

"If a child has lips apart while theyre just sitting around, walking around they have a problem. They cant breathe through their nose, and if they cant breathe through their nose, this is not gonna develop properly. If this doesnt develop properly, the upper jaw and the lower jaw as well are not gonna develop properly.

Dr. Simmons says unfortunately these aren't really issues we can fix ourselves and often happen in our sleep. He says you should seek treatment as soon as you notice a problem.

There are some things Dr. Simmons says we can do to decrease behaviors like clenching our teeth while in traffic,Often just by training and being self-aware, you can catch yourself and you know in your mind what those situations are, and you become self-aware and you go, oh I just have to relax, I just have to relax.

Dr. Simmons says meditation has been really beneficial for some of his patients, as it helps us to relax and regain control. We also want to be sure to have good posture throughout the day as an aligned spine and a jaw that is relaxed are some keys to avoid clenching.

According to the ADA more than a quarter of dentists are also seeing increases in periodontal disease, so cutting back on refined sugars is also a good idea.

Third of Dutch trying to improve their health since Covid – NL Times

One in three Netherlands residents are more consciously trying to improve their health since the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic, according to a survey by Motivaction among 1,532 Dutch for health insurer Zilveren Kruis, ANP reports.

82 percent of respondents said that they are working on having a healthy lifestyle. A better diet and more exercise are the first changes for most. Improving their living environment is a close third.

55 percent said that they are very satisfied with the results of having a more healthy died. 67 percent are very satisfied with the results of getting more exercise. And 78 percent are very pleased with the changes they made to improve their living environment.

21 percent said that making healthy changes was difficult for them. 15 percent said their efforts to improve their health were not worth the payoff.

Some 40 percent said that they decided to improve their health due to to negative emotions like fear, shame or sadness. About the same percentage said that they are now more aware of their health.

The researchers also found that 36 percent of Netherlands residents feel more tired and somber due to the crisis. This is most common among young people, 57 percent of 18 to 24 years olds said this.

Discovering the Molecular Processes in Kidney Cells That Attract and Feed COVID-19 – Michigan Medicine

Although the lungs are a common target for COVID-19s cytokine storm, so are the kidneys, making the 1 in 4 U.S. adults with diabetes resulting in diabetic kidney disease at increased risk for virus mortality.

But why are the kidneys so attractive to the coronavirus?

Recently published in Kidney International, a national research team made up of kidney clinicians, bioinformaticians, a molecular biologist, pathologist and virologist found that a protein on the surface of some kidney cells, called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), is the primary COVID-19 entry receptor and aids in the activation of its uncontrolled immune response.

It also is responsible for the virus duplication, leaving patients sicker, longer.

Since higher levels of ACE2 expression on cells correlates with higher risk of serious COVID-19 illness, Matthias Kretzler, M.D., a study author and nephrologist at Michigan Medicine, sought out to learn more about which kidney cells create elevated levels of this protein and why, as well as if the molecular process of the vulnerable cells is similar to those in patients with COVID-19.

Using machine learning technology developed by study author Olga Troyanskaya, Ph.D., from Princeton University, the researchers were able to identify and categorize groups of genes that produced higher ACE2 expression levels in three different subject groups: healthy, living kidney donors (18 participants), those with diabetic kidney disease (44 participants) and those hospitalized with COVID-19 (13 participants.)

After analyzing more than 110,000 different cells in the three groups, Kretzler and the team identified networks of molecules that result in higher levels of ACE2.

Being able to characterize these molecular processes may help scientists quickly identify and develop therapies to lessen the risk of serious illness for patients, or even prevent COVID-19 infection from damaging the kidney, Kretzler says.

The groups shared a few molecular similarities, but one would become the focus of the researchers: ACE2 was predominantly expressed in cells that also expressed markers of specialized transport epithelial cells in the proximal tubules.

This area of the kidney is responsible for reabsorbing nutrients during the kidneys filtration process.

Using kidney biopsies from the healthy kidneys and those with diabetic kidney disease, and kidney cells retrieved from the urine samples of COVID-19 patients, the machine learning technology allowed the research team to pinpoint in what kidney cells ACE2 is found and what characteristics these cells have.

Cells that express the virus receptor, ACE2, were found to be locked and loaded for the virus, meaning many other proteins are found with ACE2 which interact with viruses during infection.

This wasnt only true in the COVID-19 infected patients, but also in kidneys from patients with diabetes. When comparing the kidney cells of COVID-19 patients with those with diabetic kidney disease, similar molecular processes were activated in both that would trigger severe COVID-19 illness.

Diabetic kidney disease, by nature, primes kidney cells in a way that can make them vulnerable to COVID-19, Kretzler says. In conjunction with COVID-19 and its inflammatory nature, serious kidney damage can occur.

Dr. Jeff Tinsley on healthy living, enjoying life, and giving back – Jill Lopez

Dr. Jeff Tinsley is a 2017 graduate of Tuskegee University. He is currently a Dermatology Resident at the Animal Dermatology Clinic of Louisville, and has completed a small animal rotating internship at Blue Pearl.

While dermatology isn't a common specialty for most veterinarians, Dr. Jeff chose it for good reason. Skin disorders, ear problems, and other issues related to dermatology are one of the top reasons pets are brought to the vet. Although skin problems aren't usually ife threatening, they can make the lives of animals miserable, and may even make their owners consider euthanasia.

Dr. Jeff discovered that he could help these patients receive much needed relief, and a give them a new lease on life. He realized what a huge difference he could make for pets and owners by just fixing the skin. This small but incredibly important change in the lives of animals is why he became a veterinarian, and has fueled his interest in dermatology.

While he is dedicated to his career and passionate about dermatology, it isn't his only interest. Outside of work, he is a CrossFit guru, and his healthy lifestyle includes lots of running, mostly with this adorable dog named Renly. He is also passionate about food.

It's hard to imagine a world outside of veterinary care, but if he wasn't a vet, Dr. Jeff believes he would be a nutritionist. It would be quite interesting to counsel people through their health journeys and curate each persons diet for their specific needs. We really are what we eat!

Dr. Jeff is passionate about his career, but he's also passionate about the communities that he is a part of daily. His mission in life is to give back to the black community, the vet community, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Most agonizing career decision I ever made:

Deciding not to enter the match during my rotating internship. After my 2nd year of vet school I shadowed a surgeon and was dead-set on getting a surgical residency. I am a planner. This was the plan. A few months into my first internship I realized that Surgery wasnt going to be for me. I struggled mentally for months deciding my next step. Eventually, I chose to go into General Practice and it was the best thing for me at that time.

Books that left a last impression on me:

Becoming - by Michelle Obama was a very special book for me. It is the memoir of former United States first lady Michelle Obama. The book talks about her roots and how she found her voice, as well as her time in the White House, and her public health campaign.

How I clear my head after a stressful day

Number one for me is definitely exercise. In the before times, I was doing CrossFit 3 times a week. Its not for everyone, but sweating it out for an hour in HIIT-style training puts me in the zone, helps me release endorphins and dissociate from the world.

My number two is having a beer. I have a special love for local craft breweries. My favorite is picking up a six pack or filling up a growler of whatevers on draft and just relaxing on the couch.

Advice for my younger self

Dear, Past Jeff. Take a personality quiz on how you learn best early-on in college. It will definitely say youre an auditory and visual learner. Instead of torturing yourself with endless reading-based study sessions; focus more time on videos and podcast-style lectures. You will still have to read a lot when you get to vet school, but you will retain so much more and enjoy school more if you focus on the way you like to learn.

What everyone should try once in their lifetime

Everyone should travel outside of the US. Specifically to a country where English isnt the primary language. Obviously this is something that requires money, so that is limiting, but if youre in school you may be able to apply for a study abroad scholarship like I did. I once went to Costa Rica for a Maymester. Experiences like this are so helpful for expanding our cultural competence and immersing ourselves in other lifestyles. It was a good reminder that there are rich cultures outside of our own. It was amazing to embrace and celebrate the differences of other groups of people.

My mission in life is to give back to the black community, give back to the vet community, and give back to the LGBTQ+ community. I want to lead by example and be a mentor to others.

Between quarantine, social distancing and the shift to virtual learning, many are looking for ways to incorporate salutary living within their daily lives. The Salisbury University Gardening Club has taken all these concerns and found a way to provide formidable solutions to these new-age dilemmas.

The Gardening Club members aim to improve the health of students and the surrounding community, while incorporating ecologically conscious techniques to advocate for environmentalist practices. The Gardening Club utilizes the principles of Bio-Intensive System of Gardening, in which the gardening techniques of Bio-Intensive and French-Intensive are intertwined throughout.

Bio-Intensive System of Gardening is employed as it is known as an ecologically conscious technique, with members relying on deep soil preparation and the close spacing of crops planted. To minimize and potentially eliminate the usage of fossil fuels, the organization employs the practice of composting as the primary source of soil fruitfulness.

The club utilizes their unique mode of gardening, Bio-Intensive, to harness the forces of nature to their benefit rather than working in opposition to them.

The Gardening Club advocates for healthy living through sustainable living practices and encourages students to live an organic lifestyle. The average college student may not readily have access to organic food options, which is why each student is encouraged to take the fruits and vegetables home and find ways to incorporate them into their daily routine.

The club is a great way to meet new people, experience new modes of gardening and to give students a reason to go outdoors, member Shyane Carter expressed. It gives people the ability to work for their food, and we hope to encourage a healthy style of living.

As coronavirus has revealed, encouraging students to utilize a health-conscious lifestyle is more important than ever. The organization has taken precautionary measures to help limit the transmission within the club proceedings, ensuring that all students who actively garden will be socially distanced and wearing face masks.

Being able to grow your own produce is a life-long skill, and one that Carter feels is essential given the current global climate regarding the pandemic.

Growing your own fruits and vegetables ensures that no cross-contamination can occur, as the products in the store are withered and could have been exposed to the virus, Carter explained. Through our organization, we can ensure purely organic produce that simultaneously encourages ways to garden with the least environmental impact.

Gardening Club Student Government Representative Ajay Draper encourages students from other organizations to participate within the organization, emphasizing the need for fraternity and sorority participation. The Garden Club would love to collaborate with any fraternity or sorority that is looking for community service," Draper said.

We have garden beds that need weeding, and their service would go towards growing sustainable organic food for the community, Draper explains.

Draper encourages every student to participate within the organization and explains the ideology of the organization in which Students are able to meet with like-minded people who are nature lovers, and actually are able to experience being out within nature.

It is a great way to surround yourself with people who share your concerns and interests for the environment, but we encourage all students to participate and absorb ways to be ecologically conscious in their everyday life. Draper ensured.

The promotion of health is a core element of the Gardening Club, and in addition to eating healthy, the club also encourages students to stay physically active through organized exercise. To connect the mind, body and spirit," the club is hosting an outdoor guided yoga event outside of Holloway Hall, Sept. 18, socially distancing students to ensure their safety in participation.

The club is currently focused on planting salad greens in the immediate future, and to prepare for the fall season they are in the process of planting pumpkins. If you want to be prepared for this upcoming season, the club plans to make jack-o'-lanterns and produce healthy snacks with the cultivated seeds.

From the promotion of physical health to the advocacy of sustainable living practices, the Gardening Club has components that can improve your daily life, and ameliorate the health of our planet. The club plans to meet at the garden Sundays at 4 p.m. and Thursdays at 6 p.m., weather permitting with times subject to change in the fall. Indian health platform wants to nourish mind, body and soul – CNN

But it has since transformed into one of India's top health platforms, with meal and grocery deliveries, online workouts, mindfulness classes, appointments at its health centers and even an online store for fitness gear.

The spread of coronavirus spurred the business to further reinvent itself, from one primarily reliant on physical gyms to an international online fitness platform.

This summer Cure.fit announced its digital expansion into the US, where it has begun offering online fitness and therapy sessions.

"Lockdown has expedited these efforts," Shamik Sharma, Cure.fit's head of international business, tells CNN Business. "When we saw the demand for our app in the United States, we launched rapidly," he adds.

Quick reaction to Covid-19

Like businesses all over the world, Cure.fit was forced to re-strategize in response to the pandemic.

Instead, lockdown has accelerated the company's pivot to online.

"When our gyms closed, we immediately knew that our customers would miss in-person classes so we created live classes through our app," says Sharma.

The Cure.fit app hosts more than 200,000 sessions daily in India, with instructor-led online classes ranging from strength to pilates, cardio and yoga.

During the pandemic, this platform has thrived. Since the start of India's lockdown, the company says it has signed up 1.5 million users in the country and amassed 100,000 paid subscribers since launching a paywall in May.

In the US, the company has reported 75,000 downloads since testing for the app began in May. Cure.fit currently offers its live sessions there for free, but plans to introduce a subscription model by the end of the year.

India's healthcare apps

This is primarily credited to technological advances, including falling device and mobile data costs, says Lalatendu Sahoo, a senior consultant at Netscribes.

"People are also becoming more and more health conscious," says Sahoo, particularly younger generations living in big cities. "They are more familiar with the internet, they're more comfortable with mobile devices ... and they are really trying to add the wellness factor into their day-to-day life," he adds.

Cure.fit wanted to attract this millennial market by selling a whole lifestyle through its range of food, therapy and fitness services.

"The idea was to build a one-stop solution for anything health and wellness," Ankit Nagori, who co-founded Cure.fit with Mukesh Bansal, tells CNN Business.

"We want to build a community of fitness enthusiasts who would like to lead a healthy lifestyle and promote healthy living," he adds.

5 Easy Ways to Detox in the Morning to Be Healthier All Day Long – The Beet

Everyone wants to wake up healthier and lose weight fast. Luckily there are things you can do every morning to push your body closer to the healthiest it can be. And while there is no quick fix (to lose weight, have boundless energy, and look and feel years younger bydinner) there are small steps you can take to become healthier, more energetic, and detox your body over time. Detoxing is a way of allowing your cells to do the important work of staying healthy, by eating better, getting sleep, exercising, and taking care of yourself, every day.

Going into a long weekend of fun and relaxation shouldn't mean falling off a cliff, healthwise, since consistency is the key to being healthy. If you make a habit of starting the day right, everything flows so much more easily from there. Committing to yourself and taking theselittle steps to being healthier is the way to see long-term health and wellbeing changes, says Nicole Rose, RD and master in nutrition, who practices in Ridgefield CT, and who loves to help her clients take the necessary steps to detox and get healthier, day by day.

"Overhauling your health or diet all at once can be overwhelming," she says. "Instead take small steps, do something to detox every day, even days a week, and that will lead you to wellness." Here are her five tips for making your body healthier, and they all add up to allowing the body to work less hard to process junk food, and spend more time getting healthier, one day at a time.

Rose is a big believer in eating more plant-based foods, adding healthy fruits and vegetables to your plate, but not being too harsh on yourself or setting unrealistic boundaries and telling yourself you can't have certain foods you may love. "If you put someone in a box and they want to get out of that box, and when they eat that off-limits food--whether it's meat or junk food--it's like they fail," she explains, which is why I don't like labels (such as vegan). But if you help them do a little better every day, they feel like they are winning, conquering their bad habits by adding good ones, and eventually, they feel so great they want to keep going."

Wellness doesn't have to cost a lot of money, or be complicated. It can start with jumping jacks in the morning, or dry brushing, or keeping a healthy salad dressing made in a mason jar in the fridge. But the more little things you do to be healthy, the more they add up, says Rose, and these wins beget bigger wins, and suddenly you are living a healthy lifestyle.

Her detoxing morning rituals and healthy habits for Rose includes any combination of these five ideas.Rose also believes that detoxing is a way of getting rid of what's unhealthy, which is an easier and simpler path towellness since it allows the body to work less hard to eliminatetoxins in our food, which allows you to stay healthy.Then she advises her clients to add clean foods, especially plant-based choices which are rich in antioxidants. Rose advisesclients toavoid acid foods (from animal products) and add alkaline foods (which grow in the earth) to allow your body to get healthier, naturally.

"Doing all these little things(like dry brushing or waiting to eat until you're hungry in the morning)is a bonus, and will help you feel like you're winning, so you want to keep on taking care of yourself, by eating healthy for the rest of the day," she adds. And while there is no one-size-fits-all for diets, she loves working with her clients to help tailor their programs to fit their needs and their lifestyles and add more plant-based foods to their plate.

Lemon Water first thing is the number one thing I advise. It helps your body by adding antioxidants first thing. You can add apple cider vinegar or ginger if you like, which is antibacterial and antifungal. I call it your morning flu shot. Start with water and lemon in the morning to alkalize your body and let it start to get the toxins out. Drinking hot Lemon Water in the morning has been linked to weight loss and improved immunity, so especially now, while coronavirus is still a threat, drinking this first thing will supply nearly 30 percent of your vitamin C for the day, boosting immunity and giving your body a healthy start to the day.

This is such a simple thing. Go outsidefor 15minutes in the morning to start your day and get sunlight. You can walk, bike, jog or just do sun salutes, or stretch by reaching for the sky, but the important thing is to let the sunlight hit your eyes and send a signal to the brain that you're awake,set restart on the day, "this is a bright new start," which works to reset your circadian rhythms and signal your body to wake up!

A new study shows that bright sunlight within an hour of waking up will help you fall asleep earlier in the evening (as will avoiding bright light within 2 hours of bedtime) so if you're sleep deprived or anxious and having trouble getting to sleep, head outside within an hour of waking to reset your body's natural clock. There's the added benefit of getting vitamin D which your body needs to metabolize nutrients like calcium from the food you eat, and boost your immune system. For energy and immunity, better sleep and a healthy metabolism, get a dose of early sunlight!

Sweat is important and we would be remiss if we didn't tell you to start your day with an activity that makes you sweat, even if it's jumping jacks. But there is another way to rid your body of toxins in sweat and that's by opening your pores and stimulating the skin with dry brushing. "People love dry brushing. You feel good, and it's believed to help your lymphatic system," Rose says. The idea is that by brushing your skin you slough off any dead cells and allow your pores to breathe,Dry brushing devotees do it torelease toxins through the skin.The bristlesstimulateand open pores andmay make it easier for the body to sweat out toxins, which lowers the number of toxins flowing through thelymphatic system. Rose tells clients to start doing it every day before their shower. "This is a way to feel like you're doing something healthy. You don't have to conquer something big."

She adds that if you like the brushing, you're going to start feeling good about your life and loving your routine. "You have to enjoy your morning and getting into it is part of a healthy lifestyle."

Changing up your breakfast is a big help in losing weight and feeling better. Everyone is trying intermittent fasting to lose weight, but Rose thinks there's a simpler and less harsh approach. Don't eat until you're hungry and even then keep it simple.

"Maybe start by pulling back on what you are eating.If you wake up and you're not that hungry, just wait to eat. My advice, and there's no delicate way to put this: Start by not eating until you have a bowel movement because we don't want to put today's food on yesterday's garbage."

Then, Rose advises, eat a small piece of fruit in the morning, instead of a big omelet or smoothie with 19 different ingredients. A simple piece of fruit like a peach, an apple, or a handful of berries is a perfect start to a clean day. "This gets your digestion going but is less work on your body to digest, so you can continue detoxing from the night before. The whole idea of detoxing is to give your body less work, so your liver and kidneys and intestines can do their job to cleanse your system. You want to start the day by cleaning out."

Start by giving your body less work to do, during the beginning of the day. "The less digestive work your body is going through, the healthier you are going to be," she adds

When you eat foods, the metabolic waste is either acid or alkaline, and the more fruit and vegetables and plant-based foods you eat, the more alkaline your body becomes, which is considered healthier in avoiding diseases like cancer. The flip side is that meat and dairy leave an acid metabolic waste and can increase your risks of chronic diseases. There are myriad studies now that link red meat and processed meat to cancer risk, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, and mounting scientific evidence that diets rich in plant-based foods and high in fiber lower your risk for all these diseases and conditions.

According to the Alkaline Diet, choosing more alkaline foods will improve your daily health and help you avoid long-term diseases, including cancer. Says Rose: "I am not a fan of meat and dairy. It creates acid in your body, and your body has to go thru so much work to neutralize the acid. Eating animal foods like meat and dairy leads to inflammation. I try to keep it simple. I tell clients to eat more fruits and vegetables. It's the small things that make a difference. Cutting out meat and dairy is the diff between your body being acid and alkaline and if they understand that they can choose healthier foods.

"I don't say. eat vegan but I try tolead by example and show clients how to shop, cook and eat more plant-based foods, which inevitably makes them feel great, as they try it.

"If you tell them what they can do, like eat more plant-based foods, as opposed to what they can't do, like cut out a specific food they may like, then they feel like they have won the lottery. You let them do all these healthy things and choose healthy foods. That's a win."

Ultimately the detox you do will make you feel positive, and give you the sense of taking control of your health from the very start of the day onwards. You want to feel empowered to become the master of your own life, she adds. "Ultimately you are giving people the power to be healthier."

"The love you have for your self, the happy talk, all adds up to make a healthier lifestyle. Small changes like these allow you to live a better life."

Wellness doesn't take crazy amounts of money or time. It's these morning detox moves. And then carry that forward throughout the day. It's making yourself a simple dressing, she adds, that you can keep in a mason jar and put on your greens at lunch to make them tasty. It's all these little strategies that add up.

Take these little steps and others that will set yourself up for success, Rose explains. "I care about consistency, that's where you're going to see progress. One morning at a time. Build a relationship with your wellbeing."

Nicole Rose, MFRD has a Masters in Nutrition and is a Registered Dietician. "I eat sleep and breathe this lifestyle," she says, practicing in Ridgefield CT. "On a personal note, I have never felt better than now at 47. For the past 25 years, I tried everything. I loved Diet Coke and Tic Tacs and gum. But I don't do those things anymore. I got informed. And I don't want those things anymore. It's nothing to do with willpower. It's knowing what you feel like when you are doing something great. It's building yourselfup."

From organic produce to fancy superfood supplements, leading a healthy lifestyle can seem intimidatingly expensive and time-consuming to many of us especially if you follow certain food bloggers on social media.

Its something that personal trainer Joe Wicks has spoken out about. The Body Coach, who says he was born into a working-class family, said its more convenient to live a healthy lifestyle in some parts of the country than others, because of the types of food on offer.

I dont think it is just overeating, I think [the] economic situation does have a big impact, he told the PA news agency.

Commenting that low-income families struggle the most, he said: It is difficult for some families with a lot of children who want to eat healthy, and they live on a street where it is all fast food and 1.99 for a family meal.

Some healthy food products can certainly be expensive, but there are also ways to save money at the supermarket and still eat nutritionally-balanced meals that will leave you feeling full and energised.

Here are a few nutritionist-backed tips, after the Government revealed its new strategy to tackle obesity and get the nation fit and healthy last month.

Maximise on pulses.: Pulses such as beans, lentils and peas are a cheap, low-fat source of protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals. They also count as part of your government-recommended five daily portions of fruit and vegetables.

Youd be surprised at how affordable and how far beans and pulses can stretch, says nutritionist Jenna Hope, who believes they are a great dietary source of protein, B-vitamins and fibre. To get more for your money, try buying the dried varieties.

Utilise frozen fruit and vegetables.: Your five-a-day dont have to come from expensive organic veg shops with fresh, loose produce.

Frozen fruits and vegetables are often just as nutritious as fresh, so theyre a good alternative when thinking about cheap dinner ideas, says Rob Hobson, nutritionist at Healthspan.

Frozen fruits can be added to healthy breakfast smoothies and puddings, while vegetables such as peas, cauliflower and sweetcorn can be added to many different dishes, including soups and stews.

Eat canned fish.: Cant afford fresh salmon from the fishmonger? Canned fish is a great cheap way to get your omega-3 fix, says Hope. Omega-3 is a fatty acid that plays a key role in brain functioning, and gut and bone health in the body.

Try opting for canned salmon and mackerel rather than the fresh varieties, she adds, as these can often work out several pounds cheaper.

Plan ahead.: Hobson believes that the best way to manage your food budget is to map out what youre going to eat across the week that way, you wont be tempted to rely on oven chips when youre stuck for inspiration.

Think about how you can use leftovers the next day and turn them into another interesting dish too, Hobson adds. For example, a pot of chilli can be used as a lunch filling to make Mexican wraps. Simply add sour cream, grated cheese and a little avocado.

Utilise the whole vegetable in cooking.: Root-to-stem eating encourages you to use every edible part of plant, including the leaves, skin, seeds and stalks.

For example, you could use cauliflower leaves and carrot tops in soup, roast the seeds of a butternut squash with salt and oil for snacking, and use vegetable peel to make homemade stock, says Hope.

According to Hope, the less you throw away, the further your weekly shop will go and not only is it great for the environment, but it will save you money in the long run too.

Coast brother-in-laws, passionate about helping kids live healthy lives will next week educate nearly 2000 students on healthy eating and active living through fun and interactive programs.

Cam Best and Chris Windsor started Juiced Up Groms, which offers weekly park sessions and educational shows in December 2019 and have since gone from strength to strength despite COVID-19 limiting their ability to present in schools.

Mr Best, who is a father-of-three and studies nutrition, said the Juiced Up Living show used a variety of storytelling games, characters and smoothie making to help children understand the basic concepts of eating healthy and enjoying life.

He said they received an influx of bookings for the Juiced Up Living Show and had to extend their roadshow to seven days so they could visit 12 schools in Toowoomba and perform for more than 1700 students.

We are super excited about that and for us its all about getting out there and showing these kids a message about healthy living, he said.

To impact them at such a young age to us means the world because we know that if we can give them some really simple information about living a healthy life at a young age its going to make such a difference to them later on.

We see it as such an honour and responsibility to be able to teach these kids about healthy living that is going to dramatically improve their lifestyle and how they feel.

The upcoming roadshow marks a new beginning for Juiced Up Groms after COVID-19 drastically reduced their ability to run educational activities.

Our Juiced Up Living Show was really starting to make some inroads just before COVID-19 and then we pretty much had to drop the anchor and hit the brakes for probably four months, Mr Windsor said.

A lot of the schools had to cancel shows because there were no visitors allowed in schools but Cam and myself took it upon ourselves to do online workouts which we were doing every day for 13 weeks.

So, we sort of lost our momentum and had to start from scratch and this will put us back on track for a good end of year.

Mr Windsor said they were motivated to help children live healthy lives.

We are extremely passionate about helping kids and getting them to understand the importance of fuelling their bodies the right way, so they are fit and healthy and have strong immune systems especially in a time like this,

When we talk about healthy living, one part of the body that is often overlooked, no pun intended, are the eyes.

We are very concerned with our weight, nutrition, fitness, aches and pains but lets not forget our vision.

Some people have vision issues from an early age. I got my first pair of glasses in the first grade.

My eyes got better over the years until I approached middle age and presbyopia set in. Now, at 64, I cant drive, read or use the computer without wearing my progressive lens glasses.

With the school year starting, now is a great time to have your childrens eyes checked. Have they complained of headaches, hold their reading materials too close, sit really close to the TV/computer screen or have said they have trouble seeing the blackboard at school?

These can be clear indicators of vision problems.

How about you? Do you have increasing dependence on you readers? Have several pair around the house? Cant thread a needle?

Or as my husband announced one day, We need to move the sofa closer to the TV. Yes, all red flags that you need to get your eyes examined.

Especially as we get older, we must take care of our vision. Poor or deteriorating vision can be caused by a variety of issues.

Some medications can cause blurred vision. Diabetes, not controlled, can cause blindness. A sudden loss of vision or double vision can be caused by a stroke. Older folks should be checked for glaucoma, which damages the optic nerve and causes blindness.

There are also eye safety issues that we all need to be aware of.

No. 1 is wear sunglasses! Yes, not just to look glamorous, as we age our eyes become increasingly sensitive and subject to damage from the sun, especially light-eyed people.

Protect them. Always wear sunglasses when you are driving or will be spending anytime out in the sun.

They do not have to be expensive; they just have to be dark enough that you can look in the mirror and not see your eyes. Of course, if you wear prescription lenses for nearsightedness, please get prescription sunglasses.

When you are working in the yard or on a DIY project, wear safety glasses or your own glasses. Protect your eyes from flying debris or droplets of chemicals.

If you wear contact lenses, clean or change them as prescribed. Dirty or contaminated lenses cause eye infections.

Throw away eye makeup after 3 months. Yes, even that expensive mascara grows bacteria and can infect your eyes. Never, ever, share eye makeup with another person. You are inviting eye infection by doing that.

If you smoke or use tobacco, stop. Tobacco use means a dramatic increase in incidence of macular degeneration as well as raising your risk of developing cataracts and aggravating uncomfortable dry eyes. It also builds up plaque in your bloodstream and weakens arteries. This not only raises your risk of a heart attack, but it can damage the retina and cause vision loss.

Like everything else in life and health, use common sense. When you have your yearly health checkup, include an eye exam with that.

What I missed most from being safe at home was interaction with other people. So two weeks into the stay-at-home order, our Sunday school class of 50- to 60-year-olds learned how to Zoom. We meet virtually each Sunday for our time of Bible study and fellowship. Just talking to each other about what we are feeling and how we are dealing with things is really helping us. Our faith is strong and we know we are not alone as we go through this pandemic.

On March 10, I weighed 190 pounds and decided to lose weight through consistent exercise and a revised food plan, in conjunction with the addition of supplements. I visited with a dietician who addressed a food plan consisting of fish, vegetables, fruits, protein drinks and the noted supplements. She developed a training program consisting of cycling, treadmill walking-running, weight training, crunches, etc., (all at home, in my garage I converted into a workout room).

I dropped to 168 pounds and have now stabilized between 172-174, which is my ideal weight. There are no words to describe how wonderful I feel. I occasionally have a glass of wine, but my desire for alcohol has completely faded. Reading books and listening to motivational speakers on YouTube have contributed to extraordinary physical and mental well-being.

Im not sure I would call what were doing as maintaining mental health as much as I would call it moving forward or just maybe just plain living day-to-day. We have kept up our routines with household chores, TV starts with the evening news during the week unless theres a sporting event and a walk each day.

We keep up with events and people through emails, phone calls, Zoom. We have tried new things like a Zoom wedding, online courses and connecting with family and friends with Zoom. We like to travel, which isnt happening now so instead, I plan what Ive named field trips each week. Its a trip by car, somewhere close that we havent been, it gets us out for a few hours and we see something new.

I think what has helped us through this difficult time is trying new ways to keep moving forward with our lives and keeping connections with family and friends. Speaking of connecting, I have written letters and emailed people I havent been in touch with lately, thats been fun. I set a goal of 3 per week since being at home, think of it as a holiday card list without the holiday.

I have cooked a lot of healthy food, trying new recipes, and grown a big herb garden, pickling cucumbers we grew in the garden. I have wanted to write a country western song and have put pen to paper to try to start that. Reading a lot of books, Zooming with friends and bicycling. Reading a lot of political commentary and learning more about implicit bias and the history of systemic racism in the U.S.

As a Bahai, I believe the fundamental truth that humanity is one, but it is not enough simply to believe this in our hearts, we need to create the moral imperative to act, and to view all aspects of our personal, social and institutional lives through the lens of oneness and justice.

It requires the participation of Americans of every race and background, for it is only through principles of love, reciprocity and inclusive participation that new moral and social directions can emerge. We should also remember that our diversity is our strength, and it is simply beautiful, like a garden with flowers of different kinds, colors and perfumes.

The role of religion as an enduring source of insight concerning human purpose and action cannot be overemphasized in this process. All faith communities recognize that we are essentially spiritual beings. All proclaim some version of the Golden Rule, to love others as we do ourselves.

On a practical level, we are trying to ensure that each person we engage feels welcome to participate in our community activities. Some might attend devotional gatherings and eventually engage with us in study and service. Nominations being accepted for Kansas Health Champion awards – Hiawatha World

TOPEKA The Governors Council on Fitness is now accepting nominations for its annual Kansas Health Champion Awards. Awards are given to individuals and organizations that make an exceptional effort to model, encourage and promote health and fitness in Kansas. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30. Award recipients will be recognized at the Community Health Promotion Summit in January 2021.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is excited to partner in this important initiative to recognize those who make healthy living in our state a priority, Dr. Lee Norman, KDHE Secretary, said. Its important that we recognize their efforts and the difference they are making in their communities.

Nominees should demonstrate:

Work that goes above and beyond what is expected to model, encourage and promote fitness

Work that helps overcome health inequities

Eligible nominees might include an outstanding volunteer, a school, a local community, a newspaper or individual reporter, a local or State policy maker or an employer, among others.

The Governors Council on Fitness advises the Governor and others on ways to enhance the health of all Kansans through promotion of physical activity, good dietary choices and prevention of tobacco use.

With gyms still closed in many parts of the country, WW is putting more weight behind digital streaming.

The company, formerly known as Weight Watchers, reported lower-than-expected second-quarterprofit and revenue because the coronavirus pandemic shut down its brick-and-mortar locations for in-person meetings. But the weight-loss and fitness brand has bulked up on digital subscribers, perhaps because work-from-home mandates and gym shutdowns have resulted in theunwanted "Quarantine 15" for many, a reference to the amount of weight gained during lockdown.

When COVID really escalated, in six days we moved all of our workshops virtually, WW CEO Mindy Grossman told FOX Business. Theres no doubt our digital transformation has accelerated. We see the future of the business certainly, we will still have studios but its really going to be driven by digital member growth.

The New York-based company reported a net income of $14 million in itssecond-quarter earnings reporton Tuesday,compared with $54 million in the same period ayear ago. Sales also dropped to $334 million from $369 million one year ago. However, WWclosed out the quarter with its highest-ever subscriber rate of 5 million people, up9% year-over-year.

Much of the growth has been driven by digital assets outside of just food and exercise, with newly implemented features such as a water tracker to monitor hydration levels and a sleep tracker to sync with smartphones.

OPRAH TOUR DRIVING WEIGHT WATCHERS MEMBERSHIPS

The brandstarted pivoting to more of a wellness company before the pandemic hit. Earlier in the year, WW presented Oprah's 2020 Vision Tour, during whichOprah Winfreyinterviewedthe likes of Michelle Obama and Jennifer Lopez about topics ranging from food, exercise, anddiet, but alsomental andphysical health. The company grew its subscriber total by 8 percent, closing out the 2019 fiscal year with4.2 million subscribers an all-time, year-end high for the brand.

The live tour also boosted the brand's bottom line with direct tour revenue estimated at close to $15 million,MarketWatchreported.

IS IT SAFE TO GO TO THE GYM DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC?

Having the star power of Winfrey whoowns 8%of thecompanys shares, according to FactSet has also helped it attract a younger demographic, Grossman says, adding that more than half of members (51%) who joined WW in the second quarter were under 45.

Were definitely seeing a new cohort coming in. There is a real shift in consumer behavior of I really need to take care of myself. COVID has really had an impact. People want a trusted brand," Grossman said.

Incorporating experiential lifestyle content into weight loss and healthy living programs is a way for WW to continue to infiltratethe wellness market. Indeed, the global wellness industry grew 12.8 percent duringthe last two years, from a$3.7 trillion marketin 2015to $4.2 trillion in 2017, according to the 2018 Global Wellness Economy Monitor.And with fitness companies like Peloton competing in the streaming wars, Grossman says WW will continue to carve out more content in the fitness space.

Boston is among the top 10 fittest cities in America, according to a new study by the American College of Sports Medicine and the Anthem foundation.

The study, released in the American Fitness Index, used 33 health behaviors, chronic diseases, and community infrastructure indicators to rank 100 cities.

Cities with the highest scores are considered to have strong community fitness, a concept analogous to individuals having strong personal fitness, the city states. Cities that rank near the top of the Fitness Index have more strengths and resources that support healthy living and fewer challenges that hinder it.

Boston came in at number 10, cracking the top 10 list for the first time, according to WCVB. Arlington, Virginia was named the fittest city in the country for the third time in a row.

With the health care costs of physical inactivity exceeding $117 billion yearly, increasing physical activity has never been more important to the nations health and economic outcomes, the study states.

Boston residents were the most likely to bike or walk to work and was only one of two cities to have all residents living within a 10-minute walk to a park, the study states.

Massachusetts was also recently named the best state for health care in the United States, according to WalletHub.

Spectrum Generations, in partnership with Healthy Living for ME, will offer a free workshop to help individuals with diabetes, prediabetes, their caregivers or family members.

Living Well with Diabetes will be offered through Zoom beginning Monday, Aug. 13, and running through Thursday, Sept. 17. Workshops participants will meet weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., according to a news release from Augusta-based agency.

Topics such as testing your blood sugar, menu planning, stress management, increasing activity level, treating low blood sugar, caring for your feet, and healthy eating will be discussed.
