An Off the Beaten Path Beach at Isla de la Piedra in Mazatlan

Spanish speakers call it Isla de la Piedra but in English it’s Stone Island. There are no Holiday Inns or Hiltons here, no franchise restaurants. For that matter, it’s not even an island. Isla de la Piedra is located on a peninsula of land across the harbor inlet from the main part of Mazatlan, Mexico. It is accessible by road, if you can call the rutted, washboard track that leads to it a road. Most people eschew the road and instead catch a small wooden for $20 pesos round trip (less than $2 U.S.), which is likely why it came to be called an island.

Beach at Stone Island begins at the base of the hill, wraps around the bay, and stretches for 25 miles

Once across the inlet, a short walk brings visitors to the Pacific side of the narrow isthmus. To the right, about 15 beach palapa restaurants offer delicious local food, priced more affordably than anywhere in Mazatlan proper. This 2 kilometer strip of “development” also includes one three story apartment building that rents rooms for $25 per night and a hand-built hostel that rents hammocks for $5 per night. To the left is nothing but a wide expanse of beach and swaying palms – more than 25 miles of pristine sand with shallow water perfect for wading.

Stone Island or Isla de la Piedra – take your choice – is not likely to be developed any time soon, if ever, since the lands are owned collectively by a handful of residents who jointly control all decisions regarding development. However, as more and more tourists discover this gem, pressure will mount. Residents have already relented and leased land to foreigners who have erected modest homes and in return have been awarded long term leases.

Rent a hammock at the hostel or just visit for a day

To reach Stone Island, head toward the Mazatlan lighthouse, which sits atop a conical hill at the end of the harbor inlet. On the quay leading to the lighthouse, one launch operator provides rides for $25 pesos  trip. A bit further south, just past the Baja Ferries terminal, a dirt road leads to a second launch operator who charges $20 pesos. Boats leave every 15 minutes or so, and the last boat departs at 4 p.m.

Monkey Schoolmarms: Vervet Monkeys Learn Better From Female Teachers | 80beats

VervetmonkeysWhen vervet monkeys play follow the leader, they prefer to follow a female. That was the conclusion of Erica van de Waal, whose lengthy study of these primates in South Africa will be published this week in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. When her team presented them with a tricky contraption they had to open to reach a tasty snack, the monkeys learned better if they watched a female from their group demonstrate the solution rather than a male.

Seeking some answers to how social learning works in monkeys, van de Waal and her colleagues headed to Loskop Dam Nature Reserve. It took four months, they say, just to acclimate the wild animals to the presence of humans. Once the monkeys were comfortable having scientists around, Van de Waal gave each group a wooden box containing a slice of apple. To get to the apple, the monkeys had to either pull open the door at one end or slide aside a door at the other. Half the box was painted black to differentiate the two ends [ScienceNOW].

In vervet groups there’s a dominant male and a dominant female, so the researchers say it’s no surprise that one of those individuals stepped forward to accept the challenge of opening the box. In three groups it was the male, and in three the female took command. “The models learned by trial and error how to open the box,” explained Ms van de Waal. “Once they understood how to pull or slide the door open we let them perform 25 demonstrations” [BBC News].

The scientists saw that other monkeys paid more attention when the dominant female was solving the puzzle as opposed to the dominant male. Later, the team passed out the same kind of box to other members of the groups. If those monkeys were among the groups that had watched the male, they didn’t show a preference for which side of the box to open, which suggested they hadn’t learned much during their spectating days. In fact, van de Waal says, they didn’t even show a preference toward attempting to open the box. But, in the groups that watched their dominant female, 80 percent went for the side of the container they’d seen her open before.

So were the monkeys just sucking up to the dominant male, trying to make him feel smart? That’s not the answer at which van de Waal’s team arrived. The key, they say, is that males grow up and then run off to find another group, while females stay with their groups for life, giving them stronger bonds with the group and also a better knowledge of the resources in a particular territory. So it makes sense that other group members look to them for guidance, Van de Waal says [ScienceNOW]. If it’s true, it could also mean that vervet “culture” is hyper-local. The team writes, “Our findings imply that migration does not necessarily lead to an exchange of socially acquired information within populations, potentially causing highly localized traditions.”

How Does a Libertarian Candidate Get Placed on the Ballot? Does the LP have a Primary?

By Chris Spangle, Executive Director of the Libertarian Party of Indiana

The Libertarian Party of Indiana is a unique political party legally in Indiana. It is the only party considered a “minor political party” because it has garnered more than 2% in the Secretary of State race. Because it has not yet achieved 10% in the Secretary of State race, the party does not hold a primary which is reserved for “major political parties.” Primaries are often incorrectly assumed to be elections for the entire voting public. They are actually considered closed party business in the eyes of election law. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents cannot participate in the other’s business. Only Republicans should choose Republican candidates for a general election and the same for Democrats.
