BEIJING, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- China Wednesday reasserted its sovereignty claims over a group of East China Sea islands while reacting to reports about jointly managing them with Japan.
The uninhabited islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, have long been an issue between the countries but tensions escalated when Japan brought the islands under its control in September.
The underlying issue isn't the small land masses but the rights to natural resources, believed to be extensive, in waters near to islands.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China opposes Japan's so-called "actual control" of the Diaoyu Islands and the waters surrounding them, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Hong said the islands and their affiliated islets have been part of China's inherent territory since ancient times and China holds indisputable sovereignty over them.
"China has repeated its position regarding the Diaoyu Islands during all consultations with Japan on the issue and stressed its strong opposition to any acts that could undermine China's territorial sovereignty," Hong said, adding his government will continue to firmly safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Xinhua reported.
Earlier this week, the South China Morning Post quoted the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell as telling a seminar in Washington that Japan and China should "step back from the brink," adding their territorial dispute can only be managed but not resolved because of the complexities involved.
Japan's Kyodo News reported that senior Japanese and Chinese Foreign Ministry officials had agreed in their talks through Monday to continue dialogue over the dispute.
Quoting the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Kyodo said in their meeting on Sunday and Monday in China, the officials confirmed that the two sides would continue to communicate and made arrangements for the next round of vice-ministerial talks.

Residents of 12 islands around Ireland have voted in the Children's Referendum.
Islanders off the coasts of Donegal, Mayo and Galway traditionally vote ahead of the mainland to make sure bad weather does not hamper the return of boxes on time for the count.
The Aer Corps brought the ballot box by helicopter to Tory Island, while ferries and boats transported the boxes to other islands.
Earlier, turnout on most islands was reported to have been slow.
However, reports from Inisturk say that that over 50% of the islanders on the register have cast their votes.
The presiding officer said that all of the people who were eligible to vote had done so and the people who had not voted missed the poll because they were on the mainland and could not get back to vote on a week day.
He said the turnout would have been higher if voting was on a Saturday like the rest of the country.
The King of Tory,Patsy Dan Rodgers, was one of the first people to cast his vote.
He said he felt islanders had not been given enough information in advance of the referendum.
Over 1,100 people are registered to vote on the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.

I can relate to the energy woes of folks in the Pacific island nation of Tokelau (technically a territory of New Zealand), and I'm a bit jealous of their solution.
Tokelau and the roughly 1,500 residents of the coral atolls about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand have become the world's first completely energy-independent territory/nation/whatever, thanks to a solar energy project that's just been completed with funding from the New Zealand government.
"Until now, Tokelau has been 100 percent dependent upon diesel for electricity generation, with heavy economic and environmental costs," New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said in a news release from the government.
When I lived in a remote rural Alaskan village, we faced a similar situation, with all diesel fuel and gasoline flown or barged in to heat homes and run vehicles at ridiculous expense -- prices for a gallon of unleaded can be double or even triple what's seen in the lower 48. You'd think the Land of the Midnight Sun might be a great place for solar energy, except for winter months when it becomes the land of nearly no sun.
So let's hope the folks of Tokelau appreciate how good they've got it, being able to ditch those noisy, stinky generators for a photovoltaic alternative that's a little more reliable closer to the equator.
Samsung had a similar idea recently with its solar-powered South African school project, as did the U.S. Department of Defense. The Navy plans to deploy a half billion dollars worth of solar power systems on its bases in Hawaii that could eventually dwarf the Tokelau project.
Not to be outdone, the nearby island nation of Tonga says it's aiming to get 50 percent of its energy from renewables by 2015, and the Cook Islands are shooting for matching Tokelau's achievement by 2020.
As for me, I've ditched Alaska and have a solar panel on my portable reporting trailer for tooling around the Southwest and West Coast, not to mention a handful of solar calculators in a drawer somewhere. Looks like I'm going to have to up my game if I want to show my face in the South Pacfific by the end of the decade.

A team of researchers at Kaiser Permanente and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has identified a significant relationship between mortality and the length of telomeres, the stretches of DNA that protect the ends of chromosomes, according to a presentation on Nov. 8 at the American Society of Human Genetics 2012 meeting in San Francisco.
While a reduction in telomere length is regarded as a biomarker of aging, scientists have not yet determined whether it plays a direct causal role in aging-related health changes and mortality or is just a sign of aging.
In their prospective study of 100,000 multi-ethnic individuals whose average age was 63 years, the researchers determined that an association between telomere length and mortality existed and persisted even after the data were adjusted for such demographic and behavioral factors as education, smoking and alcohol consumption, said Catherine Schaefer, Ph.D., director of the Kaiser Permanente (KP) Research Program on Genes, Environment and Health (RPGEH).
Dr. Schaefer and Neil Risch, Ph.D., director of the UCSF Institute for Human Genetics, are principal investigators of the Genetic Epidemiology Research Study on Adult Health and Aging (GERA). UCSF professor and Nobel laureate Elizabeth Blackburn, Ph.D., led the research on telomere length measurement.
The telomere research, part of the GERA project, has genotyped over 675,000 markers of 100,000 KP Northern California patients and linked them with health data from their electronic medical records. To obtain DNA for genotyping and telomere measurement, the researchers collected saliva samples from the patients, who volunteered for the project and provided scientists with access to their electronic medical records.
Two years prior to the saliva collection, the researchers conducted a detailed survey of the patients' demographic and behavioral factors, providing a unique opportunity to address questions of telomere epidemiology and aging.
"With these data, we examined demographic relationships with telomere length, behavioral influences and relationship of telomere length with all causes of mortality following sample collection," said Dr. Schaefer. "Although we found that shorter-than-average telomeres were prospectively associated with mortality, only those with the shortest telomeres were at increased risk of death."
Dr. Risch added, "While this could indicate a direct effect of telomere length on health, it will also be important to examine the extent of pre-existing diseases in these individuals to understand their possible role in the biological connection between telomere length and longevity."

A consortium of scientists who are taking a novel approach in their research to detect the genetic variations that predispose individuals to type 2 diabetes provided an update of their findings at the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) 2012 meeting.
Among the project's novel characteristics is the ethnic diversity of the 10,000 individuals whose exomes, the 18,000 protein-coding genes, are being sequenced.
The researchers recruited 5,000 individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) from five major ancestry groups: African-American, East Asian, European, Hispanic and South Asian. The study population also includes an equal number of controls, individuals from these same ancestry groups who do not have T2D.
"Our hypothesis is that screening the exome in a range of diverse ethnic groups increases the range of variants of each gene surveyed, and thereby improves our ability to detect genes showing differences in the patterns of the DNA codes for proteins between individuals with type 2 diabetes and controls," said T.M. Teslovich, Ph.D., research fellow in statistical genetics at the University of Michigan, who presented the study at ASHG 2012.
The study is one of the three projects under the umbrella of the NIH-sponsored T2D-GENES (Type 2 Diabetes Genetic Exploration by Next-generation sequencing in multi-Ethnic Samples) study.
The scientists' approach also will enable them to determine whether there are T2D risk variants that are unique to an ancestry group.
An initial analysis of the data on 3,500 African-American, East Asian and South Asian individuals identified about 1.6 million single nucleotide variants (SNVs), 71.5% of which were previously unknown.
"Only about 89,000, or 5.6%, of the 1.6 million variants are present in all three groups," said Dr. Teslovich.

About 10.6% of the inherited genetic risk for developing coronary artery disease (CAD) can be explained by specific DNA variations, according to research reported today at the American Society of Human Genetics 2012 meeting.
The research, conducted by scientists in the CARDIoGRAMplusC4D consortium, pinpointed 20 previously unidentified mutations during a two-stage meta-analysis of 63,746 patients with CAD, which causes more deaths worldwide than any other disease.
These genetic variants generally were infrequently found in the DNA of the 130,681 individuals without heart disease who were in the control group.
The new mutations have boosted to 47 the total number of DNA variants that have thus far been linked to an increased risk for developing CAD, said Panos Deloukas, Ph.D., who co-led the study and heads the Genetics of Complex Traits in Humans research group at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge, UK.
Scientists had previously estimated that 30 to 60% of the variation in CAD might be attributable to genetic risk factors, according to a study published in 2005*. The research reported at ASHG 2012 expands the number of specific genes that are likely involved.
"We no longer assume that coronary heart disease is triggered by just a handful of genes, each with a strong effect on a person's risk for the disease," said Dr. Deloukas. "Our research supports the current assumption that heart disease risk is determined by a large group of genes, each with a modest effect on risk."
Identifying the genetic mutations that set the stage for CAD enables researchers to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the disease, which may lead to therapeutic targeting through drugs, he said.
Many of the newly identified variations are in genes that operate in biological pathways involved in the body's metabolism of lipids or fats as well as in inflammation.

A research team reported that next generation sequencing of the exome, the 1 to 2% of the DNA containing the genes that code for proteins, enabled the identification of the genetic causes of unexplained intellectual disability in over 50% of patients in a study conducted at Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
"Through next generation sequencing, we were able to discover mutations in genes that had not been previously linked to causing intellectual disability," said Marjolein Willemsen, M.D., Ph.D., who presented the research today (Nov. 8) at the American Society of Human Genetics 2012 meeting in San Francisco.
Correctly diagnosing children with intellectual disability (ID) can lead to early intervention and special education programs, vocational training and health screenings for associated conditions that will enable them to reach their full potential, said Dr. Willemsen of Radboud's department of human genetics.
Genetic diagnosis "is of major importance for the care and counseling of patients and families," Dr. Willemsen said. "Proper diagnosis provides insight into associated health and behavioral problems, prognosis and recurrence risk."
The cause of intellectual disability is unknown in more than half of patients with learning and other intellectual disabilities, which affect about 2% of the population, said Tjitske Kleefstra, M.D., Ph.D., also of Radboud University Medical Centre's human genetics department.
Participating in the Radboud University study were 253 patients with unexplained intellectual disability, most of whom were adults. They underwent a multidisciplinary clinical evaluation and a metabolic screen. Genome-wide analysis of each patient's DNA was also conducted, and specific genetic diagnostic tests were performed as needed.
Because they used both genetic tests and clinical evaluations, the researchers were able to correlate the biological as well as the behavioral features of each patient's intellectual disability with the DNA findings.
Intellectual disability can be a challenge to diagnose because a wide range of features characterizes these disorders, and the underlying genetic causes can vary widely, Dr. Kleefstra said. "As a result, many parents go from one doctor to another in search of a diagnosis and treatment for their child," she added.
