Libertarian Party gains ballot access

November8,2012 The state now has four official political parties after Tuesdays election.

West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant said today that the Libertarian Party has gained ballot access for 2014 and 2016, based on David Morans performance in the gubernatorial race.

Before the canvassing of the results, Moran had garnered about 1.3 percent of the vote. To gain ballot access in West Virginia, a partys candidate must receive one percent of the total ballots cast in the race for governor.

Ballot access means a Libertarian candidate will not have to collect signatures in order to be placed on the states general election ballot. The Libertarian Party will be able to choose their candidates either in a primary election or by party convention.

More than 8,000 people voted for Moran even though there were just 1,448 voters in West Virginia registered with the Libertarian Party.

Libertarian Reale declares 2014 congressional candidacy

Just as he did two years ago, Libertarian Dan Reale declared his candidacy for Congress on the day after the election, giving himself a two-year head start on all other candidates.

Reale, who lives in Plainfield and is chairman of the Libertarian Party of Connecticut, got 1,432 votes in Tuesdays election, according to totals posted on the website of Secretary of the State Denise Merrill. Democrat Joe Courtney of Vernon won re-election to a fourth term to represent Connecticuts 2nd District. Republican Paul Formica of East Lyme and Green Party candidate Colin Bennett also ran.

Reale ran as a write-in candidate in 2008 and 2010 but was listed on the ballot this year. He plans to step down from the party chairmanship, which is an unpaid position, at the end of this year, he said.

This time well be able to campaign for the entire time instead of waiting on SOTS (the secretary of the state) to see whether were an option or not, Reale wrote in an email.

Reale has been embroiled in signature-validating legal arguments with state officials in the past.

Libertarian Party gets ballot access in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Libertarian Party candidates no longer have to collect signatures to have their name placed on ballots, Secretary of State Natalie Tennant announced Thursday.

To gain access to the ballot, a party's candidate must receive 1 percent of the vote in the governor's race. The libertarian candidate, David Moran, did just that on Tuesday, according to a news release from Tennant's office.

More than 8,000 people voted for Moran even though only 1,448 people in the state are registered with the Libertarian Party, the release noted.

Libertarians will now be able to choose their candidate during a primary election or by party convention.

"Becoming an official political party also means a person cannot run as a primary candidate if they were registered as a member of one of the other official political parties within 60 days of filing to run. People registered with no party affiliation, independent, or any other registration other than the official four parties are not subject to that law," according to the release.

In order to maintain ballot access, the Libertarian Party will have to get at least 1 percent of the total ballots cast in the 2016 governor's race.

Gary Johnson runs most successful Libertarian campaign in party’s history

Gary Johnson is the first Libertarian to get more than 1 million votes. (GaryJohnson2012)He may have received only about 1 percent of the national vote, but Gary Johnson is already the most successful White House candidate in the Libertarian Party's nearly 41-year history.

"Ours is a mission accomplished," Johnson told FoxNews.com. "We put a true small-government, individual-freedom option on the ballot in virtually every state and have assembled an organization that will carry that message forward."

With final vote tallies still being calculated, Johnson's current total of 1,139,562 puts him significantly ahead of any of his party's nine other presidential candidates.

Interestingly, the only other Libertarian Party candidate to receive more than 1 million votes was Georgia Public Service Commission candidate John Monds, who received 1,076,726 votes, or 33.4 percent of the vote, during his 2008 campaign.

The most successful third-party candidate runs have historically been done by independents, most famously by Ross Perot in 1992 (19,743,821 votes, 18.91 percent) and John Anderson in 1980 (5,719,850 votes, 6.61 percent).

1980 was also a good year for Libertarian candidate Ed Clark, whose 921,128 votes and 1.06 percent share of the total vote was the most successful performance by a presidential candidate in his party until Tuesday night.

Still, the Libertarians' first-ever presidential candidate, John G. Hospers, is their most successful candidate by a different measurement. Though he received only 3,674 total votes, he's still the only Libertarian Party presidential candidate to win an Electoral College vote.

Most candidates from the Libertarian Party, which was founded in December 1971, have typically garnered about 500,000 votes in their respective runs.

Johnson said he's buoyed by the results and plans to maintain his role as an advocate for limited government policies. However, when asked, he was unwilling to say whether his historic performance was enough to guarantee another run in 2016.

"It's too soon to be talking about 2016," he said.

Libertarian Party buoyant; Greens hopeful

Cravings for less Washington gave the Libertarian presidential entrant a record vote count while a tight Obama-Romney race hurt the Green Party, officials said.

The nearly 1.2 million votes won by Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson, a former two-term Republican New Mexico governor, supported public-opinion polls showing "consistently that a majority of Americans want less government than we have today," party Executive Director Carla Howell told United Press International.

Johnson, 59, who initially sought the presidential nomination of the Republican Party, won the Libertarian nod at the party's May national convention.

His nationwide vote count -- the highest count of the minor-party candidates -- represents about 1.2 percent of the total popular presidential vote in the 48 states in which Johnson ran, a UPI analysis of Tuesday's results indicated. Johnson was denied ballot positions in Michigan and Oklahoma.

His vote count also beat the previous Libertarian Party record, set in 1980 by lawyer-politician Ed Clark, of 921,128 votes, or 1 percent of the nationwide total.

Johnson had the strongest showing as a percentage of statewide presidential votes in Alaska, Maine, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming, the UPI analysis showed. He had the weakest showing in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York and Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Howell told UPI Wednesday the voter desire for radically less government was so powerful that Johnson might have won Tuesday if the media had covered his campaign more fully and if the Commission on Presidential Debates had let him debate Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"If he had been in the debates, he possibly would have been the president-elect right now," she told UPI.

The commission, which sponsors and produces the debates, is currently directed by former Republican National Committee Chairman Frank Fahrenkopf Jr. and former Clinton administration press secretary Mike McCurry, a Democrat.

Critics say the commission excludes third-party and independent candidates.

Memorial Service for Walter Krepling at Woodlawn Cementary
Thursday November 08, Walter Krepling Memorial Service KREPLING, Walter Jr. (Walt) - July 23, 1921 to November 3, 2012 Walt Krepling grew up in South Ozone Park in the borough of Queens, NY where he excelled at baseball and basketball. As a member of Mike Nelson #39;s Richmond Hill Dodgers in the Queens-Nassau Baseball Alliance, Walt ran up a 27 game hit streak. Walt was invited to Spring Training by the Brooklyn Dodgers, but the war intervened. Walt joined the Army Air Corps, and, after significant amounts of basic training followed by flight training, qualified for assignment as a copilot of a B-17 bomber. On November 16, 1943 Walt flew in his first combat mission out of Tunis, North Africa with a group of 98 other B-17s headed for Le Tube France. They successfully bombed the target but ran into significant flak and 15 or more ME 109 fighter airplanes. Walt soon was promoted to pilot and flew many missions where he was responsible for the men and the airplane. By May 6, 1944 (less than six months) Walt had completed 51 missions and was proud to say that he had brought the men and the airplane home each and every time. (Sometimes pretty banged up) Walt moved on to the Pacific Theater where he served as part of the Second Emergency Rescue Squadron based at Palawan in the Philippine Islands before becoming the personal pilot for Major General Paul Wurtsmith, Commander of the Thirteenth Air Force for the last part of his military career.
