FingerSense Could Finally Make Touchscreens as Versatile as Desktops
Ever since Apple invented the modern touchscreen five years ago with the first iPhone, smartphone input has been very Mac-like: Tapping the screen equals a "click," and there is no equivalent to the more PC-like "right click" for directly accessing secondary menus. The "long press" (where you tap the screen and hold the tip of your finger down for an extra bit of time) comes close, but Chris Harrison didnt think that was good enough--so he invented software that could recognize different kinds of taps, like knuckles and fingernails. In the year since we originally wrote about that software, Harrison and his colleagues have improved the UI and spun it off into a product theyre calling FingerSense. Check it out:
FingerSense is the inaugural product of Harrisons startup, Qeexo, and he tells Co.Design that his team is in talks with Android handset manufacturers to integrate FingerSense into their phones. "[We] see this as a system-wide functionality," he says. "We hope to say good-bye to tap-and-hold as the unwieldy mechanism for triggering extra options."
The catch is that FingerSense requires an extra bit of hardware in order to work--an acoustic sensor that can recognize the unique vibration patterns that distinguish among fingertip, fingernail, and knuckle taps. Which means you cant just download FingerSense from Google Play and magically give your Galaxy Nexus a next-generation user interface--yet. "We are looking to partner with device makers to integrate this sensor, which our software needs," Harrison explains. (In the meantime, developers can email Qeexo for an Android SDK to tinker around with.)
The FingerSense demo video is certainly slick. But as touchscreens lose their last vestiges of futurism and become as mundane as keyboards and mice, theres something ever-so-slightly "jetpack"-esque about the extra interactions that FingerSense provides. Like the initially-awesome-but-now-mostly-just-a-pain-in-the-ass "pinch to zoom" gesture, holding my phone in one hand while twisting my other wrist to knock on it with a fingernail or knuckle doesnt seem any less "unwieldy" than a long press, which I can do with one thumb while walking down the street. This is why smart gestural apps like Clear offer one-thumb "fallbacks" for all of their fancier input methods: sometimes, theyre just plain easier.
FingerSenses two-handed touchscreen input gestures seem much more useful for tablets, whose form factor assumes a more relaxed, mostly two-handed kind of interaction. The software demo even shows a stylus being used, which youd never bother with on a phone. Then again, the flagship Android phones that Qeexo wants to integrate FingerSense into are becoming so waffle-sized that theyre more like small tablets than phones at this point anyway, so maybe it makes sense.
In any case, "a next-generation touchscreen"--as Harrison bills FingerSense--will have to offer more than one way to accept input. Are fingernail-taps and knuckle-knocks going to catch on? Who knows. Interface innovations like FingerSense will, at least, give us the chance to find out.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) Eighty-three new paintings adorn the walls of the Fort Wayne Museum of Artbut it's not just art, it's history, as the faces of those who stood up for our civil rights are showcased.
"Threads Of A Story" is the newest exhibit at Fort Wayne's Museum of Art showcasing the Freedom Riders of the Civil Rights Movement. Artist Charlotta Janssen says she was inspired by the 2008 election.
"After Obama's election, I felt Black History Month from within...and there was this incredible mood that I wanted to capture, this joy. So I really wanted to thank those who have helped us on this way and maybe didn't make it here. And I felt the Civil Rights Movement, especially the Freedom Rides and bus boycotts, are very powerful--it's non-violent direct action in action, said Janssen.
Each painting is a mug shot with newspaper clippings telling the story of each individual Freedom Rider, including Janet Braun Reinitz, who was a Freedom Rider from Brooklyn in 1961, and was arrested in Little Rock, Ark.
"Look at the many faces. Look at the collaboration of people who went into making the Freedom Rides what they were, Reinitz said. Its a moment in timeits one of those moments for everyone who is portrayed here thats marked on a path of who they are and what their activism is. I think no one should look at these portraits and think this is all that any of these people have ever done.
The Freedom Riders rode interstate buses into the South in an effort to end segregation. Riders were attacked and thrown in a jail, moments in history Janssen wanted to capture.
If youre not going to cry at the end of this then I cant help youbut I think its celebrating a great piece of history and a great lesson, said Janssen. "You can read it all you want in a history book, but I think it's also important to feel a time, to feel a history, to feel a message like this.
The message Janssen is referring to, "Civil Rights doesn't just encompass the Black movement. It's the women's movement, it's all of the human rights movement, said Reinitz.
The exhibit "Threads Of A Story" will be on display until Jan. 27.

More freedom for better schools
HIGH-PERFORMING public schools would earn greater freedom to make their own decisions, while underperforming schools would be subjected to intervention and external management, a new paper reveals.
Principals and preschool directors would be given authority to manage staff and their performance, budgets and public reporting, the concept paper, presented to the department's top executives last week, says.
But while principals have backed the need to "remove roadblocks" for successful schools, they warned against the risk of turning schools into rivals.
"The better a site is performing, the more autonomy it can have from external management by the state. Conversely, preschools or schools that are not performing well require a higher level of external management, intervention and support," the paper states.
Principals have been told changes would start in 2014 and be implemented over five years.
An Education Department spokeswoman said the paper was part of a broader discussion that began following recent state and federal reforms to devolve public education systems.
"The idea is very much at the conceptual stage and the paper presented at the schools executive was designed to encourage thinking and discussion among school leaders," the spokeswoman said.
The idea follows similar moves in WA and NSW where schools are allowed to make decisions about their curriculums, staffing, school resources, educational programs and expenditure.
SA Secondary Principals Association president Jan Paterson said any policy change must ensure schools were not pitted against each other.
"We do have pockets of fabulous work but at times we find roadblocks to do it and we need to ensure there are no roadblocks."

This Veteran's Day marked the first year of operations for Freedom Center, which has hosted more than 30,000 members of the military, their family members and veterans during their travels through Detroit.
"It is no surprise to me or any of my fellow Michigan Freedom Center board members that Ken would receive an award that recognizes his service to the community and exceptional service to his customers," said Senator Patrick Colbeck, (R-7th district). "He is a living example of a life lived in humble service to others. The world is a much better place with leaders such as Ken Pratt."
"I am truly honored to receive this award," said Pratt. "However, the success of Freedom Center is due to the collective dedication of numerous individuals and organizations. It has been a collaborative effort and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to serve our military personnel traveling through Detroit Metropolitan Airport."
Freedom Center is staffed by volunteers seven days a week, 365 days a year. Operating hours are from 6:00 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. However, many nights Freedom Center has operated around the clock when travelling soldiers, sailors and Marines are stranded due to flight delays or weather issues.
