The University of Cincinnati has been in talks with Chinese officials about adding a medical school campus in that country. College of Medicine Dean Tom Boat recently updated university trustees about the discussions. Tens of millions of dollars would be needed in donations to make the UC campus a reality, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported. But supporters point to the potential for new growth and revenue in the world's largest nation by population. "It would allow us to have an international connection with China that would really push our globalization efforts forward," Boat told professors and students last week. China is the leading source for international students for UC, with 962 Chinese students enrolled this year. The university already has a number of collaboration and project agreements in China. Boat emphasized the plans are in very early stages with Chongqing Medical University, which has four hospitals with 5,000 beds and treats millions of outpatients annually. "If the plan plays out, yes, it would be a UC-branded campus," Boat said. Duke University, in Durham, N.C., has moved ahead with its plans for a China campus in partnership with Chinese educators. Duke Kunshan University operations are currently expected to begin in the 2013-14 academic year, pending final approval from Chinese officials. UC's College of Medicine could use another source of revenue. The medical school lost $7 million on operating costs, while receiving a $10 million one-time payment from Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center. UC gave out $2.66 million in institutional aid to medical students in the 2010-11 school year, compared to $5.8 million by Ohio State University, the Cincinnati newspaper reported.

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences got orders from GW's top leader this month to accelerate the search to fill its deanship, after nearly two years of temporary leadership.
University President Steven Knapp and Provost Steven Lerman directed the schools faculty executive committee to launch an expedited dean search to stabilize GWs most selective and richest school the first sign of movement in its stalled hunt for a permanent leader.
The accelerated process should produce a new dean within months, rather than a year, Knapp said, charging the executive committee with appointing a group of faculty to lead the search, instead of waiting for dean nominations.
Having gone through two years of interim transition, it was time now to move forward with establishing and stabilizing the leadership of the medical school, and this was the time to take that step, Knapp said. Thats now started. It should not take as long as a full-dress dean search.
The search committee will be picked by the medical schools executive faculty committee, Lerman said. He added that leaders are still deciding if a consulting firm would be brought in to assist the search.
The expedited search committee will include eight faculty members, one student and a member of the Board of Trustees or an alumnus from the school. University spokeswoman Candace Smith declined to provide specifics about the search beyond the school's bylaws.
Marc Blackman, a professor of medicine, said he was looking for transparency from senior leadership and the search committee when selecting a permanent dean.
And while hastening the search will bring much-needed permanency to the post, Blackman said he would have preferred a more comprehensive search.
[Candidates] need to have a very strong, well-articulated vision as to how to maintain and grow the multi-disciplinary excellence at the University, Blackman said.
The medical schools interim leader, Jeffrey Akman, has been in place since former dean James Scott resigned in November 2010. In addition to overseeing plans for a new curriculum and career services, Akman managed the schools partnerships with the GW Hospital, the Medical Faculty Associates and the schools that formerly comprised the GW Medical Center: the School of Public Health and Health Services and the School of Nursing. Until 2011, the schools shared budgets, bylaws and other operations, but the reorganization gave each school and each dean authority to grow research, faculty and academic programs.

Supporters have hope that with the passage of Prop. 30 and Californias slowly improving economy, the funding pitch will get a better reception in Sacramento than in the past. The school is scheduled to open in fall 2013.
The same $15 million request was made two years ago.
When Gov. Jerry Brown and the Legislature removed the expenditure from the UCs final budget, it essentially cost the medical school its accreditation. The Liaison Committee for Medical Education decided that the medical school, without the state funding, did not have enough money to sustain itself.
Brown turned down a request for money this year as well.
Meantime, UCR officials and supporters had raised enough in commitments from local government and private sources, along with the assurance of a loan from the UC Regents, to guarantee $10 million each year over the next 10 years. In October, the school received preliminary accreditation.
The state funding is still vital, according to the schools dean, G. Richard Olds. Without that money, he said, UCRs medical school cannot operate at full capacity.
Phyllis Guze, the schools associate dean, said Sacramento should be more receptive this time around.
What were hoping is that the governor and the legislators will support the funding now that theres a light at the end of the tunnel, Guze said. Id like to tell you that were optimistic, but weve been optimistic for the last three years.

Freezes caused by MSI Afterburner (oh well. Time for a faster hard drive or get a SSD :P) Nice looking visuals with the fresh and the familiar Assassin #39;s Creed gameplay formula. Assassin #39;s Creed 3 is indeed a great game to play. It is also the first in the franchise to utilize DirectX 11. (And DirectX 11 only :P) The game has resemblance to Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty because you #39;ll play as another playable character called Haytham Kenway first before Connor (who has been shown in all of the trailers). In MGS2, you #39;ll play Raiden (who has never been seen in all of the promotional trailers of the game) instead of Solid Snake later in the game. Pretty interesting.
