Speech given at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, Dec. 6, 2012 to the Economics and Sustainability Clubs. "Teach them Correct Principles and they Govern Themselves". People living their lives based on true and correct principles is the basis for sustainability. I was invited to give a talk to the Economics club at the University of the South on our independent local currency initiative, the Sewanee Dollar. But when the sponsor, a student representing the Economics Club read my BLOG, he decided there is much more to the story and invited the Sustainability Clubs to attend. He admitted to being a closet Libertarian, an unpopular position at liberal Sewanee U. Then he said he was having a hard time reconciling "sustainability" with some of the libertarian views I had written about. In his mind, these are polar opposites. To which I responded, "I can #39;t imagine being sustainable without adherence to these true principles. For many years now, I have been told by our partners and operators in Mentawai and Sumatra that what is technically referred to as the Off Season in the region, is more like secret gold untapped. This period is between December and February. But like most of us Indo lovers, I had normally made sure my surf trips to Indo have been peak or shoulder season to get maximum swell size. But as I have got a bit older, I have found that you start having as much fun in smaller surf as you did in the bigger stuff. You also really appreciate having the waves to yourself and not sharing with too many other people. So normally during this time of year I love to get up to PNG, Caroline Solomon Islands and of course Hawaii. However this year I thought we would have a shot at Sumatra and hit it in Feb. Embattled Cayman Islands premier ousted in no-confidence vote

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (Reuters) - Lawmakers in the Cayman Islands passed a vote of no confidence on Tuesday ousting embattled Premier McKeeva Bush from office one week after he was arrested on suspicion of corruption.

Members of parliament voted 11 to 3 with one abstention to remove Bush as the head of government in the British territory, which is a major financial center, offshore home to more than half of the world's hedge funds, and a leading global tax haven.

British-appointed Governor Duncan Taylor was expected to announce on Wednesday whether he would appoint a new premier or dissolve parliament and call early elections. Elections had previously been set for May.

Bush, a veteran politician who became premier in 2009, has denied any wrongdoing and dismissed calls to resign as premier of the Caribbean island chain after his arrest.

However, support within his own party began to dwindle in the days following his detention.

Five lawmakers from Bush's United Democratic Party joined the opposition in calling for the no-confidence vote, which needed support from 10 lawmakers in the 15-member Legislative Assembly to force Bush from office.

Bush, 57, was arrested on December 11 by members of the Financial Crime Unit of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. He was released on bail until February, pending the possible filing of criminal charges against him.

Authorities have declined to give specific details of the investigation but said it included allegations of theft and misuse of a government credit card.

Bush, who has been the target of corruption probes for more than a year, has said he is the victim of a "political witch hunt" mounted by Taylor and other opponents. British officials have denied the claims.

Opposition Leader Alden McLaughlin said last week that allowing Bush to continue as premier after his arrest would undermine confidence in the Cayman Islands, a three-island territory with about 55,000 residents.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (Reuters) - The Cayman Islands' governor appointed Deputy Premier Julianna O'Connor-Connolly as premier of the British Caribbean territory on Wednesday, refusing a request by the ousted premier to dissolve parliament and call early elections.

O'Connor-Connolly, 51, succeeds McKeeva Bush, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote of the legislature on Tuesday, a week after his arrest on suspicion of corruption.

British-appointed Governor Duncan Taylor said he appointed O'Connor-Connolly on the advice of a majority of lawmakers from the ruling United Democratic Party, which holds nine seats in the 15-member Legislative Assembly.

"I am satisfied that the Honorable Julianna O'Connor-Connolly can form a stable, functioning government," Taylor said.

The Cayman Islands are a major financial center, offshore home to more than half of the world's hedge funds, and a leading global tax haven.

The governor said Bush had asked him to dissolve parliament and call new elections but that "after careful consideration and using my discretion as the Constitution entitles me to do," he instead appointed O'Connor-Connolly as premier.

General elections are to take place as previously scheduled on May 22 and O'Connor-Connolly planned to meet later on Wednesday with her newly shuffled Cabinet.

"My colleagues and I are determined to move this country forward in a united fashion with honesty and integrity and in all-inclusive government," she told Reuters.

"We will continue to work on enhancing our relationship with the United Kingdom and we are certainly going to make all efforts to empower the people so that our modus operandi is one of a consultative government."

O'Connor-Connolly was first elected to the legislature in 1996 and was a founding member of the United Democratic Party.
