Edgar Cahoon: ‘There is still so much basic knowledge to learn’ – Chemistry World

Edgar Cahoon is a biochemistry professor and director of the Center for Plant Science Innovation at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln (UNL). His research group conducts basic and applied research on plant lipid metabolism that aims to enhance the nutritional and industrial value of crop plants.

I grew up in Eastern Virginia in the US on a dairy farm. My father had passed away, and my mother got remarried when I was about five years old to a dairy farmer. Later, we went to growing crops soybean and corn and I really developed an interest in plants. I was fascinated by all the chemical diversity that you can see in them.

I wanted to be a scientist. I was just curious about how things work, and I guess science is what you naturally gravitate to when you are that way.

At university, I started out in horticulture, but realised that didnt tell me anything about what I wanted to know, which was how plants work. So, I switched to biochemistry and have been doing plant biochemistry ever since.

My first car was a 1980 Chevrolet Citation, and I got it when I was a sophomore in college at Virginia Tech. I did a cooperative education programme and worked at the Food and Drug Administration in Washington, DC. I needed the car to commute I was part of a carpool and had to drive people around. So yeah, I drove five big men in a little Chevrolet Citation.

I have moved around a lot in my career. I started out working at a large company, after my postdoc. When Ive changed jobs its not because I wasnt performing well, I just wanted more of a challenge and more freedom in my science. It took a lot of courage to make these moves that ended up with me being at a university, but I am happy I did that. Maybe the hardest thing Ive done is to take risks when trying to find a situation that I was most happy with for my career.

In industry, you have to learn how to not be an egomaniac. Youve got to be able to work in teams, and this is quite useful for going to a university. My colleagues who havent been in industry sometimes have a different perception about how they share resources and so forth. Industry is collaborative typically you dont do a project on your own.

I garden a lot, I enjoy that. In the summertime, the tomatoes and cucumbers that we eat are almost all from our garden. But then, during the wintertime and other parts of the year when the garden isnt growing anything , we buy our produce from the grocery store.

I also do a lot of road biking going long distances on the bike. Nebraska is quite nice for that, we have a lot of backroads where the traffic is not so heavy. You can see the countryside on a bicycle, and get some exercise and fresh air. I am part of a cycling club, and they have a 60-mile ride that is not competitive.

We still have so much basic information to learn about how a cell works

Being at UNL, you have to like Cornhusker football [the universitys American football team]. We all keep up with that. There is a lot of local interest in seeing what the team is going to be like for the fall. There is worry that there wont be football this fall.

A coffee shop is my favourite place to think and get work done. I like being away from people and distractions like television, and just focusing on what I do. Sometimes at coffee shops you can also overhear other peoples conversations, and it can be quite good entertainment.

I like to think that I am doing synthetic biology, but I realise that we dont really know what were doing in many cases. We still have so much basic information to learn about how a cell works before we can ever be able to really predictively manipulate it. We talk about synthetic biology that someday we will be able to sit at a computer and have all of this omics data in hand and just dial-in whatever change we want to make but there is still so much basic knowledge to learn.

There maybe is a feeling among the broader scientific community that we have learned everything there is to know on a basic level that we can now just go in and very carefully manipulate things. But we will need to have a major focus on foundational basic research rather than making this huge leap towards translation. We cant lose sight of the importance of foundational research.

What is the ACE2 receptor, how is it connected to coronavirus and why might it be key to treating COVID-19? The experts explain – The Conversation US

In the search for treatments for COVID-19, many researchers are focusing their attention on a specific protein that allows the virus to infect human cells. Called the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, or ACE2 receptor, the protein provides the entry point for the coronavirus to hook into and infect a wide range of human cells. Might this be central in how to treat this disease?

We are scientists with expertise in pharmacology, molecular biology and biochemistry, with a strong commitment to applying these skills to the discovery of novel therapies for human disease. In particular, all three authors have experience studying angiotensin signaling in various disease settings, a biochemical pathway that appears to be central in COVID-19. Here are some of the key issues to understand about why theres so much focus on this protein.

ACE2 is a protein on the surface of many cell types. It is an enzyme that generates small proteins by cutting up the larger protein angiotensinogen that then go on to regulate functions in the cell.

Using the spike-like protein on its surface, the SARS-CoV-2 virus binds to ACE2 like a key being inserted into a lock prior to entry and infection of cells. Hence, ACE2 acts as a cellular doorway a receptor for the virus that causes COVID-19.

ACE2 is present in many cell types and tissues including the lungs, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver and gastrointestinal tract. It is present in epithelial cells, which line certain tissues and create protective barriers.

The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and blood vessels occurs across this epithelial lining in the lung. ACE2 is present in epithelium in the nose, mouth and lungs. In the lungs, ACE2 is highly abundant on type 2 pneumocytes, an important cell type present in chambers within the lung called alveoli, where oxygen is absorbed and waste carbon dioxide is released.

ACE2 is a vital element in a biochemical pathway that is critical to regulating processes such as blood pressure, wound healing and inflammation, called the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) pathway.

ACE2 helps modulate the many activities of a protein called angiotensin II (ANG II) that increases blood pressure and inflammation, increasing damage to blood vessel linings and various types of tissue injury. ACE2 converts ANG II to other molecules that counteract the effects of ANG II.

Of greatest relevance to COVID-19, ANG II can increase inflammation and the death of cells in the alveoli which are critical for bringing oxygen into the body; these harmful effects of ANG II are reduced by ACE2.

When the SARS-CoV-2 virus binds to ACE2, it prevents ACE2 from performing its normal function to regulate ANG II signaling. Thus, ACE2 action is inhibited, removing the brakes from ANG II signaling and making more ANG II available to injure tissues. This decreased braking likely contributes to injury, especially to the lungs and heart, in COVID-19 patients.

No. ACE2 is present in all people but the quantity can vary among individuals and in different tissues and cells. Some evidence suggests that ACE2 may be higher in patients with hypertension, diabetes and coronary heart disease. Studies have found that a lack of ACE2 (in mice) is associated with severe tissue injury in the heart, lungs and other tissue types.

This is unclear. The SARS-CoV-2 virus requires ACE2 to infect cells but the precise relationship between ACE2 levels, viral infectivity and severity of infection are not well understood.

Even so, aside from its ability to bind the SARS-CoV-2 virus, ACE2 has protective effects against tissue injury, by mitigating the pathological effects of ANG II.

When the amount of ACE2 is reduced because the virus is occupying the receptor, individuals may be more susceptible to severe illness from COVID-19. That is because enough ACE2 is available to facilitate viral entry but the decrease in available ACE2 contributes to more ANG II-mediated injury. In particular, reducing ACE2 will increase susceptibility to inflammation, cell death and organ failure, especially in the heart and the lung.

The lungs are the primary site of injury by SARS-CoV-2 infection, which causes COVID-19. The virus reaches the lungs after entry in the nose or mouth.

ANG II drives lung injury. If there is a decrease in ACE2 activity (because the virus is binding to it), then ACE2 cant break down the ANG II protein, which means there is more of it to cause inflammation and damage in the body.

The virus also impacts other tissues that express ACE2, including the heart, where damage and inflammation (myocarditis) can occur. The kidneys, liver and digestive tract can also be injured. Blood vessels may also be a site for damage.

In a recent research paper, we argued that a key factor that determines severity of damage in patients with COVID-19 is abnormally high ANG II activity.

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE, aka ACE1) is another protein, also found in tissues such as the lung and heart, where ACE2 is present. Drugs that inhibit the actions of ACE1 are called ACE inhibitors. Examples of these drugs are ramipril, lisinopril, and enalapril. These drugs block the actions of ACE1 but not ACE2. ACE1 drives the production of ANG II. In effect, ACE1 and ACE2 have a yin-yang relationship; ACE1 increases the amount of ANG II, whereas ACE2 reduces ANG II.

By inhibiting ACE1, ACE inhibitors reduce the levels of ANG II and its ability to increase blood pressure and tissue injury. ACE inhibitors are commonly prescribed for patients with hypertension, heart failure and kidney disease.

Another commonly prescribed class of drugs, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs, e.g., losartan, valsartan, etc.) have similar effects to ACE inhibitors and may also be useful in treating COVID-19.

Evidence for a protective effect of ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers in patients with COVID-19 was shown in recent work co-authored by one of us - Dr. Loomba.

No evidence exists to suggest prophylactic use of these drugs; we do not advise readers to take these drugs in the hopes that they will prevent COVID-19. We wish to emphasize that patients should only take these drugs as instructed by their health care provider.

In collaboration with a multidisciplinary group of investigators, Dr. Loomba has initiated a multicenter (randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled) clinical trial to examine the efficacy of ramipril - an ACE inhibitor - compared to a placebo in reducing mortality, ICU admission or need for mechanical ventilation in patients with COVID-19.

The coronavirus might have weak spots. Machine learning could help find them. – News@Northeastern

Chemically speaking, proteins might be the most sophisticated molecules out there. Millions of different kinds of them live within our cells and work together as a fine-tuned orchestra catalyzing the biochemical reactions that keep us alive.

Few things in the world would function without proteinsnot the cells within your body, and certainly not SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19.

The proteins in the coronavirus facilitate its remarkable ability to infect human cells without resulting in visible symptoms of COVID-19 for long periods of time. Thats why researchers around the world have been investigating the roles of each of the 29 proteins packed inside SARS-CoV-2.

By learning more about each of those proteins at the molecular level, researchers want to pin down the exact parts of the SARS-CoV-2 proteins that enable it to bind itself to other proteins on the surface of human cells and enable the virus to replicate. The idea is to inhibit those chemical reactions right from the start, and render the coronavirus ineffective.

To analyze those protein interactions, Northeastern researchers are bringing another set of tools to study the coronavirus proteins down to their amino acids, the building blocks of all proteins.

Mary Jo Ondrechen, a professor of chemistry and chemical biology, wants to identify all of the amino acids responsible for the abilities of the coronavirus to infect and thrive at the expense of human cells. Together with Penny Beuning, a professor of chemistry and chemical biology, Ondrechen recently received a grant from the National Science Foundation to use machine learning algorithms and experimental lab work to do just that.

Proteins are long chains of molecules that function through cascading interactions with amino acids form other proteins. But those interactions dont always occur in the same place within the structure of a protein where the protein carries out its chemical reaction. Often, although the interactions happen outside of that site, they still control the reaction. A specific site within a protein can also control the action of different proteins, helping or hindering a specific chemical reaction.

Changes in protein behavior resulting from these networks of interactions, or from preventing interactions, are known as allosteric regulation. Ondrechens algorithm predicts many of these and other types of interactions based on the specific molecular structures of proteins.

Research led by her and Beuning could help researchers gain a better understanding of the biochemistry of SARS-CoV-2, and serve as the basis for developing new drugs to inhibit its infectious abilities.

Researchers around the world have been rushing to develop new chemicals that show promise as compounds that could hinder the coronavirus by interacting with its main active proteins.

Still, scientists are just beginning to understand many of the coronavirus proteins. And, Ondrechen says, there might be sites within those poorly understood proteins that researchers might be failing to notice.

The program, which Ondrechens lab invented in 2009, analyzes the chemical properties of each of the individual amino acids within a protein. It could predict the roles of important but subtle interactions in SARS-CoV-2 involving amino acids that arent directly linked to the main reaction sites, and which would be too difficult to analyze with conventional bioinformatic research.

In the main protease, everybody knows where the catalytic site is, in the RNA transferase, everybody knows where the catalytic site is, Ondrechen says. Our technology is special because we could predict exo-sites, allosteric sites, and other binding sites or interaction sites that can control.

The program will run those predictions against databases that include tens of thousands of compounds with anti-viral properties and compounds found in food, all in a major attempt to find proteins that might hit the predicted sites of protein interaction.

Once the program runs the computational analysis to find candidate proteins to inhibit SARS-CoV-2, it will guide Beunings experimental tests in her lab.

Well be looking at the protein level: Do the compounds actually bind those proteins, and do they modulate the activity of the protein? Beuning says. Ideally, they would inhibit the activity of the protein, and then impair the virus.

For the past 10 years, Ondrechen and Beuning have been combining their computational and experimental power to understand such questions as how proteins control the production of our DNA, and how proteins enable our bodies to carry out some of the most important metabolic functions.

Now, they are planning to move as fast as possible to identify important protein interactions in SARS-CoV-2, test them in the lab, and move on with further tests in live organisms.

Our plans are to finish in six months, Ondrechen says. If we come up with interesting compounds in vitro, hopefully we can find a collaborator that could do in vivo testing.

Greg Phillips and Heeyoung Tai receive Excellence in Advising Award – The Miami Student

By Kristal Humphrey, university news and communications

Excellence in Academic Advising awards were presented to Greg Phillips in music and Heeyoung Tai in chemistry and biochemistry. Both are chief departmental advisers.

The award recognizes faculty and staff members who spend a significant portion of their time providing exemplary academic advising services to undergraduate students and have exhibited exceptional leadership in advancing academic advising at Miami. Nominees must also provide outstanding support for and accessibility to students.

Phillips, associate professor of music, has been at Miami for nearly 30 years and has been a chief departmental adviser for more than 10 years.

His nominators say Phillips, who is affectionately known as GP, is widely praised by students and faculty alike and both turn to him for guidance.

One nominator said if people had the opportunity to ask any student in music about GP, they would learn that he is not only respected and valued, but beloved. This is because they know he is there for them, and that he will do whatever is necessary to ensure their success.

Mentioning the complexity of the music department curriculum, one nominator says, Greg helps to shepherd students through this maze of requirements with a steady hand and generous heart. Im not sure a single student graduates with a degree in music without having engaged with Greg on at least one occasion.

In addition to being the chief departmental adviser for chemistry and biochemistry, Tai is also a senior lecturer, faculty adviser for the pre-med academic scholars program, faculty adviser to the Korean Student Association, and faculty associate for the Mallory-Wilson Center for Healthcare Education.

She was recognized for her work as an individual adviser through the Mallory-Wilson Center when she received its Pre-Health Education Center Faculty Recognition Award in 2015.

Nominators praise Tai for her commitment to students and not only mentoring majors in her own department, but also pre-medical studies co-majors from other departments.

In appointments with Tai, a student not only learns about academic rules and requirements but also learns to use critical thinking skills to break goals down into achievable tasks, one nominator said.

Commenting on Tais ability to establish rapport with students, a nominator said, Many students continue to share their accomplishments with Heeyoung long after graduation because they know she will celebrate their successes as she did when she was their academic adviser on campus.

Viruses: are they alive? – KCW London – Kensington Chelsea & Westminster Today

Sometimes, it can help to think about a topic from an objective, scientific point of view. This can help to ease anxieties surrounding the subject. With all the overwhelming influx of news centering around one subject lately, lets take a moment to get away from Covid-19, and think about a virus and its relationship to life from a scientific perspective.

Is a virus alive? In order to answer this question, we must first think about life. What is life? What does life need, and what defines something as living? Heres an interesting fact: there is no general accepted definition of life.

There are countless lenses to explore the question of what is alive: physiological, metabolic, biochemical, molecular and genetic, to name a few. Yet, with all of these subdisciplines of biological sciences, there is no generally accepted definition of life. Yes, there are vast collections based on years of research and studies on all kinds of organisms; there are hundreds of thousands of different ways to understand how life has evolved in the past 3.5 billion years. Yet with all of this data, we cant even agree on one thing: what makes something living?

The more we explore our own world and the worlds around us, both within and beyond our solar system, the definition of living is stretched further beyond our conception. Living things generally need to be made up of one or more cells (have an inside and an outside), have a metabolism, or use energy to carry out functions. An organism must be able to maintain its internal environment, grow, reproduce, respond to external stimuli, and excrete waste. Simple, no? Even with such a simplistic list, there are exceptions. For example, mules cannot reproduce, but they are indeed alive!

Viruses used to be thought of as the simplest form of all gene-bearing life forms. In 1935, Wendell M. Stanley & colleagues at NYU crystallized a virus (tobacco mosaic virus) for the first time. The scientists saw that the virus consisted of a package of complex biochemicals and nucleic acids (DNA or RNA) enclosed in a protein coat that may also contain viral proteins involved in infection. Viruses lack the essential systems necessary for metabolic functions, the biochemical activity of life. Based on this, a virus seemed to be more like a chemistry set than an organism.

Everything changes when a virus enters a cell. It becomes very active, and starts to self-replicate; a widely agreed upon function of life. Heres the thing: Viruses are only self-replicating and environment-altering when they enter a host, therefore they must rely on the host. Living organisms are thought to require a degree of biochemical autonomy, meaning they are able to carry on the metabolic activities that produce the molecules and energy needed to sustain themselves without another organisms help. A bacterium, for example, is considered alive because although it consists of a single cell, it is able to generate energy and the molecules needed to sustain itself and can reproduce, unlike a virus.

Each biological speciality tends to define life on its own terms. If were going by, say, a physiological definition, aliens visiting from another planet might very well believe that automobiles are alive! Vehicles can be considered to consume, metabolize, excrete, breathe, move and respond to external stimuli. With this line of thinking, cars could even be considered the dominant life form on the planet due to how landscapes have been designed for their benefit.

Viruses can be seen as being on the border between chemistry and life. So, its ultimately up to you: what makes something alive?

Scientists shed light on action of key tuberculosis drug – University of Birmingham

A new study led by scientists at the University of Birmingham has shed fresh light on how a key front-line drug kills the tuberculosis bacterium.

The research paves the way for development of new antibiotic drugs targeted at emerging strains of TB.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health challenge, responsible for around 1.5 million deaths each year, with particularly high incidences in India, China and Indonesia. There is an urgency to better understand how effective drugs work against the disease because of the emergence and spread of new strains including multi-drug resistant and extensively resistant strains.

Called ethambutol, the drug the scientists were studying has been a mainstay in the fight against TB since its discovery in 1961. Despite this, the drugs mode of action the way it kills the bacterium has not been fully confirmed by scientists.

In this study, published in the journal Science, the research team succeeded in confirming that particular groups of proteins within the TB bacterium, called Emb proteins, are targeted by ethambutol. Although the importance of these proteins had previously been recognised, a lack of structural and biochemical data had prevented scientists from confirming precisely how the drug targets them.

The study, carried out in collaboration with scientists from ShanghaiTech, in China, and the University of Queensland in Australia, succeeds in overcoming this barrier.

Researchers used cryogenic electron microscopy and x-ray imaging to study the structures of a series of Emb proteins for the first time. They were able to show how different Emb proteins were responsible for specific physiological functions producing crucial components of the TB cell wall.

They were also able to show how ethambutol binds to and inactivates these Emb proteins.

Professor Gurdyal S. Besra, in the Institute of Microbiology and Infection and the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham, is a lead author of the paper. He says: This exciting breakthrough with our colleagues from China and Australia will inform a range of medical researchers from a wide range of disciplines; from structural biologists, biochemists, chemists, and microbiologists, and most importantly, scientists in the pharmaceutical industry aiming to develop new TB antibiotics targeting this unique set of proteins for the first time.

The research was funded in the UK by the Medical Research Council.

Functional Cooperation of Glycine Synthasereductase and Wood-Ljungdahl Pathways for Autotrophic Growth – Mirage News

A joint research team, affiliated with UNIST has identified a new metabolic pathway, in which microorganisms utilize single carbon (C1) gases (CO and CO2) as a feedstock. The new metabolic pathway is thought to be the most energetically efficient pathway, compared to the existing ones, and thus is expected to be used in a variety of industrial applications that involved the conversion of C1 gas into value-added biochemicals.

Published in the March 13th issue of PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America), this research has been jointly carried out by Professor Donghyuk Kim (School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, UNIST) and Professor Byung-Kwan Cho (Department of Biological Sciences, KAIST), and thus participated by Dr. Yoseb Song (Department of Biological Sciences, KAIST), as the first author.

There are currently six autotrophic CO2 fixation pathways, capable of converting C1 gas into organic compounds and one representative example is the photosynthesis in plants. Among those CO2-fixing metabolic pathways in nature, the linear wood-ljungdahl pathway (WLP) in phylogenetically diverse acetateforming acetogens is known to be the most energetically efficient pathway to fix C1 compounds. In particular, acetogens play an important role in the global carbon cycle, with nearly 1013 kg (100 billion US tons) of acetic acid being formed annually.

However, the growth rate of acetogens is 10 times slower than that of industrial microorganisms, such as E. coli. And this puts a limit on its use as industrial microorganisms for the conversion of C1 gas into useful biochemical products. Accordingly, many studies on a new and more effective CO2 fixation have been carried out.

The research team paid special attention to the growth rate of Clostridium drakei, which was faster than that of the other microorganisms, when accompanied by CO2 absorption. And, through this, they expected they might find clues to enhance the C1 gas conversion efficiency.

Figure 1. Acetyl-CoA production ratio in wild-type and knockout strains.

In this study, using the reconstructed genome-scale metabolic model iSL771 based on the completed genome sequence, transcriptomics, 13C isotope-based metabolite-tracing experiments, biochemical assays, and heterologous expression of the pathway in another acetogen, the research team discovered that the WLP and the glycine synthase pathway are functionally interconnected to fix CO2, subsequently converting CO2 into acetyl-CoA, acetyl-phosphate, and serine.

Moreover, the functional cooperation of the pathways enhances CO2 consumption and cellular growth rates via bypassing reducing power required reactions for cellular metabolism during autotrophic growth of acetogens.

Figure 2. Construction of the genome-scale metabolic network model of C. drakei (iSL771).

With the new CO2-fixing metabolic pathway, we shall overcome limitations in the biosynthesis for the production of high value-added compounds, brought by the slow growth rate of acetogens, says Professor Kim.

This work has been supported by the Intelligent Synthetic Biology Centre of the Global Frontier Project and the C1 Gas Refinery Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and KAIST Cross-Generation Collaborative Research Group (KAIST Biodesign Engineering Laboratory).

Experts Reveal Beating Heart of Photosynthesis Can Help Us Meet Urgent Food Security Needs – SciTechDaily

Protein structure solved by study. Credit: University of Sheffield

Scientists have solved the structure of one of the key components of photosynthesis, a discovery that could lead to photosynthesis being redesigned to achieve higher yields and meet urgent food security needs.

The study, led by the University of Sheffield and published in the journal Nature, reveals the structure of cytochrome b6f the protein complex that significantly influences plant growth via photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is the foundation of life on Earth providing the food, oxygen, and energy that sustains the biosphere and human civilization.

Using a high-resolution structural model, the team found that the protein complex provides the electrical connection between the two light-powered chlorophyll-proteins (Photosystems I and II) found in the plant cell chloroplast that convert sunlight into chemical energy.

Lorna Malone, the first author of the study and a Ph.D. student in the University of Sheffields Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, said: Our study provides important new insights into how cytochrome b6f utilizes the electrical current passing through it to power up a proton battery. This stored energy can then be then used to make ATP, the energy currency of living cells. Ultimately this reaction provides the energy that plants need to turn carbon dioxide into the carbohydrates and biomass that sustain the global food chain.

The high-resolution structural model, determined using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, reveals new details of the additional role of cytochrome b6f as a sensor to tune photosynthetic efficiency in response to ever-changing environmental conditions. This response mechanism protects the plant from damage during exposure to harsh conditions such as drought or excess light.

Dr. Matt Johnson, reader in Biochemistry at the University of Sheffield and one of the supervisors of the study added: Cytochrome b6f is the beating heart of photosynthesis which plays a crucial role in regulating photosynthetic efficiency.

Previous studies have shown that by manipulating the levels of this complex we can grow bigger and better plants. With the new insights we have obtained from our structure we can hope to rationally redesign photosynthesis in crop plants to achieve the higher yields we urgently need to sustain a projected global population of 9-10 billion by 2050.

The research was conducted in collaboration with the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology at the University of Leeds.

Researchers now aim to establish how cytochrome b6f is controlled by a myriad of regulatory proteins and how these regulators affect the function of this complex.

Is CBD An Effective Detox Product? – The Fresh Toast

The notion of detoxifying or cleansing the body, commonly for wellness or weight loss, is a popular concept, with many different types of programs marketed towards the public. Health supplements and ingredients are often included in these detox/cleanse products, such as kale, acai berries, and, of course, CBD.

With growth and interest in cannabidiol, its no surprise that these products are now being made with CBD as the purported active ingredient. Unfortunately, theres little science to back up the concept of detoxification. Possibly adding to the confusion are CBDs actual positive effects in treating certain conditions.

Detox and cleansing products promise to remove impurities and toxins from the body, improving health and wellbeing. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, there have been no quality studies on the efficacy of advertised and popular cleansing routines and products. In fact, some cleanses can be dangerous, leading to possible kidney and heart problems, and unpasteurized juice can cause those with weakened immunity serious illness.

Thats not to say that cannabidiol is not without its curative properties. CBD has been shown to reduce inflammation, obesity, diabetes, and promote cardiovascular health. A study conducted by the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology at University of Massachusetts Medical School and published in the journal Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, found that CBDs interaction with endocannabinoid receptors impacted the regulation of inflammation.

Research published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry found that CBD shows promise in the regulation of obesity. And a multi-departmental study at the State University, Maringa in Brazil and published in the journal Chemico-Biological Interactions found that CBD mitigated the effects of diabetes and lowered total cholesterol levels in lab rats.

Unlike unproven and potentially dangerous cleansing trends and detox products, CBD has been shown to improve health or at least shows potential in treating ailments, although more research is needed to better understand the therapeutic properties of cannabidiol.
