Liverpool Local News: Can a future be found for The Futurist cinema in Liverpool city centre?

A CAMPAIGN to save the facade of one of Liverpools most loved former cinemas has been launched.

The Futurist in Lime Street opened in 1912, but has sat empty and abandoned since it closed in 1982.

Numerous plans to renovate the building have since been and gone.

Its ground floor is boarded up, broken windows have left it exposed to the elements and bushes grow from cracks in the facade.

Lesley Mullally, who launched the campaign, said as Liverpools first purpose built and longest running cinema its impressive facade deserves to be preserved.

But it is not listed or in a conservation area and she fears without action the building could collapse and be lost forever.

An online petition calling on Liverpool council to take action has attracted more than 600 names in little more than a week.

The 34-year-old air hostess, who lives in Sefton Park, said:

I do not have any personal memories of going there, I was four when it closed.

Every time I got the bus into town and passed lime street I gazed at the splendour of the it.

Editorial: A new birth of freedom

FILE - This Feb. 18, 2005 file photo shows the original Emancipation Proclamation on display in the Rotunda of the National Archives in Washington. As New Year's Day approached 150 years ago, all eyes were on President Abraham Lincoln in expectation of what he warned 100 days earlier would be coming _ his final proclamation declaring all slaves in states rebelling against the Union to be "forever free." A tradition began on Dec. 31, 1862, as many black churches held Watch Night services, awaiting word that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation would take effect as the country was in the midst of a bloody Civil War. Later, congregations listened as the president's historic words were read aloud. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

Associated Press

Today marks the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation revered today as a major milestone in America's long path of freedom but derided by many at the time of its implementation.

As millions of Americans this holiday season have flocked to Steven Spielberg's stunning film "Lincoln," they have been reminded it was not the Emancipation Proclamation that abolished slavery in the United States, but rather the ratification of the 13th Amendment.

But the 13th Amendment would not have been possible were it not for the measures undertaken by the Emancipation Proclamation, a wartime executive order granting unconditional freedom to slaves who resided in those areas of the country still in rebellion and employment within the Union armed forces to able-bodied freedmen.

There was much to question about the Emancipation Proclamation at the moment of its signing.

For those critical of Lincoln as ineffectual, the proclamation was criticized as a purely symbolic gesture because it only tried to free slaves in those areas where the United States had no meaningful influence.

For those seeking swift reconciliation with the Confederacy it seemed an unnecessary provocation because of how it could fan the flames of violent slave rebellion.

And for ardent abolitionists it did not go far enough because it didn't address the practice of slavery in the Union slave states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri and specifically exempted regions of the South under Federal control.

But the order allowed for immediate emancipation of slaves held by Northern troops as contraband of war. Inasmuch as slaves continued to bolster production in the South, the rapid word-of-mouth news of the proclamation disrupted the Southern economy as slaves saw genuine hope for their own freedom from a Union victory. It provided an efficient means for fresh recruits into the Union armed forces. And it eviscerated French and British support of the Confederacy.

Appreciate freedom of worship — MP

by Philip Kiew, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on January 2, 2013, Wednesday

LAWAS: Freedom of worship in Malaysia is precious and should be appreciated by all communities.

Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong said this when officiating at the earth-breaking ceremony of Methodist Church Indigenous Students Welfare Centre and Sarawak Annual Coronation Conference (SCAC) led by Rev Dato Dr Su Chii An in Lawas recently.

This is in contrast to countries which do not allow places of worship of non-official religions to be built, he said.

Henry said religious teachings inculcated good moral values, and urged Christians in the district to continue upholding inter-racial and inter-religious harmony.

We appreciate the fair leadership in Lawas which do not oppress other religions, he said.

The Lawas MP said cooperation between Christians and non-Christians contributed towards a harmonious society under the BN government.

He warned against any form of extremism caused by fanatical sects hiding behind the cloak of religion to justify wrongdoings.

Freedom Laser Therapy Releases the 10 Most Common Reasons Smokers Fail at Quitting

Secrets from Breaking Nicotine Addiction

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 31, 2012

Freedom Laser Therapy is announcing the release of the 10 Most Common Reasons Why Smokers Fail at Quitting to help people who are making quitting smoking their New Year's Resolution. Smokers who desire to quit can also watch powerful anti smoking videos online at http://www.freedomquitsmoking.com to educate them about their nicotine addiction. Nabat says, "In Freedom's effort to help people quit smoking nationwide, we are now offering a 14 day free trial to anyone interested in trying the new Freedom Quit Smoking System, they'll just need to pay processing and handling. Contact Freedom directly through freedomquitsmoking.com to inquire about this free trial offer."

10 Most Common Reasons Why Smokers Fail at Quitting

1) Peer pressure or negative influence from other smokers.

2) Believing that smoking just one cigarette again can ever be an option for the smoker today or in the future.

3) Envying smokers, instead of pitying them. Don't envy nicotine addicts.

4) Thinking a cigarette is a go-to when something bad occurs in life.

5) The former smoker feeling each day they are sacrificing something monumental when quitting smoking. Smokers should look at quitting smoking as if they are regaining health, peace of mind, freedom, cleanliness and saving money.

6) Thinking that smoking cigarettes is a coping mechanism for a stressful situation; on the contrary, it only makes a person a slave to nicotine all over again. Smoking blocks the arteries and veins from receiving more oxygen causing more stress throughout the body.

Watch Night services to celebrate New Year, freedom from slavery

The Rev. Mark Whitlock will be donning a tuxedo Monday night for a joyful New Years Eve celebration, ringing in 2013 from the pulpit of his Orange County church.

For many African American Christians, such as Whitlock, New Years Eve is a time to gather in Watch Night services commemorating their ancestors vigil150 years ago over whether President Lincoln would sign the Emancipation Proclamation. Because Lincoln did sign it on Jan. 1, 1863, declaring all slaves in confederate states forever free, the evening became a time of prayer, song, dance and celebration, Whitlock said.

For us, its about the birth of freedom in 1863, said Whitlock, pastor of Christ Our Redeemer Church, an African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Irvine. And in 2013, we shall seek freedom from oppression and inner conflicts.

The pastor of the 2,800-member congregation said festivities would start at 9 p.m. with dinner, followed by a 10 p.m. worship service featuring gospel music and an 11:30 p.m. sermon. Putting a modern twist on the freedom message, congregants will share stories of their liberation this year from alcoholism, drug abuse, poverty, poor health and other crippling conditions, Whitlock said.

Congregants will dramatize watchmen awaiting news over Lincolns decision, then break into celebration at the stroke of midnight. The church is at 46 Maxwell in Irvine.

A 10 p.m. service is also scheduled at the cathedral of West Angeles Church of God in Christ, 3600 Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Watch Night services will also be held in the United Methodist Church, whose co-founder, John Wesley, first popularized them in the 18th century. Bishop Minerva G. Carcao of the denominations Los Angeles Episcopal area, said Wesley began the Watch Nights as an opportunity to renew congregants covenant with God for the new year.

Wesley had a deep sense that we have come this far by the grace of God and the only appropriate response is to recommit our lives to God, she said.

Several Methodist congregations have scheduled Watch Nights, including a 7 p.m. service at Claremont United Methodist Church, 211 West Foothill Blvd. In the Episcopal denomination, a 7:30 p.m. service is scheduled at All Saints Church, 132 N. Euclid Avenue in Pasadena.

Looking forward: The fight for Internet freedom

INTERNET FREEDOM. Take a look at the past, present, and future of Internet freedom.

Editor's Note: This is the first of a 3-part piece on Internet freedom and the future ahead.

MANILA, Philippines - While 2012 was a year where the Filipino people had to band together to stop a cybercrime law, 2013 may very well be the year for the world to maintain a vigil for their rights on the Internet.

To look forward, let's take a quick look back at some points where the future of the Internet was in jeopardy, and then see what 2013 might hold for the fate of the worldwide web.

2011 and the Internet

2011 saw the introduction of some major legislation in other parts of the world. In the United States, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) were there to give Internet users a headache. Both sought to stop copyright infringement online, but the implementation seemed prone for abuses and reduced the potential freedom of expression of people in the US and outside it.

Both SOPA and PIPA faced a significant backlash from users worldwide, with protests against SOPA and PIPA culminating in what was called American Censorship Day on November 16, 2011. The two are basically stalled, though those opposing the SOPA and PIPA are working to kill the acts entirely.

INTERNET REGULATION. SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA were all part of 2011's developing rhetoric on Internet freedoms.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), while drafted in 2010, was formally published in 2011. This multinational treaty was made to create international standards for enforcing intellectual property rights, including things like digital piracy.

This particular agreement shares some of the same issues that SOPA and PIPA had, namely issues with freedom of expression and privacy rights, and is perhaps even more secretive in the way it was held than SOPA and PIPA. Despite this, however, Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States have signed the agreement in 2011, with more signing in 2012.

Rousey vs. Cyborg: Dana White Says Dolce Diet Can Get Cyborg Down to 135 Pounds

Famed MMA nutritionist Mike Dolce might be just the man that UFC president Dana White needs in order to seal the deal on a superfight between Ronda Rousey and Cristiane Justino.

Right now, the only thing preventing a match between the two former Strikeforce women's champions is a difference in weight.

But while Cris "Cyborg" insists that there's no way that she can cut 10 pounds to challenge for Rousey's UFC women's bantamweight title belt, White tells TATAMEthat Dolce's patented system can get the featherweight bruiser to safely and efficiently cut down to 135 pounds (translation via Google):

"She can get to this weight, we have an expert who can help you lose weight in a healthy way, [he] does so with all our athletes. We have Mike Dolce, who has the system to [get] wrestlers [to] lose weight and still feel good, and it's all about your diet. He is 100% ready to work with her and [it] will not cost anything to Cris," said Dana, who has even [compared] the Cyborg x Ronda [rivalry to] boxers Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

Bloody Elbow followed up with Dolce himself, who stated that not only would the weight cut be possible, but that he could also get Cyborg down to 135 pounds with very little difficulty:

It is absolutely possible for her to make 135. I believe 135 will be her best weight class. I think she's a legitimate 135 pounder. I think as good as she was at 145, she'll be even more dynamic at 135. I believe it wouldn't be that difficult at all.

Dolce also told Bloody Elbowthat Cyborg would actually be better suited fighting at the bantamweight limit and would be an "amazing" competitor at that weight. Even while competing at 145 pounds, Cyborg racked up an impressive 11-fight winning streak.

However, Justino's career was put on hold due to a one-year suspension after testing positive for anabolic steroids in January 2012.Regardless of Cyborg's schedule, Rousey will still make her first UFC title defense against top-ranked challenger Liz Carmouche at UFC 157.

If Rousey walks out of her first UFC main event as the champion, it's highly possible that Cyborg will be next in line to fight for the women's bantamweight title at a future UFC pay-per-view.

Both women have spent over a year trading heated words, with Rousey famously tellingTSN Radio's The MMA Report with John Pollock that she didn't care if Cyborg was injecting "horse semen" into her eyes, but her foe simply needed to "stop doping" in order to successfully cut to 135 pounds.

Beaches closed as shark refuses to be herded off

Hunt for the shark ... lifesavers patrol Dee Why beach. Photo: Mackenzie Price

SEARCH and rescue teams will scour the northern beaches again after a 2.5-metre shark closed two popular swimming spots.

In the second brush with a shark on a NSW beach in the past three days, an off-duty Warringah Council lifeguard, Danny Sheather, was knocked off his board while surfing at Dee Why about 12.45pm on Sunday.

Mr Sheather did not see what hit him but noticed a 30-centimetre chunk out of the bottom of his board when he returned to shore.

''It looked like something had come up and rammed him from underneath,'' Steve Downman, a Warringah Council lifeguard supervisor, said. Dee Why and Long Reef beaches were immediately closed.

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter soon spotted a 2.5-metre white shark at the south end of Dee Why.

Despite lifesavers' efforts it could not be moved on, so both beaches remained closed all afternoon.

''The boat attempted to shepherd the shark away from shallow water,'' Stephen Leahy, the chief executive of the helicopter service, said. ''It wasn't deterred whatsoever, which is unusual.''
