Dr. Clifford E. Felder

REHOVOT, ISRAEL Dr. Clifford E. (Chaim Tzvi) Felder, 59, died after a brief illness in Rehovot, Israel where he has lived since 1981. He was a Research Associate in Theoretical Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Dr. Felder, born in Fall River, MA., was an honors graduate of Duke University, received an MS from Brandeis University and a PhD in Theoretical Biochemistry from Iowa State University. At Weizmann, Dr. Felder has been an integral member of two teams of scientists exploring the molecular modeling of proteins, drugs and other organic/organometallic compounds. Among his numerous publications and accomplishments, he wrote a server that calculates dipole moments of proteins.

In addition to many accomplishments, Dr. Felder faced challenges in his life with a special sweetness and strength that inspired many. He loved playing the piano. He was devoted member of his Religious community where he participated in study of Torah and lived his life in fulfillment of its highest ideals.

He was the son of Louise Felder currently of Providence, RI and the late David E. Felder. He is also survived by his brother Fred of Providence, RI, and his brother Lloyd and his sister-in-law Deborah of Dartmouth, MA. He is also survived by his niece Laura, a medical student at Georgetown, and his nephew Daniel, a financial analyst in NYC.

Memorial Shiva week continues through Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., excluding the Sabbath, at his brother Fred's residence at 30 Miles Ave., Providence and will conclude at his mother's residence at EPOCH on Butler Ave., in Providence, RI.

Phila students head to Calif. astronomy conference

Four students from New Philadelphia High School and their teacher will be attending the meeting of the American Astronomical Society to detail their part in a project to identify previously unknown stars.

Journeying to Long Beach, Calif., for the session which runs Sunday through Jan. 11 are Casey Miller, a sophomore; Heath Scherick, a junior; Brandon Free, a senior; and Taylor Willis, a senior.

Accompanying them is Debbie French, a physics and engineering teacher at the high school.

More than 600 professional astronomers also will be in attendance.

French said that her students will be busy the entire time because of the large number of programs being offered, including at least one by a Nobel laureate.

Its going to be absolutely crazy, she said.

Among the better-known individuals scheduled to attend is Bobak Ferdowsi, flight director on the Mars Sciences

Laboratory Curiosity mission this past summer who became an Internet sensation because of his distinctive Mohawk haircut.

Hes kind of a big deal right now, Miller said.

The meeting will allow the students to learn about jobs in astronomy, as well as look for potential summer internships. Its very practical for them to go, French said.
