Auspicious dishes for wealth and longevity

Yu Sheng Salad

By Winnie Velasquez, VERA Files

As dragon and lion dancers usher in the Year of the Water Snake at around three in the afternoon Sunday, Feb 10, families and friends will gather to wish one another wealth, longevity, happiness and prosperity. And as cries of Gong Xi Fa Ca! rend the air, rituals steeped in centuries-old tradition will be observed around the city.

And food is the focal point of these ceremonies marking the start of the Lunar New Year also the onset of the Spring Festival. This celebratory feast of dishes deemed auspicious is shared to invoke blessings of good fortune, longevity, and good health on everyone who partake of it.

At Xin Tian Di, Crown Plaza Manila Gallerias premier Chinese restaurant, Sam Lee, its executive Chinese chef has prepared eight essential auspicious dishes that will be rotated alongside the regular items on the menu until February 24. Among these are the Yu Sheng Salad, Braised African Abalone with Broccoli in Oyster Sauce, Tiger Prawns, Whole Fish, Braised Patatim with Sea Moss, Dried Scallop, Assorted Meat with Rice in Lotus Leaf, Dried Scallop, Dried Oyster, Nian Gao, Steamed Seafood dumpling with Sharks Fin in Superior Stock, Sauteed Prawn Balls with XO Sauce, Deep Fried Crispy Tikoy, and Chocolate Buchi.

A Singaporean Chinese, Chef Lee says that the menu at Xin Tian Di is a fusion of East and West but done in the Chinese way. Every year there is a standard dish in the Chinese New Year menu, the Yu Sheng Salad. Literally meaning raw fish, yusheng sounds like the Chinese word that means an increase in abundance. The Chinese living in Singapore and Malaysia love to eat this during the Chinese New Year because it is a symbol of abundance, prosperity, and good fortune.

Chef Sam LeeThe Yu Sheng Salad is an Asian-style salad with various shredded vegetables and served with assorted toppings, a sweet plum sauce and slices of raw fish (usually salmon sashimi or mackerel). Each ingredient added is carefully chosen because there is a corresponding auspicious greeting with it.

Ingredients of the Yu Sheng salad consists of red items: carrot, red yam and red ginger; green items: cucumber and greem yam; white radish or daikon; pok chui crackers; pomelo; cinnamon powder; Chinese five-spice powder; plim sauce; crushed roasted peanuts; roasted sesame seeds; olive oil; white pepper powder; raw fish slices; and abalone slices.

There is a ritual that accompanies the Yu Sheng Salad, Chef Sam explains. An appetizer to raise good luck for the New Year, the ceremony known as lo hei or tossing the salad, it calls for all diners to gather in a circle and say a Chinese greeting when the salad is put on the table. This is followed by an auspicious greeting for each ingredient. The shredded ingredients are mixed together then diners take their chopsticks and toss the salad into the air while saying out loud their auspicious wishes to signal the start of a prosperous New Year. The higher the ingredients are tossed, the better to have those wishes granted, the chef adds.

Chef Sam says that for the Year of the Water Snake, he has prepared for diners at Xin Tian Di special dishes that will make their celebration meaningful and give them a different culinary adventure. He cites among these the Assorted Meat with Rice in Lotus Leaf. To lovers of Chinese food this is the familiar machang that is a staple is many Chinese and delis but Chef Sam gives it a festive twist. The assorted meats for this dish liver sausage, Chinese sausage, and preserved pork are all ordered from a regular supplier in Hong Kong. This way, we can be sure that the dish is nhas just the right blend of flavors. It is believed that combining these three will bring good luck and the family will stay together through several generations, he says.

myMEDholiday.com Adds Holistic and Alternative Treatment Centers to its Catalogue of Specialists

Medical tourism portal myMEDholiday.com, which offers patients an array of information and services pertaining to medical travel, has expanded its robust listing of healthcare providers with the recent inclusion of clinics that do Holistic and Alternative treatments.

Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) February 09, 2013

Holistic and alternative centers provide treatment with the same goals as traditional hospitals and clinics, namely, to create a relaxed environment for those who are delivering care, to assure safety and reduce stress for patients, and to improve overall quality of health. This approach is conducive to maintaining the atmosphere needed for some of the more popular CAM therapies like Yoga, Ayurveda, acupuncture, naturopathy, and many others.

myMEDholiday.com features a wealth of information on many of these alternatives, in particular medical and wellness spas. Spa treatments have been incorporated into medical and wellness facilities because they help the body rejuvenate and overcome stress, and they emphasize a key tenet to CAM, which is the linking of body, mind, and spirit. And, unlike conventional hospitals, a symptoms-based approach is de-emphasized in favor of holistic care.

A marketing spokesperson for the company says, The addition of holistic and alternative treatment centers is important because we can now offer our customers access to an entirely different subset of the healthcare community. It is another value-add for the site and one we are excited about developing.

While myMEDholiday.com aims to cover all areas of medicine, including CAM, the portal remains a fixture for medical tourists considering traditional treatments in areas like Neurology, Orthopedics, and cancer treatment surgery.

Legal loopholes fuel growth of steroid clinics in South Florida

Anthony Boschs clinic, now the focus of a widening steroid investigation, was hidden in plain sight, next to a bank in an office complex on South Dixie Highway across from the University of Miami. Yet it was beyond the reach of state health regulators.

The clinic, BioGenesis of America, fell into a gray area of Florida healthcare law that has allowed many anti-aging or rejuvenation clinics to proliferate across the state with little government oversight.

Exploiting the same legal loopholes that made South Florida the top source of black-market prescription painkillers, these clinics have helped make the region one of the top markets in the United States for illegal steroids and growth hormones feeding potentially dangerous medications not just to athletes and bodybuilders, but also to aging men hoping to fend off Father Time.

How these anti-aging clinics are getting by the law is beyond me, said Dr. Gary Wadler, a New York physician who works with the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Bosch is now under criminal investigation from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration over allegations that he supplied steroids and human growth hormones to several Major League Baseball players, including New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez. Boschs ties to the ballplayers were first reported by the Miami New Times, which received copies of what the newspaper says are Boschs handwritten ledgers from his Coral Gables clinic, which opened last March but now sits vacant.

In 2009, the DEA also investigated whether Bosch supplied banned substances to All-Star Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers. No charges were filed. Bosch, 49, could not be reached for comment, and his lawyer did not return messages.

While Boschs name may be familiar to the DEA or baseballs doping investigators, hes an unknown to Florida health regulators.

Bosch is suspected of prescribing and administering medications, yet he is not a doctor or licensed healthcare professional regulated by the states Department of Health. The Health Department does investigate people suspected of prescribing drugs without a license, but the department would not say whether Bosch was the target of an investigation.

Bosch is described as Dr. in papers filed in 2009 for a now-defunct corporation, state records show. He is listed as having a Ph.D. on the BioGenesis Facebook page.

Boschs clinic advertised as a spa on its Facebook page was also unregulated, state health officials said. Most medical clinics in Florida are monitored by the state Agency for Health Care Administration; however, AHCA only inspects clinics that accept insurance and many anti-aging clinics do not take insurance.

AoL to connect women with tech, spirituality

The International Women's Conference to be held in Bangalore from February 3-5 will deliberate on many issues pertaining to technology and human relationships

News |

As the stress rate goes up, recharge is no longer an exclusive technology word. And women, juggling between their homes and career, increasingly feel the need to connect to their inner net.

For them, spirituality beckons. In that perspective the Art of Living is connecting women with technology and spirituality through its International Women's Conference in Bangalore from February 3-5.

The meet aims to be a fascinating connect between spirituality and technology and creating awareness among tech-savvy women about relaxing and recharging their energies through spiritual practices like yoga and meditation.

"A technologically sound woman has a mind that is not lost to machines, but uses them effectively on her path towards her goal. A spiritually sound woman has a say over her mind in all matters. She is fully centered and established, and brings joy and peace on her path towards her goal," says Bhanu Narasimhan, chairperson of the conference.

That sums up the spirit of the fifth International Women's Conference titled 'Women and Technology'.

Sri Sri Sri Ravi Shankar strikes the right chordas he says, "Spirituality is the Technology of the Consciousness.

Over the three days the speakers will deliberate on many topics including how we can tap the source of creativity and sustain the capacity to innovate; positive and negative impact on technology and how the technology has changed human relationships.

Among others, the guest speakers' list includes Linda Amalia Sari Gumelar, minister for women empowerment and child protection Republic of Indonesia; Dr.Daggubati Purandeshwari, minister of state for human resource development (higher education), India; Ibu Zannua Arifah Chafsoh Rahman Wahid (Yenny Wahid), secretary general, the Awakening of Nation Party (PKB) and Presidential candidateand Bothaina Kamel, Egyptian Television Anchor Activist and politician. Over 4,373 underprivileged girl children have been educated since the first International Womens Conference was held in 2005.

Spirituality likened to personality development

My book is not just about my journey towards spiritual awakening, but it will also give hope and inspiration to every individual who reads it, said Michael Fischman, former president of the US Chapter of the Art of Living Foundation. He was in the city to launch his book 'Stumbling Into Infinity: An Ordinary Man in the Sphere of Enlightenment'.

The book is about Fischmans relationship with his guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar who helped him experience a life of greater truth and happiness. After taking an Art of Living course in 1988 in the US, I came to Sri Sris ashram in Bangalore and spent two years there. Later, I got associated with the organisation and have been travelling around the world for the last 20 years, he said.

In the book, he has narrated the early years of the organisation as well as the little-known facts of Sri Sri.

In the beginning, I was not a disciplined student as I had several emotional issues. After this course, my life changed for the good. My relationship with my family became stronger. My guru Sri Sri taught me that love is constant. He is the most compassionate human being I have ever known, added Fischman.

The book also busts several myths surrounding spirituality. Stating that spirituality is nothing but personal development and awareness, he said, Times have become demanding and the most challenging thing for a person is his interpersonal skills. Awareness and acceptance is the key.

VIDEO: Notre Dame grad, space station commander anticipates trip home

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Notre Dame grad Indiana native who's commanding the International Space Station said Thursday he's looking forward to a visit back home after he returns from his five months in orbit.

Astronaut KevinFord spoke via video hookup to the Indiana Senate in the Statehouse, where his older brother, David, was a state senator when he died of cancer in 2008.

Ford wore a blue shirt with a large Indiana flag emblem as he floated inside one of the space station's modules for the 20-minute conversation that was shown on a large video board above the Senate's rostrum. He spoke about the scientific work being done on the station during his stay as he took questions from senators and a couple of teenage family friends from his Blackford County hometown of Montpelier.

Ford demonstrated biting a solid bubble of juice that floated in front of him before seventh-grader Kelli Neff asked Ford what he wanted to do first after returning to Earth.

Ford drew laughs when he exclaimed he wanted a shower "because I haven't had a shower in 107 days."

The 52-year-old Ford flew to the space station in October with two Russians aboard a Soyuz that lifted off from Kazakhstan. He's scheduled to be at the station until March.

State Senate leaders invited schools around Indiana watch the conversation with Ford that was streamed over the Senate's website.

Ford said he didn't see himself becoming an astronaut while he was a student at Blackford High School but always wanted to be a pilot. That led him to study aeronautical engineering at the University of Notre Dame and join the Air Force.

Space Jam: Astronaut Sings Duet From the Space Station

Want to stay on top of all the space news? Follow @universetoday on Twitter

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield participated in an annual event for Canadian music students from a unique location: a long-distance perch in the Cupola of the International Space Station. Before launching to the ISS in December, Hadfield wrote a song with Ed Robertson of the band Barenaked Ladies, and Friday morning the song premiered as Hadfield, Robertson and a school glee club sang together: Hadfield performed his part on the space station; Robertson did his in Toronto with the Wexford Gleeks. The song was part of Music Monday in Canada, and while todays premiere was pre-recorded, in May, students across Canada will play the song live with Hadfield in space. The song is called I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing), it begins with the words:

Eighteen-thousand miles an hour Fueled by science and solar power The oceans racing past At half a thousand tons Ninety minutes moon to sun A bullet cant go half this fast.

Music aficionados can find the sheet music here and here.

Chris Hadfield in the Cupola of the ISS. Credit: NASA

Hadfield plays the guitar and sings with a couple of bands on Earth. Before he began his Expedition on the ISS, he told Universe Today he would be doing as much singing as he could in space.

Music is really important to me, ever since Ive been a kid. Ive always played guitar and sang, he said, and Im really hoping to have the chance to sit weightless with the guitar on board and play music, and also record some of the music Ive written.

He also is working to finish some songs he started writing on Earth while living on the ISS, which he called a particularly inspirational environment and maybe write some news ones.

We have all the recording equipment we need on board, he said. It is basic but it is good enough to be able to record and Im hoping to record at least one full CDs worth of original music up there. Its neat Im writing with my brother who is a musician, and he pointed out that a lot of the traditional folk songs came from people who were the first on the frontier the early explorers, sailors, miners, and the fishermen and the people who are involved in the day-to-day of a specific human experience. To think I might be involved in helping to write some of the first space faring music, music that people will play and sing as they leave Earth for Mars, it is interesting, it is a time in history.

This isnt the first Earth-Space musical collaboration: in 2011 astronaut Cady Coleman did a flute duet with Jethro Tulls Ian Anderson.
