Cris Cyborg Asks for Release from UFC, Abandons Ronda Rousey Superfight

After several arguments about weight divisions and tuneup matches, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos is taking her ball and asking to go home.

That's the latest development in negotiations for a once-potential UFC superfight between Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg, according to a recent episode of Inside MMAon AXS TV.

As relayed via Cyborg's manager, former UFC champion Tito Ortiz, the first (and only) Strikeforce women's featherweight champion is no longer interested in working for the UFC.

To that effect, she has reportedly asked for her early release from the promotion:

Right now, we're actually waiting for [the] UFC to release [Cyborg]. We asked for them to release her, so Dana White actually talked to me yesterday. They gave an offer, I went to Cyborg and she said she didn't want to do itand we just asked for her release.

Since [the UFC] isn't doing a 145-pound weight class, what else can they do? Now, she's going to be released. Maybe we'll go look somewhere else and you can see Cyborg crush another woman's face in.

Inside MMAhost Bas Rutten immediately inquired whether or not Invicta FCwould be a possible destination for Cyborg, as the all-female MMA promotion currently hosts a healthy featherweight division.

Ortiz noted that the UFC's intent was to offer Cyborg a "huge deal," but she specifically wanted a three-fight deal with a fourth fight against Rousey at a 140-pound catchweight.

However, UFC president Dana White had previously stated that match would only happen at 135 poundsrequiring a weight drop that Ortiz says would permanently harm Cyborg's health.

Cris Cyborg Asks UFC for Release from Contract

Everybody wants to see former Strikeforce champions Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg Santos fight, but as the days dwindle on, it looks less and less likely that its ever going to happen.

Things have devolved to the point that UFC Hall of Famer and current Cyborg manager Tito Ortiz on Friday night told Inside MMA that his client has asked to be released from her contract.

Cyborg was one of the fighters under contract with Zuffa, LLC when the UFC assimilated the Strikeforce roster. Zuffa, LLC is the parent company of both promotions, so Cyborgs contract carried over to the UFC.

The problem is, Cyborg was the 145-pound champion and often struggled to make weight in that division. Rousey is the UFCs first 135-pound womens champion and neither she nor the UFC appear to want her to fight outside of that class anytime soon.

Cyborg, according to Ortiz, is willing to do the fight, but only at a catchweight of 140 pounds.

The UFC seems unwilling to do that, at least not yet. Cyborg is unhappy with the UFCs alternative offer, which Ortiz said includes the possibility of her remaining under contract, but then fighting for Invicta FC, the burgeoning all-womens mixed martial arts promotion.

UFC wanted to sign a huge deal with Cris Cyborg, but they wanted to stick her over in Invicta. It didnt make sense to me, said Ortiz on Inside MMA.

I talked to Cyborg time and time again, asked her and asked her. She said I would love to do a three-fight deal; fourth fight would be against Ronda. Lets get it done at 140, not be a fight for the 135-pound championship, he continued.

For her to get down to 135 pounds is physically impossible, for a woman. For a man its different because we have more water weight to take off. For Cris Cyborg to get down to that weight, shes going to be three to four percent bodyfat.

Ive talked to her. She wants to start a family later on; she wants to have kids. Family is what its truly about.

Diver dies off Sydney's northern beaches

A CLOSE-KNIT scuba diving community is in mourning after the death of one of its members during a "technical dive" off Sydney's northern beaches.

The 41-year-old man was pulled unconscious from the water at 8.30am (AEDT) on Saturday after getting into difficulty at a depth of about 60 metres at a wreck off Barrenjoey Headland.

He was put on board a Broken Bay Water Police vessel, where he was treated by a doctor and paramedic who were lowered from a rescue helicopter.

However, the man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sergeant Malcolm Jeffs, from the Police Diving Unit, says the man was with a group of seven other technical divers, who were devastated by the accident.

"The technical diving community is fairly close. I'm not sure how well they knew the person, but it's a very upsetting situation for all those involved," Sergeant Jeffs told reporters.

He said the group had been offered counselling services and were still being interviewed by police.

Technical diving uses mixed gas combinations, which vary according to the depth of descent.

Sergeant Jeffs said the man's diving buddy conveyed him to the surface immediately after noticing he was in difficulty.

"Treatment appears to have been given as fast as possible. There's no indication that there was any delay in treatment or response to his situation."

People walked along Hampton Beach Friday morning with an energetic dog getting some excercise before the big snow storm hits big on the coast.Deb Cram/dcram@seacoastonline.com

HAMPTON The New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation closed all state beaches at about 1 p.m. Friday and they will remain closed until Sunday morning.

Local police have plans in place to deal with flooding that may occur as winter storm Nemo hits the Seacoast.

"They're calling for blizzard conditions with winds up to 70 mph," said Amy Bassett of Parks and Recreation. "This is one of those instances that we feel it's important (to close the beaches) because of what potentially can happen."

Hampton Police Chief Jamie Sullivan said police don't plan on going to the beach to remove people, but they can use the official closure as a "tool" to warn beachgoers with their public address system.

"They're not going to be able to police as much as they want," Bassett said. "If they see people out there (at the beach), they can tell people it's closed and that gives them ability to ask them to get off the beach."

That includes surfers, who may be interested in taking advantage of an extremely high tide. Hampton Police Lt. Dan Gidley said there will be a high tide of 10 feet expected for 10:08 a.m. Saturday and another 9.2-foot tide at 10:45 p.m. There will be "tidal surges" due to the nor'easter effect that could increase those tides by 1 to 3 feet, he said.

"We close (the beaches) when there's a storm of this intensity and it happens to match up with high tide and a full moon," Bassett said, noting the last closure was during Hurricane Sandy in October.

Top Nutrition Trends of 2013

Sure, well all still be talking about gluten-free in the coming year, but there are plenty of exciting new nutrition trends, too. Check out our list and get a jumpstart on healthy eating the 2013 way.

Cauliflower and mini greens: Move over, kale. One of the hot nutrition trends in the veggie category this year is expected to be cauliflower. Like the curly green, its versatile and packed with nutrients: One cup has nearly 90 percent of your recommended daily value of vitamin C. Cauliflower has been a staple lately on the menus of NYCs fabulous restaurants, says registered dietitian Laura Cipullo, owner of Laura Cipullo Whole Nutrition Services in New York, whos sampled broccolis cousin mashed, curried and caramelized. I personally love to coat an entire head of cauliflower with Dijon mustard, nonfat plain Greek yogurt or canola oil mayonnaise and bake it for an hour.

If youre specifically looking for a trendy new green, check out tiny leafies like baby romaine, mini bok choy and microgreens, which are increasing in popularity, says registered dietitan Julieanna Hever, host of Veria Living TVs "What Would Julieanna Do?"Enjoy them as you would other mixed lettuce varieties or in smoothies, stir-fries, and grain or pasta dishes.

Veggie-centered meals: Speaking of vegetables, dont be surprised to see them moving to center stage more often, as an increasing number of Americans adopt at least a flexatarian approach to their diet, enjoying more meatless meals.

2013 is predicted to be the year of the plant-based diet, and stores are reflecting the interest, Hever says. Im seeing more faux meat and dairy products, as well as bigger raw food sections in the market.

Restaurant industry forecaster Techtomic also predicts that chefs will step up to the plate to embrace this nutrition trend with more meatless mealsparticularly seasonal or exotic vegetable plates. But consumers should be careful not to assume those are the healthiest meals on the menu.

I think it will be an eye-opening experience when restaurants all start posting calorie countssome vegan meals are no healthier than a burger! says Biggest Loser nutritionist Rachel Beller, a registered dietitian and author of Eat to Lose, Eat to Win: Your Grab-N-Go Action Plan for a Slimmer, Healthier You. You still need to watch the calories and fat.

Bulgur: Burned out on quinoa? Try bulgur, the Middle Eastern grain predicted to be one of the top nutrition trends in 2013. I think were going to see a lot of bulgur for breakfast, Beller says. A cup cooked is about 150 calories, just like oatmeal, but fiber-wise, it has double the amount. Try it with almond milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon, she suggests. But beware: unlike quinoa, this grain does contain wheat, which rules it out for gluten-free diets.
