Because of the location of these ligaments an athlete will often complain of pain in the front of the lower leg. There is minimal swelling associated with a high ankle sprain. The name High ankle sprain is a misnomer because the injury occurs just above area that most of us think of as the ankle. In the evaluation of high ankle sprain the treating physician may find increased tenderness when they squeeze the tibia and fibula together. These injuries can vary in severity and severe high ankle sprains may require surgery to create stability between the Fibula and Tibia. If you suspect that you have a high ankle sprain, you should decrease your Physical activity until you are evaluated by a Physician who is comfortable and knowledgeable in the treatment of this type of injury.

When a patient has been diagnosed with concussion the treatment usually consists of rest for the brain from both cognitive and physical stress. The brain suffers an injury on the cellular level during concussion and this injury heals through the normalization of the electrolyte balance in the brain environment. This process takes energy which occurs through both aerobic and anaerobic functions. If the brain is stressed during the recovery period it can lead to worsening symptoms for the patient as stress on the brain requires energy that is being used to heal the cells that were injured. When treating a patient the first and most important aspect of treatment is physical rest. A player should stop all training until they are symptom free. This rest also includes cognitive rest. This aspect is often more difficult than physical rest because most athletes are students. We ask students to limit time on computers because eye strain can worsen headaches associated with concussion. In addition, we ask teachers to limit the volume of schoolwork and ask that testing is avoided whenever possible. By allowing the brain to have an environment of physical and cognitive rest, the majority of concussion symptoms will resolve and greater than 80% of athletes will be at their baseline in just two weeks.

Concussion occurs after a head injury and the symptoms most often involve headache, "foggy" type feeling, loss of balance, and emotional ability. If a player has been injured and complains of concussion type symptoms, they should be watched very closely and should not be left alone over the first few hours following the injury. If the player has persistent vomiting, a headache that is getting worse, or if they have difficulty with vision or any abnormality in their ability to walk or communicate then they should be taken to an appropriate Emergency Center immediately. Players who suffer from a concussion should not return to play until they have been evaluated by a Physician. The physician will take a history of the incident and the patients symptoms. They will also test the patients balance, coordination, and memory. At the AllSports medicine concussion clinic we use ImPACT testing which is a computerized neuro-cognitive test that helps by providing objective data which helps us further evaluate a concussed athletes injury. Severs disease is a condition that causes pain in an athletes #39; heels. This is a condition that we commonly manage in the All Children #39;s Sports Medicine clinic as it often occurs in the growing athlete who is 7-15 years of age. The pain associated with Sever #39;s disease is located at the area where the Achilles tendon inserts into the calcaneous or heel bone. With the start of a new exercise routine or an increase in training intensity, inflammation can occur as the strong Achilles tendon repeatedly pulls against the athlete #39;s heel. A young athlete may complain of increase pain in this are upon waking up in the morning and the pattern of pain will also increase during vigorous activity. You may notice mild swelling at the back of the heel and the area is often sensitive to touch. The repeated microtrauma caused by the tight achilles tendon pulling of the calcaneous (or heel bone) can be decreased by icing the affected area immediately following activity. A stretching regimen should be initiated to increase flexibility in the calf muscles as well. The best chance a player has for recovery would include a period of rest for 1 -2 weeks away from intense physical activity which caused the inflammation. If you think that your child has Sever #39;s disease they should be seen by a Physician who is comfortable with diagnoses and evaluation of this condition.

Myositis Ossificans is a reaction to a bruise in a muscle that has been injured. During the healing of the bruise, Calcium can become deposited in the bruise causing a hard bone like structure within the muscle. The exact reason why this happens is unclear but it is known to happen more often in athletes with repetitive trauma to the same area before the bruised muscle has appropriate time to heal. This condition occurs most commonly in contact sports and is most commonly seen in the Quadriceps muscle of the thigh and the area of the upper arm This condition presents as a hard and painful area located at the site of a bruise which has been healing for 2-4 weeks. In most athletes, if the area is allowed to heal appropriately this calcification or bone formation will resorb and go away on its own. Evaluation of this condition includes getting X-rays to monitor the progression of the calcium formation. The most important aspects of therapy are avoidance of further trauma in the area affected and Physical therapy to maintain motion in the affected extremity. Turf toe is an injury to the great or big toe that commonly occurs in athletes playing field sports but this can also occur in martial arts. The term comes from the idea that this injury is seen with significant frequency in Football players who play on artificial turf. Any sport that requires the athlete to push off against a hard surface can lead to turf toe. The injury happen when an athletes is moving forward and hyper-extends the great toe. This motion causes strain of the ligaments under the toe leading to pain and inflammation. The pain gets worse with activity where the player needs to push off of the great toe. Diagnosis will usually include X-rays of the joint to make sure that the athlete does not have a fracture. If you have turf toe you can expect that the injury will require rest in order to heal. Once the inflammation has decreased the athlete will likely require bracing or taping in order to stabilize the great toe and subsequently decrease the risk of hyper-extending the toe in the future.

We commonly see this condition in athletes who play soccer or basketball and other sports that require sudden change of movement and jumping. Because knee pain can be caused by multiple different issues in this large joint, it is a good idea to have this condition evaluated by a Physician. After proper evaluation, the best treatment for a muscle strain is rest. When returning to competition it is important to warm up effectively and use ice after any strenuous exercise. Dr. Bruce E. Ellison MD evaluated Mr. GE, a patient presented in June with knee pain. Mr. GE could recall twisting the knee the previous Friday, and had been using a crutch to assist in ambulation since that time. Mr. GEhad not been able to fully extend the knee. The knee pain reached 5/10 on pain scale at its worst. The pain typically increased with significant ambulation or activity. There was increased pain with certain twisting maneuvers of the leg. MRI of his right knee revealed questionable medial meniscus increased signal. After minimal improvement with conservative treatment and topical anti-inflammatory, Dr. Bruce E. Ellison performed a knee arthroscopy. Meniscus fragments were removed and the patient returned to normal function. A few days following surgery, Mr. GE noted that he no longer had the sharp knee pain that he had prior to surgery.

Gay rights activists are demanding Tim Tebow back out of a speaking engagement at Liberty University just two weeks after pressuring the New York Jets quarterback to cancel a speaking engagement at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Tebow is expected to speak this weekend at Wildfire a mens conference hosted by the conservative Christian university. His remarks will be closed to the general public.
The professional football player is well-known for sharing his faith in Christ but in recent weeks hes come under fire from the national media and gay rights activists for speaking in churches that follow biblical teaching.
Huffington Post called Liberty a notoriously conservative private college with an anti-gay reputation. And more than 10,000 people have signed a petition launched by Faithful America calling on the quarterback to cancel his speech.
Liberty University isnt just another conservative Christian college, the group stated. Its ground-zero for a global assault on the legal rights of gays and lesbians and a symbol of everything thats wrong with the religious right.
A Liberty University spokesman refused to comment.
Faithful America said Tebow would give his Christian faith a bad name by speaking at the university founded by the late Jerry Falwell.
Several weeks ago Tebow canceled a speaking engagement at the First Baptist Church of Dallas citing new information he had received.

Liberty High School vandalized with graffiti
The Liberty High School athletic complex and multiple school buses were vandalized between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Photo by Kaitlin Pennell.
Frisco ISD's Liberty High School was vandalized between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning with profane writing and pictures of genitalia drawn in spray paint.
The graffiti messages implicated students from Frisco ISD's Heritage and Centennial high schools, as the schools' names were written. The graffiti also referenced the three schools' sports rivalries.
The athletic complex of Liberty High School was the sole building vandalized. Several doors of the complex and at least two school buses used for Liberty's sports teams were vandalized in the incident.
Liberty, Heritage and Centennial have traditionally enjoyed a friendly sports rivalry because of their close proximity -- the three schools are each located within a five-mile radius. Recently, however, the rivalry has "gone bad," one Frisco ISD student said.
The incident took place in the middle of the night, and cameras at Liberty videotaped the entire event and documented the time.
Sgt. Brad Merritt of the Frisco Police Department said investigators are "following promising leads."
Shana Wortham, the school district's executive director of communications, issued the following statement in response to the incident: "We are disappointed in the destruction of school property and we take this type of activity seriously; we will seek full restitution. We appreciate the quick work of the police department in conjunction with school and security personnel in this matter."
Wortham said the graffiti has been removed from the athletic complex but noted some new painting will be required. Cost estimates are currently being gathered so they can be used as restitution in any potential charges.

Liberty Interactive Announces Final Redemption Payment on 3.25% Senior Exchangeable Debentures Due 2031
ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Liberty Interactive LLC (Liberty), a subsidiary of Liberty Interactive Corporation (NASDAQ: LINTA/LINTB and LVNTA/LVNTB), announced the final redemption payment to the holders of its outstanding 3.25% Senior Exchangeable Debentures due 2031. Liberty previously announced that it would redeem the debentures in full on March 8, 2013. The debentures are attributed to the Liberty Ventures tracking stock group.
In connection with the redemption, Liberty elected to terminate the right of debenture holders, effective January 25, 2013, to exchange their debentures for the exchange market value of the reference shares attributable to the debentures. The reference shares attributable to each debenture consist of 9.2833 shares of Viacom class B common stock and 9.2833 shares of CBS Corporation common stock.
The redemption price for each outstanding debenture will be paid in cash, and equals the sum of (1) the adjusted principal amount of a debenture as of the redemption date, (2) accrued and unpaid interest on such debenture to but not including the redemption date and (3) any final period distribution on such debenture. Each debenture holder has received a notice providing the details of the redemption through the facilities of the Depositary Trust Company. The final amount to be paid per bond is as follows:
After the redemption, the company will have utilized $423.5 million of cash during the first quarter for the retirement of these debentures.

Dining hall manager DeZarn announces Libertarian candidacy for 14th district state senator
Senior Operations Manager for Butler/Wilson Dining Services Donald DeZarn has announced that he will run as the Libertarian candidate in Novembers election for state senator of the 14th Legislative District of New Jersey. While his platform includes advocacy for small businesses and free enterprise, he said he also hopes to initiate a dialogue on what he calls sensitive issues by openly supporting gay marriage and the legalization of marijuana.
Because the New Jersey Libertarian Party does not conduct a primary election, DeZarn will automatically be nominated at a statewide Libertarian convention on March 16. He will run against the incumbent Democratic Senator Linda Greenstein. The Republican Party has not yet announced any candidates.
The 2013 run for state senator will be DeZarns first political campaign. He has been employed by Dining Services for the past 17 years, although he took a yearlong military leave in 2005 to serve in the Iraq War.
DeZarn became interested in pursuing a political campaign after waking up one morning and asking himself, What happened to my country that I love? DeZarn explained that he was inspired to run for office after hearing about the financial struggles of both his neighbors in East Windsor and his colleagues in Dining Services. He added that he believes that both Democrats and Republicans today are limiting the free enterprise system.
It makes me sick to see our state give out subsidies while the mom-and-pop private businesses dont get that even playing field, he said. No one really has a plan to get us out of this mess.
DeZarn said that in addition to minimizing government regulation of small businesses, he intends to start a movement by generating conversations about marijuana legalization and the rights of gay men and women.
There are politicians in Trenton who agree with me on these issues, but theyre not willing to be the first to stand up for them for political reasons, DeZarn explained. But Im not a politician, so I have nothing to lose.
In particular, DeZarn noted that he believes that marijuana could benefit many patients. He said that elderly individuals with chronic ailments should be able to access the drug.
DeZarn added that marijuana prohibition laws are racist, as he believes certain groups in the population are targeted more heavily than others.
Its not only young black males that use marijuana, he said.
