Indonesia Squeezes Freedom of Expression

BJ Habibie, rescuer of Indonesia's press

Post-Suharto reforms were dramatic but there is still a long way to go

Former Constitutional Court Chief Justice Mohammad Mahfud MD in a conference Saturday hailed Indonesia's free press, noting its importance in holding the judiciary and the government to account. "From legislative, government, and judiciary, only the press is successful. You can say that the press excessively opens up [a case] as wide as possible. The press is able to overcome oligarchy," said the popular legal expert and potential presidential candidate.

Indeed, the restoration of press freedom by then-president BJ Habibie following the 1998 ouster of President Suharto was probably the single biggest reform the nation has experienced. Newspapers, TV stations and Web portals have proliferated and the accompanying boom in social media means that politicians are quick to have their every foible dissected somewhere.

But it is far from a perfect picture. There are still bad laws on the books, and ownership of the media -- especially large TV news operations is virtually all controlled by large conglomerates where either commercial or political considerations color coverage.

Aburizal Bakrie's TVOne is a 24-hour news channel with predictably upbeat coverage of the Golkar leader, mining tycoon and presidential aspirant. Metro TV, the biggest Indonesian news channel, is controlled by politician and tycoon Suhrya Paloh of the NasDem Party. Businessman Chairul Tanjung, who is also presumed to harbor presidential aspirations, owns the large TransTV operation, which features both news and entertainment, and the dominant Detik.com news site.

Hary Tanoesoedibjo, a Chinese entrepreneur and political operator, runs the MNC group, which has TV, radio, newspapers and Web sites and calls itself the largest media group in the country. He is currently aligned with the Hanura Party of Suharto-era general Wiranto. The relatively minor Berita Satu Media Group, which owns the influential Jakarta Globe English newspaper, other dailies and a cable news channel, is controlled by the Lippo Group, whose president is the deputy chairman of the Golkar Party. Even the vaunted Kompas newspaper, Indonesia largest, is not immune to political and commercial colorations, insiders say.

In other words, commercial and political pressures are a daily fact of life in most large newsrooms. But so is the constant stream of social media, twitter and other forms of alternative media that keep the powers that be under an often uncomfortable microscope of public scrutiny.

Doubtless conservative religious groups, local thugs and powerful interests can bring pressure to bear to censor entertainment shows from time to time and keep particularly uncomfortable books off the shelf. And while Indonesian journalists may be able to carry out their work with few government threats, the general public is still being nannied by a restrictive government that decides what they should see and hear. Press freedom is more than not being physically threatened and attacked.

Freedom Fest ‘13: ‘Home of the Brave’

Freedom Fest wouldnt be what it is without the participation of the community. This year, when the people of Murray come together to enjoy food, friends and music, the faces in the crowd we hope to recognize most are those of our countrys veterans. Home of the Brave is the theme of the 2013 FNB Freedom Fest Parade, taking place June 29.

In keeping with the theme, the FNB Bank Parade will honor our nations veterans as grand marshals. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. featuring various community groups and their patriotic floats, cars and of course, candy.

We are so fortunate to be able to celebrate like we do, said Erin Carrico, executive director of the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau. Its the perfect time to celebrate the people who give us freedom throughout the years - our veterans.

Carrico said she is excited to see the entries for the parade, as they are always new and exciting.

I think, with the theme, well see impressive entries from all of the participating organizations. Everyone is always eager to show their hard work, and now theres the added bonus of paying tribute to our veterans. We hope to see good use of our nations colors.

The parade route begins at 10th St. and Main, passing across the Court Square, ending in the Briggs & Stratton parking lot. The lineup process will begin at 8 a.m. to ensure a prompt 9:30 a.m. parade start.

Individuals and groups interested in being a part of the parade can download an application from http://www.tourmurray.com or call (270) 759-2199. Participation is free and the deadline to turn in an application in Friday, June 14. Late applications will not be accepted.

There will be a Veterans Remembrance Ceremony in Chestnut Park at the Veterans Memorial on July 4, at 7:30 a.m. All veterans and community members are invited to attend. For a complete schedule of Freedom Fest activities visit the website or like Freedom Fest on Facebook.

This year we invite residents to share kind words with our veterans with the use of social media. Go to facebook.com/murraykentucky and write on our wall, or tweet your thanks using #freedomfestky on Twitter. The Murray CVB will compile the responses and distribute them to the veterans participating in the FNB Bank Freedom Fest Parade, commented a CVB spokesperson.

Freedom Foods: “gluten-free – should always mean free from gluten”

May 29, 2013 (Sponsored article)

Freedom Foods is opposed to the Australian Food and Grocery Council (the AFGC) proposition that Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) alter the definition of gluten-free in Australia and, as a consequence, lower Australias food safety standards.

Freedom Foods says the issue comes down to the simple concept of truthfulness in food labelling. Consumers, like never before, expect food labelling to be accurate and clear with respect the contents or otherwise of the food contained therein. In Australia and New Zealand under existing food standards regulations consumers buying a product that says gluten-free on the label can be assured that the product does not contain any traces of gluten.

The current FSANZ regulations require food manufacturers to ensure there is no detectable level of gluten in foods when making a gluten-free claim.

The AFGC wants FSANZ to allow a food to contain up to 20 milligrams of gluten per kilogram to still be called gluten-free. This would bring the Australian regulation of gluten-free claims in line with British and European standards. Some argue that 10 milligrams per kilogram would be safer for coeliac sufferers. Freedom Foods takes the view that the current testing requirement of non-detectable levels is the only level at which free from can be a legitimate and truthful claim and not be misleading to consumers.

In the dairy industry lactose free is expected to mean exactly that the product is free from lactose and therefore safe for those people who have lactose intolerance to consume. Similarly you cannot have small particles of nuts, such as peanut in products because of the dangers of nut products to sufferers of anaphylaxis.

Freedom Foods believes that the proposal by the AFGC would lead to an inconsistent, misleading and ultimately confusing labelling approach being taken by FSANZ.

The food industry has worked hard to win consumer confidence and changing the gluten-free designation will not help to maintain the confidence of consumers.

The AFGC argues that the current regulations make production and testing of Gluten Free foods cost prohibitive and restrict variety and options for Australian consumers. This is plainly not correct on either position, said Michael Bracka, CEO of Freedom Foods.

The Australian Gluten Free market is one of the most developed in the world and compares more than favorably in terms of cost, variety and availability. In terms of costs, there is no cost differential in the requirements for manufacture and testing of products at 20mg per 1kg and non-detectable levels. The process, technical requirements and costs are identical the production and testing of safe Gluten Free foods require expertise, technical and quality assurance processes and a strong and sustainable supply chain to source appropriate ingredients at all stages of the supply chain, Mr Bracka said.

Cyborg joins Infinite Crisis’ roster, but Shazam is still cooler

We played Infinite Crisis back when it was revealed at GDC, and not much has changed since then. It still pits teams of five in MOBA battles, merging together the infinite universes that make up the DC mythos. Being able to duel Nightmare Batman (a giant, evil vampire bat) against Gaslight Batman (a steampunk-flavored vigilante) is a dream come true for fans of DCs universe(s), and works perfectly within the confines of the MOBA formula.

We recently had a chance to play it again, and went on a rampage as Shazam--even though we were against Cyborg, the newly added hero that the developers admitted was in desperate need of a nerfing.

Shazam is a bruiser with a focus on melee. He has a dash, a static field, and the ability to imbue his fists with the power of electricity. His ultimate attack shouldnt come as a surprise to DC fans: he screams SHAZAM! and a bolt of lightning strikes down from the heavens. This came in handy when Cyborg showed up, blasting a barrage of beams in our direction like he owned the place. We took him down without too much of a problem, though, because even an overpowered hero is no match for our hundreds of hours spent playing League of Legends. Turbine is ramping up towards closed beta for Infinite Crisis, so you can head over to the official website and sign up. We cant imagine the release is too far away, though--what we played felt super polished, and were eager to go in for more.

Beaches lose up to 3m of sand after king tides

Topics: new brighton beach, south golden beach

BYRON Bay Beaches continue to cop a battering with South Golden and New Brighton beaches losing up to 3m of sand with the recent king tides and large ocean swells.

Beach accesses in South Golden Beach at Pacific Avenue, Peter, Helen and Robin Streets are all closed. Gloria Street beach access is open.

Byron Shire Council's executive manager of community infrastructure, Phil Holloway, said the beaches in the north of the shire had been significantly impacted from the high tides and large ocean swells over the past week.

"The three viewing platforms at Peter, Helen and Robin Streets are now very close to the dunal escarpment and will be removed over the coming days.

"The timber will be carefully stored at the council works depot until such time that they can be safely rebuilt."

Just over a month ago, council removed the viewing platform at Gloria Street in South Golden Beach due to coastal erosion.

Mr Holloway said the recent weather, tides and ocean swells have meant that the beaches have not had time to replenish.

"There is simply not enough sand present to be able to reinstate the beach accesses.

"When some sand has returned, staff will be able to get in and build better walking gradients for beach accesses," he said.

After Sandy: NYC beaches a model for rebuilding

Garrison Architects

By Denise Chow LiveScience

After Hurricane Sandy ravaged New York City's coastlines, city officials knew that any effort to rebuild the damaged beaches had to make sustainability a top priority. Rather than simply replacing what was destroyed, they had to make sure new structures on the shores were built to withstand the next Sandy-like storm.

Enter Jim Garrison. In December, his Brooklyn-based firm, Garrison Architects, was contacted by the New York City Department of Design and Construction to build a collection of lifeguard and comfort stations for beaches in Staten Island, the Rockaways in Queens and Coney Island in Brooklyn. The new permanent structures are intended to replace those that were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012.

Garrison Architects was awarded a $106 million contract to build at least 35 buildings on an ambitious deadline: 19 of the structures were expected to be openMemorial Day weekend. [On the Ground: Hurricane Sandy in Images]

"There's still a lot to do, but it's great to finally see them in place," Garrison said. "I'm very critical of our work all the time I judge us according to the highest standards, but I think these are very good."

With only five months to construct the beach stations, Garrison and his colleagues came up with a design for so-called modular buildings, which are structures that are put together from prefabricated sections, or modules.

"We've been working on this process for quite a while," Garrison told LiveScience. "We wanted it to be highly industrialized, something capable of being built in a factory with all its components. It had to be a system that was prototypical and repeatable."

The steel-framed modular stations will sit on a series of pilings, elevating them above current storm-surge levels put forth by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and making them flood resistant. But Garrison also wanted the facilities to be energy efficient, equipped with solar panels to help generate electricity and hot water heating, skylights to capture natural sunlight and ventilation that takes advantage of wind coming off the water.
