GKN Aerospace Opens New U.S. BizJet Engine Integration Facility

Mon, Jun 03, 2013

GKN Aerospace is set to open a new 24,000 square foot facility where it will consolidate the companys integration activity for Honeywells HTF7000 series of business jet engines. The new facility will sit alongside the Honeywell operation in Phoenix, AZ and will pod Honeywells engines into GKN Aerospace designed and manufactured nacelles for HTF7000 powered aircraft - including Bombardier, Gulfstream and Embraer business jets. GKN Aerospace will then deliver the complete propulsion system, on Honeywells behalf, directly to the appropriate airframe end customer assembly line.

The Arizona site will commence operation this fall, becoming fully functional by the end of the year when it is expected to employ up to 50 people, handling the podding of engines for the Bombardier CL300 and CL350, the Gulfstream G280 and the Embraer 450/500 business jets. At capacity, the site will be capable of assembling 28 complete power systems per month. "We have worked closely with Honeywell since the commencement of their highly successful HTF7000 engine programme in the late 1990s - with our engineering team designing the nacelle to be uniquely adaptable and multi-application," said Phil Swash, CEO, GKN Aerospace - Europe and Special Products. "These engines have now been selected to power several different aircraft and so the time is right to establish a more geographically and logistically efficient location for the integration process. Our new operation will allow us to cut transport costs, reduce cycle times and extend the flexibility of the service we offer Honeywell and their aircraft prime customers.

Aerospace firm in US expansion move

2 June 2013 Last updated at 19:27 ET

Engineering group MB Aerospace has bought a US-based aero engine component maker in a multi-million dollar deal.

The Motherwell-based firm confirmed it had acquired Delta Industries but did not disclose how much it paid.

Delta, which is based in Connecticut, reported annual sales last year of more than $60m (39.5m).

The deal will boost MB Aerospace's projected annual revenue to more than 100m and raise staff numbers from 370 to 550.

The firm's US staff count now stands at more than 400, with the rest spread across three UK sites.

The deal comes only a few months after US private equity firm Arlington Capital Partners bought a majority stake in MB Aerospace.

The company, which specialises in machined and fabricated components for global aerospace and defence manufacturers, announced at the time it would embark on a series of acquisitions as part of an expansion drive.

MB Aerospace chief executive Craig Gallagher said establishing a new base in the aerospace community of Connecticut was a strategic step for the group as it broadened its customer reach and skills base.

He added: "With its wide range of capabilities, long-standing customer relationships and its strong management team, the Delta business has been a long-term target for MB Aerospace. It is a perfect fit with our ambitions for future growth.

- Delta Deal Will Lift Group's 2013 Revenues To 100m / $160m-

The multi-million dollar deal to acquire Delta, based in Hartford, Connecticut, will expand the MB Aerospace business to projected revenues of more than $160m (100m) and to 550 employees (up from 370) for the 2013 financial year.

The acquisition follows MB Aerospace chief executive Craig Gallagher leading a secondary MBO of MB Aerospace sponsored by Washington DC based private equity firm Arlington Capital Partners ('Arlington') in March of this year.

Mr Gallagher said: "With its wide range of capabilities, long-standing customer relationships and its strong management team, the Delta business has been a long-term target for MB Aerospace. It is a perfect fit with our ambitions for future growth.

"We are delighted to have succeeded in securing such a highly prized company and we believe that the combined group is positioned to take advantage of the available opportunities for further expansion in the months and years ahead.

"Today's announcement adds significant technical capabilities to the group, especially in relation to large-diameter fabrications and robotic welding of complex high-value aero engines components. In addition to its high levels of capability, Delta has an industry-leading reputation for its ability to manufacture challenging system-critical components."

The enlarged group now has a range of capabilities able to provide OEMs with engineering skills/services alongside the complex products found throughout aero, marine and industrial gas turbine engines. Core product technologies include casings, complex fabricated casings, rotating rings, complex structural assemblies and a range of diffusers, sync rings and high-value casings.
