He might not be the next Roger Ebert, but that didnt stop futurist and artificial-intelligence pioneer Ray Kurzweil from giving Spike Jonzes Oscar-nominated and slightly satirical sci-fi dramedyHera strongly positive review on cinematic if not all technology grounds. This is a breakthrough concept in cinematic futurism in the way thatThe Matrixpresented a realistic vision that virtual reality will ultimately be as real as, well, real reality, Kurzweil writes in a review posted recently on his site KurzweilAI.net. Kurzweil, now Googles director of engineering, is author of books such asThe Singularity Is Nearand The Age of Spiritual Machines and subject of the documentaryTranscendent Man, all of which detail Kurzweils vision of a future when computer intelligence becomes self aware and merges more fully with human intelligence.

Overall, Kurzweil calls the film very successful, and says it does a better job than most predecessors, such as Steven SpielbergsA.I.,in portraying a plausible future where a human and an artificial intelligence could have some sort of relationship.

InHer,Joaquin Phoenixs lonely and depressed lead character Theodore becomes enamored with the operating system, which he dubs Samantha, that he has installed on his computer. Samantha, seductively voiced by Scarlett Johansson, becomes more and more emotionally involved with Theodore, even as Samantha grows more sophisticated and independent.

Kurzweils caveats are mostly about the timing and rapidity of some technology developments portrayed in Jonzes slightly-in-the-future world.
His biggest beef, though,is a familiar one to his longtime followers, revolving around the films portrayal of artificial intelligence as a stand-alone creation. Samantha and Theodore have issues, despite some creative efforts to get around it, with the fact that one of them has a body and the other one doesnt, and one of them is developing rapidly into something new.

But in the future, Kurzweil says, that wont be a problem. An AI, he says, wont be over there, separate from and disconnected from and eventually superior to humans, but part of and merged with them.

Workers at the Shannon Aerospace aircraft maintenance facility have voted for industrial action in a dispute over pension contributions.
Members of SIPTU have voted for a four-hour work stoppage on 4 March and will refuse to work overtime in the meantime.
The company had previously informed the 500 employees that it intends to cease contributions to its Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
The move is despite the fact that the scheme is not in deficit and the company is profitable.
Workers have opposed the move, arguing that there is no need for management to close the Defined Benefit Scheme and replace it with a Defined Contribution Scheme, which carries greater risk for employees.
Shannon Aerospace is owned by the German Lufthansa group, which recently closed another Irish-based facility, Lufthansa Technik Airmotive in Rathcoole, Co Dublin, with the loss of over 400 jobs.
In a previous statement, the company said the outcome of the ballot would have implications for the company.
It expressed hope that "any proposed industrial action could be avoided for the benefit of all stakeholders".

Eleven Darien High School students took home awards for their work at the Southern Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair at Newtown High School on Feb. 8. Thirty-eight Darien students competed in four categories at the event: life sciences, physical sciences, environmental sciences and behavioral sciences.
Each student was required to create a poster exhibit, make a presentation and participate in a question-and-answer session with two sets of judges.
Katie Tsui and Kate Halabi tied for first place in the health science category for their research proposals. Tsui, a sophomore and Darien Times columnist, proposed work on the role of cardiovascular disease on incidences of Alzheimers disease.
For the past semester, I have been studying Alzheimers disease, primarily focusing on epidemiological longitudinal studies along with specific genes and risk factors for the disease, Tsui said. As a sophomore just starting out in the authentic science research course, it was really surprising and unexpected to win. But I was very pleased with the results all the hard work paid off.
Tsui said she hopes to continue studying Alzheimers, as it is something she is very interested in and passionate about.
Kate Halabis proposed project focused on regenerating neural tissue following a stroke using induced pluripotent stem cells. This type of stem cell can be used to regenerate a variety of damaged tissue types and can propagate indefinitely.
Paige Dripp garnered a second place finish in environmental science for her proposal that examined the effect of chlorothanolil on the domesticated honeybee population.
Sonia Gandhi took home second place in behavioral science for her proposal, Breaking the barriers of self-consciousness: The effects of short-term jazz training on non-musicians.
Christian Kanlian won third place in environmental science for a look at how repeated exposure to 1-MCP effects physiochemical, color and soluble solids of tomatoes during ripening in controlled storage.
Lauren Rutledge also took home a third place in the behavioral science category for her work that studied the formation of herds by Tursiops truncatus in the absence of competition. Tursiops truncatus is the scientific name for the bottlenose dolphin.
