Water quality at Southend beaches revealed

Water quality at Southend beaches revealed

3:00pm Sunday 20th April 2014 in News By David Trayner

SIX of Southends beaches have won the official seal of approval for their water quality.

The Marine Conservation Societys Good Beach Guide for 2014 grades Shoebury East Beach, Shoebury Common Beach, Thorpe Bay Beach, Three Shells Beach, Westcliff Beach and Chalkwell Beach as recommended.

Jubilee Beach and Bell Wharf, Leigh, are given a lesser, but still satisfactory grading confirming they are up to mandatory standards.

The guides publication will come as a boost after none of the towns beaches achieved Keep Britain Tidy Blue Flag status last May.

The Environment Agency had also warned Chalkwell and Bell Wharf could fall foul of strict new EU rules on water quality, due to come in next year.

Scott Dolling, Southend Councils acting head of economy, regeneration and tourism, said: I am very pleased all of our beaches have passed Marine Conservation Society scrutiny, with six being recommended as having excellent water quality.

Our beaches are absolutely vital to our tourism and the local economy and I hope local people and visitors will vote with their feet this spring and summer and visit our wonderful beaches and coastline.

A total of 538 out of 734 UK beaches tested last summer have recommended status in the latest guide 135 more than the previous year.

How can we clean up our beaches?

Big Conversation: How can we clean up our beaches?

12:04pm Thursday 17th April 2014 in News

During a two-daylitter-pick 40volunteers filled atleast one bin bag ofrubbish each fromSouthends beaches.

JAMES DONNELLY, 43,FROM SURFERS AGAINSTSEWAGE

Ive been volunteering toclear up my local beacheswith Surfers AgainstSewage and you wouldntbelieve how many bluecotton buds we find. Thereason theyre there isbecause people are flushingthem down the toilet andtheyre ending up in the sea.

People dont realise thatswhere they end up and Idont blame them. I think itshould say on thepackaging do not flushand people should be madeaware they shouldnt beflushing anything like that.

ROGER FISHER, 60, OWNEROF DOODAHS

Generally speaking, Cory doa good job of litter pickingand keeping the beach prettyclean as theyre out there inforce, but one of the bigissues is the general public.Weve got a good number ofbins, but people cant alwaysbe bothered to use them andjust drop stuff where theystand. Ive got a bin ten feetaway from the front door ofDoodahs and people still cantmanage to get their litter in it.We need a bit of education toencourage people to use thebins.

PETER GRUBB, 65, OWNEROF UNCLE TOMS CABIN

Theres a very simpleanswer which is for thecouncil to spend moremoney on their contractorCory. Every year they claimto do more for less, buttheres something wrongsomewhere. They used toremove washed up seaweedand tidy the beach, but nowthey dont bother. When youdont want to do something, you find an environmentalregulation so you dont haveto do it. Seaweed is natural, but when it has tamponsand plastic straws in it, itsanother matter.

Stem cell ‘doctor’ faces more raps for Ateneo grad’s death

MANILA - A businessman has updated the charges he filed with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against a wellness center operator who allegedly caused the death of his daughter, a cum laude graduate of Ateneo de Manila University, last year.

Bernard Tan added the illegal practice of medicine to the charges of estafa and reckless imprudence resulting in homicide he filed in October 2013 against Antonia Carandang-Park, her husband Young Joe Park and some center personnel over the death of his daughter Katherine Grace, 23, on July 4, 2013.

Tan based the additional charge on a certification issued in August 2013 by the Professional Regulation Commission showing that Park does not appear in the database of physicians, which contains the names of those duly authorized to practice medicine in the Philippines.

In an interview, Tan said Kate allegedly underwent stem cell treatment for Hodgkins lymphoma, a type of cancer, at the Green and Young Health and Wellness Center owned by Park in Tagaytay City during the last quarter of 2012.

We went to her clinic and she told us that she already treated a similar case and it would only take three months to treat my daughter We did not know that she is not a doctor, he said.

According to Tan, his daughter was in remission but she no longer wanted to undergo the pain of cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.

She also did not want to miss classes because she was graduating cum laude in March 2013. So when we heard about Park, we went to her clinic in Tagaytay, he said.

Tan said Park had promised his family that she could cure Kate within three months, provided that she will not receive any complimentary treatment from other doctors. She assured the family that she already treated a similar case in the past.

Tan said Park had injected embryonic stem cells into his daughter several times and Kate was fed only bananas and vegetable juices for three months.

Three months passed but my daughters condition was not improving. She started to lose weight. She was deteriorating so we brought her to (conventional doctors), he said.

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a move that was 20 years in the making, the Utica Comets coming to town has not only given the City an exciting boost when fans flock to The Aud for games, but it is also giving the city a much needed economic boost as well.

Before and after Comets games, fans are out eating and drinking around Downtown Utica. Local restaurants have seen sales soar due to the resurgence of activity in the area.

In fact, Frank Cristiano, owner of the new sports bar & restaurant, Tony's Audelicious built the establishment behind The Aud, just because comets came to town and he saw an opportunity for business to flourish.

For the Hotel Utica, the host hotel for the Comets, the winter months can usually be slow for business.

Workington Comets set for double-header

Last updated at 13:23, Saturday, 19 April 2014

Workington Comets will be aiming to get their season back on track this weekend with a League Cup double-header against Berwick Bandits.

Laura Morgan

Comets riders will be out to make amends after being beaten home and away by Edinburgh Monarchs in the cup last weekend.

Comets travel to Berwick tonight and then host the North East club at Derwent Park tomorrow night. Both are 7pm starts.

Comets owner Laura Morgan said: Lets hope we can redeem ourselves.

We are literally hoping to get back on track. All of us feel like we owe the supporters big time.

We have said what needed to be said about last week. We have put it behind us and moved on.

I am definitely looking to see a response from the riders this weekend and the riders are desperate to give us a response.

Berwick have had quite a few useful scores at home and they have got some good riders. We will go there and keep our wits about us.

Disney World listed among 10 'most disappointing' travel destinations

ORLANDO --

Disney World, disappointing?

Many in Central Florida would beg to differ, but travel website Smarter Travel has named Walt Disney World one of the "10 Most Disappointing Destinations in the World."

Smarter Travel's reasoning behind calling the Mouse House "more letdown than must-see" has a lot to do with high prices not just for admission, but for food and drinks inside the theme parks.

Paying $99 per day to be trapped in a park surrounded by other peoples' children and fully grown adults who like Disney? No thanks.

Even a bottle of water will run you $2.50 once you're within reach of the Mouse's greedy grasp.

Other U.S. tourist destinations deemed overrated by Smarter Travel include Niagara Falls, Hollywood, Liberty Island and Las Vegas.

India, China to lead in global travel in next decade: Oxford study

A study by world renowned Oxford Economics, an affiliate of Oxford University, states that a handful of Asian countries, including India and China, would lead in global travel in the next 10 years due to improving economy and growing income. The study has been commissioned by Amadeus, a technology provider to travel industry.

According to the study, along with India and China, other large emerging markets will be Russia, Brazil, Indonesia and Turkey and each of these too will average more than 5% annual growth over the next 10 years.

The study draws on detailed macro-economic modelling as well as qualitative interviews with industry experts to forecast a wide range of future trends, including pockets of growth and opportunity that will shape the next decade of travel.

"Forecasts predict a new golden era for travel, which will be welcome news for many segments of the industry that are only just beginning to emerge. Oxford Economics defines outbound travel as travel from the originating country to another country," said Holger Taubmann, SVP Distribution, Amadeus.

The report goes on to add that macro trends driving industry growth over the next decade predict an optimistic macro-economic outlook for global travel over the next 10 years, with the industry projected to outstrip global GDP by some 2%, growing 5.4% per annum.

Moreover, global travel is now set to grow at a significantly faster rate than during the financial crisis. Also, China's growth in outbound travel, which as recently as 2005 stood at just 1%, will enable it to overtake the US to become the world's largest outbound travel market this year.
