Are Florida beaches shrinking? And is Global Warming to blame?

Story by Michael Ehrenberg / CBS 12 NEWS

We're all aware of the controversy surrounding Global Warming. Some believe in it.. others don't.

Regardless, many communities are taking action now to combat the very real possibility that their beaches may eventually disappear.

Weather records show that since 1970, average temperatures have risen anywhere from 1 to 3 degrees.

The result, melting sea ice in the Arctic, expanding ocean water and smaller beaches.

This has impacted over 1 million people. The most dire predictions show a sea level rise of over 6 feet by 2100.

One town in particular, Palm Beach, has renourished their beaches several times.

Palm Beach has always had issues with sand disappearing, mainly from storms, the Palm Beach Inlet and construction of jetties. Global Warming Sea level rise only adds to the problem. The town is ready to change the way they currently beef up their beaches.

It may come to a point in the future where the design of the beach needs to be greater than what it is today. They would build it up in a higher elevation and build it out further as well which requires more sand.

Repeatedly dumping sand. Sure it's expensive but necessary. There is no long term permanent solution right now.

A new nanoglue is expected to have applications in surgery and regenerative medicine for humans and animals alike. AFP/Relaxnews pic, April 21, 2014.Thanks to the progress of nanomedicine, stitches could soon become a thing of the past, giving way to nanoglue. The efficacy of the innovative technique has now been demonstrated in vivo.

Effective and easy to use, the revolutionary solution of silica nanoparticles is capable of closing deep wounds in a matter of seconds.

Developed last December by a team of researchers from the Soft Materials and Chemistry Laboratory (ESPCI/CNRS) and the Laboratory for Vascular Translational Science (Paris Diderot University) in France, the solution was the subject of a publication in the scientific journal Angewandte Chemie dated April 16.

The researchers were able to test the nanoglue procedure alongside current conventional methods for sealing deep wounds or repairing cuts to an organ, and the results lived up to expectations. The nanoglue method resulted in minimal scarring, an absence of necrosis or inflammation, and rapid healing of the wound. Hemorrhaging is quickly stopped and organ function is preserved.

The solution withstands immersion in water and is self-repairing, according to the CNRS, making it ideal for joining two pieces of skin or organ tissue during surgery. Silica is a widely available material, as it is used extensively in manufacturing and as a food additive.

Ambiquity a New Life Perspective

It's time we developed a new "life perspective" how humans understand where life begins, what happens when life ends and what humans should do in between to gain a meaningful existence.

Like the Model T, the sextant and the typewriter, current life perspectives are out of date because they haven't kept pace with the evolution of human thought.

Some perspectives include Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Taoism, Hinduism, agnosticism, atheism and tribalism, though there are others.

In the new life perspective, the archaic tenets from the old life perspectives are discarded or modified.

For example, the tenet of sin in which a human is automatically born with imperfections needing forgiveness will be chucked in favor of a new tenet called "A-OK," which assumes that humans are born good and can continue as such.

Another tenet, that of an afterlife, will be reformed.

No longer will humans be judged at death as to whether their soul will proceed to a blissful place or purgatory. Instead, this tenet will merge reincarnation with chemistry to explain that humans perpetually extend their physical presence after their death, because their bodies break down into molecules that disperse across the universe.

Another tenet, the concept of guilt and its associated feeling of regret, will be sent packing. It will be replaced with the tenet of personal comfort, which states that if humans behave badly, then they can still be comfortable with themselves because they are learning from their mistakes instead of feeling badly about themselves.

And a final tenet, that people must pledge their devotion to a higher authority, will be tossed.

No longer will the higher authority be an intangible entity residing somewhere up above. The new authority receiving devotion will be a more powerful entity: one's self, right here on earth.

The New Safety Umbrella for school children

Magnasoft Northstar is a provider of comprehensive, integrated child and school bus tracking and monitoring solution. The services enable children's safety and security when they travel to and from school.

During the beta phase, Magnasoft Northstar hosted and managed dedicated hardware on its own. But this had its own set of challenges in terms of increasing capex and inability to scale, which led to the adoption of cloud. The human resource thus freed were put to efficient use on advancing business and providing better quality of service and agility to customers at lower prices and become a force to reckon with amongst competition.

TECH DUE DILIGENCE

Before evaluating the solutions by different vendors, MagnaSoft NorthStar team laid down some parameters aimed at zeroing on the right and best solution available in the market. In the end it took the cloud plunge. It also created a roadmap and listed its expectations from the cloud roll out. The key considerations were:

THE EUREKA MOMENT

After screening various solutions, the management identified that Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the right solution. According to company sources, the key considerations for choosing AWS were pricing, support, reliability, and technology agnosticism. AWS won on all parameters, with the cost-effective plan and a huge set of AMIs that helped to pick the right technology platform with ease.

"Moving to the AWS cloud platform, we have experienced savings of 40% versus renting or purchasing dedicated hardware and hosting it ourselves. We were also able to go to market 60% faster with our roll-outs. It enabled us to push out our new releases in a matter of a few hours down from three days," adds Kunal Ashar, Head of Product Development Division, Magnasoft Northstar. He further adds, "As we continue to add over 100GB of new data every week, using Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) has helped us save 70% in new RAID hardware."

With this, Magnasoft Northstar can provide updates to customers from 85% (on-premise hosting) to 100%. However, with AWS, the deployment, management, and monitoring of very large infrastructure is handled and maintained by just a fraction of the human resources required as compared to a traditional box & wire' data center-based infrastructure. This is because a significant amount of automation is enabled by the likes of monitoring services offered by Amazon CloudWatch which aims to build auto-scaling triggers into the application layer itself.

Top Phoenix Foot and Ankle Specialist, Valley Foot Surgeons, Now Offering Stem Cell Procedures for Healing Diabetic …

Phoenix, Arizona (PRWEB) April 21, 2014

The top foot and ankle specialists in Arizona at Valley Foot Surgeons are now offering stem cell treatments for diabetic wounds. The treatments may propel these difficult wounds to heal in a much shorter time frame than they would without regenerative medicine therapy. The stem cell doctor is a four-time Phoenix Magazine Top Doc Winner; call (480) 994-5977 for more information and scheduling.

With up to a third of individuals suffering from diabetes (or pre-diabetes), wounds and ulcers are becoming more common all the time in the foot and ankle area. Due to the immunocompromised state of diabetics, it can be extremely difficult for the human body to naturally heal these wounds. Sometimes, they persist for years, become infected, and may lead to an eventual need for an amputation.

At Valley Foot Surgeons, Phoenix Top Doc Richard Jacoby is now offering stem cell treatments for diabetic wounds. These treatments are performed as an outpatient and involve subcutaneous injections of amniotic derived stem cell material around the wound.

The procedure offers several benefits in addition to a hefty concentration of stem cells. The material is immunologically privileged and does not cause a rejection reaction. It is processed from an FDA regulated lab.

The amniotic derived stem cells assists with the creation of new blood vessels to help heal the wounds and also contains a significant amount of growth factors. The stem cell material also has antimicrobial properties, helping avoid infection.

Along with the stem cell procedures, Valley Foot Surgeons offers laser treatment simultaneously which further helps with the healing process. With approximately 100 stem cell procedures performed so far for diabetic wounds, the outcomes have been nothing short of incredible.

Wounds have been healing, and much faster than with conventional methods. For more information and treatment with the top foot and ankle stem cell doctor in Phoenix and Scottsdale, call (480) 420-3499.

Single Cell Type Found To Cause Most Invasive Bladder Cancers: Study

Lawrence LeBlond for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online

Invasive bladder cancer (IBC), a malignant disease that currently affects more than 375,000 people worldwide, has been found to be caused by a single type of cell in the lining of the bladder, according to researchers with the Stanford University School of Medicine.

The researchers say this is the first study to pinpoint the normal cell type that can give rise to IBC. It is also the first study to show that most bladder cancers and their precancerous lesions arise from just one cell, which could also explain why many bladder cancers recur after therapy.

Weve learned that, at an intermediate stage during cancer progression, a single cancer stem cell and its progeny can quickly and completely replace the entire bladder lining, Philip Beachy, PhD, professor of biochemistry and of developmental biology, said in a statement. All of these cells have already taken several steps along the path to becoming an aggressive tumor. Thus, even when invasive carcinomas are successfully removed through surgery, this corrupted lining remains in place and has a high probability of progression.

Beachy and colleagues found that while cancer stem cells and the precancerous lesions they form express an important signaling protein known as sonic hedgehog, the cells of subsequent invasive cancers invariably do not a critical switch that appears vital for invasion and metastasis. This switch may explain certain confusing aspects of previous studies on the cellular origins of bladder cancer in humans. It also pinpoints a possible weak link in cancer progression that could be targeted by therapies.

This could be a game changer in terms of therapeutic and diagnostic approaches, said Michael Hsieh, MD, PhD, assistant professor of urology and a co-author of the study. Until now, its not been clear whether bladder cancers arise as the result of cancerous mutations in many cells in the bladder lining as the result of ongoing exposure to toxins excreted in the urine, or if its due instead to a defect in one cell or cell type. If we can better understand how bladder cancers begin and progress, we may be able to target the cancer stem cell, or to find molecular markers to enable earlier diagnosis and disease monitoring.

Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men and the ninth in women. There are two main types of bladder cancer: one that invades the muscle around the bladder and then metastasizes to other organs, and another that remains confined to the bladder lining. Unlike noninvasive cancers, most invasive bladder cancers are untreatable. Those that can be treated are expensive and difficult to cure, and with a high likelihood of recurrences, ongoing monitoring is required.

To determine what genes or cell types are at play in the formation of bladder cancer, the study team used a mouse model that closely mimicked what happens in humans. Usually, researchers rely on prior knowledge or guesses as to what genes are involved and often genetically alter cell types in animals to induce overexpression of a gene known to be involved in tumorigenesis or to block the expression of a gene that inhibits cancer development.

Previous work by Beachy and his colleagues suggested that basal cells play a role in bladder cancer. However, the new study offered an unbiased approach.

Fremont, CA (PRWEB) April 21, 2014

Lutronic, a leading innovator of aesthetic and medical technology, secured its global presence as a leading provider of laser, light-based, radiofrequency (RF) technologies at the 12th Annual Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress in Monte-Carlo, Monaco from April 3-5, 2014.

Dr. Glen Calderhead PhD DrMedSci, a founding member of the International Association for Laser and Sports Medicine (IASLM) and the World Medical Antiageing Association (WAMA), was invited by the AMWC organizing committee to deliver two special guest lectures during the congress scientific sessions for the European LED Academy on low level light therapy both as standalone and adjunctive treatments, represented by the HEALITE phototherapy system. Dr. Calderhead also gave a contributing lecture in the aesthetic dermatology session on the extended features of the SPECTRA XT, a new paradigm in Q-switched Nd:YAG laser treatment.

Dr. Jean-Luc H. Vigneron, M.D, a teacher at the Aesthetic Dermatology University of Paris V featured non ablative fractional resurfacing technology with the INFINI, during a scientific session, in which microneedling RF treatment for skin resurfacing was highlighted.

On the evening of the first day of the congress, Lutronic hosted an exclusive symposium at the Fairmont Monte Carlo where nearly 80 clinicians participated to enhance their knowledge and expand their practice. During the symposium, Dr. Bettina Rmmelein, a senior aesthetic physician at the University Hospital, Zurich, shared her clinical experiences with the long-pulsed alexandrite and Nd:YAG combined platform, CLARITY. It is in constant use because it covers a wide range of indications and enables fast visible results, including effective, fast hair removal. Patients are very satisfied and so am I, she stated. She was also willing to share her clinical experience of SPECTRA in treating pigmented lesions such as melasma, tattoo and any other dermal/epidermal pigmentation. Patients can see significant improvements which I couldnt achieve with the ruby Laser, and I have been using a new Nd:YAG-based multiplatform with extended functionality, the SPECTRA XT, for a couple of months and can see good results with 660 nm RuVY (Ruby-like Versatile YAG) Touch treatment for off-face pigmentation, she added.

Dr. Matteo Tretti Clementoni, a plastic surgeon in Italy, a world-renowned physician, shared his knowledge of the INFINI for treating skin laxity, acne scars and neck lifting. He particularly emphasized how much value INFINI can bring to the treatment of facial contouring, sagging neck and skin laxity. The secret of the device is that I can precisely deliver the exact amount of energy to achieve a controlled coagulation zone in the target area in the dermis, while protecting the skin surface, said Dr. Clementoni. If you want to obtain clinical results with a short downtime and at low cost, INFINI is definitely a good choice, he said.

While on the subject of INFINI, it also attracted a great deal of attention at the Lutronic booth during the AMWC from European clinicians who are not familiar with microneedling RF. As a result, many now INFINI represents a new trend for aesthetic procedures in Europe.
