'Utah Freedom Memorial' in Sandy tells the cost of freedom

SANDY For Tony and Amy Galvez, losing a son in the U.S. Marines Corps to insurgent forces in Iraq is something they think about every day.

"It's not something you get over," Tony Galvez said.

But the family now has a new place to go and remember their soldier.

Sandy City dedicated the "Utah Freedom Memorial" last week, located just south of Sandy City Hall. The memorial was erected to honor men and women of the nation's armed forces and to instill greater appreciation of freedom among youth.

Friday's dedication ceremony was a moment Tony Galvez has been working toward for more than seven years alongside Sandy City.

"It's a Utah monument for not just the fallen it's not a death monument, it's a living monument," Galvez said. "It's for those who have served in the past, those who are currently serving and those who will serve in the future."

The monument centerpiece features a 15-foot-tall granite pentagonal obelisk, each side highlighting one of the five branches of the military. Interpretational panels also surround the monument, entitled, "Freedom Cherished Gratefully," "Battles Fought Courageously," "Loss Remembered Reverently," "Lives Altered Permenantly," and "Hope Held Faithfully."

A separate pillar features a "Cross & Vault" display intended to remember "the high cost of freedom." Opposite the display is the statue of a woman touching the reflection of the hand of her soldier, honoring "the courageous sacrifice of those who are left behind" during military deployments.

Freedom Sweep Wild Things with Extra Inning Victory

May 17, 2014 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom (Florence, KY) - Drama was the name of the game in the Florence Freedom's (3-0) 2014 opening series sweep of the Washington Wild Things (0-3).

Cole Miles scored the winning run Thursday night to begin the series on a walk-off walk. He drove in the winning run Saturday night with a walk-off single in the 10th inning as Florence prevailed 6-5.

The game was a back and forth affair that saw neither team able to hang on to a lead for long.

Washington got on the board first against Florence starter Casey Henn thanks to a C.J. Beatty two-run home run in the top of the third. But the Freedom responded right away in the bottom of the frame. Nick Stein got things rolling with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left. Bobby Joe Tannehill singled and Niko Gallego executed a bunt single to put two runners on for the Freedom. Miles bunted both runners over and Buddy Sosnoskie grounded out to second base to drive in Tannehill.

The game remained tied at two until the fifth. With one out, Ryan Kresky singled for Washington. He would advance to second on a Henn balk and score on a Stewart Ijames single.

The 3-2 lead for the Wild Things did not last long. With one out in the sixth, Joe Staley went yard for his second home run of the season to tie the game at three. Then with two away, Kyle Bluestein drew a walk. That chased Washington starter Tim Flight from the game. Bluestein stole second and new pitcher Jhonny Montoya surrendered a single to Stein. Bluestein scored and the Freedom had their first lead of the game.

Chris Cummins entered the game for Henn in the seventh. With one out, Kresky reached on a Tannehill error. Beatty singled him to third and Kresky would score later in the inning on a wild pitch from reliever Pete Levitt.

With the game tied at four the Freedom got lead-off doubles in the seventh and eighth but were unable to translate them into runs.

Washington took yet another lead in the top of the 10th as a bloop triple scored a run to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Wild Things.

But Jonathan Kountis struggled with his control in the bottom of the 10th, walking Staley and hitting Sam Eberle. Bluestein laid down a perfect bunt up the first base line to load the bases with nobody out. Kountis then plunked Stein and the game was tied again.

Freedom Memorial dedicated in Sandy

SANDY Though many things may divide Americans, on a pleasant Friday evening in Sandy, a memorial brought many people back together.

"There's no politics here. There's no Democrat, no Republican. This is American, Tony Galvez, one of the speakers during the dedication, said.

If anyone knows what being an American means, it's Galvez.

His son, Adam, was killed while serving in the United States Marines Corps in Iraq in 2006.

When he was asked to speak at Friday nights dedication for the Utah Freedom Memorial, he was simply happy that people still remembered.

"I couldn't be a more proud father than I am of my son, Galvez said.

But remembering sacrifices is only a part of what this memorial is about.

Middendorf Leads Freedom to Another Victory

May 16, 2014 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom (Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (2-0) pounded out 13 hits but it was the pitching of Dave Middendorf (1-0) that paced them to a 6-2 victory Friday night over the Washington Wild Things (0-2).

Middendorf went seven innings, scattering four hits and giving up only two runs. He was a strike throwing machine, walking only one and striking out three. The lefty threw 93 pitches, 58 of them for strikes to pick up the victory.

Offensively, once again the Freedom jumped out to the early lead. They jumped on Washington starter Chris Phelan (0-1) for three runs in the first and two more in the second.

With one away in the first, Buddy Sosnoskie, making his Freedom debut, singled. Jacob Tanis drew a walk and with two away, and with two strikes on him, Sam Eberle launched a three-run home run the opposite way to right field. It was the Freedom's fourth homer of the young 2014 campaign.

In the second inning, it was Niko Gallego getting the offense started with a single to left. Cole Miles doubled down the right field line and an errant throw from right fielder Stewart Ijames to second base allowed Gallego to score and Miles to advance to third. Sosnoskie smoked a single to score Miles and all of a sudden it was 5-0 Freedom.

Washington attempted a comeback in the fourth, tallying two runs with two outs on a double by Ijames and a Carter Bell single.

But that would be it for their offense as Middendorf regained control to notch the quality start and the win. An Eberle RBI single provided an insurance run in the fourth but it wasn't needed as Florence's pitching was too much.

Ed Kohout and Edgar Valle, a pair of rookies, finished off the game with a scoreless inning apiece. The Freedom bullpen has not allowed a hit through six innings of work this season.

Florence will go for the sweep Saturday night as Casey Henn (5-0, 3.67 ERA in 2013) takes the hill for the Freedom against Washington's Tim Flight (2-2, 3.22 ERA in 2013). First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. Eastern Time. It's a Rockin' Saturday presented by Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, with a post-game concert from DV8. Also, arrive early for a bicycle helmet giveaway courtesy of Braden & Associates Law Firm. It's Sports Trivia night as well.

Eco move hits the height to cut fuel bills

A GREEN energy project will be used to give tenants cheaper fuel bills, housing association bosses said today.

The project could lead to cheaper fuel bills

And local youngsters were on hand to help put the Ecopod in place on the roof of a block of flats in Woodside in Glasgow.

It is the first of its kind to be installed in Scotland and will help fight fuel poverty for more than 500 households which should benefit from warmer homes and up to 40% reduction in their heating and hot water bills.

The Ecopod is one of seven being installed by Queens Cross Housing Association (QCHA) on deck access properties in the north-west Glasgow neighbourhood, an area classified among the 15% most deprived in Scotland.

The Ecopod's heat water using solar panels producing hot water at a lower cost.

Queens Cross chief executive Shona Stephen said she was confident it will make a difference to the lives of tenants.

She said: "Raising the energy efficiency of homes is the most sustainable way to tackle fuel poverty. Indications from comparison sites with Ecopod indicate that our tenants will see significant savings on their fuel bills.

"We're proud to be at the forefront of using innovative technology to reduce carbon emissions and energy usage and delighted to be working so collaboratively with Carillion and British Gas to deliver real benefits to tenants."

The Ecopods will be complimented by gas absorption heat pumps which produce additional heat into the system to help reduce running costs overall.
