There Will Be Press Freedom Under Prabowo's Leadership – Gerindra

JAKARTA, May 22 (Bernama) -- The Gerindra Party says presidential candidate, Prabowo Subianto will guarantee the freedom of the press in Indonesia.

It is convinced that under his leadership, there will be no more restrictions on press freedom such as those seen during the New Order era.

"If Pak Prabowo is elected president, I'm sure that we would enjoy much more press freedom," Gerindra's patron council member, Martin Hutabarat was quoted as saying on Wednesday by Jakarta Post.

Martin said the press in Indonesia was currently forced into submission by Law No.40/1999 on the press and was heavily influenced by globalisation.

He said members of the House of Representatives needed to support the 1999 Press Law that came about at the beginning of the reformation era.

"The direction of press freedom in Indonesia has been determined by the House instead of the president. So what we have now is different from what happened in the New Order era," said Martin.

As a member of the House's Commission III, which oversees legal affairs, Martin said that in the context of globalisation, it would no longer be possible for Indonesia to put restrictions on the press.

Thus, he said, he was not sure that any president chosen in the upcoming election including Prabowo could send the Indonesian press back to its old ways.

"The main enemy of the press is not the president. It's likely that the president would be powerless in facing the press," said Martin.

He said it would likely be media investors and owners who would restrict press freedom.

Wilders May Suffer Setback in Europe Vote, Polls Indicate

Geert Wilderss Freedom Party may lose support in todays European Parliament elections in the Netherlands, polls indicate, bucking a trend thats seeing support for anti-European Union groups rise elsewhere.

Amid the debt crisis thats roiled Europe, parties that share Wilderss anti-EU message are challenging for first place in countries such as the U.K. and France. In the Netherlands, while support has plunged for Mark Ruttes Liberal-led coalition with the Labor Party, the biggest beneficiary has been the D66 party, which is campaigning for a strong Netherlands in a strong Europe.

Polls this week showed the Freedom Party with enough backing for four of the 26 Dutch seats at stake, compared with the five they won in the last elections five years ago. D66 is on course for first place, taking five seats, the polls suggest.

Wilders sought this week to galvanize backing for his party by cutting a star representing the Netherlands out of an EU flag in Brussels. Im taking this star back with me to the Netherlands and theyre never getting it back from us in Brussels, he said in front of photographers and television crews outside the European Parliament.

The Freedom Party leader told reporters in The Hague last week that his aim was to form an alliance with similar-minded parties, including the U.K. Independence Party and Frances Front National, to repatriate powers to national capitals.

Voting takes place today in the Netherlands as well as Britain three days ahead of most of the 28-nation bloc. While no results can be published before voting ends on May 25, NOS television will be giving an indication of how the Dutch have cast their ballots when polls close at 9 p.m. local time.

A weighted average of polls conducted by TNS Nipo and published by PollWatch 2014 shows the Liberals and Labor are set to take seven of the 26 Dutch seats between them. Thats about half the level of support they got in the September 2012 general election, when they won a majority in parliament between them.

Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem announced 6 billion euros ($8.3 billion) of austerity measures last year on top of a previously outlined 16 billion-euro package. Ruttes coalition has been continuing to lose popularity after announcing cuts in health-care spending and changes to the pension system and the housing market.

The European elections could lead to more tensions within the coalition, Sarah de Lange, associate professor of political science at the University of Amsterdam, said in a phone interview.

Clinic to help eugenics victims

North Carolina residents who might have been subjected to a state-sanctioned sterilization program could be qualified for victims compensation under a program seeking victims and their survivors in Greenville.

A free legal clinic is being held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today (doors open until 5 p.m.) at the Lucille W. Gorham Intergenerational Community Center at the corner of Fifth and Tyson streets. The Center for Civil Rights, along with volunteer attorneys and University of North Carolina law students, will assist people in filing claims for compensation from the N.C. Eugenics Asexualization and Sterilization Compensation Program. Claims must be filed by June 30.

Eugenics refers to the intentional and selective breeding of humans and animals to rid the population of characteristics deemed unfit by those administering this practice. In the United States, eugenics was carried out by individuals, nonprofit organizations and state governments that felt human reproduction should be controlled.

The N.C. Eugenics Board program was created by the Legislature in 1933 after a 1929 state sterilization law was ruled constitutional by the N.C. Supreme Court. The program was a part of the former N.C. Department of Public Welfare, and petitions for sterilization were considered by a five-member panel of state officials.

In the late 1940s, the Department of Public Welfare began to promote increased sterilizations as one of several solutions to poverty and illegitimacy. In the late 1950s, a dramatic rise of sterilizations occurred among women who did not reside in state institutions and among blacks. Prior to the 1950s, many of the sterilization orders primarily affected people residing in state institutions. All 100 counties in North Carolina participated in the program.

Between 1929 and 1974, nearly 7,600 documented males and females were sterilized by choice, force or coercion. The youngest victims were 10 years old. About 85 percent of victims were female, and 40 percent of victims were minorities, including blacks and Native Americans, according to a report from the N.C. Office of Justice for Sterilization Victims.

The number of victims alive today is unknown, officials said

The N.C. Justice for Sterilization Victims Foundation was established in 2010 as a division of the N.C. Department of Administration to compensate victims who forcibly were sterilized by North Carolinas Eugenics Board program. The foundation functioned as a clearinghouse to assist victims, serving as the primary point of contact for victims, potential victims and the general public seeking guidance about North Carolinas former sterilization laws and program.

In 2011 and 2012, foundation staff also supported the separate Gubernatorial Task Force on Eugenics Compensation established under Executive Order 83. In July, Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law Senate Bill 402, which created the Eugenics Asexualization and Sterilization Compensation Program. The Office of Justice for Sterilization Victims also was established under that law to determine whether an individual qualifies for compensation, to assist an individual filing a claim, and to implement an outreach program to notify possible qualified victims of the claim process.

In addition to todays event at the IGCC, those who believe that they or someone in their family might have been sterilized under the N.C. Eugenics Board can contact the Office of Justice for Sterilization Victims information line at 1-877-550-6013 or 919-807-4270. Callers seeking to have their names checked against N.C. Eugenics Board program records by filing a claim for compensation will be mailed a form. Claim forms also are available at http://www.sterilizationvictims.nc.gov.
