First-grader at Jackson School in South Phila. dies after becoming ill at school

A 7-year-old student died suddenly after becoming ill at a city public school on Wednesday.

The child, a first grader at Jackson School in South Philadelphia, experienced a medical emergency and appeared to stop breathing. Classroom staff administered CPR and called 911, and the child was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was pronounced dead.

"It's shocking, and it's tragic, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family," said School District spokesman Fernando Gallard.

There was no nurse at Jackson at the time the child, whose name was not released, became ill, Gallard said. The school of 450 students has a nurse every Thursday and every other Friday.

Karyn Lynch, deputy chief of student services, emphasized that people trained in CPR and first aid responded to the child as soon as they became aware he was in distress.

"The minute they looked over and saw him, they immediately performed CPR and called 911," Lynch said.

It was not clear whether the child had a preexisting medical condition. School officials cannot discuss students' medical histories.

Asked whether having a nurse in the building would have made a difference in the child's death, Gallard said: "That's a very difficult question to answer, not knowing what occurred. We're not medical experts. There were trained personnel with CPR certification."

Liberty University Defends Glenn Becks Sermon to Students Despite Mormon Doctrine

LYNCHBURG, Va. Liberty University is defending its decision to invite Glenn Beck totake center stage to address thousands of students during its annual convocation ceremony, whose speech included references to Joseph Smith and Mormon theology.

As previously reported, the outspoken conservative talk show host, and founder of the news outlet The Blaze, compared Mormonism to Christianity during his half-hour speech-turned sermon last month and cited that the Lord gave him a message of coming back to settle scores.

I am Mormon and share your faith, Beck asserted during his spiritually-mixed charge to students, as he stood in front of a large banner bearing the universitys motto, Training Champions for Christ.

Beck was introduced by President Jerry Falwell, who noted that the university presented the political commentator with an honorary doctorate in 2010 as he likewise addressed the students during that time. Falwell remarked that the Sounds of Liberty also performed at Becks Restoring Honor event that year in Washington, which the university chancellor attended.

I heard him yesterday on the radio, Falwell remarked. He probably didnt realize this, but he was using Libertys versesort of our motto hereWhere the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Beck then took the podium to applause and cheers, explaining that he believed he was given a message from God that day to share with the students.

Are you willing to give your life? Beck asked fervently. What are you willing to do? What is it that means something to you?

Days before Joseph Smith was martyred he was taken out by the sheriff; they tried to tar and feather him several times, he explained. The last time they took him, they said, You owe $25. He said, No, I dont owe a man anything. They said, No, you stole a stoveone of the most ridiculous charges Ive ever heard.

At that time, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his pocket watch, Beck continued, displaying the relic that he said belonged to Smith, considered a prophet of God in Mormonism. He gave it to the sheriff and said, I owe no man nothing. They let him go. They killed him, but on the warrant for his arrest, he wrote on the back of his warrant to his people, Put down your guns. No matter what happens, put down your guns. Put down your guns and trust in the Lord.

He then compared Smiths story to the challenges that Liberty students may face in the days ahead.

Liberty baseball team beats Whitehall, reaches District 11 4A semifinals

One bad inning burned Matt Leon in the Lehigh Valley Conference semifinals a week ago.

He didn't let another shaky postseason frame end his high school career.

When his Liberty teammates gave him a second lead Wednesday, Leon went into shutdown mode. He tossed three straight scoreless innings before No. 4 Whitehall managed a meaningless seventh-inning run.

Leon pushed his pitch count to 122 to finish what he started, a 7-3 win in the District 11 Class 4A baseball quarterfinals. He never considered turning the ball over to a teammate even after taking a line drive off his pitching hand in the bottom of the sixth.

Leon's workhorse outing lifted fifth-seeded Liberty (15-7 overall) into Friday's district semifinals. The Hurricanes will face top-seed Parkland (18-5), which rolled to a 10-2 win over No. 8 Freedom, in a 7 p.m. game at Hackett Park in Easton.

Liberty will have to win Friday to give Leon a chance to pitch another high school game. If Wednesday marked the end of his time as a Hurricanes pitcher, he produced a memorable conclusion.

When Liberty finished shaking hands with the Zephyrs (16-6), Leon ran toward the dugout calling for ice. His right hand began to swell as soon as a line drive from Whitehall catcher Ryan Bonshak smashed into him. After the game, stitch marks were visible where the baseball struck Leon's hand.

"I guess he hit it pretty hard," Leon said with a laugh.

Liberty coach Andy Pitsilos wasn't in a joking mood after seeing his ace get drilled. Leon was dazed at first after Bonshak's liner hit him, but he recovered to find the ball. He then fired a wild throw to first for an error before calling for a trainer.

After he was examined, Leon was given the chance to test his hand with a couple of warm-up pitches. The first one sailed high, forcing catcher Abner Santana to leap from his crouch to catch it. Leon's second warm-up pitch hit Santana's mitt, and he assured Liberty's coaches and medical staff he could continue.
