(Philadelphia, PA) Innovative treatments for heart failure are lacking, leaving the nearly six million Americans who suffer from the condition with little hope for a cure. But thanks to an $11.5-million Program Project Grant (PPG) from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), scientists at Temple University School of Medicine are now set to further their investigation of key molecular mechanisms in heart failure, an effort that is expected to lead to the development of new heart therapies.

The Principal Investigator on the new PPG award is Dr. Walter J. Koch, PhD, The William Wikoff Smith Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology, and Director of the Center for Translational Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM). Dr. Koch is working alongside two other Temple researchers on the Program Project Grant Dr. Steven R. Houser, PhD, FAHA, Senior Associate Dean for Research, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology, and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Center at TUSM; and Dr. Arthur M. Feldman, MD, PhD, Executive Dean of TUSM, and Chief Academic Officer of Temple University Health System.

Each of the scientists is leading a specific project for the grant, with all three projects being natural outgrowths of ongoing research in their individual laboratories. The three projects focus on signaling pathways implicated in cardiac injury and repair, and they likely intersect in heart failure pathology, underscoring the significance of the collaborative research effort.

"The Program Project Grant give us the opportunity to develop novel approaches to treat ischemic heart disease," explained Dr. Houser. "Our goal will be to have new therapeutics ready for patients through our PPG."

The new award represents the second round of PPG funding for the three researchers. Over the course of their previous funding cycle, Drs. Feldman, Houser, and Koch developed highly integrated research programs aimed at better understanding the signaling molecules involved in heart failure. Their preliminary research resulted in the identification of the three signaling pathways that the researchers are now investigating for the second PPG. Those pathways center on an enzyme known as G-protein coupled receptor kinase 5 (GRK5) and on molecules known as arginine vasopressin (AVP) type 1A receptors and transient receptor potential (TRP) channels.

GRK5 forms the basis of Dr. Koch's portion of the PPG. In earlier work, he and colleagues found that the enzyme, which normally resides in the cytoplasm of heart cells, can be transported into the heart cell nucleus. There, in the cockpit of the cell, GRK5 takes control over the activity of certain genes. Its manipulations ultimately cause heart cells to increase in size, creating a condition known as hypertrophy, which is a central feature of heart failure.

Dr. Feldman's PPG research explores the role of AVP type 1A receptors in cardiac injury. In previous work in mice, Feldman's team found that the density of AVP receptors increases in the heart following cardiac injury. The change in receptor expression was associated with diminished heart function. In the next steps of investigation, Feldman hopes to elucidate the mechanism underlying that association.

Air-Vid Takes Off With Worldwide Directory of Drone and UAV Pilots, the Community Includes More Than 500 UAV Pilots …

Ontario, Canada (PRWEB) May 21, 2014

Aerial pilot directory Air-Vid is announcing the milestone of their 500th drone pilot to join its community, now encompassing UAV pilots from over 44 countries.

Air-Vid is a web-based community of remote aerial pilots, built with both pilots and anyone looking to hire an aerial photographer in mind. UAV pilots can upload their contact information, location, photos and demo reels, while anyone who needs aerial video, stills or surveys can easily search the directory to connect with a pilot whose UAV flying capabilities meet their needs. The site benefits both parties, helping pilots and customers to connect their businesses.

Its an easy process to find a videographer, said Air-Vid Chief Marketing Officer George Gooderham. Its like a matchmaker service.

No transactions are done on the site; pilots manage the transactions with their customers after getting connected through Air-Vid.

Pilots in the Air-Vid community range from hobbyists to professionals who have worked on Hollywood films among them are Drone Dudes, whose clients include Nike and GoPro. Customers can search pilots based on the skill level theyre looking for, whether theyre looking for someone to fly over an event, rescue mission, news story or even a wedding. Air-Vid is a one stop shop to find and compare companies from all over the world, said Eric Maloney, Head of Production at Drone Dudes. It will allow clients to quickly decipher who the real talented high-end guys are and who is just getting started.

Air-Vid pilots are capable of doing flights including: search and rescue, cinematography, mapping, roof inspections 3D Imaging and asset management.

The site, unlike any other drone community in existence, was founded by Patrick Egan, George Gooderham and David French, all self-described serial entrepreneurs wearing 400 hats.

Gooderham, an accomplished aerial photographer, had the idea to crowd-source a UAV pilot when his daughter went on a school trip to Italy.

Wouldnt it be cool if I could watch their outdoor concert in Rome from my home in Toronto? he said.

Tech Bytes: Remember to Include Smartphone When Spring Cleaning

Organizing your closets, shampooing your carpets and cleaning out junk drawers are probably the tasks that come to mind when making your spring cleaning to-do list. However, there are some everyday items that probably get overlooked: your smartphone and tablet.

Want to tidy up your smartphone? Here are some tips from Verizons Mark Moesner with a highlight look at the new 4G LTE Samsung Galaxy S 5 and the HTC One (M8).

Use it or lose it: If you havent used an app in six months, ditch it. Once youve cleared your device of unused apps, use folders to categorize and file whats left. Put your airline and bus route apps in a travel folder, fitness tracker and nutrition scanner in health, reservation and restaurant review apps in food, file all games together, and so on.

Back up everything: Back up important information and memories such as photos, music, text messages and call logs to keep them safe and secure, especially if you happen to someday lose your device. Tools like Verizon Cloud sync and save digital files in the cloud, allowing you to access your info whenever you need it from any compatible device. Those on the MORE Everything plan get 25 GB of Cloud storage per device.

Go paperless: If your goal is to go paperless, you can do so through apps like Shoeboxed that scan and upload receipts or Manilla to access all online banking accounts in one place.

Protect passwords: Chances are you have to remember at least a dozen passwords every day from social media accounts to your cloud storage solution. Apps like 1password or PasswordBox keep all your passwords in one secure place, so youll never have to click that button again.

Keep it clean: A little microfiber cloth goes a long way in keeping your device screen free and clear. Dont forget display protectors, anti-glare packs and outer cases. There are great choices in cases from rugged styles to silicone for both smartphones and tablets.

'No recollection' of Dotcom cash: Banks

John Banks.

On the fourth day of Banks' trial on a charge of filing a false electoral return, the High Court at Auckland is hearing an audio recording of a June 2012 police interview with Banks at his lawyer's chambers.

When asked about the donations, he said: SkyCity no recollection of receiving the donation. Mega Upload [Mr Dotcom], no actual knowledge of the donation since before the publicity.

Banks is defending a charge of filing a false electoral return in 2010 where he allegedly knowingly received political donations from Mr Dotcom and SkyCity that were recorded as anonymous.

The allegations against relate to two $25,000 donations from Megastuff Ltd on Mr Dotcom's behalf in June 2010 and $15,000 from SkyCity in May that year.

We received legal advice back in 2007 about the whole use of donations. I recall the legal advice was we would set up a secret trust or we could do it in good faith in the spirit of the law, which we did and I did every campaign since 2001, Banks said.

Banks said that in 2010, he asked hundreds of people for money and the campaign received about 500 cheques.

When asked about the campaign team's record-keeping, Banks said he never asked to see any records.

He signed the electoral return on the basis that campaign treasurer Lance Hutchison had filled it out to the best of his knowledge.

Banks said he did no cross-referencing or checking the donations against the return as he had confidence in Mr Hutchison.

App helps you find a lookalike for Fido

By Doug Gross, CNN

The PetMatch app uses patented image-recognition technology to find you a pet that looks like one in a photo you share.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- Are you missing a beloved four-legged friend from the past? Or, on a far sillier note, would you like your very own Grumpy Cat or Doge?

A new app aims to help you find a lookalike for your departed or dream pet by using photo-matching software to find the closest match in your area.

PetMatch lets you upload a picture of a dog or cat, or use one from its gallery. It then tries to find you a pet available for adoption that is the closest possible match to the one you posted.

The app is from startup Superfish and uses its patented image-recognition technology. It scans your photo, registering details like the shape of an animal's mouth, the distance between its eyes, its coloring and its general size and shape.

This PetMatch search produced similar-looking cats to the one in the upper left.

Users can share their own photos or ones from the Web, like this shot of Grumpy Cat.

It then performs a similar search on PetFinder, a database with photos of hundreds of thousands of animals up for adoption throughout the United States, and gives you the closest overall matches, as well as the closest ones in your area.

Senate okays establishment of alternative medicine college

A bill for an act to establish the College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Nigeria, passed second reading in the senate on Thursday.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Clever Ikisipo (Bayelsa East) recommended a take-off grant of N3.9bn that will cover consultancy, capital costs, personnel emoluments, and cost of specialized training for staff, among others.

Presenting the lead debate on the floor of the senate, Ikisipo noted that the bill was aimed at providing constitutional backing for the Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, created as an agency under the Federal Ministry of Health in 2007.

He explained that ensuring legislative backing for the college would ultimately complement federal governments efforts at encouraging alternative medicine practice which had already been embraced by medical practitioners in most Europe, Asian and African countries.

The college he said was saddled with the responsibility of training and retraining alternative medicine practitioners in the health care delivery services.

He also said the institution will carry out clinical and research as well as provide an alternative method of treating ailments.

The senator said, Complimentary and Alternative Medicine is the branch of medicine whose philosophy is grounded in the enhancement of the bodys own healing power through the use of natural means.

This branch of medicine is coming to the forefront of health care in most Asian countries, African countries, European countries and America today, thus having the effect of a healthier and stronger society and enhancing our very valuable human resources.

Since its establishment in 2007, he said the college had done research into various remedies that can cure major diseases like cancer, cholera, VVF, as well as advanced management and cure of HIV/AIDS.

Ikisipo however, regretted that the college had been producing remedies for ailments over the years without the proper legislative framework necessary for its development and progress.
