Free lunch program for kids starting in North Liberty

By Gregg Hennigan, The Gazette

NORTH LIBERTY A community organization is stepping up to give North Liberty children a good lunch and fun activities during summer break.

The North Liberty Unity Coalition is starting a free summer lunch program Mondays through Fridays from June 9 through Aug. 18.

I think there are children in the community who probably will not have a good lunch if this isnt provided, and I just think thats very important for kids to have that, said North Liberty Unity Coalition member Judy McRoberts.

Her organization started in 2005 with a mission to enhance the health and well-being of North Liberty children, families and neighborhoods.

Theyve kicked around the idea of a summer lunch program for some years, but when they inquired with the federal government about getting funding as similar programs in other local communities do, they were told North Libertys demographics did not meet guidelines.

A few months ago they discussed it again and decided to do it without government funding because they felt the need was there. There are about 550 North Liberty children who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch at their schools, according to the North Liberty Unity Coalition.

The only requirement for the program, however, is participants be 18 years old or younger.

We dont want it to feel like a charity program, said Tracey Mulcahey, a Unity Coalition member and North Libertys assistant city administrator. We want it to feel like a summer program that lunch is just a bonus of.

In that regard, an hour of supervised recreational activities will follow the 30-minute lunch, which will start at 11:30 a.m.

Liberty Twp. hires code enforcement officer

LIBERTY TWP.

Trustees here this week enacted two changes aimed at accomodating township zonings increased workload.

Liberty approved the hire of Amanda Cramer, of Oxford, as full-time code enforcement officer at $17 per hour effective May 27 and contingent upon successful completion of a background check, physical and drug testing.

Cramer, who was one of 19 to apply for the position, earned a bachelors degree of urban planning from University of Cincinnati.

Under supervision of the director of planning and zoning and the senior planner, the code enforcement officer conducts field inspections of new and existing construction and properties to ensure compliance with the townships zoning resolution and property maintenance code.

Liberty Twp. employed a code enforcement officer from December 2009 to November 2010, but that employee left to become the director of planning and zoning for a city in northeast Ohio, according to township officials.

The township decided not to replace him immediately and redistributed his workload to both Jonathan West, Liberty Twp.s director of planning and zoning, and Andrew Meyer, its senior planner, according to Caroline McKinney, the townships spokeswoman.

With the economy picking back up and our permit activity increasing along with the significant projects in Liberty Township requiring more staff resources, the workload is such that we need a third full-time person in the planning and zoning department to assist us, McKinney said.

Township trustees also voted May 20 to make earlier the submittal deadline for Liberty Twp. Zoning Commission cases for the remainder of the year. For each zoning case, the township had required submittal three Fridays before each commission meeting to allow for public notice two Thursdays in advance of each meeting. That now moves to four Fridays in advance.

We requested the change because of the number of cases and the cases always coming in on the Friday deadline, said Jonathan West, the townships director of planning and zoning. We wanted the extra week to review, receive revisions and coordinate with other agencies as needed.

Liberty High School senior to make history during graduation

BAKERSFIELD, CA -- Hanging around Liberty High School senior Dawn Albritton's neck are 20 medals she received for swimming and bowling competitions.

"This is from the Santa Anita Unified Swim meet," says Dawn as she lifts one up.

She earned her medals during high school. But one of her biggest accomplishments may come when she steps on the Liberty High School campus for the last time as a student.

"I've heard from friends of mine, well senior friends that they've never had a graduation speaker that was special ed. And so I thought I can make history," said Dawn.

School officials say students must have at least a 3.0 GPA to interview for a potential spot as a speaker. The student must present their speech in front of a panel that includes a counselor, an administrator and two teachers. The three highest scorers get to speak at graduation. Dawn was chosen as one of the speakers.

According to Liberty High School staff, Dawn is the first special education student to deliver a commencement speech at the high school.

"I'm so proud of her. It seems like no matter what she tries, she struggles really hard but she succeeds," said Dawn's grandmother, Patricia White.

White has been raising dawn since she was 6.

"There's so many things anybody can't do. You have to look at what you can do," said White.

In June, Dawn was chosen to compete in a national Special Olympics competition in New Jersey.

Libertarian challenges Harris for House seat

A A

A Vancouver commercial airline pilot with strong opinions on federal education mandates and genetically modified foods is running to unseat 17th District state Rep. Paul Harris, R-Vancouver.

Chris Rockhold, 43, who identifies as a Libertarian, said he would like to see the state opt out of Common Core standards, which lay out what students at each grade level should learn in mathematics and language arts. The standards have been adopted by 45 states and are slated to be fully implemented in Washington next school year.

So many laws come down from the federal government and they all have strings attached, he said.

If elected, Rockhold also said he would push for food labels on genetically modified organisms.

It sounds corny when you say you want to change the world, but thats kind of why I wanted to run, Rockhold said.

Harris voting record, Rockhold said, is too often aligned with that of Democrats.

I think people go up there (to Olympia) wanting to do good things, then they go up there and get entrenched and say this is how you have to compromise your principles, Rockhold said. Im not concerned about how Ill look within the system. Im more concerned with how to improve liberty and how I can improve the state of Washington.

Rockhold, who is married with one son, is a pilot with Empire Airlines. He attended both South Puget Sound Community College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

He would like to see Obamacare repealed and blasts his opponent for voting for measures that he believes helped pave the way for the health exchange.
