More Than Meets The Eye: NASA Scientists Listen To Data

Kasha Patel, NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center

Robert Alexander spends parts of his day listening to a soft white noise, similar to water falling on the outside of a house during a rainstorm. Every once in a while, he hears an anomalous sound and marks the corresponding time in the audio file. Alexander is listening to the suns magnetic field and marking potential areas of interest. After only ten minutes, he has listened to one months worth of data.

Alexander is a PhD candidate in design science at the University of Michigan. He is a sonification specialist who trains heliophysicists at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, to pick out subtle differences by listening to satellite data instead of looking at it.

Sonification is the process of displaying any type of data or measurement as sound, such as the beep from a heart rate monitor measuring a persons pulse, a door bell ringing every time a person enters a room, or, in this case, explosions indicating large events occurring on the sun. In certain cases, scientists can use their ears instead of their eyes to process data more rapidly and to detect more details than through visual analysis. A paper on the effectiveness of sonification in analyzing data from NASA satellites was published in the July issue of Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics.

NASA produces a vast amount of data from its satellites. Exploring such large quantities of data can be difficult, said Alexander. Sonification offers a promising supplement to standard visual analysis techniques.

LISTENING TO SPACE

Alexanders focus is on improving and quantifying the success of these techniques. The team created audio clips from the data and shared them with researchers. While the original data from the Wind satellite was not in audio file format, the satellite records electromagnetic fluctuations that can be converted directly to audio samples. Alexander and his team used custom written computer algorithms to convert those electromagnetic frequencies into sound. Listen to the following multimedia clips to hear the sounds of space.

PROCESSING AN OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF DATA

Alexanders focus is on using clips like these to quantify and improve sonification techniques in order to speed up access to the incredible amounts of data provided by space satellites. For example, he works with space scientist Robert Wicks at NASA Goddard to analyze the high-resolution observations of the sun. Wicks studies the constant stream of particles from our closest star, known as the solar wind a wind that can cause space weather effects that interfere with human technology near Earth. The team uses data from NASAs Wind satellite. Launched in 1994, Wind orbits a point in between Earth and the sun, constantly observing the temperature, density, speed and the magnetic field of the solar wind as it rushes past.

Wicks analyzes changes in Winds magnetic field data. Such data not only carries information about the solar wind, but understanding such changes better might help give a forewarning of problematic space weather that can affect satellites near Earth. The Wind satellite also provides an abundance of magnetometer data points, as the satellite measures the magnetic field 11 times per second. Such incredible amounts of information are beneficial but only if all the data can be analyzed.

Red Amnesia (Chuangru zhe): Venice Review

Biennale di Venezia

Qin Hao, Lu Zhong and Feng Yuanzheng in "Red Amnesia"

A slow-starter that evolves into a haunting account of damages endured, inflicted and forgotten

Venice Film Festival (Competition; also in Toronto festival)

Lu Zhong, Shi Liu, Feng Yuanzheng, Qin Hao, Amanda Qin

Wang Xiaoshuai

VENICE As the title suggests, Red Amnesia considers the selective memory that erases past stains as contemporary China continues its frantic sprint to become a social and economic superpower. Wang Xiaoshuai's latest is somewhat bipolar, beginning as an unhurried mystery about the harassment of an elderly widow before abruptly switching gears more than halfway through to take an unsentimental plunge into the past. Combining elements of melodrama and thriller with a strong political subtext, this is a challenging work that guards its secrets closely but builds cumulative power.

The film represents a return to complex territory for the Sixth Generation director who first turned heads with the underground feature The Days in 1993 and then had his biggest international breakthrough with the neorealist homage Beijing Bicycle in 2001. Wang considers the new film the completion of a trilogy about the legacy of past social and political movements, following Shanghai Dreams and 11 Flowers.

The story's central character is the stubborn, elderlyDeng, played with cantankerous charm and fragility by stage veteran Lu Zhong. Her complaints of receiving anonymous phone calls are initially dismissed by doctors and by her grown children as the product of an aging mind.

Determined to remain useful and reluctant to give up her role as the traditional caregiver, she barges uninvited and without warning into the home of her gay son Bing (Qin Hao) to cook for him, although she makes no secret of her disapproval of the way he lives his life. The casual establishment of his relationship with a male lover, and Deng's refusal even to acknowledge the other man's presence, are beautifully handled. Time spent with her elder son, Jun (Feng Yuanzheng), is made equally tense by the irritation of Deng's daughter-in-law (Amanda Qin), sparked by the old woman's intrusive manner.

How Boston Red Sox Will Solve Murky Future at Third Base

The Boston Red Sox have plenty of holes to fill for 2015, but one of their most glaring points of weakness is at third base.

The Red Sox headed into 2014 with a reasonable amalgamation of talent at the hot corner. Will Middlebrooks was just a year removed from a promising 2012 campaign. Garin Cecchini looked poised to break into the majors. And capable backups like Jonathan Herrera and Brock Holt figured to provide extra depth should something go awry.

However, Red Sox third basemen have hit just .207/.267/.297 with eight homers this yeara startling lack of production from a group that includes Middlebrooks, Holt and Xander Bogaerts.

Its obvious that the Red Sox need to address their lack of front-end starting pitching talent in the offseason, and that is indeed the team's biggest need. Yet Boston will also need to make a decision when it comes to third base, and while there are no shortage of options before them, there's no clear-cut answer, either.

The Red Sox might choose to try and solve their third base vacancy internally. They might look to the free-agent market for help. Or, they could try and swing a trade.

A deeper look at these various options shows that while the Sox have plenty of room to get creative, it's likely going to be difficult to fix third base without allocating substantial resources.

Will Middlebrooks

Few Red Sox have had as disappointing a 2014 campaign as Middlebrooks. Looking to cement himself as Boston's third baseman of the present and future, Middlebrooks has instead cast doubt on his role as an everyday MLB player.

In an injury-shortened year that's seen him reach just 179 PA in the majors, Middlebrooks is hitting .183/.251/.268 with a 29.6 strikeout percentage and just two home runs. The lack of power from Middlebrooks is especially concerning, as that was largely his calling card up until this season.
