The two pleaded guilty as part of a deal struck with prosecutors from the office of Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara. They had been scheduled to go on trial on Sept. 22.
US authorities shut down Silk Road last year, though a new version bearing the same name was launched soon thereafter. The man accused of creating and operating Silk Road using the alias "Dread Pirate Roberts," Ross William Ulbricht, is facing separate charges and is scheduled for trial in November.
Mr Shrem stepped down from his post as vice chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation, a trade group, soon after his arrest in January. He was previously the chief executive of BitInstant, a Bitcoin exchange company.
Prosecutors said Mr Faiella, 54, operated an underground Bitcoin exchange on Silk Road under the name "BTCKing," providing currency for users engaged in illicit drug trafficking.
Mr Shrem processed transactions for Mr Faiella through BitInstant despite knowing the Bitcoin would eventually find their way to Silk Road, where the funds would be used for drugs, he said in court.
Both men agreed to forfeit $950,000 to the government as part of their plea deals.
"Robert Faiella and Charlie Shrem opted to travel down a crooked path running an illegal money transmitting business that catered to criminals bent on trafficking narcotics on the dark web drug site, Silk Road," Bharara said in a statement.

Reddits r/Bitcoin is a popular forum where BTC enthusiasts shared news links and anti-establishment jokes. The site was so influential among the community that a recent book about Bitcoin calledThe Anatomy of a Money-like Informational Commodity discussed the viability of using the number of registered members of the forum as a way to gauge the market sentiment.
One of the most upvoted post on the channel yesterday is one entitled Worst Night of My Life, in which a Bitociner recounted how his family responded after they discovered that his parents house broken into with the safe stolen by the burglars.
The thieves simply threw a rock through his (the authors fathers) back sliding glass window, rummaged around in the house until they found the safe and dom hemingwayd it right off of the foundation it was bolted onto. Inside of his safe was an uncommonly large number of bitcoins (he is an early adopter) on a non password protected paper wallet.
For the uninitiated, a paper wallet is an offline mechanism for storing bitcoins. Unlike online wallets, sometimes referred to hot wallets, paper wallet is a form of cold storage, which is deemed immune to hacking, the cause of most of Bitcoin heists so far. However, despite being considered one of the safest ways to store bitcoins, paper wallet is far from foolproof.
Although the family had backed up the paper wallets and safe-kept them in the local bank, because the burglary took place at night, they had to wait until the next day before they could retrieve their backups and transfer the coins away. The author didnt reveal the specific amount, but he suggested that the amount was significant enough, saying that his father was an early adopter. They were so anxious that they stayed up the entire night.
The robbers had 9 hours to crack into it, figure out what the hell they were looking at (assuming he wasnt explicitly targeted) and then transfer the bitcoins off into their own address. We were both sweating bullets and did not sleep at all.
Fortunately, the thieves were neither aware of or tech-savvy enough to figure out what they laid their hands on. In the end, crisis averted and life back to normal. Am I then only one that saw the irony?
With Bitcoin, you can be your own bank this is many Bitcoiners belief as well as one of the central value propositions of Bitcoin as a currency. It carries two layers of meanings. First, Bitcoin allows people to transmit value among each other without involving a centralized authority and from any places in the world irrespective of jurisdictions and geographies; second, Bitcoin is supposed to allow people to store it secure enough so they never needed to go to a bank. This gives rise to the rather fanatic-sounding prediction of death of traditional banks. Now, it appears that banks offered Bitcoin a measure of security that they cannot get from anywhere else.
It is not only individual users, Coinbase, one of the most reputed Bitcoin companies, also used banks for the same purpose. According to the company: we can safely move about 90% of those funds offline. We do this by taking the sensitive data that would normally reside on our servers (the private keys which represent the actual bitcoins) and moving it to USB sticks and paper backups. We then take these to a safe deposit box at an actual bank.
Despite the cryptography that Bitcoin is based on, there are more ways than you can imagine to breach its security. It is vulnerable to hacking, as indicated by many heists indicated; more importantly, it is vulnerable to human foibles if you are the kind of people who often feel the need to reset your passwords, then you are most likely to find Bitcoin security challenging. In the world of Bitcoin, private key is the only link between you and your money. Unlike losing your bankcard, there is no authority to go to after you lose it Bitcoin is made for the most individualistic and fastidious with a determination of self-reliance. Failing that, you will have to settle with online wallet service, which are centralized and necessitates a certain degree of trust from you. But dont think that is the only risk. Lack of legal recognition means loss of bitcoin doesnt receive the same level of legal protection as other properties do. A thief can kidnap and torture for the private keys. Even in a world there were no such hideous crime, an almost insurmountable obstacle that would prevent Bitcoin from being adopted by the majority is that most of us are just not organized enough.

Bitcoin, The Cryptography-based Currency Continues To Rely On Banks For Security
San Diego startup Skylit Medical is developing a phototherapy device for private home use to treat conditions like psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo.Its one of thosenecessitys the mother of inventionish stories founder Martyn Grosshimself has eczema and psoriasis.
We are a frustrated group, because this is an inflammatory condition for which there is no cure so we spend $10 billion per year to solve this problem, Gross said, adding that most of these dollars go to systemic and biologic drugs, which are costly out-of-pocket for patients.
Indeed, onecommon therapy for these autoimmune skin conditions is UVB therapy but the problem for many patients, Grosssaid, is that it takes a significant time investment to regularly go to a phototherapy clinic.
Skylits concept is todevelop its handheld device, setting up an out-of-pocket subscription service for patients to essentially lease it and use it at home. The patient would receive a prescription from a dermatologist, and then the doctor-programmed device would do the rest of the work. Itd turn on the UVB light in, say, 30-second increments whatever and whenever the doctor orders and then automatically shut off once the days sufficient therapy has been administered.
The goal is ultimately to build a camera into the device, so that the skin conditions progression can be tracked by a derm. In the near-term, the device will at least have WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities to transmit prescription data from the doc to the patient, Gross said.
Phototherapy has, by the way, a range of benefits for skin conditions, according to the National Eczema Association reducing itch, working as an anti-inflammatory agent, increasing vitamin D production and increasing bacteria-fighting systems in the skin. For psoriasis and even vitiligo, it shows similar benefits.
Skylit isnt the only device, it should be noted, that is working in the at-home phototherapy business. But thecompanys in the midst of a $2 million seedround, having raised about $150,000 by the end of July, according to a regulatory filing. Gross said it hopes to raise $3.4 million, however, in its Series A round.
The goal with the Skylit device was to make it as easy as possible, Gross said.

Last week, the travel world went into a frenzy over a little $22 device called the knee defender that caused quite the scuffle on a United Airlines flight. The plastic attachment clips onto the seat, and prevents the person sitting in front of you from reclining. It is banned by most U.S. carriers, yet a man tried to use it on a flight and really annoyed the woman in front of him. Words were exchanged, drinks were thrown, and eventually the plane was diverted to Chicago and the two offenders were taken off of the plane.
The knee defender is just one of the many obnoxious travel accessories on the market today. Weve gathered up a few others that will definitely drive your fellow passengers bonkers.
The B-Tourist was designed by graduates of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Israel, a program that clearly encourages anti-social behavior. We admit that the added privacy could be nice for sleeping, reading, or eating, but the entire accessory has some major flaws.
First, you have to loop it around the seat in front of you which is sure to p*ss off the person sitting there. Secondly, do you have to unhook the entire thing if someone gets up to go the bathroom? And finally, if the seat behind you has a TV on it, it would be blocked by your stupid tent.
Choosing to wear this contraption in public means that the person is either super confident or slightly unstable. So while other passengers on a plane would certainly be annoyed that you are wearing this Ostrich pillow and blocking their view of the window, chances are they wont say anything for fear of a backlash. If you are so tired that wearing this seems like a good idea, dont let us stand in your way.
This next accessory is for the organized traveler. However, unless you are moving into seat 16E, there is no reason why a flyer should need this much stuff on a plane.
We get itgerms are gross. And honestly, the trayGUARD is a decent idea. Still, it's sure to annoy your seatmate for one major reasonthey dont have one. When you pull this out and politely slip it on your tray, your neighbor will be reminded of how dirty their tray is. Theyll eat their peanuts while risking the flu, while you dine in your germ free bubble. Be prepared for some dirty looks.
Now things have gotten out of control. Have you ever put a slipcover on a couch? Its almost impossible. The fit is never right, and you can spend an hour just trying to get all of the corners and creases in the right place. We equate that frustrating experience to trying to fit a plane sheet to your seat while others are trying to board. The effort it takes to maneuver this unnecessary attachment while other people are trying to take their seat, will surely make you the most hated person on your flight. Aint nobody got time for that.

The Seattle Seahawks are favored to add another win to that record as a 5.5-point favorite at home against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.
Green Bay could be one of the NFC's best teams this season if Aaron Rodgers stays healthy, and it is difficult to pass up on 5.5 points. But Seattle is the league's best team and owns the best home field in the NFL, making them the pick at -5.5 in their home opener.
Odds Shark Computer Prediction: 33-21 Seattle
Seattle's defense was impenetrable in 2013, leading the NFL with the lowest total yards surrendered with 273.6 per game and scoring defense allowing only 14.4 points per game.
The Seahawks are tough to play against regardless of the venue, but they take their game to another level at home, where they are 17-1 SU and 13-5 ATS over their last 18 games. Seattle is 4-0 SU and ATS over its last four Week 1 home openers.
Green Bay is just 1-5 SU and ATS over its last six games as a road underdog. Since 2012, the Packers are 2-5 SU and 2-4-1 ATS against NFC West opponents.
Perhaps the biggest concern coming into this game for the Packers is Seattle's running game; Green Bay finished 25th in the league last season in rushing defense, and could have its share of trouble trying to contain Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch.

"The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know," says producer-director Steven E. Bram of the ancient mystical philosophy at the center of his documentary "Kabbalah Me."
Unfortunately, viewers may feel the same and not in an inspiring way after watching this elusive film, which tracks the filmmaker's spiritual reawakening following a kind of midlife crisis of faith.
After an entire journey, in which sports documentarian Bram tours Orthodox Jewish communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn and later Israel to unravel the mysteries of kabbalah and to find his own personal place amid it all we're left with little concrete understanding of this esoteric, Judaic-rooted discipline. That such celebrities as Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow have embraced it remains more of a topical touchstone than most anything else presented here.
Bram, who also narrates (and writes, with co-director Judah Lazarus and Adam Zucker), may be earnest in his desire for enlightenment. But his approach feels overly self-serving; too much "Me," not enough "Kabbalah." Perhaps the filmmaker should have spent more time behind the camera instead of front and center, as he observes a host of Jewish rituals and traditions and chats with rabbis, congregants, scholars and devout members of his extended family.
Bram also could have asked tougher, more specific questions of the featured kabbalists. Most of their responses or attempted explanations about the subject may prove far too airy-fairy or amorphous to satisfy the skeptical or empirically inclined.
As for Bram's patient wife, Miriam, who supports her husband's new religious fervency but resists jumping into the proverbial mikvah (Jewish ritual bath) herself, her story seems incomplete.
