SunGard Global Coder Cup Unveils an Unexpected Tool Against Financial Fraud

Winning Team Uses Artificial Intelligence to Help Strengthen Compliance in Financial Firms

September 25, 2014 - On September 12, 11 teams from seven countries met at Londons Emirates Stadium to participate in the final championship round of SunGards second annual Codeathon, the Global Coder Cup. The finalists were given 48 hours and a clear mission: to harness big data technology to create new compliance solutions for financial services firms.

First place was awarded to the team from Birmingham, Alabama, who created an advanced financial compliance and regulation application that uses Artificial Intelligence to predict and potentially prevent fraud. This was driven by creative use of multiple Artificial Intelligence technologies, including dynamic learning. In essence, Artificial Intelligence in the compliance space can help prevent compliance incidents, such as insider trading, but could be expanded more widely, said Anoop Nair, SunGard director of development and a member of the winning team, Foo Tomatons.

In an effort to support our customers with an increasingly sophisticated compliance environment, we gave our coders the challenge to use big data technology to attack real problems faced by chief compliance officers in financial institutions, said Steven Silberstein, SunGards chief technology officer. Our codeathons are an illustration of our commitment to invest in the core research and development of our technology, bringing talent from across the organization together to explore new creative solutions that have the potential to benefit our financial services customers. This also underscores SunGards approach to cross-pollinating development efforts through close collaboration and innovation.

The team from Cape Town, South Africa, won second place by creating a compliance tracker, a tool that attempts to support compliance officers by easily identifying potential non-compliant trades through advanced visualization. Third place was awarded to the Kari Ra team from Christchurch, New Zealand, who created an application to investigate various people and organizations and assess suitability for business.

The final championship, sponsored by Intel, included a judging panel consisting of SunGards chief technology officer, thought leaders and industry experts from Intel and Blackstone.

Out of the 115 teams that participated in the first round of the Global Coder Cup in June, the best teams from each region North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, India and Africa were selected to compete in the in-person final championship round at an inspiring venue, home of the Arsenal Football Club.

Last year the winning team of the 425 participants created a risk solution for corporate actions, using new visualization tools that provide the user with a more intuitive and holistic view of risk.

Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group Canada Provides Further Support to the Royal Canadian Air Force's CC130 Fleet

Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group Canada has been subcontracted by Cascade Aerospace in relation to the Royal Canadian Air Forces (RCAFs) CC130 Avionics Optimised Weapons System Management (AVS OWSM) program.

The AVS OWSM program is one of three contracts planned by Canada's Department of National Defence (DND) to support the RCAF's CC130 Hercules legacy transport fleet. The Primary Air Vehicle (PAV) OWSM Program, on which Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group Canada is also the engineering subcontractor, has been underway since 2006.

The AVS OWSM program extends the reach for overall CC130 aircraft lifecycle management, and the contract with Cascade Aerospace will extend until 2016 with options for additional tranches.

Steve Fitz-Gerald, CEO of Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group, comments: The CC130 AVS OWSM subcontract win solidifies the roles of Cascade Aerospace and Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group Canada in supporting the legacy RCAF CC130 fleet.

In addition to their military role, the RCAFs CC130E/H fleet of aircraft are also used for Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, which are of great importance in a country the size of Canada and which is sparsely populated in the North.

Fitz-Gerald continues: I am thrilled that Marshalls engineering expertise and project management capabilities will be contributing to the reliability and high availability of these aircraft.

Marshalls relationship with the C-130 platform and its OEM, Lockheed Martin, dates back to the early 1960s. The company is presently working with the air forces of 10 countries and, in addition to standard MRO and deeper maintenance work, Marshall has performed more than 1,500 modifications and upgrades for over 35 C-130 military and civil operators worldwide.

Exclusive: New figures reveal massive decline in religious affiliation

In five decades, the number of people with no religion in Britain has grown from just 3 per cent of the population to nearly half, according to a new survey. Among adults aged under 25, nearly two-thirds define themselves as "nones", or people with no religious affiliation.

The findings present an enormous challenge for the churches over how they make faith appealing to young people, in a world where many young will be appalled at how the male-dominated church leadership has made discrimination against women and homosexuals a defining feature of orthodox mission.

If the trends continue, Methodists will be extinct in a few decades and the Church of England also faces massive decline by the end of the century.

Only the Catholics are currently holding up, along with some minority faiths, in the mass move towards atheism and agnosticism in Britain.

Ben Clements of British Religion in Numbershas analysed the latest data from the first stage of the 2015 British Election Study, a survey of more than 20,000 people by a team of academics from Manchester, Oxford and Nottingham universities.

His results, posted on the British Religion in Numbers website, make for gloomy reading for most churches in the UK.

According to the results, nearly half the population, 44.7 per cent, now do not belong to any religion at all. Nearly a third identify as Church of England or Anglican and nearly one in ten as Catholic. Just 1.6 per cent identify as Muslim. Among those aged 18-24, just 14.2 per cent identify as Anglican, 8.5 per cent as Catholic and 11 per cent as other religion. Only among the over 65s are the numbers of Anglicans holding up, at 46.4 per cent.

The average age is highest for Anglicans, at 53.7 years, and lowest for those with no religion, 43.3 years, or a non-Christian faith, 42.2 years.

Clements reportsthat over the five decades from 1963, when the British Election Study began, to this summer, the major features are the resilience of Catholicism and a decline in Anglicanism and other Christian traditions. He also found a significant increase in those affiliated to minority faiths and the growth in what have become known as the "religious nones".

In 1963, Anglicans made up 64.5 per cent of those questioned, compared to 31.1 per cent this year. Other Christian denominations also declined from 23.1 per cent to 7.6 per cent, while other faiths grew from 0.6 per cent to 7.5 per cent and Catholics also grew from 8.6 per cent to 9.1 per cent.
