Nutrition key to profitability

THE personal touch is what puts Western Livestock Nutrition operators Rob Thallon and Belinda McLeish ahead of the game for Longreach grazier Paul McClymont.

Their animal nutrition business, which comes with personalised service and advice, is a welcome face on the scene for himself and other graziers seeking to make the best feeding choices possible.

"It's handy having them right here," Mr McClymont said. "I was buying my feed from Charters Towers but now it's easy to organise at this end, especially if you're like me and don't have storage for a lot of feed on the place."

The pair took over the Longreach-based business from Phillip Avery in March this year and have been busy putting their own brand on it.

"I had been doing private consulting with Pip's clients, and the opportunity came to go into business with Rob and make it our own," Belinda said.

They met while studying at the University of Queensland's Gatton campus a decade ago.

Belinda undertook an agricultural science degree and then went to work for a number of stock feed companies in northern NSW and Queensland, gaining experience in the field, while Rob followed up his animal production course with a degree in agribusiness at Marcus Oldham College in Victoria.

They say nutrition is fast becoming recognised as an important tool to build profitability, as evidenced by their client base of 40 and climbing.

While their clientele is mostly local at this stage, covering a radius of 300km around Longreach, they also have customers at Cloncurry and Croydon and aim to distribute their products all over Queensland.

The business prides itself on being the region's supplementing specialists, providing a large range to suit varied requirements, including customised dry lick, production mixes, grain mixes and blocks, which are all manufactured in Townsville and distributed from there.
