Liberty woman warns public about phone scam

A Liberty couple said quick thinking helped save them from a phone scam and they want to spread the word to warn others.

Nancy and Carlos Dorrel said scammers were trying to get them to wire about $1,500, using a ploy that played on their emotions.

"It was a young lady speaking. She said it was my granddaughter and she said, 'I want this to be kept a secret, Grandma, just between you and me,'" she said. "She said, 'I had a wreck last night.'"

Nancy Dorrel said the caller said she needed money to help keep the crash off her record.

She said something about the call didn't seem right, so she got hold of her granddaughter on another line. She said her granddaughter pointed out that the caller never used her name and said that they were probably the targets of a scam.

Nancy Dorrel said she hung up the phone as soon as she realized it wasn't legitimate.

The Federal Trade Commission said to help prevent becoming a victim of a scam like this, people should be wary of calls from unknown people or area codes. They said never give money or personal information over the phone and report any questionable calls to law enforcement.

Nancy Dorrel said she hopes this doesn't happen to her or anyone else again.

"I was upset, very much. We'd just about been taken. It was too convincing," she said. "They had everything figured out, exactly how to hit your heart strings to help your granddaughter."
