Coco Reef wins Caribbean’s Leading Hotel award

Story Created: Jan 7, 2014 at 10:22 PM ECT

Story Updated: Jan 7, 2014 at 10:22 PM ECT

FOR the tenth year running, Coco Reef Resort & Spa has won the Caribbeans Leading Hotel category in the World Travel Awards (WTA). The hotel faced competition from 17 other properties in the region including the Four Seasons Resort in Nevis, Sandy Lane in Barbados and Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort which is in Antigua. The President and founder of the WTA, Graham Cooke, says, Coco Reef Resort & Spa has done it again! Taking the title of Caribbeans Leading Hotel for the tenth successive year, in a run of success dating back to 2004. Our voters know something special when they see it. It gives me particular pleasure to present this award to my close friend John Jefferis, owner of the resort. Not only has he worked closely with World Travel Awards over the past decade, but he is also one of the true pioneers in Caribbean tourism. We wish him every success for the future. The WTA celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and is described by the Wall Street Journal as the Oscars of the travel industry. It aims to celebrate those companies, organisations and brands that are pushing the boundaries of industry excellence in product and service. The winners are chosen via online voting generated by a year-long communications campaign that encourages global participation. The votes come from qualified executives working within travel and tourism as well as the consumer travel buyer. Its tremendously rewarding to reach this milestone of ten straight wins for Coco Reef Tobago, says Jefferis. Although I continue to invest millions of dollars in the resort every year, our guests clearly indicate that our success is due to the dedication, professionalism and genuine friendliness of the wonderful management and staff. At the Coco Reef Resort in Tobago, they consistently exceed our guests expectations with regards to service and providing an unforgettable experience. Jefferis developed Coco Reef in Tobago 18 years ago. The property, which has 150 rooms and suites, is situated on its own private beach surrounded by 10 acres of beautifully manicured tropical gardens. Celebrity guests who have stayed at the hotel include Sylvester Stallone, Rod Stewart and Diana Ross.

Travel in 2014: World events past and future put spotlight on Sochi, Brazil, Berlin, Sarajevo

The Olympics, the World Cup and commemorations of World War I, D-Day and the fall of the Berlin Wall are some of the events that will spotlight destinations like Sochi, Brazil, Sarajevo, Normandy and Berlin in 2014.

Elsewhere abroad, a potentially game-changing high-speed rail service has just launched linking Paris and Barcelona. Some travellers may now prefer the train over a plane, with the train ride cut in half to just over six hours between the two cities.

In the U.S., St. Louis marks the 250th anniversary of its Feb. 15, 1764 founding with celebrations in February including a reenactment, parties and a music festival. Other events are planned throughout the year.

Harry Potter fans will have a new reason to visit Florida next summer when the Universal Orlando theme park opens a new area with attractions inspired by the books' fictional scenes in Diagon Alley and London. A train called the Hogwarts Express will take visitors back and forth between the new Potter attractions including a restaurant called the Leaky Cauldron and Universal's existing Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Universal also plans an 1,800-room 1960s-themed resort and eight new restaurants at the CityWalk dining area for 2014.

Nearby, Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., will open a new family coaster, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, in the spring.

OLYMPICS AND WORLD CUP

The Winter Olympics, Feb. 7-23, take place in Sochi, a Russian Black Sea resort that's one of the least-known Olympic destinations in years. The indoor events will be held in ice arenas on the coast, while skiing and snowboarding are in the Caucasus Mountains 30 miles (50 kilometres) inland. With its subtropical climate and lush greenery, the coastal area of Sochi has long been a popular destination; some elaborate worker resorts from the Stalinist era remain, and new winter resorts are under construction.

The World Cup soccer games, June 12-July 13, will be held in 12 cities in Brazil: Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Cuaiaba, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Sao Paulo. The most exotic destination, Manaus, a steamy city in the Amazon jungle, may also be the most controversial: England soccer coach Roy Hodgson called it "the place ideally to avoid," while the London tabloid the Mirror called it a "crime-ridden hell-hole." But loads of soccer fans are likely to travel there despite the bad press to attend some of the tournament's top matches, including England-Italy and Portugal-U.S. The city is also a gateway to Amazon tourism, with Manaus-based operators offering boat trips and tours into the jungle.

REMEMBERING WAR

The summer of 2014 marks a century since World War I was triggered by the June 28, 1914 assassination of the Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, now the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Events are planned across Europe to commemorate the centenary http://www.1914.org and some U.S. tour operators like Road Scholar are offering itineraries visiting places connected to the war. Famous battlefields include Verdun, France; Gallipoli, Turkey, and Western Belgium, where red poppies still bloom in Flanders Fields, a battlefield immortalized in the famous poem: "In Flanders Fields the poppies blow/Between the crosses, row on row."

Brisbane named the country’s hippest city by Lonely Planet Australia travel guide

ABC Bartender Lachlan Thompson serves boutique beers at the popular Archive bar in West End, Brisbane.

Despite being pummelled by storms, choked by fire haze and recently named among the world's most expensive cities, Brisbane is cooler than ever, according to leading Australian travel guide publisher Lonely Planet.

The latest Australia edition of the guide book considered to be the world traveller's bible says Brisbane is "arguably Australia's hippest city", an "energetic river town on the way up, with an edgy arts scene, pumping nightlife and great coffee and restaurants".

The assessment may come as a surprise to residents of Sydney and Melbourne, long assumed to be living cooler, more culturally enriched lives.

However, according to the guide's authors, Charles Rawlings-Way and Meg Worby - neither of whom hails from Queensland - "booming Brisbane" may well be the country's most underrated city.

"Subcultural undercurrents run deep here, too," the authors say, "with cool bookshops, globally inspired restaurants, cafes, bars and band rooms aplenty."

Citing the appeal of the Brisbane River, the guide describes Brisbane as "a patchwork of urban villages, each with a distinct style and topography: bohemian, low-lying West End; hip, hilltop Paddington; exclusive, peninsular New Farm; prim, pointy Kangaroo Point."

It recommends that visitors "move from village to village and experience this diverse, eccentric, happening capital".

Brisbane student and skateboarder Jake Grindrod, although surprised, took the claim in his stride.

"Really? I would have thought it was Melbourne for sure, but that's great," he said.

Travel agencies complain about lack of tour guides

(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Though, World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has forecast that Oman's travel and tourism GDP will grow at an annual rate of six to eight per cent between 2013 and 2017, local tour operators say their business is suffering due to lack of registered tour guides in the sultanate.

As of December 2013, there were only 216 registered tour guides with the Ministry of Tourism. Lakshminarayanan, inbound tours manager, Bahwan Travel Agencies, said, ''Our business is suffering due to lack of tourist guides, especially those who can speak languages like German, French, Italian and Russian. We are forced to tell our business partners abroad and potential tourists about the shortage of tour guides. Clients even change the destination when they come to know about this problem. The guides here sometimes demand unreasonable money since they know there is a shortage.

''We also get tour guides from abroad on 21-day business visas, but the procedure to get them is lengthy. Sometimes, it takes more than 21 days to complete the procedure.''

Arun Raj, business development manager, Zahara Tours said the shortage is felt most during the peak season. ''The shortage is felt the most during Christmas, New Year and Easter holidays. Most of the registered guides do other part-time jobs. Some are only available on weekends or holidays and some give up guiding altogether. It's a serious problem for tour companies. We've currently stopped bookings due to this issue. Easing of restrictions on issue of visa by the authorities would help solve this problem.''

An official from another tourism company said it's getting difficult to obtain short-term visas. ''It is very difficult to find tour guides as short-term visas are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Also, tour guides brought in from other countries have to be given proper training, which is time-consuming.

''I urge the authorities to help motivate young Omanis to work in the industry and share their knowledge about the country with the tourists. Omanis who have studied tourism often end up working in other sectors. I think young Omanis who train in tourism should continue working in the sector.''&nb

World junior championship: Tampa vying to host in 2018

Team Canada's Jonathan Drouin celebrates a NHL preseason goal with the Lightning (Associated Press)

Some 3,500 Canadians trekked to Malmo, Sweden for this world junior championship, so one can only imagine how many snowbirds would flock to a more familiar travel destination.

The world junior runs on Canada's seemingly boundless passion for the event, although between the full rinks in Malmo for Sweden's games and the uptick in U.S. media coverage, interest in other top hockey nations is increasing incrementally. The combination of those two elements the ability and willingness of Canadian fans to travel over the Christmas holidays and the increased access American fans have to the tournament means the time for the U.S. to not host the WJC in a border city is fast approaching.

Enter Tampa, Fla., which has already done a bang-up job hosting a NCAA Frozen Four.

From Erik Erlendsson (@erlendssonTBO):

While the Forum would serve as the main venue for games, including the semifinal and championship games, a second venue is required. Germain Arena in Estero, home of the Florida Everblades in the East Coast Hockey League, is a likely candidate.

The Tampa area has hosted multiple Super Bowls, NCAA mens and womens basketball tournaments and the 2012 NCAA mens ice hockey championship. The 2015 Womens Final Four, 2016 NCAA Frozen Four and 2017 NCAA football championship game will be in Tampa.

[Rob] Higgins [who is the executive director of the Tampa Sports Commission Ed.] hopes the success of such events, particularly the Frozen Four, will resonate when the bidding process begins.

The fact we were a non-traditional host (of the 2012 Frozen Four) and were able to be successful ... speaks directly to our community as a sports town, as well as the passion we have for hockey here, Higgins said.(Tampa Tribune)

But what if there's a conflict with a Tampa Bay Buccaneers home playoff game? Don't worry, probably not a possibility.
