Serge Haroche, David Wineland win Nobel Physics Prize

Serge Haroche of France and David Wineland of the US today won the Nobel Prize for work in quantum physics that could one day open the way to revolutionary computers.

The pair were honoured for pioneering optical experiments in "measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems," the Nobel Physics jury said in its citation.

"Their groundbreaking methods have enabled this field of research to take the very first steps towards building a new type of super-fast computer based on quantum physics," it said.

"Perhaps the quantum computer will change our everyday lives in this century in the same radical way as the classical computer did in the last century."

The research has also led to the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the future basis for a new standard of time, with more than hundred-fold greater precision than present-day caesium clocks, it said.

Haroche, 68, said the award was "fairly overwhelming."

"I was in the street, passing near a bench, and was able to sit down immediately," he told journalists via a live link to Stockholm.

"I was walking with my wife, when I saw the Swedish area code, I realised." "I think we will have champagne," he added.

The two scientists specialise in quantum entanglement, a phenomenon of particle physics that has been proven by experiments but remains poorly understood.

When two particles interact, they become "entangled," which means one particle affects the other at a distance. The connection lasts long after they are separated.

Super Micro Computer Sees Q1 Revenue At Low End Of Guidance

(RTTNews.com) - Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI) said Tuesday that it now expects to report first quarter revenue of about $270 million, compared to its prior guidance of $270 to $290 million.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters currently expect the company to post revenue of $279.54 million for the first quarter.

Non-GAAP gross margin for the first quarter is expected to be about 13%. The main cause for the lower gross margin was the steep price drops for hard disk drives and memory, the company said. Margins on other products and components were stable to higher.

"Revenue for the quarter was up about 9% from last year and down slightly from our record last quarter despite challenges from a weaker global economy. The big price drops of HDD and memory, particularly late in the quarter, negatively impacted our net profit for the quarter as we adjusted to vendor contracts we entered into in the March quarter," said Charles Liang, Chairman and CEO.

The company said it will release final first quarter financial results on October 23.

Super Micro Computer shares are currently trading at $10.17, down 47 cents or 4.46%.

Super Micro Computer Inc. Provides First Quarter Financial Update and Schedules Conference Call and Webcast for Final …

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI), the leader in server technology innovation and green computing, today provided preliminary information regarding its financial results for the first fiscal quarter ended September 30, 2012.

The Company also announced that it will release final first quarter fiscal 2013 financial results on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, immediately after the close of regular trading, followed by a teleconference beginning at 2:00 p.m. (Pacific Time).

The Company now anticipates that it will report revenue for its first quarter of fiscal 2013 of approximately $270 million. This compares to the Company's previous guidance range of $270 to $290 million.

Non-GAAP gross margin is expected to be about 13%. The primary cause for the lower gross margin was the steep price drops for hard disk drives and memory. Margins on other products and components were stable to higher.

The Company anticipates that it will report non-GAAP operating expenses for the quarter in line with those reported for the prior quarter ended June 30, 2012.

Revenue for the quarter was up about 9% from last year and down slightly from our record last quarter despite challenges from a weaker global economy. The big price drops of HDD and memory, particularly late in the quarter, negatively impacted our net profit for the quarter as we adjusted to vendor contracts we entered into in the March quarter, said Charles Liang, Chairman and CEO. This quarter we experienced stronger demand for our new Sandybridge product lines suggesting a positive ramp for this new technology. In addition, late in the quarter, we began shipping our new Fat Twin architecture which is a benchmarked leader in performance, power efficiency and cost. We believe that we are well positioned in the market and we will provide more details on the earnings call.

The preliminary fiscal first quarter financial results presented in this press release are estimates and remain subject to finalization and review.

Conference Call/Webcast Information for October 23, 2012

Supermicro will hold a teleconference to announce its final first fiscal quarter financial results on October 23, 2012, beginning at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. PC ports explained: Get to know the back of your computer

From newcomers like DisplayPort to old standards like USB and dying breeds like FireWire, heres a quick and dirty guide to every port on your new PC.

Almost any modern communication need can be handled with a wireless solution. File transfer, streaming video, peripheral connections all of these can be accomplished without a physical connection. The future is now.

Yet the port persists. No, more than that: Its alive and well. Take a gander at your home office and youll likely find wires of all sorts leading to various connections: USB, HDMI, DVI, Thunderbolt, the list goes on.

Physical connections are still the quickest, most reliable way to transfer data. Which means its still important to know what goes where, and why. Lets clear the air and make room for some modern knowledge of old-fashioned connectivity.

The Universal Serial Bus would make a good role model for super-villains everywhere. It pledged to take over the world. Then it did so. It took well over a decade, but it has happened. FireWire is basically obsolete. External SATA is nearly extinct. Only Thunderbolt may provide a serious challenge but its years away from widespread adoption.

Modern USB essentially comes in two forms USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. The ports look the same and are compatible with each other, which is great. Except it makes separating the two difficult. Manufacturers the world over have tried to resolve the standard says that USB 3.0 ports should be blue or should be identified by super-speed USB 3.0 logo (see below).

If its not blue or identified by this logo, its not USB 3.0. Or at least it shouldnt be. Weve yet to encounter a computer that failed to identify USB 3.0 ports by at least logo, but we have run into a couple (both laptops) that didnt use blue.

The main difference between the standards is speed. The maximum bandwidth of 3.0 is over 10 times higher than 2.0. This doesnt mean transfer speeds are ten times better in the real world, but there is a huge difference. Youll see much quicker file transfers with a USB 3.0 drive plugged in to a 3.0 port. Transfer speeds are not better if you plug a 3.0 drive into a 2.0 port. Data can still be transferred, but only at 2.0 speeds.

FireWire was developed by Apple to solve the lack of high-speed connections available to peripherals during the early 90s. Speed was given high priority, and it showed in the resulting standard. FireWire which went through several revisions, and each was consistently quicker than USB.

IIT-M computer system gets ‘fastest’ tag

The super cluster a set of tightly-connected computers that work together at IIT-Madras has been declared the fastest among all educational institutions in the country.

TOP500, a global project that details the most powerful known computer systems in the world, has ranked the new IBM Virgo Super Cluster at IIT-Madras as the 224thin the top 500.

The other Indian entries ahead of the one at IIT Madras are the machines at an ISRO facility in Mumbai and the CSIR Lab in Bangalore. The cluster worth Rs. 9 crore, which will be put to use from Monday, will enormously increase the speed of computing and accuracy of results of research experiments.

This new system will be available to users, both professors and research scholars, across departments. Users can access it from wherever they are.

Five years ago, the institute was the first IIT to set up a cluster with a computing power of 20 teraflops, but Virgo has a computing power of 97 teraflops.

It took almost ten months for us to plan this, said P.B. Sunil Kumar, professor (physics), in-charge, high performance computing. The cluster will be of great help to various ambitious projects at IIT-Madras.

If a normal desktop CPU requires power of 300 units, this cluster works on 120 Kilo units per hour and is spread across 36 sq m.

Super-light notebooks fail to take off

High prices plus competition from smartphones and tablets mean that ultrabook PCs are failing to sell in high numbers.

Ultrabooks, the super-slim, super-light, super-quiet notebook PCs that were meant to revolutionize the market are failing to entice users away from other gadgets.

Hopes had been high that 2012 would be the year that these ultra-portable computers really took off and sales of 22 million units were predicted. However, the latest IHS iSuppli Compute Platforms Topical Report, published Monday, shows that these estimates were way off the mark and due to a combination of ineffective marketing, competition in the market and their comparatively high cost, only 10.3 million ultrabooks are now predicted to ship by the end of the year.

"So far, the PC industry has failed to create the kind of buzz and excitement among consumers that is required to propel ultrabooks into the mainstream," said Craig Stice, the report's author. "This is especially a problem amid all the hype surrounding media tablets and smartphones. When combined with other factors, including prohibitively high pricing, this means that ultrabook sales will not meet expectations in 2012."

Issues surrounding marketing and price can be overcome -- especially as ultrabook sales increase -- but competition from tablets and smartphones can only be addressed through new features and functionality that consumers want or need. And in this respect, the report is optimistic, noting that Intel, the microprocessor giant whose chipset and specifications define the term ultrabook, has been busy unveiling new capabilities for future models. These include touchscreen technology, voice recognition and a host of GPS and motion sensors -- technologies that are key drivers of the success of tablets.

In particular, manufacturers including Acer, HP and Dell have high hopes for convertible' ultrabooks which, via detachable or rotating screens, can be turned into tablets, or have touchsensitive screens, giving users the best of both worlds. For example the Acer Aspire S7 can be opened to 180 and has a 10-point touch display optimized for the forthcoming Windows 8. Meanwhile the Dell XPS Duo 12 has a screen that can spin within its outer frame so that it can be on the inside or the outside of the computer.

Flash Crash Part 2 Could Come at Any Time: Analyst

A former hedge fund analyst told U.S. senators on Thursday that another Flash Crash in financial markets could come at any time as a result of super high-speed computer trading.

It is simply a matter of time before we have another catastrophe of the same magnitude or worse than the Flash Crash, Lauer said in his prepared testimony.

The next time it happens, we may not be so fortunate with regard to the timing it was only luck that the Flash Crash didnt start in the morning, inciting markets around the world to crash, or at 3:45 p.m. EST, with the market closing after the drop, but before it could recover. If this were to happen, there would be an overnight exodus from the market with disastrous consequences for the U.S. economy.

Lauer said he personally experienced the panic of high speed market lurches as he sat on the global equity trading desk of a futures trading firm on May 6, 2010 the day of the so-called Flash Crash, in which the market plunged, and then rebounded again sharply in a matter of minutes.

As I watched the market crash, I witnessed something unthinkable: the market simply disappeared. For what felt like an eternity, but was more likely 30 seconds to a minute, there were no bids or offers displayed in the market for major stocks and ETFs such as SPY (the S&P 500 Index ETF

Lauer argued that all the volatility that has resulted from the Flash Crash and similar disasters in individual stocks and IPOs is causing retail investors to flee the market.

The flight of the retail investor during a period of incredible stock market returns is a sure sign that this exodus is a result of mistrust rather than economic conditions, he said in prepared testimony. Since the Flash Crash in May 2010, over $283 billion has flown out of the U.S. Equity markets. Over that time period, the S&P 500

The Senate also heard from supporters of high frequency trading, who argued that millisecond level transactions help markets find the correct prices for stocks and other equities quickly.

Over the last four years, I have witnessed an unprecedented number of claims that our markets are horribly broken, unfair and dangerous, said Chris Concannon, executive vice president of Virtu Financial. These claims tend to be short on facts and evidence, but long on press coverage and book deals. Our market is not perfect. And it has recently experienced some dramatic mishaps. But, despite its flaws, it is a market that has withstood the most unprecedented volatility and repricing of equity values in our lifetime while maintaining the same levels of pricing efficiency.

Advanced Mission Computer For Super Hornet, Growler Successfully Tested

Sun, Sep 16, 2012

The U.S. Navy has successfully flight tested a new mission computer that will expand the performance of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler. The new Type 4 Advanced Mission Computer (AMC) increases computing power and accelerates image and mission processing functions. Those advances will support new systems being incorporated onto the aircraft, including a Distributed Targeting System, Infrared Search and Track, and a new high-definition touch-screen display.

"The Type 4 Advanced Mission Computer puts game-changing computing power directly into the hands of the warfighters who fly the Super Hornet and Growler," said Kevin Fogarty, director of Boeing F/A-18 and EA-18G Mission Systems. "Working collaboratively with the U.S. Navy and our industry partners, we are increasing combat capability with an affordable, evolutionary approach to technology advancements." The new AMC was tested on a Navy F/A-18F during a 90-minute flight at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, CA, verifying that it met critical safety and system requirements. Additional testing is planned. Boeing will deliver to the Navy the first Super Hornets and Growlers with the Type 4 AMC in 2014. General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems is Boeing's principal supplier for development of the AMC. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a low observable, multirole aircraft that performs a multitude of missions, including air superiority, day/night strike with precision-guided weapons, fighter escort, and close air support. The EA-18G Growler is the only air combat platform that provides full airborne electronic attack capability along with the targeting and self-defense capabilities derived from the F/A-18E/F Block II Super Hornet.

A team led by Professor Simon Cox at the University of Southampton built a super computer using 64 Raspberry Pi computers. The rig housing is made with Lego blocks. It doesn't get more geeked-out than this.

Professor Cox says As soon as we were able to source sufficient Raspberry Pi computers we wanted to see if it was possible to link them together into a supercomputer. We installed and built all of the necessary software on the Pi starting from a standard Debian Wheezy system image and we have published a guide so you can build your own supercomputer.

About theIridis-Pi:

The racking was built using Lego with a design developed by Simon and James, who has also been testing the Raspberry Pi by programming it using free computer programming software Python and Scratch over the summer. The machine, named Iridis-Pi after the Universitys Iridis supercomputer, runs off a single 13 Amp mains socket and uses MPI (Message Passing Interface) to communicate between nodes using Ethernet. The whole system cost under 2,500 (excluding switches) and has a total of 64 processors and 1Tb of memory (16Gb SD cards for each Raspberry Pi).

NYPD unveils super computer

Published: Aug. 9, 2012 at 5:09 PM

NEW YORK, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The New York City Police Department unveiled a super computer system created to help police better track criminals, officials said.

The system, called the Domain Awareness System and unveiled Wednesday, was developed jointly by the NYPD and Microsoft Corp., the New York Daily News reported.

"We're not your mom-and-pop police department anymore," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "We are in the next century. We are leading the pack."

Police officers will have access to the city's more than 3,000 street cameras and all of the department's databases through the one system, said NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

"For years, we've been stovepiped as far as databases are concerned," Kelly said. "Now, everything that we have about an incident, an event, an individual comes together on that workbench, so it's one-stop shopping for investigators."

Because the police department played a key role in developing the system, should Microsoft sell it to other cities across the country, the NYPD will get 30 percent of the proceeds, the New York Post reported.
