With artificial intelligence expected to be the next big game-changer in the industry, IBM is betting big on its super-computer, Watson. Named after former IBM president Thomas Watson, the system-of-systems is capable of understanding human speech and natural language. It beat two top contestants in American quiz show Jeopardy last year. Manoj Saxena, General Manager of Watson Solutions, IBM, spoke to Business Line about its expansion plans in India, and the potential the super computer holds in the Indian markets. IBM is also launching a new set of offerings next year, targeted towards the growth markets. Saxena said the focus in India is primarily around development and delivery.

What kind of machine is Watson?

We call it the beginning of a third generation of computers or cognitive computers. These are computers which are able to reason and learn. The first generation of computers were tabulating machines like grinders and weighing machines. The second generation of computers are the ones that we use today. The ones that can process a number of things like invoices and transactions, but they cant understand human behaviour and words. Watson is the beginning of the third generation of cognitive computing that understands human language and learns from the usage.

What are your plans for Watson in India?

We recently announced the formation of a Watson software and services team in Bangalore. The purpose of the team is to be able to manage the content and information that goes into Watson. We are building a delivery and support team to start supporting our deployments in South-East Asia sometime next year.

I fully expect the India team to be innovating new ways around managing content, as well as innovating with clients on the new solutions to bring to market. We are trying to understand not just the Indian markets, but all the growth markets and seeing what is the functionality and what is the foot print of applications that are needed there.

Are you planning to expand the Watson team to other cities in India?

The next city where we plan to expand into is Pune. Although we cant give numbers, the team will be made up of both experienced IBMers and freshers. Mid next year, well be announcing a set of offerings. I cant disclose much, but these are systems that will help knowledge workers people who are in portfolio management, bond traders or contact centres. Watson could be a good candidate for anything from Dalal Street to the doctors office. (Watson is being used to diagnose cancer in the US ).

Raspberry Pi: The Small Computer With The Big Ambition (To Get Kids Coding Again)

If youre a hardware hacker who knows your apples youll have heard of the Raspberry Pi and maybe even bought one already. Its the super cheap mini-computer which featured prominently at ourHackathon event last month.

But theres more to the Pi than a decent processor at bargain basement prices ($35/a $25 version is coming soon). We got the chance to chat to Eben Upton, founder and trustee of the not-for-profit Raspberry Pi Foundation and the man responsible for the overall software and hardware architecture of the Pi about the very big-hearted ambition behind the project.

TC: What was your motivation in creating Raspberry Pi what were you setting out to try and achieve?

Eben: I was working at the university in Cambridge about six years ago and I had this awful experience of seeing the number of people applying for Computer Science every year going down and the sorts of things theyd have to do getting less and less impressive.Ever since then theres been an effort largely focused around the computer centre in Cambridge to develop some sort of system, some sort of platform for giving kids the opportunity to get involved in programming.

And this went through a number of iterations, and during that process I joined Broadcom as a chip architect, and fortunately it turns out that theres a Broadcom chip that I was involved in designing which has pretty much exactly all the features you need for a low cost programming platform for kids. And thats where the whole thing came from.First this realisation we had a problem and then some sort of slightly contrived good luck in having access to a platform that we could use to make this.

Weve always had this idea that youre not going to appeal to children with a platform that cant do anything interesting, that cant do anything recognisably modern. So one of the nice things about Raspberry Pi is weve ended up with a platform that can play 1080p can play Blueray quality video; thats got more graphical power than a Nintendo Wii; its something which is recognisable its not a retro machine. It may look a little retro but in terms of performance its a recognisably modern piece of hardware.

TC: Did you attribute the decline in programming skills to a lack of hack-friendly devices?

Eben: I grew up with a computer I could program. I learnt to program not because anyone ever thought of teaching me to program and I think a lot of people of the same generation had the same experience an experience that is transparently not available to children now.

Not every child has a PC, even the ones who do have a PC, the PC is not a particularly friendly environment for those who want to program. So our hypothesis is this is whats happened: we started to lose those programmable 8-bit machines of the late 80s that then led in quick succession to the loss first of kids who were programming, then it was undergraduates who were programing, and then of graduate recruits to industry who were programming.

The Biebs is bummed today. Yes, Justin Bieber, the young zillionaire (estimate), boyfriend of the mega-hot Selena Gomez and driver of a seriously badass car is super pissed off because someone stole his laptop and camera. Sure thats a pretty crappy thing to have happen, but for a little bit there we had a hard time figuring out why he was so mad. Surely the kid could afford to find a way to bring Steve Jobs back to life and ask him to personally build him a brand new one-of-a-kind super computer. Whats the problem? Then Justin posted a series of tweets, and it all started to come together. The comp and camera contained personal footage. Hmmm, our reading comprehension skill arent so great, but that sounds an awful lot like sex tape. JK! But not really.

Sucks when you take personal footage and people dont respect your privacy, he angrily wrote on twitter on Wednesday. Yesterday during the show me and my tour manager josh had some stuff stolen. really sucks. people should respect others property. I had a lot of personal footage on that computer and camera and that is what bothers me the most. #lame #norespect Things got even worse for the 18-year-old a few hours later when a nude photo surfaced that appeared the show his lower torso and his, err, Scooter Braun, if you catch our drift. However, his loyal band of Belieber fans are quick to point out that his belly button and nipples dont match those of the real Bieber. This may prove that the photos are fake, but definitely proves that these folks spend far too much time studying Justin Biebers nipples.

In any event, what is it that the Biebs is so reluctant for us to see? Sure everyone is imagining a sex tape with Selena, but the real answer could be a lot more innocent. Check out some potential things weve come up with:

1. His recipe for spaghetti and milk, which has been in the Bieber family for generations.

2. His old AIM screen-name from 5th grade: BiebzBoi163 (so embarrassing!).

3. Photos from his super secret family reunion with all of the other Canadian celebrities.

Did Super Micro Computer Squander Its Latest Sales Increase?

Margins matter. The more Super Micro Computer (Nasdaq: SMCI) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Super Micro Computer's competitive position could be.

Here's the current margin snapshot for Super Micro Computer over the trailing 12 months: Gross margin is 16.3%, while operating margin is 4.8% and net margin is 2.9%.

Unfortunately, a look at the most recent numbers doesn't tell us much about where Super Micro Computer has been, or where it's going. A company with rising gross and operating margins often fuels its growth by increasing demand for its products. If it sells more units while keeping costs in check, its profitability increases. Conversely, a company with gross margins that inch downward over time is often losing out to competition, and possibly engaging in a race to the bottom on prices. If it can't make up for this problem by cutting costs -- and most companies can't -- then both the business and its shares face a decidedly bleak outlook.

Of course, over the short term, the kind of economic shocks we recently experienced can drastically affect a company's profitability. That's why I like to look at five fiscal years' worth of margins, along with the results for the trailing 12 months, the last fiscal year, and last fiscal quarter (LFQ). You can't always reach a hard conclusion about your company's health, but you can better understand what to expect, and what to watch.

The pair, both 68, were honoured for pioneering optical experiments in "measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems," the Nobel Physics jury said in its citation.

"Most science progresses very slowly," Wineland told AFP.

"On the computing side, we are able to think about applying these quantum systems to solve other problems that we try to do on computer now but our computers are limited.

"It has not happened yet and I am not even sure it will happen in the next decade, but I think it will eventually happen using quantum principles to make a quantum computer that will actually have applications."

In a pre-dawn phone interview recorded and posted on the Nobel committee website earlier, Wineland cautioned that such a super-computer was still a "long, long way" off.

Today's computers use a binary code, in which data is stored in a bit that could be either zero or one.

But in superposition, a quantum bit, known as a qubit, could be either zero or one, or both zero and one at the same time.

Computer shipments down for first time in 11 years

The global PC market is having a rough year, with shipments set to decline for the first time in 11 years.

Worldwide shipments are expected to fall 1.2% to 348.7 million units, down from 352.8 million last year, according to information and analytics provider IHS. Not since 2001 has the global PC industry suffered such a decline, the group said.

There was great hope through the first half that 2012 would prove to be a rebound year for the PC market, said Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for computer systems at IHS. Now three-quarters through the year, the usual boost from the back-to-school season appears to be a bust, and both AMD and Intels third-quarter outlooks appear to be flat to down.

"Optimism has vanished and turned to doubt, and the industry is now training its sights on 2013 to deliver the hoped-for rebound. All this is setting the PC market up for its first annual decline since the dot-com bust year of 2001," he said.

One problem appears to be the slow adoption of super thin and light laptops known as ultrabooks. Although there was considerable enthusiasm that ultrabooks would revitalize the PC market, they continue to be priced too high for many consumers.

The appeal of smartphones and tablets also appears to be hampering interest in PCs.

Still, IHS says there are signs that a "strong rebound" could still occur in 2013. The group has reduced its forecast for ultrabooks and other ultrathin notebook computers, but said they remain viable products "with the potential to redraw the PC landscape." The release of Windows 8 could also boost the PC market.

Super Micro Computer gapped open slightly lower Tuesday and declined throughout the afternoon. Shares finished down by 1.33 at $9.31 on strong volume. The stock has been falling for the past 3 weeks and set a new low for the year.

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Serge Haroche of France and David Wineland of the US won the Nobel Prize on Tuesday for work in quantum physics that could one day open the way to revolutionary computers.

The pair, both 68, were honoured for pioneering optical experiments in "measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems," the Nobel Physics jury said in its citation.

"Their groundbreaking methods have enabled this field of research to take the very first steps towards building a new type of super-fast computer based on quantum physics," it said.

"Perhaps the quantum computer will change our everyday lives in this century in the same radical way as the classical computer did in the last century."

Wineland cautioned on Tuesday such a super-computer was "a long, long way" off.

"I think many of us feel that it will eventually happen," he said in a pre-dawn phone interview recorded and posted on the Nobel committee website.

The research has also led to the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the future basis for a new standard of time, with more than hundred-fold greater precision than present-day caesium clocks, it said.

Haroche said the award was "fairly overwhelming."

"I was in the street, passing near a bench, and was able to sit down immediately," he told journalists via a live link to Stockholm.

"I was walking with my wife, when I saw the Swedish area code, I realised."

The research has also led to the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the future basis for a new standard of time, with more than hundred-fold greater precision than present-day caesium clocks, it said.

Haroche said the award was "fairly overwhelming."
