If there's one thing the Philippines do not need, it's another super typhoon. Parts of the country, particularly the island of Samar, are still picking up the pieces after last year's devastating Super Typhoon Haiyan, which was one of the most powerful storms ever to make landfall anywhere.

While Super Typhoon Hagupit, which is also known as Ruby in the Philippines, will not strike with nearly the same ferocity, it presents a deadly array of threats to the Philippines, including its densely populated capital of Manila. As of Friday morning ET, Typhoon Hagupit had maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour, which is the equivalent of a high-end Category 4 storm, and the minimum wind threshold required for super typhoon status.

Typhoon Hagupit (or "Ruby" in the Philippines) track forecast from PAGASA on Dec. 5, 2014.

The Philippines' weather agency, known by the acronym PAGASA, and the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) forecast the storm to either make landfall on Samar or skirt just to the north, before making a beeline for Manila. PAGASA has placed 34 geographic areas under storm warnings, including the islands of Mindanao and Luzon, as well as the city of Tacloban, where evacuations have been underway.

The storm has weakened considerably from its peak strength as a strong Category 5 storm on Wednesday, but is holding its own, rather than continuing to weaken significantly before arriving in the Philippines. On Thursday night, the JTWC had forecast continued weakening, but backed off that forecast by Friday morning.

Manila, the low-lying nation's capital, has a population of 12 million, and experiences flooding in heavy rainfall events, as well as storm surge situations.

Balotelli charged over 'racist' post

AFP/File Paul EllisLiverpool's Italian striker Mario Balotelli appeared to endorse an image of computer game character Super Mario on the social media website which included the words "jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew"

London (AFP) - Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli was charged by the Football Association on Friday for re-posting a message on Instagram that contained racist and anti-Semitic references.

Balotelli appeared to endorse an image of computer game character Super Mario on the social media website which included the words "jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew".

The post was titled "Don't be a racist" and continued: "Be like Mario. He's an Italian plumber, created by Japanese people, who speaks English and looks like a Mexican."

The FA announced in a statement: "Mario Balotelli has been charged by the FA in relation to a recent posting on social media."

"It is alleged the Liverpool player breached FA rule E3[1] in that his posting was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper.

"It is further alleged that this is an 'aggravated breach' as defined by FA rule E3[2] as it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief."

Balotelli deleted the post following criticism from other social media users, but after the FA confirmed it was looking into the matter, he wrote on Twitter: "I apologise if I've offended anyone.

"The post was meant to be anti-racist with humour. I now understand that out of context (it) may have the opposite effect. Not all Mexicans have moustache, not all black people jump high and not all Jewish people love money.

"I used a cartoon done by someone else because it has Super Mario and I thought it was funny and not offensive. Again, I'm sorry."

Final PL table: Super computer predicts glory for Chelsea and Man United but Liverpool misery

The boffins at Bloomberg Sports have used their super computer to predict the outcome of this years Premier League and it makes comforting reading for Chelsea and Manchester United fans.

Manchester City may have reduced the gap between themselves and Jose Mourinho's front runners with a 3-0 win at Southampton, but Bloomberg currently predict Chelsea will run out comfortable winners at the end of the season.

The conclusion produced from the numbers crunched in their complex algorithm is that Chelsea will lift the Premier League title with just shy of 90points, while City are projected to achieve around 83 points.

Well adrift, but in third place, is Manchester United, ahead of you guessed it, Arsenal in fourth.

Liverpool currently 11th in the table are predicted to make up lots of ground, but at this stage the super computer says they will only make it to sixth in the final table, behind Tottenham.

Theres misery for last season's promoted teams, as Bloomberg are presently forcasting relegation forQPR, Leicester and Burnley.

Its worth keeping in mind that Bloombergs predicted table is constantly updated as calculations adjust according to the results of each Premier League matchday, but for the moment, it makes for interesting reading.

Check out the full table below, ordered according to projected final positions, butwith current numerical positionin the league(correct on 1 December 2014) on the left, with projected final points total on the right...

Super Typhoon Hagupit to hit Philippines

One of the most powerful storms of 2014 is bearing down on the country bringing the threat of damaging winds and floods.

The Philippines are preparing for the arrival of what could be the strongest typhoon of 2014.Super Typhoon Hagupit is expected to strike the country at the weekend as the equivalent of a Category 2 or 3 hurricane on the five point Saffir-Simpson scale with sustained winds close to 200kph.

Hugupit is currently intensifying. Peak winds on Friday, when the typhoon is still over open water, are expected to reach 315kph with gusts of 380kph. Thunderstorms are rising to nearly 16km into the atmosphere and rainfall rates are an astonishing 138mm per hour.

The threat posed by Hagupit has caused great concern across the country, as it comes just over one year since Super Typhoon Haiyan. Haiyan will live long in the memory for many Filipinos as it was the strongest storm ever to hit the country with sustained winds just before landfall of 315kph. It was also the deadliest storm to hit the Philippines; 6,300 people lost their lives as a result of damaging winds and a massive storm surge which peaked at over 6 metres in the port city of Tacloban on the central island of Leyte.

There is great concern for the residents of the area as at least 3,500 families are still living in tents and temporary structures. Authorities have already evacuated 10 to 15,000 people from their homes. There is still considerable doubt as to the exact track Hagupit will take. The US Joint Typhoon Warning Center favours a track which takes Haugpit northwards towards central Luzon as a Category 4 or 5 system.

Most other computer predictions, including the usually reliable European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, track Hagupit on a more westerly track with landfall on Samar island during Saturday. If, as seems likely, but by no means certain, the storm follows this trajectory, it will move across slightly cooler waters. This, coupled with less favourable winds higher in the atmosphere, should see Hagupit weaken to the equivalent of a Category 2 to 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 180 to 200kph. These winds will bring huge waves but storm surge predictions are currently less than one metre. It may well be that the greatest threat to life and property comes not from the winds or the waves, but from the rainfall. Between 300 and 600mm of rain could fall in a matter of hours. This will pose a high risk of flooding and mudslides.

Super Typhoon Hagupit may try for a near-repeat of deadly Typhoon Haiyan

Typhoon Hagupit as it intensified on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014.

Image: NOAA

By Andrew Freedman2014-12-03 18:14:52 UTC

Update: 9:10 a.m. ET: Super Typhoon Hagupit may be peaking in strength this morning, with maximum sustained winds of about 170 miles per hour. All weather agencies, from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the U.S. to the Philippines' own agency known as PAGASA, now forecast the storm making a slow trek across several Philippine islands starting on Saturday. However, these agencies still disagree on the storm track and intensity, and the specifics are going to matter a great deal.

It will not be nearly as intense as Super Typhoon Haiyan was last year when that storm made landfall near Tacloban in the central Philippines. Still, Hagupit, also known as Typhoon Ruby in the Philippines, poses a multitude of life-threatening risks, from rainfall-induced landslides to high winds and storm surge flooding.

Update: 5:15 p.m. ET: Typhoon Hagupit has been upgraded to super typhoon status, with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour as of 5 p.m. ET. The storm is forecast to intensify further, potentially reaching high-end Category 5 status with maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour on Thursday.

The latest storm track forecast from the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center has shifted the storm west compared to the previous forecast, which would take the storm closer to the Philippines, while still turning the storm to the north as it approaches the island nation. However, the Philippines' own forecast agency, in a forecast that is supported by forecast agencies in Japan, Taiwan and other Asian nations, is predicting the storm will make landfall near the island of Leyte on Saturday, local time. This would affect the same area as Super Typhoon Haiyan last year.

However, even if the storm reaches Category 5 intensity on Wednesday night and Thursday, it is likely to slow its forward speed significantly and weaken before it approaches the Philippines. However, it is still forecast to be a typhoon at that point.

Super Typhoon Hagupit is now the sixth super typhoon to form in the Western Pacific Ocean so far this year.

Update: 3:30 p.m. ET: Typhoon Hagupit has intensified significantly since Wednesday morning, and is now nearing super typhoon status, at the border of a Category 4 or 5 storm based on satellite imagery. It is expected to remain a very intense storm through at least Thursday, before it begins weakening as it gets closer to the Philippines.

Clemson researchers work to change DNA, prevent disease

CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) - Stopping disease before it starts, changing DNA, finding treatments and reversing debilitating disorders, are all types of personalized medicine that may arrive in the not-too distant future. Researchers at Clemson University are on the front lines of making it happen.

The work is in beginning stages, using Clemson's super computer, The Palmetto Cluster, for complex calculations, but doctors and patients expect the work to change their world.

It's a change that Connor Raymond's family can't see come soon enough.

Even as a baby, now-six-year-old Connor's parents knew something wasn't quite right. His mom, Katia Luedtke, remembers that he was missing milestones that typical babies made. She said that by six-months-old, Connor couldn't sit up, roll over, or hold his head up.

After years of testing, Connor was diagnosed with Snyder-Robinson Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body and intellectual capacity.

As one of just 821 in the world with Snyder-Robinson, Connor's family was astonished to find that Dr. Emil Alexov, at Clemson University's Department of Physics, was studying their son's disorder.

Alexov and his team of post-doctorate fellows use computer modeling to analyze individual DNA molecules in people with many different mental disorders. He said they're trying to figure out how small differences in DNA affects human health.

Since each molecule is made of hundreds of thousands of atoms, the team needs The Palmetto Cluster to make millions of computations. On a regular computer, that could take years, but even on the super computer, one calculation could take a couple weeks.

Alexov said the most important part is to figure out how the molecule acts when it's healthy and when it's not. That, he said, will bring them closer to developing treatment.

Eventually, they want to physically fix a genetic difference.

Balotelli issues apology for posting controversial image but Liverpool striker still facing FA rap

Mario Balotelli has apologised for a post on social media which provoked claims of racism and anti-semitism.

The Liverpool striker shared an image from the computer game 'Super Mario' on his Instagram page on Monday which included the comment "jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew".

The image of Super Mario - with whom Balotelli shares a nickname - appeared with the heading "Don't be a racist". The text then read: "Be like Mario. He's an Italian plumber, created by Japanese people, who speaks English and looks like a Mexican," before the final line, which led to a storm of criticism.

Balotelli quickly deleted the post before defending himself on Twitter by writing: "My Mom is jewish so all of u shut up please".

But he took to Twitter again on Tuesday morning to issue a full apology after the FA confirmed it is launching an investigation.

"I apologise if I've offended anyone," he wrote. "The post was meant to be anti-racist with humour. I now understand that out of context may have the opposite effect.

"Not all Mexicans have moustache, not all black people jump high and not all Jewish people love money.

"I used a cartoon done by someone else because it has Super Mario and I thought it was funny and not offensive. Again, I'm sorry."

Despite the apology, Balotelli could still be charged by the Football Association, with a spokesman for the governing body confirming it is looking into the post.

Under their social media guidelines, the minimum ban for race-related breaches of rules is five games.

How to: Syncing your computer & phone across platforms

The biggest news this year from Apples software department was the intertwining of its iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite Operating Systems using two features called Handoff and Continuity. They both take great advantage of Apples tightly-controlled software experience by letting the user seamlessly move between a Mac, an iPhone and iPad, picking up where you left off. Your text messages get synced with your computer and iPad, and you can take calls that come to your iPhone on the other two devices. Transferring files wirelessly between these three devices is a breeze...

Now it all sounds hunky dory if youre singing to Apples tunes. But statistically speaking, there are more chances of you owning a Windows computer and an Android smartphone. My daily drivers are a Mac and an Android phone. So, how do you un-complicate your life by making these different platforms sync? Well, it may not deliver a beautiful experience like Apple products working together are supposed to, but here are a few use cases and the required apps that Ive found very useful to get it done:

1) Phone Calls

Theres an app called HandsFree for Mac that basically makes your phone think of your computer as a bluetooth headset. Ive been using this app for the past few days and although it hasnt been an entirely hiccup-free experience, it has worked for the most part.

My phone latches onto the Macbook the moment the lid is up. So not only can you receive phone calls on your computer, but theres a tiny app that sits in the menu bar that lets you dial from the Mac too. You can also look up contacts from the Macs address book (a good reason to sync them with your Google account if you havent already). In my testing, people could hear me well, but I needed to bump up the volume on my end to be able to hear clearly. Also, theres a bit of delay in relaying the voice over. Still, I dont mind these niggles for the convenience of picking up calls on my computer, which I spend most of my waking day staring into.

If youre a Windows PC user, good news, you dont even need a separate app. Theres a tutorial on how to pair a Windows 7 PC with a phone so that you can make & receive calls. The steps are a little different for Windows 8, but looking at the video, it shouldnt be too hard to figure out.

2) SMS Syncing:

There are many apps that allow you to sync text messages from an Android phone to a computer. Of the lot, I liked MightyText because its a browser plugin that shoots notifications on your computer when you get a text message; mighty useful when, say, youre making online transactions requiring a One Time Password (OTP) sent over SMS. You can also reply to messages right from that notification. Another nifty feature is the phone battery level notificationsit notifies when your phone is running low on charge and also when the battery is fully charged. You can see your entire SMS conversations in a web app on the browser. Not the best experience, but it gets the job done.

3) Universal Copy-Paste:

This has to be the most brilliant cross-device syncing Ive ever come across: Pushbullet is an app known for easily pushing files from one to many of your devices. You can also use Pushbullet to get all your phone notifications appear on your computer by using theAndroid app, and Chrome and Firefoxbrowser plugin. But whats moreuniversal copy & paste lets you copy any portion of text from one device and simply paste it in the other. It works in any text field on any app of your Android phone and on any computer. Check out the video below.

Reel Story; Super Smash Bros Wii U

I will be journeying back to the world of my Wii U because Super Smash Brothers Wii U was released and of course I got the game.

I will start with what I hate with this game.

It plays just like Super Smash Brothers Brawl on the Wii. Super Smash Brothers Brawl played too much like Super Smash Brothers Melee on the Game Cube. Super Smash Brothers Melee was a great follow-up to Super Smash Brothers on the Nintendo 64.

Do you get where I am going with this?

In case I lost you, this new game feels like a recycled version of a recycled version of Super Smash Brothers Melee. To me there are not enough differences in style of game play from the previous games. All this feels like is Super Smash Brothers Melee with Wii U graphics and the Final Smash feature of Super Smash Brother Brawl.

Im not saying the game is not fun to play because it is. When you have a bunch of people to play with this game can be loads of fun. That said, because it really is the same game yet again, with the same game mechanics yet again, it can become stale and repetitive.

The character selection in this game goes to both extremes with me. On one hand I find it uninspired and on the other I think it is great.

The uninspired part comes from the fact that characters from the Mario and Pokemon franchises flood the roster, over possible character from The Legend of Zelda or Metroid. Sure from Zelda we have Link, Ganondorf, Zelda, Toon Link and Shiek but what about other characters?

Aganhim from A Link to the Past would be awesome. What about the Skull Kid from Majoras Mask? Or a Staflos? What about the old man from the first game that gives you the sword? What about some of the playable characters from Hyrule Warriors?

Metroid does not have a lot of characters to choose from. Kraid, the giant dinosaur that is Godzilla size is way too big for a game like this. Mother Brain could work but only if she has her body from Super Metroid. Mother Brain is usually just a biological computer locked in a glass container. Golden Torizo from Super Metroid would also be pretty sweet.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Smashes Record

Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U has smashed a record, becoming the fastest selling Wii U game to date- and perhaps forever. After all, it will be difficult for another game to dethrone this formidable challenger from the top spot. In just its first three days of availability (November 21st-23rd), the game sold 490,000 units (counting both physical as well as digital copies from the Nintendo eShop). Over the years, the Super Smash Bros. series has been very popular, selling over 14 million units (across all titles in the series) in the U.S. alone. Its been six years since Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released for the Wii, and it looks like people are rather excited about this new entry to the series!

In contrast, Mario Kart 8 (which released on May 15th) sold about 2.82 million copies in its first month of availability. This would be an estimated 94,000 or so units sold in a 3-day period during its first month of availability. Hyrule Warriors (which released on August 26th) sold about 100,000 units in Japan during its first month of availability (and about 190,000 units in North America, nearly double the Japan number). That would be an estimated 10,000 units sold in a 3-day period during that month in Japan (or an estimated 19,000 units sold in a 3-day period during that month in North America). So clearly, Super Smash Bros. has literally smashed these games in sales, though that isnt much of a surprise.

Mario Kart 8

Hyrule Warriors

As you may know, the Wii U has not been doing as well as Nintendo had hoped, but having a bunch of big new titles coming out this year has caused an increase in hardware sales for the system. This is good news, but Nintendo says they still have work to do. Of course, other games like Bayonetta 2 have also helped to some degree. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will likely give an even bigger boost to Wii U sales on top of increases from titles released earlier this year. The holidays are looking good for Nintendo, and hopefully things will continue to look up for them!

Danica Patrick set for another GoDaddy Super Bowl commercial

Updated NOV 24, 2014 12:24p ET

Danica Patrick will be back for her record 14thSuper Bowl commercial for GoDaddy, but this one will be different than those she's done in the past.

No walking naked across the commercial set with Jillian Michaels while crewmen stand gape-jawed.

No steamy shower scene for teenage computer geeks to leer at.

No body painting a nude model.

No dressing up like Lisa from "Weird Science" or teasingly unzipping a black leather jacket.

This time around, Danica will be featured with a puppy.

Yes, a puppy.

And an inspirational message in the 30-second spot.

"We are taking an advertising tradition -- a tried-and-true Super Bowl commercial convention -- and turning it upside down," said GoDaddy chief marketing officer Barb Rechterman. "People love cute, little puppies in Super Bowl commercials, right? The power of our next Super Bowl ad is how it pivots from what you think is a traditional 'Hallmark' style commercial into something unexpected, while highlighting how our products help a small business owner drive their business online."

End to end 5G for super, superfast mobile

A collaboration between NEC Electronics Samsung and several academic centres in China and Iran, is investigating how software-defined cellular networking might be used to give smart phone users the next generation of super-superfast broadband, 5G. They provide details in the International Journal of Communication Networks and Distributed Systems.

Currently, the fourth generation of mobile phone connection technology, 4G, in as far as it has been adopted provides broadband-type connectivity for enabled devices such as smart phones, tablet computers, laptops and other gadgets through two standards: the Mobile WiMAX standard (first used in South Korea in 2007), and the first-release Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard (in Oslo, Norway and Stockholm, Sweden since 2009). Peak speeds were set in the standards at 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) for mobile users and ten times that for static, domestic 5G users, 1 gigabit per second. 100 Mbits/s is three times faster than the earlier 3G system but users commonly do not see data transfer at such high rates, downloads are usually at best 10 Mbits/s.

As yet there is no single standard for 5G although various systems are being touted based on rebuilding the cellular networks to be super-efficient and exploiting different frequencies with their capacity for greater data rates. The hope is to be able to achieve download speeds of perhaps 10 Gbits/s.

Ming Lei of Samsung Research and Development Institute China, Lei Jiang of NEC Laboratories, both in Beijing are working with colleagues at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu, Beijing Jiaotong University and the University of Kurdistan. They have assessed the latest developments aimed at 5G systems and have proposed their own novel end-to-end (E2E) software-defined cellular network (SDCN) architecture which they say offers flexibility, scalability, agility and efficiency. Moreover, it will be sustainable for providers as well as profitable.

They are currently building a demonstration system that will allow them to utilise several promising technologies in their architecture for 5G including cloud computing, network virtualisation, network functions virtualisation and dynamic service chaining. The approach, they suggest could overcome bandwidth shortage problems, improve quality of service so avoiding delays and data loss, as well as reducing the vast number of error-prone network nodes needed for such a system.
