Justin Bieber Is Reportedly Becoming ‘the Tom Cruise’ of His Church – Complex

Justin Bieberis figuring out where to go from here. The global pop star canceled the remaining dates of his PurposeWorld Tour on Mondaydue to "unforeseen circumstances." There was immediate speculation about the reason behind the cancelation, including the possibility that he called it a day because of religious reasons. When asked by TMZif that were true, Bieber denied it, directing the site toward his earlier explanation: "I've been on tour for two years... Just resting and getting some relaxation."

While Bieber might not have canceled the tour because of a grand spiritual enlightenment, a newTMZreport indicates he isspending time working on his religious self. In particular, Bieber is being linked to Hillsong Church and its pastor, Carl Lentz. If Lentz's name sounds familiar, it's because he's also connected to Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving, who shook up the sports world last week by revealing he wants out of the Ohio squad ASAP. According toTMZ, Lentz hasn't directly told either Bieber or Irving what decisions they should make, but he has been acting in an advisory role for both men. Sources toldTMZthat Bieber's relationship with Lentz is "intense," but perhaps more interesting is a statement from one of said sources that claimed Bieber is"becoming the Tom Cruise of that church."

If you're unfamiliar, Cruise has long been the poster child of the highly controversial Church of Scientology. In a Reddit Ask Me Anything session last year, actress Leah Remini, a former Scientologist, was asked if Cruise was "the Messiah," to which she replied,"To the 'Church,' yes. Parishioners believe that he is singlehandedly changing the planet because that is what the 'Church' is telling them." So, it's definitely an interesting status to attribute to Bieber.

According to its website, Hillsong Church is a contemporary pentecostal church and a member of the Australian Christian Churches. Their mission statement is "to reach and influence the world by building a large Christ-centered, Bible-based church, changing mindsets and empowering people to lead and impact in every sphere of life."

When An Emaciated Buddha Got Juxtaposed With Many-Hued Mughals – Outlook India

The Starving Buddha popped up in contrast to the oriental ascetics usual looks defined by placid looks. Within 24 hours, the same venue discussed an antithesis of sorts: miniature art, with all its colours and celebratory mood.

If the sages eyes are commonly seen in tranquil longish shape that reminds one of a lotus petal, a two-day cultural festival in Delhi this week sought to know more about how and why Siddhartha Gautama went on a long fast in his days of experimenting oneself ahead of achieving enlightenment. This spiritual exercise of turning oneself into a living skeleton eventually led the one-time prince to realise that bodhi (awakening) had more to do with elevation of the mind and not deprivation of the body.

The July 25-26 Gunijan Sabha programmes by a Jaipur-based organisation had its focus on classical Indian music even as its just-concluded 25th edition in the national capital did take time off to take a relook at the countrys ancient and medieval visual arts. That was how the Ustad Imamuddin Khan Dagar Indian Music Art and Cultural Society held a session each on Indian sculptures and Mughal paintingson Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

The first talk on Figurative ArtA Narrative to Indian Sculptures profiled the evolution of sculpting in India since time immemorial to the more recent centuries of its imperial rule. The speaker, artist Gagan Vij, majorly essayed the variedly fascinating ways of portraying the Buddha three-dimensionally, thus showing the listeners certain lesser-known visuals of the philosophical leader who lived for 80 years from 563 BC.

Thus came the image of the Starving Buddha, which is a stone sculpture of Bodhisattva fasting as part of his tough practices in a bid to explore more about oneself. Its a masterpiece, hued from schist in 2nd Century AD, and displayed at Pakistans Lahore museum, which acquired it in 1894 not long after the 39-centimetre-tall artwork was excavated from Sikri in the deserts of Balochistan of undivided India.

One major highlight of ancient Indian art is that it never resorted to copyingthere were no models or muses. That also ensured that the works bore different proportions of the body, which also helped evolve stylistic differences, pointed out Faridabad-based Vij, a self-taught sculptor whose 2016 metal sundial is displayed not far from the Yamuna in the city.

Noting that Indian sculptors traditionally relied more on philosophy than anatomy, he said the underlying principle was to attain moksha by gaining control over anger, greed and sexual desires. The 90-minute interactive lecture at India International Centre began with tracing Indian sculpting right from the Harappan-era Bearded Priest (the famed terracotta work of a man wearing a shawl, with his eyes half closed) to the more iconic Dancing Girla 10.5-cm-tall bronze statuette, also from the Mohenjo-Daro period (4,500 years old).

Vij, whose works are at display also in Delhis Mirza Ghalib Museum and Lajpat Nagar Park, further trailed major artworks of the Vedic age (a millennium from 1500 BC, when iron gained access in sculptures as well) to the emergence of Buddhism and Jainism in two regions of the subcontinent to further introduce the various schools of art such as Mathura (1st to 3rd Century AD) and Amaravati around the same time (though slightly older) to Mauryan, Chalukya, Gupta and late medieval down to those patronised by southern dynasties such as Chera, Chola, Pandya and Kakatiya. Particularly impressive at the power-point presentation were two-picture albums of ancient temple sculptures and their modern-day adaptations as postures in classical Indian dances such as Kathak, Bharatanatyam and Odissi.

The next afternoon had a well-known Rajasthani painter in conversation about his art: Mughal miniatures. S. Shakir Ali from Jaipur spoke passionately about the bright colours used in classical Indian art, made all the more appealing with the exquisite tools its exponents employ over ages.

His deep love for the Jaipur and Kangra schools of art notwithstanding, the 61-year-old Padma awardee said Mughal paintings have been his favourite all life. Change is essential for the progress of any art so long as its practitioners have imbibed the essential spirit of the form, he added, recalling to visits to countries such as Iran, Turkey and Algeria to interact with artists.

Ali took a purists line and reiterated that an artist has to stick to three principles for professional success: clean mind, positive attitude and good company.

The Gunijan Sabha, conceived by organiser Shabana Dagar, had its latest event also featuring music sessions (flautist Ajay Prasanna, rudra veena Bahauddin Dagar and Dhrupadia Santosh Kumar, besides talks by scholars Manjula Saxena and Suneera Kasliwal), dance (lecture by Kathak danseuse Prerna Shrimali) and literary interaction (on poetry in music, by poet-essayist-critic Ashok Vajpeyi).

Review: ‘Hare Krishna!’ offers a misty-eyed look at a mystical leader – The Spokesman-Review

Srila Prabhupada, the guru whose Hare Krishna movement is examined, mostly uncritically, in a new documentary, Hare Krishna! The Mantra, the Movement and the Swami Who Started It All. (Abramorama / Abramorama)

In 1965, a 70-year-old retired pharmacist from Kolkata arrived in New York with no contacts or support and very little money. What he did bring was, depending on your point of view, either (a) spiritual enlightenment or (b) a mind-control cult that ripped susceptible middle-class teens away from their families.

The documentary Hare Krishna! The Mantra, the Movement and the Swami Who Started It All mentions both possibilities, but clearly favors the first. Filmmaker John Griesser and his co-director Lauren Ross fill the film with footage of Srila Prabhupada, the man who, in 1966, founded a religious organization called the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), and his intelligent and articulate disciples. Coverage of controversies involving ISKCON after the gurus 1977 death (including an alleged murder conspiracy) is relegated to a montage of unfavorable TV news and a Hare Krishna gag from Airplane II.

For viewers who arent hostile to mysticism, vegetarianism and endless chanting, its a stirring story. Prabhupada arrived at a pivotal moment in American culture, setting up shop in a Lower East Side storefront behind a sign promising Matchless Gifts. He was soon communing with George Harrison, members of the Grateful Dead and Allen Ginsburg, who is shown singing Hare Krishna to a smirking William F. Buckley Jr. The swamis goal was simple, he explained: To see everyone happy. But how tricky a goal that can be.

Fasting’s folly: Research shows it’s not more effective than reducing … – Allentown Morning Call

From ancient Greece to some of the world's main religions, fasting has long been promoted as a path to spiritual enlightenment. In the early 1900s, fasting took on an important role in medicine; it was used by physicians to treat everything from diabetes to epilepsy.

The practice has experienced a recent resurgence in the weight-loss world, thanks to the popularity of diets such as Lean Gains, the 5:2 Diet and Eat Stop Eat. These diets each recommend different types of fasting that can range from not eating anything for a full 24 hours to dramatically limiting calories a couple of days a week.

The promise? Proponents of intermittent fasting say it will help you shed fat, build muscle, lower your risk of cancer and heart disease and even make you live longer. But do these diets really work better than typical weight-loss plans?

We can all agree: Dieting isn't fun. Sticking to a plan day after day makes dieters feel like there's no end in sight, and it's only a matter of time until they cave and go off the rails.

With intermittent fasting, it's almost as though you get to be on a part-time diet. Sure, there will be days of restriction, but they're always interspersed among higher-calorie days where you can eat what you crave (within reason). This seems to be the appeal for many dieters.

The skinny on fasts

Here's what the science reveals so far for the three major types of intermittent fasting diets.

Alternate-day fasting: Don't eat for 24 hours and then eat "normally" the next 24 hours (example: Eat Stop Eat).

There isn't any evidence to show that alternate-day fasting has a benefit over other types of diets. Only three small studies have been done on this type of diet, and none of them had a comparison or control group for benchmarking.

Although one study demonstrated an average weight loss of 2.5 percent over 22 days, the participants reported being very hungry on fasting days, and this didn't get better over time.

Modified fasting: Eat a quarter of the calories you need in a day (about 500) on two nonconsecutive days of the week and eat a normal diet the rest of the week (example: 5:2 Diet).

There are three studies on modified fasting in overweight and obese individuals that have a comparison group (either 1,200-1,500 calories per day or three-quarters of calorie needs). Only one of the studies found that the fasting group lost 4.1 percent more weight than the comparison group.

Blood sugar levels weren't significantly different between the fasting and comparison groups in any of the studies, but insulin levels were lower in the fasting group in two of the studies. (High insulin levels encourage your body to store more fat, especially around your waistline.)

Time-restricted feeding: This diet pattern extends your nighttime fast from 12 to 20 hours so you have less time to eat and eat fewer meals during the day (example: Lean Gains).

There have been two small studies on time-restricted feeding in people. In one study, 29 men with normal body mass index followed a nighttime fast of 11 hours or more for two weeks and also spent two weeks following a regular eating schedule. During the fasting period, the men lost 1.3 percent more than in the control period.

Another study looked at the impact of having only one meal a day in the afternoon for eight weeks in 15 adults with a healthy body mass index and found they lost 2.1 kg of fat compared with losing no weight or fat when they ate the same amount of calories divided over three meals a day. Not surprisingly, when the participants were eating one meal a day, they reported feeling much hungrier in the morning.

No obvious benefits

Overall, intermittent fasting diets don't seem to be any better than daily calorie reduction for promoting weight loss or health. A review of all of the research studies that have compared intermittent fasting to daily calorie reduction found that in the intermittent fasting groups, people lost 3 to 8 percent of their weight over three to 24 weeks while daily calorie reduction led to weight loss of 4 to 14 percent over six to 24 weeks.

Fat loss, insulin and blood sugar levels also weren't any better in the intermittent fasting groups compared to daily calorie reduction.

No harmful effects of intermittent fasting have been reported in studies in healthy adults. Still, these studies are of small groups of people and are short-term. The research has also ignored the impact of intermittent fasting on exercise habits, sleep quality and diet quality. I can guarantee that meeting all of your nutrient needs in one meal a day is impossible, making the longevity of such a diet questionable and even risky.

If you have a medical condition, are taking medications, have diabetes or problems with blood sugar control, are underweight or have a history of disordered eating, speak to your physician and dietitian before trying a fasting diet. If you're pregnant or breast-feeding, intermittent fasting isn't a good diet for you.

As promised, intermittent fasting appears to promote weight loss and improve metabolic parameters, but it doesn't seem to be as effective as the tried and true method of moderate calorie reduction on a day-to-day basis.

Limiting the amount of time you spend eating via intermittent fasting may help you eat fewer calories and result in weight loss over time. It all depends on what type of routine works best for you. Some people find they get hungry frequently or struggle with drops in blood sugar levels during the day, which makes smaller, frequent meals a better option for them.

The common concern with fasting is that people may be prone to overeating on non-fasting days. Surprisingly, the research doesn't suggest that this happens. Whether this type of diet works for you probably depends on your personality, lifestyle and eating preferences.

Brissette, a freelance writer for The Washington Post, also is a dietitian, foodie and president of 80TwentyNutrition.com.

A fasting diet can range from not eating anything for a full 24 hours to dramatically limiting calories a couple of days a week.

The Spiritual Mission of America’s Founding Fathers – CBN News

In Gods unchanging order, a nations security is determined by means of seeking virtue. Solomon advised: Covenant loyalty and truth preserve the king and by righteousness, his throne is upheld. (1) Loyalty and fidelity to Jehovah safeguard the nation.

Solomon went on to say that Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. (2) Other proverbs herald virtue as the prescription to maintain the stability, prosperity, and liberty of a nation. The glory of a nation lies in its righteousness, not its military prowess or Gross Domestic Product.

Thus, the Biblical foundation devised by Americas Founders achieved unprecedented stability, prosperity, and liberty produced by the institutions and policies based on concepts, such as God-given inalienable rights, individualism, limited government, full republicanism, separation of powers, and an educated and virtuous citizenry. (3) Where do you suppose the Founders happened upon these unique ideas?

Dr. Daniel L. Dreisbach writes, The first English settlers in New England were engaged in building Bible commonwealths; accordingly, they looked to the Bible in establishing political and legal institutions. The Bible was often the explicit basis of early colonial codes, and colonial judges frequently cited Scripture as legal authority. And the work of these legal craftsmen gives evidence that they were well acquainted with the Bible. (4)

Following an extensive survey of American political literature from 1760 to 1805, political scientist Donald S. Lutz reported that the Bible was referenced more frequently than any European writer or even any European school of thought, such as the Enlightenment or Whig intellectual traditions. Indeed the Bible accounted for about one-third of all citations in his sample. According to Lutz, Deuteronomy is the most frequently cited book, followed by Montesquieus The Spirit of the Laws. (5)

It would be difficult to overstate the importance of the role that the Book of Deuteronomy played in the life, law and culture in American history. That said, when is the last time that one heard a sermon from the Book of Deuteronomy? Or studied the Book of Deuteronomy? Moses pointed out in the Book of Deuteronomy the way forward for America: one route leads to life, health, and blessings, the other to sickness, curse, and death. (6)

American wasnt founded upon secularism, paganism, or religious neutrality. Yet secularists, steeped in public education and higher learning, advance the notion that the birth of America happened by chance; just a lucky role of the dice. Os Guinness explains the defect in the underpinnings of Secularism:

Freedom requires a framework of order, which means restraint, yet the only restraint proper to freedom is self-restraint, which freedom undermines.

Freedom can no more take a holiday from history than from gravity, the plain fact is that it is harder to be free than to not be free, for freedoms fire has not only to be lit once but must be kindled and rekindled all over again in each succeeding generation. How else are we to understand the fact that freedom never lasts and that freedom always becomes the greatest enemy of freedom? (7)

Americas Founders believed that they were on a spiritual mission as they deposited Christianity in the New World. For two and a half centuries, orchestrated by the Divine, they stoked virtue as the way to establish righteousness in the public square. Righteousness is the key component of freedom.

For the last three generations or so, every vestige of the once dominant Christian content in public education has been blotted out. Government established their own religion in 1963, antithetic to the views, values, politics, and culture of Biblical Christianity. America now drifts aimlessly, void of the engine that established, and then produced, the greatest rise and most advanced society in the history of the world.

A favorite story in American history is of George Washington. He recorded in his diary on Wednesday, June 1, 1774, Went to church, fasted all day. (8) What happened on that day in 1774?

Well, as a result of the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773, the British responded with the Boston Port Act, blockading Bostons harbor on June 1, 1774.

Supposed Deist Thomas Jefferson introduced A Day of Fasting and Prayer into the Virginia House of Burgesses on May 24, 1774, imploring, Divine interposition, for averting the heavy calamity which threatens destruction to our civil rights

George Washington spent thatWednesday fasting and praying for America. Two centuries ago, prayer and tears were celebrated by Americas political leaders as the weapons of Heaven.

Evangelicals now find themselves battling in a two-fronted war:

1) The battle with secular Leftists in the Democrat Party, who treat orthodox Christians as second-class citizens (9); embodied by Senator Bernie Sanders. Bernie might require a refresher course in civics.

2) Republican Party establishment chieftains and lieutenants, who run as principled conservatives to be elected, only then to govern as Obama-lite moderates; embodied by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Paul Ryan.

The good news is that Gideons and Rahabs are beginning to stand. Men and women of Issachar are hustling to the public square, a Resurrection is on the way.

David Lane is Founder of the American Renewal Project

(6) Deuteronomy 30:19-20, I call on heaven and earth as witnesses today that I have offered you life or death, blessings or curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants will live.Love the LORD your God, obey him, and be loyal to him. This will be your way of life, and it will mean a long life for you in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

An abode of spirituality: Tiruvayyaru – The Hans India

Tiruvayyaru is a place of great musical and spiritual significance not only for Tamil Nadu but for the entire world of Carnatic music lovers. However, the most admired place wears a deserted look

It had been my long-cherished dream to visit Tiruvayyaru in Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu, ever since I heard a lot about it from the speeches of lovers of music in Hyderabad and elsewhere. But to my astonishment, it was quite different from what I dreamed about it.

I imagined the small village to be a place where there would be intense musical activity daily, with special programmes on auspicious or important occasions. I visited the temple with a view to take a dip in the lore of music. But alas! Ones travels will be only travails in vain to such a distant place from various corners of the country to visit the temple of the Saint and only to be returned disappointed.

Saint Sri Tyagaraja lived at the five river kshetram known as Tiruvayyaru in Tanjore district for about 80 years worshipping his favourite deity Sri Rama for whom he had immense devotion. The saint composed 24,000 keerthanas on Lord Rama describing various aspects of the story of the Lord.

The place has become sacred and world famous since the Saint had the audience of Lord Rama after he recited the Lord's name for 96 crore times. In January 1847 on Pushya Bahula Panchami tithi, Saint Tyagaraja attained salvation at the banks of the sacred river Cauvery.

Sri Tyagaraja Sarma, son of the great grandson of Saint Tyagaraja now resides near the temple and performs daily worship in the temple. Beyond this, there is no other programme that satisfies the staunch lovers of the saints compositions. The only event conducted is the seven-day programme ending the Pushya Bahula Panchami every year when musicians from all over the country reach Tiruvayyaru and render Pancharatna Kritis en mass.

Devotional music has a profound influence on human mind unlike any other form of art. That is why great seers who regarded recitation of Gods name as the most potent means of salvation not only practised Nada yoga but have also made a significant contribution to the progress of this cult.

Of these, Tyagaraja of the universal fame, the greatest of the exponents of the classical Karnataka music is an outstanding one. He provided a rich musical medium for this method of worship. Such a great spiritual leader and musical genius who enjoys reputation all over the world is least known or popular in the small sleeping village called Tiruvayyaru, where Tyagaraja lived and attained communion with Lord Sri Rama.

Tyagaraja in his compositions relates the truths of the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita and handed over to mankind the story of Rama in a musical form. He is one of the long-line of torch bearers of spiritual enlightenment like Jayadeva, Purandaradasa et al born right from the times of Rig Veda. He occupies a unique place among the best representatives of the Indian hymnology.

Does he not deserve to be remembered daily through a rendition of his compositions in the temple dedicated to him in Tiruvayyaru, on the banks of the sacred river Cauvery in Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu?

Tiruvayyaru is a place of great musical and spiritual significance not only for Tamil Nadu but for the entire south and the world of Carnatic music lovers. The organisers of music festivals or music concerts in the entire South India may organise similar concerts monthly, if not daily, in the temple of Tyagaraja in Tiruvayyaru to perpetuate the great musical traditions of India.

Inner Peace: Characteristics of an Enlightened Soul – Ashland Daily Tidings

By Jim Hatton

"The Enlightened Soul is not one to whom the Truth has been revealed, but one who has summoned it; and not just when theyve been driven by pain, but when lifes seas were as calm as glass."

Notes from the Universe

I like to refer to an Enlightened Soul as a Spiritual Master. To become an Enlightened Soul or Spiritual Master has nothing to do with what type of clothes you wear, where you live, what you eat, what particular mantra you recite, what religion or guru you follow or who you hang out with. A Spiritual Master is one who has done the work to examine their own consciousness and thought structures extensively, and has let go of what limits or no long serves them.

Spiritual philosophies, spiritual teachers, meditation, mantras, etc. can play a large role to assist you on your path to become a Spiritual Master (which, by the way, the becoming never ends), but all these wonderful teachings and teachers are not the journey itself. It is the inner work that sets us free from the limitation of the mind and of the physical. As Joel Goldsmith states, it is a Conscious courting of the Divine.

There are those to whom Truth or Enlightenment has been revealed in a single experience or series of intense spiritual experiences. It seems as it was given to them by some sort of favoritism or religious bias. That is impossible, as the Divines nature is unconditional love and favoritism implies conditional love; this is simply not the case. Those with a seemingly sudden enlightenment are at some level open and ready to receive and sometimes have trouble dealing with it in the socially structured ego consciousness.

Truth is revealed to those who are ready to receive and embody it. Truth is revealed to most of us in steps or small awakenings or what is called Satori(s). What is revealed is in exact proportion as to what we are ready to receive in consciousness.

We are not open and ready to receive when our mind is blocked with false beliefs such as superstition, fear, religiosity, social conditioning, dogma, a sense of separation, etc. It is our spiritual task to consciously endeavor to examine and release all of the limitations in our mind and be open to receive. The stream of awareness cannot flow through a clogged vessel.

It is a common understanding that pain, sorrow and suffering is the doorway to an enlightened soul and many speak of a broken-open heart that leads to love. This is a common experience. It is true that pain and suffering can be a catalyst to experience something greater. It is in this desperation of ones Dark Night of the Soul that can we finally start to release the constraining thoughts and beliefs that have been limiting us.

The good news is that we do not have to experience and walk through the Dark Night of the Soul over and over again to expand our consciousness. Sudden awakenings or Satori are common when we allow ourselves to have a calm peaceful mind or when we are deeply inspired by beauty, music, or nature. A spiritual experience happens when our conscious limitations are set aside, even temporarily by an intense focus on inspirational ideas and events.

We can ready ourselves with inspirational readings, enlightened teachers and spiritual practices. It is the application of these understandings in the self-examination of our own consciousness that leads us to a greater awareness-and a sense of inner peace. This is what has been called The Great Work.

Enjoy your Journey .

Matty J. Moose’s Gathering of the Juggalos Survival Guide – Phoenix New Times

Ask Juggalos when they first heard Insane Clown Posse, and chances are good they will recount the moment like it was a predestined experience that led to some kind of spiritual enlightenment.

Thats one way Juggalos are no different than any other obsessed music fan face paint, hatchet man, and Faygo aside.

Juggalo culture and events like the annual music festival called Gathering of the Juggalos provide fans with a voice and sense of community.

WhenMatty J. "Moose" Rzemykdiscovered ICP at 14, it was about gaining an identity for the first time.

"Im just a clown; Ive always been a clown," he says. "So when I found this music that, the music itself had the element of that piece of myself already in it.It was very easy to identify and say, No, this is what I am. Im not a metal head, Im not a rocker, Im not a punk, Im not a thug, Im not a nerd, Im not a jock, Im not a prep, Im a Juggalo.'"

Now,Rzemykis thebassist of Arizona comedy metal band Psychostickand its only Juggalo member. He's attended 11 of the 18 Gatherings.

The band will perform at the 18th annual Gathering of the Juggalos, scheduled for July 26 through 29 in Oklahoma City.

Psychostick isn't a Juggalo band, since they're not signed to ICP's Psychopathic Records, but they are Juggalo-friendly.

We have kind of a shared familiarity between Juggalos and Psychostick fans: Were kind of nerdy, were not necessarily the cool kids, were not trying to be cool, we like making fun of ourselves, we dont take this shit too seriously,Rzemyksays.

Historically, the Gathering of the Juggalos doesn't have the best reputation. Originally, it was held at a convention center (now it's held outdoors). The first five years saw riots. There have been questionable beauty pageants hosted by Ron Jeremy. None of which helped boost Juggalo culture's image.

Juggalos are very condescended by society," Rzemyk says. "Were considered low-lifes, trailer trash, white trash, dropouts, that kind of thing. Which isnt completely unfounded

Even though Rzemykno longer shows off his Juggalo status by how he dresses, he does know more than most people about the Gathering. So New Timesmet up with him to get a few tips for first-timers and those looking to make the most of their experience at the Gathering of the Juggalos. Here's his advice.

Don't try this at home.

Nate "Igor" Smith

Festival Camping 101 Set up your tents where there is shade in the mornings (when youll be in them sleeping) not the afternoon. The sun comes up in the east, so shadows will cast to the west. Familiarize yourself with the map of the area, he advises, and read the program beforehand and to make a plan. Your cellphone will probably fail you at some point, so wear a good old-fashioned watch. Bring a mattress pad and a pillow, because you never know what the ground situation is going to be like. Dont sleep in your car. Dont bring anything you would miss if you didnt come home with it. Bring sandals for the showers.

BYO Everything If you feel like drinking or partying in other ways, bring it with you, because the prices are insane at The Gathering, he says. There are quality food and beverage vendors at the festival, he says, but prices might seem steep to some. If youre ballin on a budget, pack everything you will need to nourish yourself. Unlike a lot of festivals, you can bring a lot of things into this festival except glass.

Drive To The Gathering In An Unmarked Car Its very common to get pulled over and searched," he says. "A lot of Juggalos have stickers on their car. Theyre playing a lot of really loud music, and we all kind of look weird. If you go to rural Oklahoma, thats going to be weird. The cops are going to be like what the fuck and theyre going to profile the shit out out you.Rzemyk says herents a car to avoid this altogether.

Understand The Value Of Good Face Paint, And Make-Up Remover When it comes to face paint, you get what you pay for," he says. "If you go to the Dollar Store and you see that cute little picture of a clown, something that youd paint your 5-year-old's face with, its going to be water-based. Youre going to sweat it right off If youre really into the face paint, the oil-based paint that [ICP] actually use will stay on through the Faygo showers and everything else. I actually use eyeliner. Its a pencil and it takes a bit longer to put on, but you can do crazier designs with it. Its kind of shitty to have to take off at the end of the night.

Which is why you might want to invest in makeup remover. It sounds a little bit funny, but it will pay off at the end of the night when youre drunk and high and you want to go to sleep and not get face paint all over your bed.

Know the Basics of the Lingo "Down": the period of time when you considered and self-identified as a Juggalo Neden: slang for vagina Ninja: similar to a homie or brother Cotton Candy: another term for female pubic hair Whoop Whoop: a common greeting, a farewell, celebration, a cheer of approval Honk for Sugar: fandom saying from an ICP feature film where someone shouts it as they're driving and everyone honks their horn

Move in Packs Its very common to see people move in packs and groups of people," he says. "Its very common to see groups of three to 10 people sticking together and walking round. Everybody has their crew, everybody has who they came with.

He notes that while many people come in crews based on geographical origin, the Gathering has many open camps for people not traveling with large groups.

Be Prepared to See Some Shit Be ready for anything," he says. "Youre going to see shit at The Gathering that you never thought you would see. Theres going to be some weird crazy shit and every year, almost every day I say to myself, if I see something I say 'only at The Gathering.'

Ladies, People Are Going to Ask to See Your Boobs Juggalo newbies and younger kids may ask you to show your tits, kind of a lot. "If you dont want to show your shit, thats your choice,"Rzemykadvises. "Be yourself No one can really fuck with you for that.

Read on for more tips for attending the Gathering of the Juggalos.

Be Prepared to Get Sprayed with Faygo, Possibly Other Items at the Main Stage If youre going to watch ICP [in the pit], theyre going to throw soda. Theyre going to throw the Faygo all over the place. So if you dont feel like getting wet. Which I dont recommend I recommend you get wet, I recommend you get in the Faygo shower because its quite an experience.

He also notes that you may see other things flying around the crowd in the bit, too. One year one of the bands said, Okay everybody reach down and grab a piece of trash and throw it ... and it was just a cloud of shit hovering over the crowd, it was pretty unbelievable.

Stop By Big Silva, and Leave Your Mark They started a ball of duct tape, and they just kept wrapping duct tape around this ball. They named him Big Silva, and its grown, and grown and grown and this thing is a goddamn boulder at this point. You cant even lift it. If you see Big Silva its kind of a tradition, if you have duct tape, to add to Big Silva.

People will get customized duct tape to add their special mark too. One year, my friends and I all wore purple, so I got a role of purple duct tape to add to it Its just this weird, pointless thing we have in our culture for no reason.

Hitch a Ride in a Customized Juggalo Golf-Cart Limo or Grocery Cart Some people will customize golf carts and drive these custom Juggalo golf-carts around. Theyre almost like a limo. A couple of years ago somebody brought a customized hot rod shopping cart from a grocery store. They beefed it up, they put giant tires on it. They spray painted the whole thing neon orange, they had LEDs on it. It was in the pit, people were climbing on it

Jeff Hardy backstage after his match at Bloodymania 10.

Nate "Igor" Smith

Check Out a Juggalo ChampionshipWrestling (JCW) Match Thats grown with the ICP for years and years and years. Theres definitely a big cross in that Venn diagram between wrestling fans and Juggalos. Theres a lot of wrestling fans in the Juggalo community, so JCW gets pretty popular, especially at night. They have tryouts during the day and fun little games like get in the ring and beat your buddy up for a couple of minutes.

When the show starts at night,Rzemykincludes it as a must to at least attend once. Even if you dont like wrestling, if its not your style and youve never watched wrestling in your life, its kind accepted there that you dont have to know whats going on.

Dont Miss the Main Stage Performances Anyone on the main stage is worth checking out.

Fuck Yo Sleep Is a Reality You Must Accept You will be woken up by megaphones in the middle of the night. Theres an old and tried and true mantra in the middle of the night that people shout fuck yo sleep. It kind of came off of the Dave Chappelle, Rick James fuck your couch, Charlie Murphy.

But seriously, if you want to sleep, bring ear plugs.

Try at Least One Late-Night Party Even if you dont want to stay. If theres a foam party, go get foamed-up for five minutes and walk out if you dont like it. But at least give it a shot.

Make Sure You Drink Water Between All the Faygo and Booze I think its easy to forget how much water the body actually needs, especially when youre surrounded by beer, whiskey, and Faygo the Juggalo drink of choice.

Always have a crate of water bottles in the car. You never know what's going to happen, you might need to wash your hands, or put out a fire as much beer as youre getting, make sure youre getting that much water.

Most importantly, he says, "just fucking do it."

‘Nashville’ Recap: Scarlett Faces Heartbreak, Maddie and Juliette Clash – RollingStone.com

As always, if you have yet to watch this week's Nashville, proceed with caution, spoilers below.

Country songs, especially those of the classic, traditional variety, are rife with heartache, tears and, sometimes, tragedy. This week's episode of Nashville combined all of those elements quite beautifully in Scarlett's heartbreaking miscarriage after she and Gunnar were mugged. Kudos to Clare Bowen for conveying the entire emotional spectrum of such a loss. As Gunnar, Sam Palladio returned to the angry young man we saw early in the show's history. Enraged and hopelessly lost, even the doctor's assurance that the mugging wasn't the reason she lost her baby couldn't quell his anger and need for revenge.

As Scarlett just wants to be left alone to grieve, Gunnar tells Will he should have done more to protect her. He drives around in East Nashville and finds him, proceeding to beat the living daylights out of the guy, but stopping before he goes too far. Nothing will bring the baby back and nothing he does seems to comfort Scarlett, who decides that she should let him go because she doesn't want him to wait around for her to figure herself out. Avery calls him to talk and invites him out on the road. He tells Scarlett he needs to figure out who he is, too, and takes off for Texas.

Prior to visiting Scarlett and Gunnar in the hospital, Deacon had received a call from manager Hank Morris about Jessie Caine. Deacon informs Jessie he'll be calling to invite Hank to her Bluebird show. Later, she's at the Bluebird and Deacon calls to tell her that because of being at the hospital with Scarlett, he never had a chance to call Hank again. Although Scarlett had told Deacon and Gunnar that she didn't want anyone to know about the miscarriage, Jessie goes to Scarlett's and leaves a gift. Scarlett invites her in to talk and Jessie tells her she had been through the experience twice. She brings her raspberry leaf tea, calcium tablets and the new Ghostbusters DVD because she figures she needs something as a distraction probably better than giving her a box set of Friday Night Lights, which has an actress who looks an awful lot like Rayna Jaymes. They talk about their shared experience and Jessie tells Scarlett that she had to forgive herself before she could even start grieving. Then they start laughing about incompetent cervixes and Scarlett envisions a poor little cervix sitting in the corner wearing a dunce cap. Deacon shows up, however, putting an end to the laughter and curious to know why Jessie showed up there. When she tells him about her two miscarriages, that puts an end to that discussion. So much about Jessie Caine remains a mystery and we have a hunch she will figure prominently in the upcoming season finale.

Juliette has a hit single with "Water Rising" but her guilty conscience about stealing the song from Maddie is not letting her enjoy it much. Zach suggests Juliette drop by the Wildhorse during Maddie's show, but as if that's not enough awkwardness, Zach suggests that she sing with Maddie during her show. He also invites Travis Stroud, the song's writer, to the promo party to celebrate the song and invites Maddie, too. Juliette gets flowers from Travis and tells him she can get him into a Beck show at the Ryman, which just happens to be the same night as the party, which she assures him will be boring. The spiritual enlightenment she went through after the plane crash is in serious need of a tune-up.

Maddie welcomes Juliette to the stage but Juliette is uncomfortable and distant throughout their performance, barely making eye contact with Maddie. It's like a country-music version of Edgar Allan Poe's "TheTell-Tale Heart." Later, Juliette tries to convince her everything's fine, but once Travis shows up, all hell breaks loose. Juliette convinces Maddie that she's sick and needs to go home, but first Maddie spots Travis and introduces herself, immediately confusing the both of them when he says something about Maddie passing on the recording. Maddie storms back into the party and goes off, soaking Juliette with a face full of a Watermelon Rising cocktail. Not exactly a Joan Collins-Linda Evans-on-Dynasty-style catfight but the cost of Juliette's actions is starting to come back to haunt her.

Glenn encourages Juliette to bury the hatchet with Maddie before the details of their splashy encounter hits the headlines. She goes to visit Maddie, who doesn't want to see her, but when Deacon asks her about it she says she wants to handle it on her own, which is a very Rayna thing to do. "I know how Juliette can get," Deacon says. We do, too, and frankly the show could probably use a little more of it at this point.

At the fundraiser, Jessie tells Deacon she doesn't want to sign with Highway 65, and Scarlett lets Daphne and Maddie know about her miscarriage. She then takes the stage where she tells everyone in the crowd about it before a performance that ranks among Bowen's best in the show's history. The entire storyline is an important one, nicely written (a trademark of so many of the classic series' from Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick) and beautifully realized in Bowen's devastating performance.

A Diva Who Is Not Above Walking 3100 Miles – New York Times

But her biggest challenge so far is this Queens race, known as the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3,100 Mile Race, which organizers call the longest certified foot race in the world.

There are six male and four female entrants, and all are runners except Ms. Holder. She says walking is less wearing and fatiguing than running, so she can get by with only a 15-minute nap or two, and continue logging miles until midnight to meet a daily average of about 60 miles required over the races 52 days to complete the 3,100 miles, well beyond the distance from New York to Los Angeles.

Its the tortoise and the hare, man, said Shamus Babcock, who volunteers to help Ms. Holder with snacks and drinks. You have nine hares and one tortoise.

Ms. Holder laughed at this and repeated one of her mantras.

I like to say, I walk, you run, we both get it done, she said, but then allowed that, At night, my competitive side comes out.

I tell everyone, Watch your back because Im gaining on you, she said.

So far in the race, which began on June 18 and is scheduled to finish on Aug. 8, Ms. Holder has walked about 1,900 miles in in 33 days, sleeping only three and a half hours a night.

The race is organized by the followers of the Indian spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy, who died in 2007. His disciples remain devout and continue to practice his teachings of extreme physical feats of endurance and achievement as a path to spiritual enlightenment and transcendence.

Nine of this years 10 entrants are disciples of Mr. Chinmoy. Ms. Holder is not, but she was invited to participate because of her impressive athletic rsum, showing that she had mastered the ability to withstand the mental and physical torture to have a shot at completing the race, said Sahishnu Szczesiul, a race director.

Among the onlookers recently was Ashrita Furman, a disciple of Mr. Chinmoy.

Shes not a disciple, but she has that feeling of self-transcendence, said Mr. Furman, who is not an ultramarathoner but is rather the worlds foremost record-breaker. He holds the record for having the most Guinness World Records, having set more than 600, from pogo stick-jumping to underwater unicycling.

Mr. Babcock, an ultramarathoner himself, said that for Ms. Holder, Its a personal journey, but its still a race.

Shes humble and very nice, but shes as fierce a competitor as anybody out there, said Mr. Babcock, laying a towel on the concrete so that Ms. Holder could lie down for a few minutes to take a short nap.

Her body will not stay down for more than that, he said. If the race is on, shes moving.

Ms. Holder, who is married with two grown children, began walking after her parents died from complications related to diabetes. She said she walked to honor them and to raise health and fitness awareness.

At age 50 she decided she would try to enter 50 marathons in 50 weeks, she said, and has completed two, or sometimes three, marathons per week.

The Walking Diva said she would have to repeat some of her outfits because luggage limitations required that she bring only 30 of them to the Queens race. To prepare, Ms. Holder said she spent months walking 30 miles a day in her neighborhood, but nothing really prepares you for it.

She has continued, through heat waves and harrowing humidity, through rainstorms and various injuries, including mental stress. Bouts with dehydration, a stomach virus and numerous blisters have slowed but not stopped her. She noted that she had completed marathons on sprained ankles and with broken ribs.

On a recent day she walked past handball courts and Bengali teenagers playing cricket on the asphalt playground, and past a driver who parked his yellow cab to do some walking on the racecourse.

She said hello to some passers-by, but mostly maintained a calm concentration and a steady gait. Unlike many runners, Ms. Holder shuns headphones, opting instead for meditation and prayer while walking.

The main thing is just believing in myself and accomplishing what I set out to do, she said, adding that she is also inspired by her past failures.

Of roughly 540 distance races, she has failed to finish only five times, she said. She said she took the printed documentation of those disappointing results and framed them to display at home.

Everyone knows that when Yolanda sets out to do something, she accomplishes it, she said about her own toughness. If I dont finish this race, something went wrong.

A version of this article appears in print on July 21, 2017, on Page A20 of the New York edition with the headline: A Racewalkers Stats From Start to Finish: 3,100 Miles, 52 Days, 30 Outfits.

Chosen Gospel Recovery Ministry Gives Back by Helping God’s Peopl – Lasentinel

Chosen Gospel Recovery Groupincludes (from left) Briana Barr, Co-PastorCookie Brown, founding PastorDarlene Watley, CFOTami Poindexter andLindsay Lee. (File Photo)

For many years, the Rev. Darlene Watley desired to make a tangible difference in the lives of people, particularly those who affected by substance abuse, homelessness and mental illness.

As a person in recovery, she had first-hand experience in surviving a disease that can swallow your life, destroy your outlook and drown you in depression. But, thanks to the help of others, she turned her life around and wanted to help others achieve that same stability.

So, in 2002, Watley decided to transform her dream into reality by starting Chosen Gospel Recovery Ministries and 15 years later, the nonprofit is changing lives all around South Los Angeles.

ChosenGospelRecovery offers person-to-person outreach to the homeless and addicted, transitional housing for single women & women and children, and spiritual enlightenment to the lost and confused. The groups educational component provides various skill-building training in communication, conflict resolution and eliminating risky behavior.

Describing her fulfillment since founding the ministry, Watley declared, Its a desire of mine to give back to my community and this is the most rewarding thing Ive ever done in my life besides giving birth to my five daughters. To serve others is the most rewarding thing I could have ever accomplished.

Watley, who also serves as pastor of Faithful Zion First Fruits Ministry, utilizes space attached to the church building to run Chosen Gospel Recoverys programs. The campus contains a sanctuary, a daycare and seven rooms attached to the edifice where women and children can reside for up to a year.

We reunify women with their children through our program. We get DCFS cases closed. We educate and empower our women to understand things, like risky behavior, that caused their homelessness. We help them build skills and we work with them hand-in-hand, she explained.

The housing divisions are named Rubys House I, II and III, after a woman with the same name who Watley said took me in during my darkest hour, loved me with the love of Christ and pointed me in the direction of recovery. My program is designed on my experiences with her.

Music is another arm of Chosen Gospel Recovery. Singing gospel recovery songs in a variety of styles, Watley and group members regularly appear at churches and social events around Southern California. Also, every October, they are featured performers on the Wave stage at the Taste of Soul, L.A.s largest family festival.

The music ministry is where we are able to open up the portals of peoples soul to minister to them through songs, many of them that weve written and vocally arranged ourselves, said Watley, who added that Chosen Gospel Recovery recently released a new CD of their music.

In addition, spiritual nourishment takes place via Faithful Zion First Fruits Ministrys Sunday worship services and weekly Bible Study and prayer meeting. Choir rehearsal and liturgical dance practice also occur during the week.

Our members are people that were non-believers, out of the church, from different religions, different cultures, bound up by drugs and alcohol, suffering from mental illness all of the people that society says are throwaways and they were stigmatized by that. But theyre up in here praising God and serving one another. Thats what God wants us to do, she shared.

To keep the all of the ministrys programs operating, Watley credits the assistance of her co-pastor, the Rev. Carolyn Cookie Brown, and Faithful Zion First Fruits ministerial team who share their talents and expertise in several capacities. As for funding, Chosen Gospel Recovery organizes fundraisers as well as accepts financial donations and contributions of items like furniture, blankets, towels and toiletries. Sponsorships and mentorships are available as well to aid youth and college students.

This ministry is the Great Commission in full effect. This is what the Bible tells us to do, said Watley. Our statement of faith is based on Acts 2:42-47. They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowshipped to the breaking of bread and prayer. Thats what we really practice here.

Chosen Gospel Recovery Ministries is located at 3939 W. Slauson Ave., in Los Angeles. For information or to volunteer or donate, call (323) 244-6902.

‘Destiny’ leads Napan to change careers – Napa Valley Register

Aaron Lockhart said his favorite thing about being a financial adviser at Edward Jones Investments, is the ability to help people worry less.

When you can take some worry out of their future just by educating them. And helping his clients make financial planning decisions, it really is a fantastic feeling, he said.

This year, Lockhart moved his family from Roseville to Napa to join his fathers Edward Jones office.

1. What was your first job?

Grocery bagger at the Shasta View Market in Redding.

2. How did you get into this business/industry?

I am the fourth person in my family to serve the Napa community as an Edward Jones financial advisor.

My father, Bill Lockhart, spent years trying to recruit me, but I had a great career in senior management at Penguin Random House.

Its based in New York but they have a small division thats partly based in Roseville called Prima Games. They published books on video games and popular entertainment. I did all the licensing for them for different franchises like Pokmon and Star Wars. I was there for 10 years. It was a really fun job.

My father will retire next year (and) Im taking over for him. I finally accepted my destiny and made the leap.

3. Your cousin, Robert Lockhart, and his father, Bob Lockhart, (since retired) have an Edward Jones office in Napa. Do people ever get you all mixed up?

Sometimes people come into the wrong office but we try to keep everyone going to the right places.

Its the only partnership left on Wall Street. The firm is owned by the employees.

Its a fantastic career. And we saw how my uncle paved the way and we decided to come along. Its worked out nicely for everyone in the family.

5. Whats a common misconception you get about your work?

I think the biggest thing is that people think they need a certain amount of wealth to be able to work with a financial advisor.

We dont work that way. Its never too late to sit down and work out your plan. Theres plenty of help available.

6. If you could change one thing about your business/industry, what would it be?

We need to find more smart, caring and honest people who want to become financial advisors. Far too many people today are not adequately prepared for unexpected events or retirement and they need our help.

7. Whats on your to-do list?

Travel the world with my family, attain spiritual enlightenment and remodel the bathroom.

8. What is one thing you hope to accomplish in your lifetime that you havent yet?

Play golf without embarrassing myself.

9. Whats something people might be surprised to know about you?

I spent a semester in college in Costa Rica working as a teacher at an elementary school.

10. What was your childhood ambition?

To get to that phase in my life where I have a virtually unlimited amount of quarters to spend in the video arcade. (Ive since updated my life goals.)

Goodbye, Age of Enlightenment. Hello, chaos. – iPolitics.ca (subscription)

One of the pleasures of these high days of summer is sitting in the shade, with a glass of something cool nearby, thinking about the Peace of Westphalia.

Its clear now that the three pillars of modern world the nation state, capitalism and liberalism erected by that set of treaties in 1648 arefast falling apart. The decay has been going on for some time, of course, but some future historians will say with absolute confidence that the Age of Enlightenment came to a conclusive end on November 8, 2016, when the flawed United States electoral system produced its current administration.

It has had a good run.

The primary task of this bundle of treaties signed nearly 400 years ago was to end the Thirty Years War between Catholics and Protestants in the tattered remnants of Europes Holy Roman Empire. In addition, they drew a line under the Eighty Years War of the Dutch Republic seeking independence from Spain.

As they did so, the draughtsmen of these treaties also produced the European concept of the nation state, and created rulers who were increasingly answerable to and, eventually, chosen by their citizens.

In seeking to end the religious wars between Protestants and Catholics, the treaties enshrined freedom of religion into law. The idea was imperfectly applied, as the world knows full well, but it played its part in the later creation of egalitarian societies and, eventually, modern liberalism.

Many historians argue that freeing Protestantism from persecution embedded the concept of individual judgement and responsibility in mainstream society, which led directly to the birth of capitalism. Capitalism is a harsh creed, but it has created vast wealth and extended it across the globe.

Initially, Westphalian values were European values only. But as European countries sought overseas possessions, these values went with them. When those empires collapsed, they remained in the brickwork of the liberated states.

Thats all history now. Every day there are reminders that we live in a Post-Enlightenment age.

There was one stark reminder last week when, for the first time in its history, the association of the 50 state governors of the United States invited the head of a foreign government, Justin Trudeau, to give itskeynote speech.

At the meeting in Providence, Rhode Island, were also senior representatives from Mexico, Japan, China and Vietnam. The clear message was that governors, of whatever political stripe, no longer have confidence in the self-destructive muddle now passing as the Washington establishment being able to function as a national legislature going forward.

The governors now have to defend their own interests, and those of their citizens, by pursuing their own foreign policies. They need to maintain their own strong relationships with Canada and Mexico to try to ensure there is only minimal damage from the ignorant blather coming out of Washington about the North America Free Trade Agreement.

Equally, the governors need to override the protectionism and isolationism of the current Washington administration by making their own overtures to potential investor nations like China and Japan.

These state officials are closer to the concerns of their constituents than the absentee partisans in Washington which explains why many of them are bypassing the federal government and making their own commitments to important international initiatives, like the Paris accord on climate change.

The problems at the root of the dysfunction in the U.S. nation-state run much deeper than the current personalities at the helm. Donald Trump and his fellow-travellers are only the most recent eruptions of symptoms that have been evident for a couple of decades. Federations are always difficult to sustain and manage. Its going to take a major constitutional upheaval to get the U.S. nation state back into working condition.

In Europe, the irony is that the continent already realized the the traditional nation state was incapable of dealing with the challenges of the modern world. Its answer was to go back to before Westphalia for a solution to effectively recreate the Holy Roman Empire.

In theory, the European Union is a secular, non-religious version of that empire, albeit with major territorial additions. But it is evident that common Christian culture even if it doesnt involve the daily devotions of the pre-Westphalian Middle Ages remains a binding European force.

The inability to effectively integrate Muslim immigrants has opened a rift often a violent one in several EU countries. Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has for years been outspoken in his objection to Turkey joining the EU. Sarkozy has usually been careful to couch his objection in geographic terms, characterizing Turkey as being more of the Middle East and Asia Minor than of Europe. But the silent subtext behind Sarkozys position was that Turkey is a majority Muslim country.

The legal religious tolerance written into the Treaty of Westphalia is having a rough time worldwide, not just in Europe. Christian Copts are being slaughtered in large numbers in Egypt. Violence between Muslims and Hindus is a fact of daily life in India, as it is between various branches of Islam in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Buddhists and Muslims are at loggerheads in Burma and in southern Thailand.

In contrast, China is embroiled in a new age of spirituality as the quasi-religious Communist Party belief systems crumble under the weight of greed and corruption. But the Party only allows spiritual expressions whether they be Buddhist, Daoist, Muslim, Christian or Confucian over which it has ultimate control.

Chinas 30-year high-velocity ride from peasant economy to imperial oligarchy is also a testament to the limits of the capitalism set loose by the Treaty of Westphalia.

Economic globalization has rushed to its logical conclusion, creating oligarchies in all regions of the world, with most wealth in the hands of a tiny minority. Over much of the world, the disparity between the rich and the rest is approaching levels where social unrest and upheaval become unavoidable.

In this picture, Canada stands out as one of the few remaining sanctuaries of Westphalian values. The Canadian nation state functions reasonably well. Canada remains a tolerant society. And even though Canada has many more oligarchs and much more disparity than in the past, it remains an outpost of functional capitalism.

That still leaves two questions for Canadians especially in the context of the crisis of political legitimacy to the south. How do we sustain those Westphalian values? And who are our allies now?

How Tantra can go wrong – NEWS.com.au

Tantric sex is an ancient Hindu practice where a slow form of sex is said to increase intimacy and create a mind-body connection that can lead to powerful orgasms.

Tantra is often misunderstood, and its easy to be taken advantage of.

TANTRA is one of those things that when dropped into conversation can leave people blushing and imagining steamy scenes from the Kama Sutra.

But its often misunderstood, and due to the intimate nature of the practice some women who visit Tantric practitioners are sexually abused.

SO WHAT IS TANTRA AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?

The ancient Hindu or Buddhist practice dates back something like 5,000 years and combines mantras, meditation, yoga and ritual with the aim to prolong lovemaking and find deeper connections and tenderness with not just your lover, but with yourself and in all of your relationships.

It can take years to fully comprehend and often involves dedicating time with a guru (teacher) in order to unravel its intricacies by studying sexual energy and how it can be applied to achieve a higher level of consciousness.

By not denying and accepting natural human desires, it can result in a positive and life changing experience, with benefits that extend far beyond the bedroom. And its not just for couples. Anyone wanting to live a more fully integrated life that encompasses their career, their family, and of course their sexuality can benefit.

One of the key motives of tantra is connection and bringing about wholeness and richness into our everyday existence. For me a big aspect of this practice is about relinquishing shame, judgment, guilt, and taboo around sex and our sexuality, says Melbourne based Tantric Facilitator, Luka Tremback.

SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD. SO WHERE CAN IT GO WRONG?

The intimate nature of how tantra is taught means that often sessions take place in private one on one lessons between a student and a guru over a long period of time, often months or even years.

The guru teaches the student by passing on their knowledge through what is known as a lineage (an ancient line of teaching that has been transferred from guru to devotees for hundreds of years).

As a result, relationships can cultivate between the student and the guru, and this is where it can become risky for the student particularly if they are new to tantra, easily manipulated or have previously suffered from abuse. In a situation like this, a guru can easily use their power to take advantage of the students trust if that is their plan.

Tantra tends to be unregulated and as sessions are often private, it means that the odds of physical, sexual, spiritual, and emotional abuse of vulnerable women and men occurring are far higher than they should be.

The practice is rife with abuse all over the world, yet due to the often subtle nature of how it happens, it means that a vast number of cases go unreported and guilty instructors are rarely convicted.

Tantric abuse comes in many shapes and forms. Extreme cases encompass sexual, physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse. The latter can be tricky to identify, but any sign that you are being made to feel disempowered is a warning sign, says Melbourne based Tantric Facilitator Luka Tremback.

It can be very subtle as many of these spiritual leaders are highly skilled in artful, colourful language to hide abuse in the name of spiritual enlightenment.

When you look at recorded cases of abuse in tantra and yoga, common themes that arise include secrecy, and threats to the victims safety if they disclose the relationship to anyone else. In many cases the instructor is having sexual relations with multiple students at once without one anothers knowledge.

In some Tantric lineages, the teacher can also manipulate a student into thinking that they need to have a sexual connection with them in order to be initiated into their line.

According to Tremback this scenario can play out quite a bit.

Say a person is seeking out a Tantric instructor and the teacher suggests a private one on one free session. The student may then be made to feel special because they are being given extra attention. If the teacher is abusing their power, they may proceed to say that they can help them if they jump on their wand of light or lingam (Sanskrit for male genitalia) because they are a man of god.

If the individual has suffered abuse previously or is new to tantra, they may think that this will fix them. For those that have previously suffered abuse, once again they find themselves in the same cycle as before they came in for healing and then ended up getting exposed to the exact same trauma.

Some people do find healing in having sexual relations with their guru but a lot of the time it is a disturbing, disempowering and manipulative experience for the gurus student, says Tremback.

HOW DO YOU FIND A TANTRIC INSTRUCTOR YOU CAN TRUST?

If a teacher is telling you that you need to do the work yourself and that they are merely there to facilitate, that is a good sign! Look for someone that encourages and reminds you that only you have the power to heal yourself.

Anyone who says I can heal you or follow steps 1-5 and then youll be sexually enlightened, or in such words (be cautious here because their language can be very artful and manipulative) probably isnt going to fix you and likely is going to take advantage of you in some shape or form, says Tremback.

Here are Trembacks key points to keep in mind when looking for an instructor:

Always do your research on a potential instructor

Speak to practitioners who have been studying with them and always get a really well informed opinion on a school or teacher, not just from one or two people, but from many.

Try out a variety of instructors and see who resonates with you

Take note if theyre using fear based language or inflicting any kind of theres something wrong with you and I can help you attitude. If youre walking out of their workshops not feeling good about yourself, then someone is tapping into your insecurities committing to them isnt a good idea.

Chat to the teacher beforehand

Always call the school or instructor beforehand to ask questions and get a feel for who they are and what it is they are offering. This initial chat should give you a sense of whether or not it is worth going in for a face-to-face meeting or trying out one of their classes.

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these aforementioned forms of abuse, report the person/incident to the police and call 1800 Respect on 1800 737 732.

We have all seen the bumper stickers and t-shirts that say something along the lines oflines of You never see a motorcycle outside a therapists office.John Metzgers new book, Meditation by Motorcycle takes this expression to a higher level of enlightenment.

Begin Press Release:

DENVER, June 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ Most people seek inner peace through quiet meditation and reflection. A new self-help book has a different take: Meditation by Motorcycle shows readers how to achieve enlightenment by riding a motorcycle, something decidedly louder and more dangerous than the traditional yoga class or spiritual retreat.

Assigned a Transcendental Meditation mantra at age 11, author John Metzger started early on the path, but soon discovered that peace and tranquility werent for him. Instead, seduced by brute horsepower and mantra by movement, he started riding motorcycles. His book shares spiritual lessons learned over a lifetime of reverent riding, and makes the case that motorcycling is the best way to find elusive Nirvana Moments in a high-pressure world.

Metzger recounts how the Greatest Generation bestowed the luxury of leisure time upon the Baby Boomers. With this gift, they pioneered the Meditation by Movement Movement, pursuing every physical path to peace imaginable. From choices ranging from Frisbee and fly-fishing to todays death sports and social media stunts, Metzger found his Zen on a motorcycle.

We respect the ancient wisdom, says Metzger, but instead seek mindfulness and presence through the cosmic forces of internal combustion, adrenalin and an expanded carbon footprint. The motorcycle enables the perfect relationship between rhythmic movement and internal stillness, drawing out the physical life force like no other.

With humor and irony, he advocates the ethics of pragmatic technique, safety and courtesy versus a culture fueled by anger, cheap thrills and perpetual adolescence.

Meditation by Motorcycle Ride Your Carbon Footprint to the Apex of Enlightenment, is available on Amazon.com. After writing Motorcycling Through Midlife in 2013, this is Metzgers second book. Pre-orders for the paperback edition can be reserved at http://www.motomarathon.com.
