He was born May 9, 1960 in Winchester, the son of James H. and Juanita Baker Kees.

He was married to Donna Jean Kees.

Mr. Kees was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, the Sons of American Legion Squadron 21 and the Rock Harbor Golf & Country Club. He was an avid hunter and golfer.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a stepdaughter, Lisa D. Renner of Winchester; two brothers, Dana G. Kees of Winchester and Mark W. Kees of South Carolina; a sister, Genoa T. Kees of Winchester; a grandson, Eddie Seal, III; a great-granddaughter, Autumn Seal and nieces and nephews, Chris Kees, Shane Kees, Jennifer Kees Cress, Thomas "T.J." Kees, Michael Kees and Brittany Kees.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sierra Seal and two brothers, Steve Owen Kees and James Scott Kees.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Tom Kleppe served as mayor of Bismarck, was elected to Congress on three occasions, managed the U.S. Small Business Administration and served as U.S. Secretary of Interior. Kleppe was also president of Gold Seal, a company founded by Harold Schafer.

Thomas Savig Kleppe was born July 1, 1919, in Kintyre, located in south-central North Dakota, to Lars and Hannah (Savig) Kleppe. Lars, who was born in Norway, managed the Farmers Company Elevator, traded horses, and had an implement business on the side. Tom attended elementary school in Kintyre, but because the town did not have a high school, he attended high school in Valley City, 120 miles away. During the summers, Tom worked for his father.

He graduated in 1936 and then attended Valley City Teachers College (VCTC), now Valley City State University. According to the college yearbook, the only sport that Tom Kleppe participated in at college was boxing.

Kleppe left VCTC after one year to take a job as bookkeeper for the Stock Growers Bank in Napoleon, and because management saw his potential, he was sent to the Dakota National Bank in Bismarck to learn the banking business as an assistant cashier. Kleppe then returned to the Napoleon bank as managing officer at the age of 21.

After the U.S. entered World War II, Kleppe enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving as a warrant officer in the finance division. While he was stationed at Buckley Field, near Denver, Colo., he joined the military post baseball team, the Buckley Field Falcons. There were a couple of former major league ball players on the team, and many of his other teammates had played minor league baseball.

Despite the fact that Kleppe had no professional baseball experience, he was named the starting shortstop by his manager, Burgess Whitehead, who had been an all-star second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Giants. When Kleppe was about to be discharged in 1945, he was approached by scouts from the Cardinals urging him to sign a baseball contract with them, which he turned down.

Kleppe later told newspaper reporters, I only weighed 145 pounds, wringing wet, and I figured that wasnt enough to make the major leagues, and I wouldnt settle for anything less.

After Kleppes discharge, he returned to North Dakota and learned that his parents' friend, Harold Schafer, was willing to give him a job. In 1942, Schafer, a salesman in Bismarck, had begun repackaging a 3M, commercial-grade floor wax that he sold under the name of Gold Seal, and he was having success in marketing it. According to Schafer, Lars Kleppe had a good friend who had helped Schafer in the early stages of his business. Schafer then made a promise to Lars, When and if I have money, I am going to have Tom (Kleppe) count it for me.

True to his word, Schafer hired Kleppe to be the bookkeeper for his Gold Seal Co., and a short time later, Schafer promoted Kleppe to treasurer. Then in 1947, Schafer named Kleppe as vice president of his company.

While working at Gold Seal in Bismarck, Kleppe also immersed himself in civic and business matters and, in 1950, decided to run for mayor. He was elected and, at the age of 30, became the youngest mayor of a capital city (in the U.S.), at the time.

In 1954, after serving out his term as mayor, Kleppe returned full time to Gold Seal. He told a newspaper reporter that his main accomplishments while mayor were: ending Bismarcks perennial flood problems; adding a four-lane highway into the city; increasing salaries of city employees (by) 30 percent; installing hundreds of street lights; installing sanitary sewers in the south part of town; and, keeping the municipal debt down to almost nothing.

By this time, Schafer had added a furniture polish, bleach and glass wax, and sales were beginning to skyrocket. With the money that the Gold Seal Co. was making, Schafer began to pursue another interest, which was restoring the town of Medora to the way it looked back in the 1880s. In 1958, Schafer was elected president of the Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park and Badlands Association. "The primary purpose of the association was to produce the outdoor theater production, "Old Four Eyes,'" a musical based on the life of Roosevelt while he was in the Badlands.

The theater for the show was carved out of the hillside of Burning Gulch and given the name Burning Hills Amphitheatre. Since this project was taking a lot of Schafer's time and attention, he resigned as president of Gold Seal and appointed Kleppe as his replacement.

Kleppe remained president of Gold Seal until 1964, when he decided to run as a Republican against Quentin Burdick, the incumbent U.S. Senator. North Dakota was heavily Republican and Burdick was considered a liberal Democrat. At the time of the June 30 primary, things looked good for Kleppe when he received 67,920 of the votes compared to the 45,099 votes cast for Burdick.

However, North Dakota swung heavily for the Democrats on Election Day, with Lyndon Johnson, the Democratic candidate for U.S. President, receiving 58% of the votes, and the Republican candidate, Barry Goldwater, receiving 42%. Kleppe also received only 42% of the votes, and Burdick was reelected. That year, 1964, was the last time in North Dakota that a Democratic presidential candidate received more votes than the Republican candidate.

Kleppe had his first taste of statewide elective politics, and like many people who were successful competitive sports participants, a single defeat did not make them want to give up. It very often strengthened their resolve and they usually wanted to get back into competitions just as soon as possible. Unfortunately, in politics it usually takes a couple of years before they can do that.

After his defeat, Kleppe took a position as vice president of the J.M. Daln Co., an investment firm in Minneapolis. We will continue our story about Tom Kleppe next week.

The strange magical seal in Mondstadt is now able to be broken, which is great news for the future of Genshin Impact.

If youve been playing Genshin Impact for a while, youll probably be familiar with the mysterious seal adorning a random door in Mondstadts main metropolis. Although it looks like a standard Hydro symbol, lashing it with Barbaras water bullets unfortunately wont accomplish anything, nor will Xingqius rain swords be able to pry it open. This is a seal steeped in mysterious magic thats beyond Genshin Impacts present world state or at least it was, until very recently.

Have you met Mona yet? Shes an excellent character that comes into Genshin Impact at Adventure Rank 38, which is a level precious few players have attained as of yet. Thats not to say nobody has quite a lot of players have already put a huge amount of time and effort into Genshin Impact, and have pretty much maxed out the content that is currently available prior to patch 1.1. However, Genshin is still seeing a massive influx of new players on a daily basis, meaning that the vast majority of people arent quite there yet. If youre one of these people, and are worried about being exposed to light spoilers, you might be better off reading through my experiment in which I did over 1,500 Wishes to test the gacha system, or checking out our speculation as to what the next Genshin Impact banner is going to be after Klee's Sparkling Steps.

But if youre happy to hear about why Genshin Impact has managed to convince me that its going to have a lot of excellent story content for a very long time, then stick around for a while. Some people might worry that Genshin is destined to be a fad, that its going to fade into obscurity the moment next-gen arrives. Im here to tell you that it would be a tragedy if that happened, because Genshin Impact has a blindingly bright future ahead of it, and I am genuinely excited for every little part of it all because of a little magical seal that was recently cracked by a fascinating magician named Mona.

The beginning of this piece refers to the magical seal blocking off a random building in Mondstadt for the majority of the game (as it currently stands at the time of writing). When you finish Monas story quest, shell announce that shes happy to stay in Mondstadt for a bit, and cracking a pesky little seal like that is small potatoes for her. But until this point there was no one in Mondstadt or Liyue capable of accomplishing such a feat. This might not seem like a huge deal at face value and maybe it's not! But in terms of Genshins longevity, its massively refreshing to see.

The fact that it takes Monas narrative arrival to overcome a mysterious and seemingly unconquerable obstacle bodes very well Genshins status as a developing game. Lets consider what Genshin is like right now: it offers us a beautiful open world in which you can do pretty much anything like in Breath of the Wild, almost everything you can possibly come across is either climbable, cookable, or punchable. At the same time, its got that enticing ambiguity boasted by all of the best MMOs. Its like in FFXIV when certain areas are locked off because you havent reached a certain point in the story yet. Theyre not slapped with the traditional DLC stamp of most single-player games theyre given an ambiguous narrative reason for why theyre not accessible right now, despite the fact that Genshin emphatically isnt an MMO that needs to cater to players of all levels at all times. This is great for worldbuilding, especially when also like in an MMO the world is constantly in the process of being built. It's distinct from DLC because DLC usually comes in the form of add-ons that are external to a base game new areas that are detached from the original. Genshin's approach is to expand its world in a more interdependent way, where new areas are inherently attached to previous ones.

If youve done the first few story quests, youll know what I mean. Razor was the first character I unlocked, so I already loved the weird little wolf boy by the time I bumped into him in Wolvendom. But doing his quest line helped me to learn about him what makes him smile, and what makes him tick. I learned about his background, about him being raised by wolves after being left abandoned in the forest. And then once I finished his quest, the Wolf in the North challenge in the until-that-point dilapidated and pointless structure in the middle of Wolvendom opened up, and a previously mysterious part of the map became imbued with significance and purpose. The same can be said of Stormterrors Domain, unlocked as part of Ventis story quest, while Xianglings missions teach us all about Liyue before were even a high enough level to go there.

Unlocking new content in games is hardly new. Meeting additional characters as you progress through a story is a given, in most cases. But in terms of untraversable areas Well, Genshin Impacts approach to this is unique, and actually mirrors a successful Early Access approach or an MMO more so than a full-fledged single-player RPG. Instead of just locking areas off with level-gating, Genshin has committed to launching several new regions over the next year, all of which will come with their own characters, stories, and elements for the Traveler to attune themselves to.

These regions will spill into the servers gradually over time, but the best thing about this is that they wont discount the areas that are currently available. As proven by Monas magical seal as well as other yet-to-be-unlocked areas like the mysterious salt ruins in Liyue there is still so much to learn about the areas were exploring right now. Im excited for Genshin to be built out as one cohesive, developing world, as opposed to phoning in every existing aspect of itself whenever a new expansion drops. Monas late-game and still unfinished! story quest gives me full faiththat this will be exactly the case when push comes to shove.

Archival performances from stars including Sam Smith and Florence and the Machine are among 50 shows to air throughout November (20) across the BBC.

Celebrating 50 years of pop music performances, BBC Radio 2 officials have compiled an all-star line-up of live shows from the past five decades, with acts including Fleetwood Mac, Annie Lennox, Take That, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, Bon Jovi, Coldplay, and more featured throughout the programming.

The live music season takes place across BBC Radio 2, BBC Sounds, BBC Four, BBC iPlayer and Red Button, with all 50 performances available on BBC Sounds, plus a special 10 artist Box Set available to watch on iPlayer, from November 1st.

BBC Four broadcasts Dido on 30 October and Seal on 13 November as TV exclusives, while Radio 2 presenters are curating their own favourite tracks of all time from In Concert 50 to play during shows across the month and in special programming on the station.

In Concert presenter, Jo Whiley, says, As the presenter of In Concert its been an absolute thrill to watch some incredible performances by the hugest of music legends in the tiniest of intimate venues.

But there are many more that Ive not yet seen and that is the joy of In Concert 50, she adds. Nowhere but the BBC has such a unique archive of music performances from some of the most important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In a first for San Diego County elections, the polls for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election will open for four days, starting Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In light of COVID-19, voters were encouraged to vote from home using their mail ballot. This close to the election, voters are advised to not mail-in ballots, as they may not reach the registrar in time.

For those who want to vote in person, they can vote early at their assigned polling place from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Thursday, the registrar reported nearly half of the county's 1.95 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, more than double the number received by that point in 2016.

More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday. At this point in the 2016 presidential election, the registrar had received 409,702 ballots.

Even so, due to the pandemic and a predicted high voter turnout, the registrar's office is continuing to urge voters to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting before Election Day itself.

Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.

There are fewer polling places than in past elections, and the locations of some polls have changed so voters are encouraged to check the back of their sample ballot and voter information pamphlet before heading out to vote this weekend.

Voters casting ballots in person are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance.

"We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home," Vu said. "Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. The sooner we receive your ballot, the sooner we can start processing it so it will be counted right when the polls close at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3."

Assigned polls were included on the registrar's postcard reminder sent to voters last week or voters can look it up at sdvote.com. Voters can also confirm their ballot was received by the registrar's office online at the same site.

The hours at the polls and the Registrar of Voters office will change to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3. Voters should prepare for long lines.

A statement from the registrar also reminds San Diegans campaigning or electioneering within 100 feet of a polling place or mail ballot drop-off location is not allowed. This includes the visible display or audible dissemination of information that advocates for or against any candidate or measure on the ballot.

NASA astronaut William Shepherd floated next to Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gidzenko as they looked down at their home planet some 20 years ago.

One of my most interesting moments with Yuri in space was looking at the Earth, Shepherd said during a virtual panel discussion on Thursday. They had both been in the military. He was saying, OK I was a MiG-21 pilot and I was stationed here. And half an orbit later, I would say, OK I was a Navy Seal and we were here and here and here. That was a really interesting dialogue.

On Nov. 2, 2000, Shepherd, Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev became the first long-duration crew to live on the International Space Station. They laid the foundation for 20 years of continuous human habitation, international cooperation and technical accomplishments.

Shepherd spoke Russian. Gidzenko and Krikalev spoke English. They communicated with a mixture of languages called Runglish.

And their technical challenges began almost immediately. They were initially unable to open the space stations hatch. They struggled for a little bit before getting inside, turning on the lights, activating the toilet and making hot water to enjoy a warm beverage after two days in a Russian Soyuz capsule eating cold food.

It was very new, very clean, recalled Krikalev, who had previously flown on the Russian space station Mir. He said it wasnt completely empty but certainly didnt look lived in.

When the first cargo vehicle arrived 15 days later, it was supposed to dock autonomously. But the spacecraft started wobbling when it was about 100 meters away. Gidzenko had to use hand controllers to manually bring it in.

I dont think you could say we had an average day, Shepherd said. At least not too many of them. But this was good because we were up there to get a lot of work done, and every day seemed to have its own set of challenges.

And it only took a few orbits of conflicting orders from Houston and Moscow before Shepherd gave both control centers a pointed reminder.

The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) has generated over R120 million in financial benefits through additional revenue, cost savings and private investments since it was set up in 2013.

This was announced by the City of Cape Towns Strategic Business Partners, GreenCape, which manages the programme.

The WISP offers green technical expertise to businesses to connect them with unused or residual resources including energy, water, assets and logistics.

The achievements of the WISP are very impressive and I am proud of the work done to contribute to a sustainable economy here in Cape Town. This impressive programme contributes to the economy and the efficacy of businesses by assisting in improving business processes as well as adding new revenue streams, which ultimately contribute to the success of businesses and job creation through recycling, said the Citys Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, Alderman James Vos.

Apart from the creation of 69 permanent jobs, and 25 temporary jobs in member companies, the programme has ensured that more than 100 000 tons of waste was diverted from landfills, and 300 000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions saved.

The city funds GreenCape to unlock the manufacturing and employment potential in the green economy, and focuses on attracting investment opportunities, as well as removing barriers to entry and expansion in the green economy.

The green economy is seen as a key sector with the potential to add to an already thriving business system that creates jobs.

Just one example is the Sealand Gear company which is a WISP participant and specialises in manufacturing bags and apparel from recycled and upcycled materials, provided by GreenCape.

Sealand now employs 28 people and as a young start-up, the WISP helped Sealand set up supplier relationships, which would have proved difficult without this assistance. said Alderman Vos

The City said it was committed to speeding up progress towards sustainable development and poverty reduction through the sustainable use of natural resources and would continue to partner with stakeholders to enable a greener future.

Today is Weatherization Day, an annual opportunity to celebrate the impact of the U.S. Department of Energys (DOEs)Weatherization Assistance Program(WAP), which reduces energy costs for low-income households by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes.

For the past four decades, WAP has helped lower home energy costs for more than seven million low-income families through efficiency retrofits, and providedtraining and resourcesto states across the country to develop a skilled weatherization workforce.

Last year, I traveled to Wisconsin to witness one of our state weatherization programs in action. Thanks to the efforts of the State of Wisconsins Department of Administration andProject Home, Wisconsins local weatherization agency, I had the pleasure of visiting two homes where I watched how weatherization crews went about their work to make them more energy efficient and safe.

What struck me during my visit was not only the high level of skill required of the professionals, but also the physically challenging nature of their jobs. From crawling into tight attic spaces to remove and replace insulation, to topping ladders to seal and repair ducts, to blowing insulation with large, heavy hoses, the crews navigated the physical and technical challenges of their jobs with relative ease. Their work not only made these homeshealthier and saferfor the families living there, but also saved those families a great deal of money.

Across the state of Wisconsin, there are 18 local weatherization service providers, serving all 72 counties and 11 Native American Tribes. In just one year, the states weatherization network implemented energy-efficiency upgrades to more than 6,000 homes. Nationally, DOEs Weatherization Assistance Program provides services to approximately 35,000 homes every year weatherizing all types of low-income homes, including single-family detached units, mobile homes, and large multifamily buildings.

At the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, were doing amazing work to make energy affordable and keep our economy strong. On Weatherization Day, Im reminded of that trip to Wisconsin, and how special it was to witness firsthand how our work is making a difference in the lives of American workers and families.

In an early-voting surge seen across the country, nearly half of San Diego Countys 1.95 million voters have cast their ballots in the Nov. 3 election, the Registrar of Voters reported Thursday.

Thats more than double the number received by this point in 2016.

More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday, according to the registrars office over 48% of the total to be cast. At this point in the 2016 presidential election, the registrar had received 409,700 ballots.

Other parts of the country are seeing similar levels of turnout. In Texas, 51% of registered voters had cast their ballots by Wednesday, with long lines at many polling places. In Florida, 52.5% of ballots were in as of Thursday. In Georgia, it was 48.9%.

More than 80 million Americans have now cast ballots in the presidential election, according to the U.S. Elections Project at the University of Florida. Professor Michael McDonald, who directs the project, is predicting a record election turnout.

McDonald and other voting experts have predicted turnout will easily surpass the 138 million who voted in the 2016 presidential election. Only 47 million votes came before Election Day in 2016.

California and many other states, including Texas and Florida, can count ballots before election day, leading to earlier results.

Ballots received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office this week should be processed in time for the first release of election night results to be posted shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said. Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. The sooner we receive your ballot, the sooner we can start processing it so it will be counted right when the polls close at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3.

All San Diego County voters received official ballots by mail earlier this month and have a number of voting options:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the registrars office encourages older adults and people with underlying medical conditions to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting early.

A new generation of celebrity children is growing up, and stunning Heidi Klum's oldest daughter, bornHelene Boshoven Samuel, better known as Leni, is one of them.

Many of the new celebrities are all too happy to revel in the attention, but Leni, as it turns out, is not eager to be a public figure, and though she has an Instagram account,she never shows her face.

SWEET SIXTEEN

Everything we know about Leni is glimpsed through whatever her mother lets slip on her social media, and recently it came out that the 16-year-old has her driver's license.

Klum shared a selfie on Instagram stories in which she is sitting next to her daughter, who is at the wheel of a car. The former model announced that Leni can now drive.

MAJOR MILESTONE

For any teen, getting that driver's license is a major milestone, and Klum was justly proud, but she did make a point of keeping her daughter's face out of focus in her selfie.

Nevertheless, it is easy to see that Leni is tall, blond, and lovely,just like her mom, and from her baby pictures, we know she has enormous, beautiful blue eyes.

Funnily enough, it seems that the camera-shy Leni is the only one of Klum's four children interested in modeling, fashion, and showbusiness and wants to follow in her footsteps. Klum said:

The only one so far who wants to step in my footsteps is my oldest daughter, Leni.

A BIG FAMILY

Klum has four children: Leni from a relationship with Italian businessmanFlavio Briatore; sonsHenry, 15, andJohan, 13, as well as daughterLou from her marriage to British singer Seal.

Klum's relationship withBriatore ended shortly after she announced her pregnancy, and that was when she met Seal. Even though Briatore has met Leni, Klum stated that hehas no involvement in her daughter's life and that her father is Seal.

In 2009, the singer adopted Leni, and she now has the same surname as her brothers and sisters. Sadly, Klum's marriage to Seal ended in 2014, but the model has moved on and is now happily remarried toTokio Hotel singer Tom Kaulitz.

Leni's brothers Henry and Johan may be younger, but they are taller than she is and looking very grown-up -- and for that matter, so is her baby sister Lou. Klum stunned fans when she shared a video clip that shows her dancing with her two girls.

Not only is Leni almost as tall as her mom, but so is Lou, who is, after all, only 11 years old. Klum and Seal share custody of the four children, but the process has been far from painless.

In a recent clash, the singer had not wanted to allow Klum to take the four children with her to Germany to film a segment of "Germany's Next Topmodel" out of fear they might be exposed to COVID-19.

Leni pleaded her case to the court, explaining that since she and her siblings spent most of their time with their mother, it would be traumatic for them to spend months away from Klum. Klum stated:

"I am well aware of all of the necessary precautions associated with the COVID-19 virus, and would never put our children at risk I have taken all the precautions for Germany the same way I do in the United States."

Seal relented, and the children have traveled to Germany with their mother and will be back in Los Angeles in December. The four Samuel kids will then, as per their agreement, spend extra time with Seal.

The aircraft, which landed safely in Venduruthy channel for a transit halt, is scheduled to reach Ahmedabad, where the country's maiden seaplane service will be launched between the Sabarmati riverfront and the Statue of Unity in Narmada district.

A 19-seater seaplane which will be used for flights between the Sabarmati riverfront and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patels Statue of Unity in Gujarat as part of a first-of-its-kind service in the country arrived here from Maldives on Sunday.

The aircraft, which landed safely in Venduruthy channel for a transit halt, is scheduled to reach Ahmedabad, where the countrys maiden seaplane service will be launched between the Sabarmati riverfront and the Statue of Unity in Narmada district.

The service is likely to be launched on October 31 if all goes as per plans, Union Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Mandaviya had told PTI.

The Twin Otter 300 seaplane leased by Spicejet will be able to accommodate 12 passengers.

The seaplane was provided assistance with berthing facility at Naval jetty and refuelling for its onward journey, a defence spokesperson said.

Seaplanes are a natural choice of connectivity between mainland and Lakshadweep islands. Inland water channels in Kochi and sheltered lagoons in islands offer an ideal space for the seaplanes to land and take-off, he said.

Representatives of Spicejet, Indian Navy, Cochin International Airport Limited and district administration were present to supervise the transit halt.

The crew of the seaplane were greeted by Vice Admiral A K Chawla, flag officer commanding-in-chief of Southern Naval Command.

He said the occasion refreshed fond memories of amphibious aircraft operations from Kochi naval base in the yesteryears.

Incidentally, the birth of Indian Naval Aviation was also preceded by a similar landing of sealand aircraft in the Venduruthy channel in Kochi on February 4, 1953.

Seaplane to be used for flights between Sabarmati riverfront, Statue of Unity reaches Kochi - Financial Express

One of his favorite projects involves a cabinet of curiosities that he curated with items from online vendors on Etsy and from Woolly Mammoth, an eclectic store in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. The study examined participants morbid curiosity about strange objects at three levels: by looking at them (visual), by touching them (tactile) and by reading about them (epistemic).

Scrivner stocked the cabinet with both morbid and non-morbid items for which he had written interesting histories, including a psych report for serial killer Ed Gein, an old copy of Chaucers works, a cursed exorcism medallion, a seal and wax used in Game of Thrones and morticians tools.

Participants viewed the cabinet while wearing eye-tracking glasses. First, they inspected for 90 seconds without instructions, as if they were visiting a museum. Then, while wearing gloves, they were allowed to pick up and examine five items of their choice. Finally, they were asked if they wanted to read the stories behind another five items.

The idea is to tease apart whether morbidly curious people are really more epistemically curioustheyre not interested in doing violent things, right? said Scrivner, who has paused data collection on the project due to the pandemic. So maybe they will be interested in looking at or reading about something scary, but will only want to touch things that arent.

Scrivner also has a study coming out in Psychological Science this fall about another seasonally appropriate topic: haunted houses.

In 2017, when data for the forthcoming paper were collected, Scrivner began a collaboration with Mathias Clasen, a researcher at Aarhus University in Denmark with similar interests. With colleagues Marc Andersen and Uffe Schjoedt, they studied visitor responses to scary stimuli at a local haunted tourist attraction.

To do so, they triangulated three different kinds of data: physiological data from heart rate monitors, self-reported levels of fear and fun for visitors after they exited the haunted house and behavioral expressions of fear by coding videos of their reactions to frightening events.

We showed that theres an optimum level of fear, essentially a sweet spot, Scrivner said. The basic idea is that people regulate how immersed they are in the haunted house and how much emotional arousal they are willing to experience in order to maximize their level of fun.

With Halloween around the corner, Scrivner is getting ready to celebrate himself.

I usually like to catch a haunted house or two during October and binge a few horror movies that Ive been wanting to watch, he said. And, of course, curate my spooky Spotify playlist.

His own favorite horror movies include Hereditary and other films by Ari Aster. He also likes the work of directors Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious and The Purge), Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) and James Wan (Saw and The Conjuring Universe).

But if youre not a horror fan, 2020 may be scary enough, according to Scrivner. Not everyone is equally morbidly curious, and for some people, the visceral feelings that such films can present outweigh their entertainment value.

People tend to know themselves well enough to decide whether or not it would be a good idea to try watching something scary, he said.

Another Massachusetts school district is retiring a mascot that references Native Americans, citing harmful Native American stereotypes.

The Pentucket School Committee voted to retire the districts Sachem mascot during a meeting Tuesday night following a presentation back in late July by Sag8tmo Paul Pouliot and Denise Pouliot, leaders of the Cowasuck Band of the Pennacook-Abenaki People.

At that presentation, the couple discussed Native American history in the area, and how the Sachem mascot, which has been in use at Pentucket since 1958, impacts them, according to a news release.

Pentucket is the latest school district to retire a mascot of Native American origin, or one with problematic history. In June, Walpole school officials unanimously decided to drop its Rebels mascot. At the state level, Charlie Baker has said hes open to discussions of removing and redesigning the states seal and flag, which feature an illustration of a Native American person.

From the meeting in July, school officials learned that Native Americans who lived in the area near the school district did not have Sachems, though other nearby tribes did. Sachems were either heads of families, or served as the speakers for a tribe. Officials also learned about the problematic use of Native American headdresses, which the districts mascot has used in the past, the release said.

A lot of thought and consideration went into this decision, and ultimately the School Committee has decided this is the right path for our district to take, schools Superintendent Justin Bartholomew said. When the mascot first was selected it was done so out of respect for what they believed a Sachem represented. We know today that there are myriad reasons why it is not appropriate to have a Sachem mascot, and this is an opportunity for Pentucket to start a new chapter.

For now, the school district will refer to its sports teams simply as Pentucket. Current school uniforms will continue to be used until the time comes to replace them, and the high school gym floor, which has Sachem on it, will be changed when the new Pentucket Regional Middle High School building opens, scheduled for 2022.
