As summer, and barbecue season, heat up, its time to dig out those tried and true, old or new recipes that make any cookout special. I have more than a few favorites to ensure that whichever meat, poultry, fish or seafood I have a hankering for is tender and flavorful. I just treat it to a soak in a luxurious marinade.

Basically, a marinade is made up of an acid, like vinegar, wine or citrus juice; an oil or liquid; and herbs and spices. The acid works to soften the meat while the oil adds moisture. Herbs and spices add the signature flavor.

Though a variety of good bottled marinades are available at the grocery store I like to start from scratch. That way I can customize the ingredients to suit the flavor Im looking for.

When preparing a marinade always use a non-reactive container like glass, ceramic, stainless steel or plastic for mixing or cooking. Never use aluminum. When the marinade is ready to do its job, place the meat in a zipper plastic bag and pour the marinade over. Seal and place in the refrigerator, remembering to turn often to ensure that the meat marinates evenly.

As for a timetable, marinate beef 5 to 8 hours, pork about 3 to 5 hours, poultry about 4 hours and delicate fish and shellfish no longer than an hour. Following food safety rules, never reuse the marinade. If basting during grilling is desired, simply reserve some of the marinade mixture before using.

Ginger Garlic Marinade

(Use to marinate, and to baste, chicken or pork.)

1 cup lemon juice

1 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup honey

1 cup soy sauce

2 slices fresh gingerroot, smashed

2 cloves fresh garlic, minced

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. marjoram

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a large jar with a screw-on lid. Cover and shake to blend well. Refrigerate 2 hours to blend flavors. Makes 3 cups.

Fajita Marinade

(Perfectly seasoned for grilled beef, pork, chicken or shrimp fajitas.)

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1/4 cup red wine vinegar

1 tsp. sugar

1 tsp. dried oregano

1 tsp. chili powder

1/2 tsp. garlic powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. pepper

Directions: In small bowl whisk together all ingredients. Place desired meat or seafood in a zip-top plastic storage bag and pour marinade over. Seal bag and refrigerate, turning occasionally during the time specified above. Makes 1/2 cup.

Pork Marinade

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup minced onion

2 cloves garlic, pressed

1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce

1/4 cup white vinegar

1 tsp. black pepper

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. dried thyme

1/4 tsp. dried marjoram

Directions: Melt butter in a non-reactive saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and saute till soft. Add remaining ingredients and simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow mixture to cool to room temperature before using. Use to marinate pork shoulders, country ribs or chops Makes 11/2 cups.

They include Thomas Nee, the former president of the Boston Police Patrolmens Association, the citys largest police union, who collected more than $3,590 in fraudulent overtime pay over a two-year period, according to an affidavit. Nee, who retired from the department last month, did not respond to requests for comment.

Also implicated is Sybil Mason, the ex-wife of fired commissioner Dennis White. Federal investigators seized Masons cellphone records as part of their ongoing probe and alleged in an affidavit that she collected $7,208 in overtime pay that she didnt earn. Mason, who did not respond to several messages, remains with the department.

Federal investigators also identified three others who allegedly received pay they did not earn: Andre Williams, accused of collecting $11,181 in fraudulent overtime pay; Darius Agnew, who allegedly collected $9,702; and Kennedy Semedo, accused of pocketing $4,594.

Agnew and Williams both retired from the department in 2019, according to city records. Semedo is on active duty. Each either declined to comment or didnt respond to messages.

The documents suggest that investigators have unearthed evidence of abuses that extend well beyond those officers who have been charged to date.

The five names appear in affidavits filed last year in the US District Court of Massachusetts by Department of Justice special agent Shena Latta that were submitted as part of search warrant applications for cellphone location records for 15 officers within the BPDs evidence unit.

The documents were filed under seal and made public in October. However, they are not linked directly in the federal court records system to any of the pending cases. A Globe reporter only recently discovered the affidavits.

Sergeant Detective John Boyle, a Boston police spokesman, has repeatedly declined to discuss the overtime scandal, citing the ongoing investigation. A spokeswoman for the US attorneys office for the District of Massachusetts also declined to respond to questions due to the continuing investigation, as did a spokeswoman for the FBI.

Two former federal prosecutors told the Globe this week that there are several reasons why some officers may be implicated but still avoid charges.

Sometimes the evidence [federal authorities] obtain doesnt corroborate their original theory, or the amounts involved are too minimal to get their attention, said Brian T. Kelly, the former chief of the public corruption unit of the US attorneys office in Massachusetts and a partner at Nixon Peabody.

Tony Fuller, a partner at Hogan Lovells who coprosecuted former House speaker Sal DiMasi on corruption charges, said some people could be negotiating pleas or cooperating with authorities. Or there might be mitigating facts and circumstances that make federal prosecution of the offenses inappropriate for certain individuals, Fuller added.

At least two unnamed officers from the evidence unit, court records show, are cooperating with the government in exchange for avoiding prosecution in the case.

Nine of the officers named in Lattas affidavits were arrested last September and charged with embezzlement and conspiracy to commit theft of federal program funds. In the months since, four additional officers including a retired captain who oversaw the departments evidence warehouse have also been charged.

Nees connection to the overtime scheme represents the latest blow to the departments politically powerful patrolmens union. Last August, Patrick M. Rose, who replaced Nee as union president in 2014, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of indecent assault on a child under 14.

Nee, who also served as president of the National Association of Police Organizations, rose to prominence here in the early 2000s, amid the unions fierce contract battles with then-mayor Thomas M. Menino.

As union president, Nee helped organize a variety of protests, in one case attempting to bar Menino in 2003 from the citys annual Labor Day breakfast. In 2000, he pushed hard against then-commissioner Paul Evanss calls for police reforms aimed at holding problem officers more accountable.

Nee, who argued that the departments internal discipline process was unfair to rank-and-file officers, said in an interview at the time that if a cop took the tack of Paul Evans, he would find his ass in federal prison.

Larry Calderone, the unions current president, did not respond to a request for comment.

The widening overtime scandal comes as the department has continually vowed to curb such abuses.

Despite a number of embarrassing episodes, including a 2015 department audit that showed officers were routinely paid for time they didnt work, it remains unclear what steps the department has taken to curb such abuses.

Last year, the department touted the 2019 promotion of Marcus Eddings to superintendent, tasked with overseeing overtime and paid detail earnings as a significant step in shoring up abuses. But in his first 14 months on the job, Eddings failed to open a single investigation into overtime irregularities, a spokesman for the agency confirmed last year. The department has repeatedly declined to discuss Eddingss more recent work.

For now, it remains unclear how long or deeply federal investigators intend to dig, though recent signs point to a widening scope; according to court filings, authorities have begun to examine overtime records going further back in time.

Acting Mayor Kim Janey, who in recent weeks has been engulfed in a messy legal battle with White, has so far been silent on the growing overtime scandal. On Tuesday, her administration declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

Despite the best efforts of K-12 school custodial and maintenance crews, the deteriorating condition of many schools across the country makes them unsafe for students and staff. NBC News reports that public school buildings conditions have worsened throughout the years and schools across the country are calling for more federal help to restore old and damaged buildings.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office released a report last June on the condition of K-12 school facilities and found that public schools across the country need heat and air conditioning repairs. Many contain lead in old paint on the walls and in the drinking water due to outdated pipes. Some suffer from leaks and low drainage during heavy rainstorms, and others still use 1930s-era boilers, among other issues. The report was the first comprehensive picture of the dilapidated state of school facilities since Congress tried to call attention to the problem nearly 25 years ago, according to NBC News.

The conditions have worsened throughout the years at many schools, and environmental engineering experts and local officials worry that not even financial assistance from the federal government can fix the issue.

It really is a national tragedy when you start looking at these schools and understand what kids are subjected to, Jerry Roseman, an environmental engineer for the Philadelphia teachers union, told NBC News.

The American Rescue Plan would put US$193 billion into schools. According to the U. S. Education Department, this money can be used on school facility repairs and improvements to reduce the risk of virus transmission and exposure to environmental health hazards, as well as inspection, testing, maintenance, repair, replacement, and upgrade projects to improve the indoor air quality in school facilities.

However, the backlog of school maintenance and repair projects nationwide is estimated at $500 billion, according to the 21st Century School Fund. Additionally, schools are cautioned against new construction projects because federal financial funding is set aside to remedy learning loss and to hire teachers and support staff members.

School districts also have the financial pressure of adding new security features in response to the numerous school shootings.

Nikolai Vitti, superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools Community District, told NBC News, When I became superintendent [in 2017], the most glaring example of disparity was the infrastructure like decaying ceiling tiles, lack of heat in the winter and stifling conditions during the warmer months. Thats a Third World country infrastructure issue, not something that we should be thinking about in America, he said.

On the same day that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that masks were not required if people are fully vaccinated, a worker at a New York CVS has been charged for taking vaccination cards from his work.

Nassau County police said Zachary Honig, 21, took eight COVID-19 vaccination cards that had been filled in with vaccine information but no patient names, in addition to 54 blank vaccination cards. The documents were found in Honings car during a sweep of an alleged high-crime area by the departments Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response team, police told WNBC.

They were taken within the last couple of days, with the intent to share them with family members and friends, so that they could go into venues and possibly even use them at schools, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told WNBC.

Honig told police when he was arrested, I sell the cards to kids, so they can go to school, WCBS reported. But they dont believe he had sold any.

The man has been fired and CVS said it is working with police on the investigation, WNBC reported.

The cards have not been used as proof of documentation for New Yorks Excelsior Pass, the states vaccination passport, as it works with the card and a database.

The FBI says that it is illegal to have a fake vaccination record card.

Not only could you unknowingly spread the virus, you actually could be prosecuted since the cards have an official government seal and could be punishable under Title 18 of the United States Code, Section 1017 and any other laws that could apply.

Matthew McConaughey's new book, "Greenlights," follows his journey from a high school foreign ... [+] exchange student to a critically acclaimed actor.

It began with Ziploc bags. Inside each, the fragmented collection of journals, napkins, tape recordings and travel trinkets that Matthew McConaughey had been storing since he was a teenager came to light again. As the Academy Award-winning actor began to unpack them, he found himself transported once again to his pastto Texas, Australia, Malibu and the turbid waters of the Amazon.

This week, as Fathers Day approaches, I sat down with McConaughey to talk about those adventures, many of which are chronicled in his new book, Greenlights.

Joe Sills: Lets talk about Greenlights. I dont know if you set out to write a travel book, but to me this is a travel book.

Matthew McConaughey: Yep. Its a travel book.

Joe Sills: It is this compilation of incredible events throughout your life that you somehow had the foresight to write down and put on record. Did you know when you were writing these things down that they would become a book one day?

Matthew McConaughey: I didnt know that they would become a book, but I had a hunch that I would be prudentand it was worthwhileto keep writing them down, that one day I might be able to look at them and find common denominators of what I learned in life...what worked and what didnt.

I had a good discipline of writings things down, whether it was with a Sharpie on my arm or notes that I would take a picture of, or a napkin, a coaster, a recording on a cassette or writing in my journal. Over the years, my desk would get full and I would find time to put things in a Ziploc. Four or five years ago, I said, Lets go open up that treasure chest of all of those journals and see what youve got.

Joe Sills: In some cases, you crack that seal and youre back in your own head decades ago. What was that like?

Matthew McConaughey: It was sort of intimidating. I wasnt sure if I was going to enjoy what I saw. It was embarrassing sometimes. Sometimes, I would shake my head shamefully. But then, as I got into it, I started to notice that it was funnier than I thought. The stuff I thought I was going to be embarrassed about, I laughed at myself about.

Maybe I was able to laugh because I had learned that life lesson, or maybe some of the offenses I had committed I was still repeat offending. Some of the stuff I felt shameful about, I had forgiven myself for, or I realized it was time to.

Probably the coolest thing was seeing that the things I was writing about at 15the subjects I was interested inI am still interested in at 50. How does the world work? What is my relationship in it? What is an idiosyncrasy of someone I found funny?

I always wrote those things down so I would not forget then. When I looked back, I realized I actually remembered more than I forgot.

Joe Sills: One of the things that surprised me in this book is that you spent a long time living out of a van and traveling around America. This is after youve become a well-known person in society. Tell me what that was like.

Matthew McConaughey: I had lived in Hollywood for a little while. I was successful. I still needed to audition for some roles, but a lot of roles were blind offers to me for the success I already had. People knew what kind of work I would do, so I was getting some offers without having to audition.

Im at a time in my life where I am not really meeting any strangers. Everybody knows my name and has a preconceived notion of who I am. I didnt feel like I was seeing true and honest behavior.

I love to drive. Its my favorite place to think. Its my favorite place for ideas. I love to explore the country and I like to be able to change my backyard at a moments notice. It was me and my dog, and we just hit it.

That van was my front row seat. That was my acting class, spending time with myself and other strangers if I wanted to.

I wanted to create resistance for myself. You see it from the Africa trip to the Amazon trip to touring America in a van. The idea was, Go where nobody knows your name and see if you can hustle. See what you can get. I wanted to give myself those very basic, practical challenges like breaking down on the highway or having a flat tire and you dont have a AAA card and you dont have OnStar.

On the road is where I found those challenges. Plus, I got to see some of the great comedians of the world who didnt know they were comedians.

The things trailer park life people say...They are all transient anyways, so we were like sailers on the highways of America. The trailer park is like your port. You dock for a while, you dont have to say your name or show your ID.

I liked being a little undercover, but I also thought it was cool that if someone saw me in the trailer park maybe they thought they were on Mars for a second.

Joe Sills: What is a green light to you?

Matthew McConaughey: A green light is an affirmation. A green light says go. More, please. Yes. Double down. Continue on. Move forward. Lets go.

That is a literal version of a green light from a highway.

We all love green lights. We want our life to be green lights because we want to move forward and keep dancing. We want to evolve and say, I am not running into any resistance. But there has to be resistance to evolve. That resistance is yellow and red lights.

A yellow light is running into a problem that makes you stop and pause. A red light stops you in your tracks.

I found that, in some ways, I engineered green lights in my own life. I took sacrifices today that would give me more freedom in the future. That is where the title comes from.

Joe Sills: Can you give us an example?

Matthew McConaughey: Early on, how to be a good friend. When I was a good friend, I stepped outside of myself to do something for someone else when they needed it even though it was going to take up some of my time or I would rather be doing something else. I noticed that when I did that, those friends came back later in life when I needed them. I noticed they were out in the world on my behalf when I wasnt even around. They were paving ways of good fortune and good word on me going forward, which opened up more opportunities and gave me more freedom.

Sometimes, it was choosing little things like not to gossip on someone else when they werent there. Yeah, I might create a green light in that moment but as soon as I leave that person I was talking to is going to lose respect for me. Theyre going to realize if I talk noise on you when youre not around, I might do the same thing to them. Then, I lose a potential ally in this world.

Preparation. Like for a job interview, so you dont show up sweating and going, I am completely ill-prepared. Yeah, I might have had a good time and drinks with my friends on Friday. That was a green light in that moment, but now I am at a red light.

Joe Sills: Now you show up on set with a script thats all in Spanish.

Matthew McConaughey: Yeah. And its a monologue for me!

Joe Sills: There are so many funny stories in Greenlights, that made me laugh, but I want to talk to you about a red light. I want to talk to you about your dad. You are on set at Dazed and Confused and its your first big break. Then, hes gone. Is that a red light?

Matthew McConaughey: Major red light.

Joe Sills: What was it like to balance that professional high with the low of the moment?

Matthew McConaughey: So, Im five days into working on my first acting gig. I am as high as I can be, I mean personally as turned on as I have ever been in my life. I am 21, I feel like Im doing something I am good at and I have an innate ability to do. People are telling me Im good at it.

Im getting paid $320 a day and I am going, Wow. This is as much fun as I have ever had and I am getting paid for it!

Then, dad. Boom. He dies.

At that time, as much as it was personally a highlight of my life to be able to act, there was no question which had more importance. My father passing away was, Okay. Drop it. Im out of here. Im not asking permission. I gotta go home.

I really didnt think about the acting I had to do. It was pain and loss and confusion. I didnt think my dad could be killed. I thought he was the abominable snowman. I had never even considered him not being alive in this life. He was a bear of a man who had an immune system like a viking.

Yeah, he lived fully and lived hard, but he wasnt close to leaving this worldnot in my eyes. Then, all of a sudden he was gone. Out of the blue. Boom.

You know, death makes me so tired. Even to this day, I go to a hospital and get narcoleptic. So when dad died, I would pass out on the kitchen counter while we were talking about dad dying. My mom and brothers would still be talking, then I would wake up and pick up where they left off.

We had a wake, which he wanted. Friends came from all over the country for his wake. Im there. Im the 21-year-old youngest son, the idealist who held my father and what he taught me in such regard. That weekend, I started to learn that lesson you learn when you lose a parent. I learned that there was a difference between the message and the messenger.

Joe Sills: Eventually, you get back on set. Do you feel like youre acting for him then? Are you pushing forward for him now?

Matthew McConaughey: In a way. My heals were more firmly on the ground after dad died. I think they were pretty firmly there even while I was acting as Wooderson. But now, this is where the green light asset from a major red light like that comes in.

Now, the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in my life at that time this thing I love to do and I am getting paid for, that five days prior became the most important thing in my lifebecomes second place. The death of my father was more important.

What does that mean? It means the fact that something with so much import as this great opportunity I was living, acting, was number two? Id say I became a better actor that day.

GAZA CITY, GAZA STRIP - The Gaza Strip was pounded this week by hundreds of Israeli strikes from sea, land and air, while the enclave's militant Hamas rulers fired hundreds of rockets into Israel.

It's the fourth round of major conflict between Israel and Hamas since 2008, with the tiny enclave's more than 2 million Palestinian residents bearing the brunt of the deaths and the destruction.

The latest eruption of violence has raised the specter of another devastating war and once again drawn international attention to the impoverished, densely populated strip.

Here's a look at the Gaza Strip and its place in the Middle East conflict.

A narrow coastal strip

Gaza, sandwiched between Israel and Egypt, is 40 kilometers (25 miles) long and 10 kilometers (6 miles) wide. It was part of the British-ruled Palestine Mandate before the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation, when it came under Egypt's control.

Large numbers of Palestinians who fled or were driven from what is now Israel ended up in Gaza, and the refugees and their descendants now number 1.4 million, accounting for more than half of Gaza's population.

Israel captured Gaza, along with the West Bank and east Jerusalem, in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians want all three territories to form their future state.

The first Palestinian intifada, or uprising, erupted in Gaza in 1987 the same year Hamas was founded and later spread to the other occupied territories. The Oslo peace process in the 1990s established the Palestinian Authority and gave it limited autonomy in Gaza and parts of the occupied West Bank.

The Hamas takeover

Israel withdrew its troops and Jewish settlements from Gaza in 2005, after a second and far more violent intifada.

The following year, Hamas won a landslide victory in Palestinian elections. That triggered a power struggle with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party, culminating in a week of clashes in 2007 that left Hamas in control of Gaza.

Hamas has done little in the way of imposing Islamic law on Gaza, which was already very conservative. But it has shown no tolerance for dissent, arresting political opponents and violently suppressing rare protests against its rule.

The militant group has remained firmly in power through three wars and a 14-year blockade.

The blockade

Israel and Egypt imposed the crippling blockade after the Hamas takeover. Israel says it's needed to keep Hamas and other militant groups from importing arms. Rights groups say the blockade is a form of collective punishment.

The closures, along with years of misrule and Hamas' long-running feud with the Palestinian Authority, have devastated Gaza's economy. Unemployment hovers at around 50%, power outages are frequent and the tap water is badly polluted.

Palestinians face heavy movement restrictions that make it difficult to travel abroad for work, study or to visit family, and often refer to Gaza as the world's largest open-air prison.

The wars

Hamas and Israel have fought three wars and several smaller battles. The worst so far was the 2014 war, which lasted for 50 days and killed about 2,200 Palestinians, more than half of them civilians. Seventy-three people were killed on the Israeli side.

Israel's airstrikes and incursions into Gaza have left vast swaths of destruction, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble and thousands forced to shelter in U.N. schools and other facilities. Israel says it makes every effort to avoid civilian casualties and accuses Hamas of using Gazans as human shields.

Palestinian militants have fired thousands of rockets into Israel. The vast majority are intercepted by Israeli missile defenses or land in open areas, but they sow widespread fear and can bring life to a standstill. Their range has steadily increased in recent years, with some striking as far as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, major metropolitan areas.

Earlier this year, the International Criminal Court launched an investigation into possible war crimes in the Palestinian territories. It is expected to scrutinize the actions of both Israel and Palestinian militants in the 2014 war.

The ICC has also expressed concern about the latest violence.

For elephant seals - one of the most distinctive of the 33 species that comprise the world's seal family - it is hard work to stay fat.

Scientists have conducted the most thorough study to date of the unique feeding behavior of northern elephant seals, focusing on the females of the species during arduous two-month post-breeding migrations in the northeastern Pacific Ocean.

The seals were found to spend upwards of 20 hours every day - and sometimes a full 24 hours - in continuous deep-diving to feed on multitudes of small fish, rather than the larger prey favored by other deep-diving marine mammals, to gain the body fat essential for successful reproduction and insulation in the frigid depths. They fed 1,000 to 2,000 times daily.

"It is not easy to get fat," said marine biologist Taiki Adachi of the University of St Andrews in Scotland, who led the study published this week in the journal Science Advances.

The researchers tracked 48 female elephant seals from Ao Nuevo State Park in California, site of an important breeding colony, as they covered vast ocean distances. Their round-trip migration was up to around 3,700 miles (6,000 km).

They based their findings on data obtained from 2011 and 2018 using three small removable devices: one attached under the jaw that counted the number of times they fed and measured their depth; a satellite tracker attached atop the head that provided location information; and a "smart" video camera with an infra-red LED light flash, motion tracker and another depth sensor, also atop the head.

Elephant seals get their name from the prominent noses of the males that resemble an elephant's trunk. There are two species - the northern elephant seal and the slightly larger southern elephant seal. The two are the world's biggest seals and the largest marine mammals other than whales.

Male northern elephant seals may reach 13 feet long (4 meters) and weigh up to 4,500 pounds (2,000 kg). Females are substantially smaller, getting up to about 10 feet (3 meters) in length and 1,300 pounds (590 kg). The males feed only in coastal waters.

Some large marine mammals rely upon deep dives to forage for meals, with more food needed based on the animal's size. Sperm whales, perhaps the heavyweight champions of the deep dive, hunt for large prey like giant squid.

The female elephant seals, also large but not on the scale of a sperm whale, have devised a different solution - eating huge amounts of small fish. But it is laborious to catch enough small fish to meet the energy needs of such a large animal.

"They continuously dive, for long periods of time - 20 minutes on average and about 100 minutes at maximum - and deep - 500 meters (1,640 feet) on average and about 1,500 meters (4,920 feet) at maximum - with only a few minutes breathing at the surface," Adachi said.

"During the two-month migration, they never come back to the land. The sleeping hours in at-sea animals is not fully understood. But, based on our record of extreme foraging, their available time for sleeping should be less than 20% of the day," Adachi added.

The range of the northern elephant seal spans the Pacific coast of the United States, Canada and Mexico. They generally breed and give birth in California and Baja California, usually on offshore islands, from December to March, and fast during mating season, losing perhaps a third of their body weight.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A federal judge on Thursday sentenced former East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton and his former assistant to one year of probation for torpedoing a covert federal bribery investigation into other public officials.

Norton, who pleaded guilty to obstructing justice, told his assistant Vanessa Veals about the ongoing investigation after federal authorities interviewed him in September 2018 and warned him not to tell anyone about it. Veals, in turn, told others about the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Chelsea Rice said in court Thursday that the government terminated its investigation as a result.

It impeded the governments ability to do what it needed to do to investigate public corruption, Assistant U.S. Attorney Chelsea Rice said during Nortons sentencing hearing on Thursday.

Norton told U.S. District Court Judge Dan Polster that he was 100 percent guilty. He said that he constantly replayed his misdeeds in his mind.

Im ashamed, Norton said. I made the wrong choice. I apologize to everyone that Ive wronged.

Polster handed down the sentences during a hearing held over Zoom. The judge presided over a portion of the sentencing conducted under seal, and court officials closed it to the public.

Polster told Norton, who faced a maximum of six months in federal prison under sentencing guidelines, that he usually sends people who obstruct justice and compromise undercover investigations to prison. The judge said he believed Norton learned his lesson and is unlikely to commit any more crimes.

Its not because I dont think what you did was very serious, Polster said.

Veals, who also pleaded guilty to obstructing justice, told Polster she regretted her actions.

FBI agents and the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Housing and Urban Development were looking into allegations of bribery and fraud in East Cleveland that city officials said involved demolition contracts.

Federal prosecutors opened a grand jury investigation in 2017 after Norton had left office, and voters elected current East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King. Federal authorities interviewed Norton in September 2018 and told him about the investigation and not to tell anyone other than his attorney about it, the charges said.

Norton told Veals about the investigation and his interview that same day and denied doing so when federal agents asked him about it later, according to court documents.

Prosecutors bought charges against Veals after federal agents said she told another city employee about the investigation after Norton told her. She is also accused of forging another city employees signature on East Cleveland city letterhead after Norton emailed her and asked her to have that employee sign them.

Veals later deleted the emails and attachments that Norton had sent to her, the charges said.

Norton served on East Cleveland City Council from 2004 until he was elected mayor in 2009. Voters ousted him from office in a 2016 recall election.

His attorney, John Mitchell, told Polster that Norton is focused on raising his children and continuing down his second path in life.

Norton is a good and decent man who made a tremendous mistake, Mitchell said.

Veals worked for the city from 2007 to 2019, according to court filings. Her attorney, Harvey Bruner, told Polster that Veals lost her job in East Cleveland as a result of her actions in this case. She has since obtained her real estate license and plans to pursue a career in that field, he said.

Emma Fierberg: I wanted to test out for myself how waking up at 4:30 affected my productivity. I woke up at 4:30 a.m. for one week, like a Navy SEAL. I've read a lot about how Navy SEALs like Jocko Willink wake up at 4:30 in the morning. Jocko famously says that discipline equals freedom.

It is Friday, two days before I start this experiment. Normally my alarm goes off five minutes before 8:00 a.m. Setting my alarm a full three and a half hours earlier is gonna be really scary. Will I survive?

The Plan

So, we're gonna try to wake up at 4:30, do some sort of exercise, some sort of activity like a puzzle, or nails, or do some cooking maybe, make some breakfast, get dressed, and I'm gonna try to get to work by 7:00, and then I will try to be in bed by 8:00 p.m.

Challenges

I know I'm gonna break this bed by 8:00 p.m. rule, because I already have plans next week that start at 7:30. The gym in my building doesn't open until 6:00, so I'm gonna try and kill an hour and a half outdoors. I don't drink coffee, so this is probably gonna be pretty hard for me. The bag cam, what are the eye bags looking like? Pre-4:30 a.m. eyes.

It is Sunday night, it is 9:42 p.m. I am going to attempt to go to sleep. That's just not enough hours.

Monday

Never have I ever cooked at 5:20 in the morning. Here we are, 7:30 a.m. I have made my lunch for the entire week, minus Friday, I have straightened my hair, and that is it. Let's see who's here. Oh, surprise! Nobody. I was a little loopy, I was a little giddy, and then around lunchtime, I got a little hangry and I ate my lunch that I made this morning, and that got my energy back up a little bit, and then, like, 1:15, 2:00, I was just.

Tuesday

It's Tuesday! So, today I woke up at 4:30 and I went for a run. I hate this so much. Not a runner. Ooh, I see a rat. Oh, a duck! Look at all the wildlife! I ran for about six minutes. High five. That's what I thought. And just like that, folks, I'm a human being before 7:00 a.m. I would never describe a run as peaceful before today, but it was. The lighting was lovely. I think exercising in the morning helped me stay a little more chipper. I felt more confident today. I would say, on a scale from zero to 10, I feel about a seven. Oh, oh, and the bag cam. How are the bags doing today? My grandma calls them suitcases.

WednesdayI turned off the alarm, and then I sat in bed on my phone for about a half an hour. And then, at 5:00, I was like, alright girl, it's time, you're gonna do a thing. And guess what I did? I painted my nails! I also painted my toenails. I did a really bad job. And then I had my phone call with my friend Dana, who lives in Israel, who's seven hours ahead of me. So that was a plus. I had an interview today with someone I've been trying to get in contact with for a while, and it went really well, so I was really hype for, like, 45 minutes, and then just crashed. I had such a hard time this morning. I got into work and I couldn't function. I'm gonna play my kickball game, and I'm gonna try to go to bed by 8:00. I know that's not gonna happen, but I need to actually try. The bedtime is what's messing me up. Just got back from kickball. It's 9:12, I'm going to bed, bye!

ThursdayHi, it's Thursday, and I am much more alert! I had all this footage from a trip that I went on with my family in November, and I had never pieced it together into any sort of cohesive thing, so that's what I did this morning. I finished it, finally. And then I changed and went to the gym, then I showered and I came to work. As you can see, my energy levels are pretty high today. I cracked the formula. If you go to bed at a reasonable hour, and then you do exercise when you wake up, bag cam, bag cam. I'm looking okay today, I think.

Friday

It's Friday. Made it. I did wake up and I went for a walk at the Brooklyn Bridge, which was lovely. The weather was a perfect 72 degrees, the light was beautiful, there weren't too many clouds. Oh, it was a dream. Everyone should wake up and see the sunrise at the Brooklyn Bridge once in their life, just once. I got to call my British mom today, because they're five hours ahead, so I called her at about 5:30 this morning, and that was really nice to catch up with her. I was actually incredibly productive today for two reasons. One, I figured out the sleep schedule. Two, it's the end of Q2 and everyone was hustling. I feel okay. How do my eyes look? Conclusions

I have major respect for Navy SEALs who wake up at 4:30 in the morning, anyone who works night shifts, has wild hours, kudos, I get it now maybe a little bit, maybe not to the fullest extent, but, like, wow. All in all, at the end of this experiment, I understand now why people wake up at 4:30. You feel really good about yourself when you're productive before everyone else you know has even risen from the pillow. I don't know if this 4:30 time is gonna stick. I did like being awake at sunrise, but sunrise is like 5:30, so maybe I'll push to a 6:00 a.m., 6:30 wake up. Having a regimented wake up time was really useful for me. I could feel a little more rested, but other than that, I've achieved a lot of things I've needed to do for a long time this week. I think waking up at 4:30 really opened my eyes. Now that this week is over, I'm gonna go take a nap. I'll see you guys later.

Sea level rise caused by climate change rightly gets a great deal of attention, but problems associated with falling water levels in inland seas and lakes are not as well known.

A group of scientists says that needs to change as they warn that the effects of global warming on these lakes will "affect the livelihoods and economies of millions of people all over the world."

As an example of these effects, the German and Dutch researchers looked at the Caspian Sea, which they say will drop 30 to 60 feet by the end of this century as evaporation increases dramatically.

The Caspian Sea is actually the worlds largest lake. It lies between Europe and Asia and is bordered by Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Since the 1990s, water levels in the Caspian have dropped a few inches every year.

A decline of 30 feet would uncover nearly 36,000 square miles of land or an area the size of Portugal, the authors said in an article on The Conversation website.

"A genuine ecocide is around the corner," they wrote.

In their paper, "The other side of sea level change," published in Communications Earth & Environment, the scientists say that decline in sea level will severely affect the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea, which has already been damaged by pollution, oil and gas exploration and the introduction of invasive species.

The drastically lower sea levels caused by climate change will mean a loss of winter sea ice, which will affect the pupping grounds of the endangered Caspian seal.

Shallow-water habitats that provide food for fish, migrating birds and the seals will disappear.

Important wetlands on the Volga River Delta and along the Iranian coast "will be transformed beyond recognition."

Dead zones will form as pollution and nutrients flow into shallow and deeper parts of the sea.

The Caspian seal is one of the endangered, native species that will be severely affected by the emergence of the northern Caspian shelf and reduction of winter sea ice due to rising temperatures. Today, at least 99% of the pupping grounds are located there.

The loss of fishing grounds, aquaculture facilities and tourism and recreation "will have drastic socioeconomic consequences and may trigger local and regional conflicts," according to the paper by Matthias Prange, Thomas Wilke and Frank P. Wesselingh.

They say the lack of public and political awareness of the Caspian sea level decline applies to lake levels around the world, and a growing number of scientific studies predict drying caused by global warming that may lead to substantial lake level drops in Asian, African, and American basins.

"The impacts of the overlooked facet of future sea level change falling levels of lakes and seas in continental interiors on a global scale could be similarly devastating as global sea level rise, and threaten the livelihood of millions of people worldwide," the authors wrote.

"Immediate and coordinated action is needed to make up for valuable time lost. The shrinking Caspian Sea might serve as a poster child of the problem that will help to galvanize such actions."

Archaeologists in Israel have unearthed a 3,800-year-old jar that contains something surprising the skeleton of a baby.

Though such infant burials are not so uncommon, it's a mystery why the infants were buried in this way, said Yoav Arbel, an Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist who was part of the team that found the jar.

"You might go to the practical thing and say that the bodies were so fragile, [maybe] they felt the need to protect it from the environment, even though it is dead," Arbel told Live Science. "But there's always the interpretation that the jar is almost like a womb, so basically the idea is to return [the] baby back into Mother Earth, or into the symbolic protection of his mother."

The 4,000-year-old city of Jaffa, where the jar was found, is the older part of Tel Aviv, the second most populated city in Israel after Jerusalem. It was one of the earliest port cities in the world, and has been almost continuously occupied since about 900 B.C., Arbel said

"We're talking about a city that was ruled by a lot of different people," Arbel said. "Let's say that a lot of flags flew from its mast before Israel's flag of today."

Despite how strange the baby burial seems to modern eyes, it's not an unusual find for the region.

"There are different periods when people buried infants in jars in Israel," Arbel said. "The Bronze Age all the way to less than 100 years ago."

The finds were detailed in the 100th issue of the journal Atiqot, which includes more than 50 other studies on archaeology from Jaffa.

Because Jaffa has been almost continuously used for four millennia, the other finds described in the journal span the Hellenistic, Crusader and Ottoman periods. For instance, at another site, Arbel and his team found a big rubbish pit brimming with pieces of imported amphorae (ceramic vessels) dating to the Hellenistic period, from the fourth to the first centuries B.C. These roughly 2,300-year-old amphorae, which were used to hold wine, were crafted on various Greek Aegean Islands such as Rhodes and Kos, Arbel said. This one pit provides more evidence that trade routes between Jaffa and Greece were robust, Arbel said.

Archaeologists also found: 30 coins dating to the Hellenistic, Crusader (12th13th centuries), late Ottoman (late 18thearly 20th centuries) and British Mandate (1942) periods; the remains of at least two horses and pottery dating to the Ottoman Empire; 95 glass vessel fragments from Roman and Crusader times; and 232 seashells, including those from the Mediterranean Sea, land snails and three mother-of-pearl buttons.

There's also the witty, ancient Greek mosaic discovered near a A.D. fourth- or fifth-century necropolis, saying "Be of good courage, all who are buried here. This is it!"

In essence, it means "this is life!" and that death is everyone's shared destiny, said Zvi Greenhut, head of the publication department at the IAA, told Live Science.

Paul and Rita Linton laugh Thursday afternoon as they try to remember when they. . .

CELINA - Sunlight seeped into Paul and Rita Linton's Celina home through tall, floor-to-ceiling windows in mid-December.

The extra light warmed the room, but it wasn't necessary. The room was already light and warm as the Lintons spoke about their relationship and love for each other. The couple are celebrating 73 years of marriage today.

"It doesn't seem that long ago," Rita Linton, 91, said with a tinge of surprise at how quickly time has passed.

The pair met through mutual friends when they were in high school. Both are from Van Wert County and lived through World War II. Paul Linton said his parents would ration gasoline like many families did at the time. Most families would make one trip into town, usually on a Saturday, and let their kids run around Main Street while they ran errands.

Rita Linton was a regular at the roller rink, and Paul Linton had his dad's car the night they met. He offered to drive her home and later offered to take her on a date on Easter Sunday.

Dates on holidays are a pattern with the Lintons. Paul Linton, also 91, said his parents married on Christmas Day and he wanted the same thing. The best they could do was Christmas Eve.

The couple married on Christmas Eve, 1947, when they were both 19. The two were wed at a parsonage in Van Wert, with two of their friends as their only witnesses.

Rita Linton described the day as simple and relatively plain. Her father had died, and she would never have asked her mother to help pay for the special day.

Quick-witted and more outspoken than her husband, she said looking back it may have been wiser to have a different wedding date. People already had plans, no photographers were available, and they didn't really have a honeymoon planned. Paul Linton said they spent their wedding night in Columbus and had wedding photos taken a few weeks afterward.

"It was kind of dumb," she said with a chuckle. "The holidays are always busy, and you cheat yourself out of a gift."

The two lived with Paul Linton's father for a while until they found a place of their own to rent.

"It was a shack, but we were happy," he said.

The Lintons have cycled through several different career paths throughout their lives. While they lived in their "shack," the couple raised chickens and Paul Linton farmed about 80 acres for a local farmer until he died.

After that, they worked at an apple orchard in Mendon. The Lintons said while the working conditions weren't their favorite, they enjoyed getting their three young children involved in making cider or picking apples.

The couple moved to a farmhouse near Celina in the early 1960s, where they were proud to see their children blossom and thrive. Paul Linton worked at the New Idea Co. for more than 22 years, while his wife worked at National Seal and later as a nurse at Van Wert Hospital for 14-15 years.

Eventually, Paul Linton began work at Tractors Inc. and worked his way up the ranks from shop worker to president and then became a major shareholder of the company.

After he retired he took up woodworking, which he has done for more than 20 years. Rita Linton gushed about how her husband makes gorgeous stained bowls, decorations and containers, which largely go to the grandkids nowadays.

She said she could be a lot to handle, especially when the pair were in the early stages of their relationship. Sensitive, extroverted and outspoken, the retired nurse said she and her husband had to learn how to communicate effectively.

Paul Linton agreed. The complete opposite, he is more soft-spoken, not one to complain and hasn't been known to share his feelings readily.

"One thing that's very important is to share your life, your feelings, with each other," she said. "That's not to say you'll get your way all the time. But you'll be heard. Talking and sharing is part of being married."

The Lintons were realistic about their relationship. A successful 73-year marriage doesn't come without its hiccups or arguments. If the two did have a spat, Rita Linton said they made a point of never going to bed mad at each other.

"There are times you get aggravated, but try not to go to bed angry," she advised.

Their faith has also played a large role in their relationship. Before the pandemic, the two went to church every Sunday at Grand Lake United Methodist Church. Paul Linton served on several different committees, ushered almost every Sunday and has been a trustee.

Rita Linton related back to the Bible when she spoke of what she loved most about her husband.

"He has the patience of Job," she said warmly. "He'd have to have (patience) to live with me. I speak how I feel. If something hurts me, I let him know. I don't hold it in. And he may not give me the right answers, what I want to hear, but he has the patience of Job."

Paul Linton attributes his success - as a father, a businessman and a husband - to his wife. Knowing she was raising the kids to be good people, keeping the lights on at home all while finding time to work gave him room to succeed.

"She raised the kids, kept the books, kept the bills paid," he said. "I could do more work and be more successful with her help at her home."

A spouse is a person you cherish for a lifetime, despite bumps in the road and obstacles in the way. Paul Linton said even now at 91, some things he wishes he would have done differently to treat his wife the way she deserves. He advised young couples to keep the future in mind.

"You look back at all the things you should have done for her that you didn't," he said. "It's kind of late now to do it. But you look back, there's a lot more things you should have done for your partner than what you actually did."

The Lintons have shared a lifetime of love, along with three children, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

"They're all over the place," Paul Linton joked.

Getting the family together to celebrate Christmas and their anniversary is out of the question this year thanks to the pandemic. However, the two are more than happy to spend their time celebrating by thanking God for their long, happy lives together.

"We share our successfulness and being here to God," Rita Linton said. "Give him the credit (for) keeping us here and keeping us going."

In a turbulent year of ups and downs mostly downs there were still a few bright spots within the Asian and Asian American community that stood out. Here are our top 10 Asian and Asian American achievements of 2020.

1. Kamala Harris and many firsts

Kamala Harris became the first Black and Indian American woman to become the vice president-elect with the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. She made history again when she and President-Elect Joseph Biden were named Times Person of the Year. Harris is the first vice president to be featured on the cover and be named Times Person of the Year.

2. Asian Americans made history again this election

Democrat Adrian Tam becomes the only openly gay Asian American in Hawaiis House of Representatives. Tam beat Nicholas Ochs, a leader of the Hawaii chapter of the Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group, with 63%t of the vote.

Democrat Nikil Saval becomes the first South Asian American elected to Pennsylvanias state senate.

Democrats Jenifer Rajkumar and Zohran Mamdani made history when they became the first South Asians voted into the lower house of the New York state legislature.

Democrat restaurateur and activist Francesca Hong won the 76th Assembly District becoming the first Asian American to serve in the Wisconsin state Legislature.

Democrat Marilyn Strickland, a former mayor of Tacoma, will be the first Black person to represent the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Idaho, and Oregon) in Congress and will be the first Korean American woman ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Democrat Mai Vang became the first Asian woman to be elected to the Sacramento City Council.

Democrat Alex Lee won Californias 25th Assembly District race. At 25, hell become Californias youngest Asian American state legislator ever, the first openly bisexual state legislator, and the first Gen Z assembly member.

Democrat Jocelyn Yow became the youngest woman of color to be sworn in as the mayor of Eastvale in Riverside County in California.

Republican Michelle Steel flipped Californias 48th District, which encompasses most of the Orange County coast. She will be one of the first Korean American women to serve in U.S. Congress.

Republican Young Kim won a congressional seat in Orange Countys 39th Congressional District.

3. Asias impressive COVID-19 response

Asian countries and city-states like Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore have generated global praise and envy from other countries for their impressive responses to the global pandemic. Having learned from the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak of 2003, these governments were better prepared for COVID-19.

For instance, in Taiwan, government officials rapidly produced and implemented a task list, and ramped up mask production early on. Experts say that closing Taiwans borders early and tightly regulating travel have made a tremendous impact fighting the virus.

Here in the United States, Asians, especially Asian immigrants, were among the first to adopt judicious COVID response strategies such as mask-wearing, hand-washing, and social distancing, showing that there is always much to be learned from the Asian community, at home and abroad.

4. Panda gives birth

A little black and white miracle was born in August at the Smithsonians National Zoo in Washington, DC. Zookeepers were surprised to find out that giant panda Mei Xiang had tissue consistent with fetal development during her ultrasound a week before she gave birth to Xiao Qi Ji (little miracle in Chinese). Cheers to some paw-sitive and cute news for 2020.

5. Dave Chang wins $1 million

Famed chef David Chang became the first celebrity to win $1 million on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for Southern Smoke Foundation, a nonprofit that provides crisis relief organization for people in the food and beverage industry. With the help of his friend and ESPN journalist Mina Kimes (a fellow Korean American), they answered the million dollar question correctly.

Chang was asked to name the first U.S. president to have electricity in the White House.

6. Fifteen-year-old Gintanjali Rao was named Times Kid of the Year

Gintanjali Rao was named Time magazines first-ever Kid of the Year. She uses technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying.

She is on a mission to create a global community of young innovators to solve some of the worlds biggest problems. Rao was chosen from more than 5,000 nominees.

7. Asians who are out of this world

Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi successfully completed NASAs first commercial crew program flight, as part of SpaceXs Crew Dragon spacecraft Resilience.

Jonny Kim will be the first Korean American to join a NASA mission in space. The 36-year-old, who was once a Navy Seal and a doctor, will also be part of NASAs 2024 missions to walk on the moon.

Aerospace and defense company Northrop Grumman announced that they would name their new spacecraft after the late Kalpana Chawla (S.S. Kalpana Chawla), who was the first Indian-born woman to fly into space.

8. Asians making statements in the literary scene

Taiwanese American Charles Yu won this years National Book Award for Fiction for Interior Chinatown. The novel tackles on-screen Asian representation and stereotypes. The book has also been longlisted for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction and was also a finalist or shortlisted for the Prix Mdicis tranger award. This is Yus fourth book.

In addition, the Whiting Foundation has awarded Ling Ma as one of 10 emerging writers and also with $50,000, for Severance, her fictional debut novel about a zombie pandemic.

On the nonfiction side, the Whiting Foundation awarded Jia Tolentino with the honors.

9. Overdue recognition for Chinese American veterans

An estimated 20,000 Chinese Americans who fought under the American flag during World War II have been given official recognition by the U.S. Congress for their patriotism and service. They were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, which is the highest honor that Congress can award.

10. Carvey Ehren Maigue wins sustainability award

Carvey Ehren Maigue, a 27-year-old engineering student from Mapua University in the Philippines, became the first-ever winner of James Dyson Awards Sustainability Award. He invented a technology, AuREUS, or Aurora Renewable Energy and UV Sequestration, that turns spoiled, damaged crops into solar panels. He beat out 1,700 other entries from 27 countries and won the 30,000 (USD $39,931) cash prize.
