With Californias red light cameras, are pictures admissible evidence?

This is the intersection in Inglewood, California, where Carmen Goldsmith was captured running a red light.

Carmen Goldsmith was driving her BMW through Inglewood, a Los Angeles suburb, when she ran a red light. She instantly became one of countless people nationwide ticketed by a red light camera.

The California woman challenged her citation in a trial court, where she was found guilty and fined $436. She appealed and lost.

In 2013, red light camera use declined in the US for the first time.

Goldsmith's case, The People of California v. Goldsmith, is a 5-year-old legal odyssey scheduled to be heard on Thursday (today) before the California Supreme Court in Los Angeles. The courts verdict likely will put to rest the admissibility of red light camera evidence in the countrys most populous state, where red light violations are by far the highest. (Typically theyre in the $100 range in the rest of the country.)

As Ars recently reported, red light cameras have reached a turning point across the United States. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a non-profit largely funded by auto insurance companies, last year was the first time in nearly two decades that the number of American cities with red light cameras had fallenthe systems were installed in 509 communities as of November 2013.

While a single-year drop may not ultimately mean much, legislators across the country are increasingly agitated about the cameras. Bills are also pending in Florida and Ohio that would ban the devices entirely. A state representative in Iowa has also twice introduced legislation to ban red light cameras (he was not successful). Part of this backlash has to do with theperception that red light cameras are a moneymaking scheme, pure and simple.

The case before California's high court is being closely watched, drawing amicus briefs on both sides in considerable numbers. A notable one comes from Redflex, the company that Inglewood and many other California municipalities contract with to employ their red light camera setup.

In fact, based on our research, we have not been able to locate any other infraction case in the history of this state that generated so many amicus briefs on both sides over a $436 citation! Goldsmith's lawyer wrote in a petition to the court.

The California Supreme Court is hearing the case in an attempt to answer three basic questions:

Top Shelf: Red Wings following Nyquist's lead

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The last time the Detroit Red Wings failed to make the playoffs, Gustav Nyquist was less than a year old.

Currently, the 24-year-old Swede and other young Red Wings are doing their best to ensure Detroit keeps its lengthy postseason streak alive.

Nyquist has taken the offensive lead for the Red Wings during the second half of a season that has seen Detroit decimated by injuries to key players. After entering 2013-14 with only four goals in 40 career games, he has exploded for 28 goals in 51 outings this season, including a staggering 23 markers over the last 28 games.

One of Nyquist's biggest goals came Wednesday evening against the visiting Boston Bruins, a team that entered the contest with a 15-0-1 record in its previous 16 games.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the latter stages of the third period, the speedy winger picked up a loose puck in his own zone before torching Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara down the middle of the ice for a breakaway goal. The tally stood up for the win and Boston went down in regulation for the first time since March 1.

The highlight-reel score gave Nyquist a goal in three straight games and he has lit the lamp 12 times over his past 10 trips to the ice. More importantly, the win gave Detroit a three-point lead over Columbus for the first of the Eastern Conference's two wild card spots and moved the Wings four points clear of ninth-seeded Toronto.

Of course, with six games left on Detroit's regular-season slate, making the playoffs is far from a certainty. However, if the Red Wings avoid missing the postseason tournament for the first time since the 1989-90 campaign, Nyquist's contributions during the stretch run will be the biggest reason why.

Detroit is second only to Pittsburgh this season in terms of man-games lost to injuries with 379. But while the Penguins have managed to have superstar Sidney Crosby in the lineup for all 76 games, the Red Wings have played huge stretches without their two best skaters -- Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.

Team captain Zetterberg and fellow forward Datsyuk have combined to play in only 84 games this season, and only two since the NHL returned from the Olympic break in late February.

The good news is Datsyuk is due to play his first game since Feb. 27 when Detroit hosts Buffalo on Friday. Meanwhile, Zetterberg, who still leads the team in scoring with 48 points in only 45 games, won't be able to return from back surgery until the playoffs.

Red Sox Live Blog: Brewers Beat Sox 6-2 In Bostons Home Opener

Sports Fan Insider

Keep up with your favorite teams and athletes with daily updates.

Final, 6-2 Brewers: Gomes struck out looking, Sizemore grounded out to second, and Bogaerts popped out to second, and this ones history. A brilliant pregame ceremony wasnt followed up with a win, and the Sox fall to 2-2 on the young season.

The only second-guess after this one is whether the close play at third base in the ninth could have or should have been reviewed via replay. But honestly, there was nothing in that replay that conclusively showed the tag was being applied on Davis when he came off the bag, and theres little to no chance that it would have been overturned.

Plus, that play wasnt the one that broke things wide open, and if Mujica could have pitched better, it would have been a non-issue.

Middle 9th, 6-2 Brewers: After walking the first two batters he faced, Miller was able to strike out Davis to finally end the inning.

Trailing by four, itll be Gomes, Sizemore and Bogaerts in the bottom of the ninth. Francisco Rodriguez is in to pitch for the Brewers.

Top 9th, 2 outs, 6-2 Brewers: Mujica couldnt even get out of the inning, allowing a two-out single to Ramirez with Segura on second base (he got there via a fielders choice and a stolen base).

Farrell came out with the hook. Ugly stuff for Mujica. Ugly, ugly stuff.

Andrew Miller comes on to try to stop the bleeding.

Shailene Woodley Flashes Cleavage in a Plunging V-Neck Gown at the Berlin Premiere of DivergentSee the Pic!

by Chima Simone Tue., Apr. 1, 2014 6:00 PM PDT

Shailene Woodley continues to turn heads on the red carpet as she makes the rounds at European premieres for Divergent.

Although this time the carpet was black and her white dress was red-hot!

The 22-year-old actress arrived at the Berlin premiere Tuesdayflashing more than a hint of her dcolletage in a daring, ivory Zuhair Murad gown with gold chain detail and a deep V neckline that extended all the way to her waistline.

Her rose-colored lips and perfectly coiffed short hair complemented the smoldering look, but did nothing to divert attention from the slinky, revealing silk dress.

PHOTOS: Check out Shailene Woodley's most outrageous quotes!

Theo James as arm candy, however, is a sublime distraction.

The handsome British actor is accompanying her on this Divergentpromotional blitz and he looked absolutely wonderful dressed in dark blue suit that, unfortunately, revealed none of his hunky chest whatsoever.

But we can dream.

Watch Midnight Red Play The Hell Yeah! Game And Admit Theyd Go Naked

While Red Heads await the big launch of Midnight Reds new video for Hell Yeah, we thought wed get the guys shouting hell yeah a little early when they stopped by Entertainment Magazine. Were they up for the challenge?

In the Hell Yeah! game, the rules are simple. We ask the fivesome a question, and they answer hell yeah! or hellllll no! Would they run around New York City naked? Would they have run for president? Well, their answers might surprise you.

When it came to fessing up about whether theyd twerk with Miley Cyrus, four out of the five guys were quick to say hell yeah, but Colton Rudloff was a little more reserved.

Coltons just saying no because hes just being modest cause hes the best twerker, Eric Secharia said.

He doesnt want to out-twerk Miley, Anthony Ladao claimed.

However, attempts to get Colton to twerk during the interview failed. We tried.

Watch the video to see how Selena Gomez got Erics phone and why the band wouldnt be able to eat pizza every day for the rest of their lives.

The band will begin touring with the Wanted on their Word of Mouth tour next Monday.

NWA Red Cross Worker Heads To Washington After Deadly Mudslide

Posted on: 9:41 pm, March 31, 2014, by Katelynn Zoellner, updated on: 10:15pm, March 31, 2014

A second American Red Cross worker from Arkansas was deployed Monday to Washington state to help victims of the deadly mudslide that has so far killed 24 people.

Workers at a rescue operation is Oso, Wash., are trying to find any signs of life more than a week after the deadly mudslide.

So far, officials said more than 600 people have been involved in the relief effort of the mudslide. That now includes Linda Morgan of the Red Cross Northwest Arkansas Chapter.

Linda has an extensive experience in shelters and managing shelters, said Rick Harvey, Red Cross communications specialist. They notified that they needed her help, and as usual, she has dropped what shes doing and immediately arranged her life to where she could go.

Morgan will be getting to Washington on Tuesday to run the relief shelters for the victims of the mudslide.

I will be managing the people that manage the shelters, Morgan said. I will be in the headquarters doing paper work and making sure there is staff to run the shelters.

In the last week, the shelters have housed more than 120 people.

We provide the shelters for temporary lodging until these families can find other arrangements, Harvey said. We also are there for those people to provide support until they can get back on their feet.

The Red Cross also has served more than 10,000 meals and snacks to first responders and the affected community.

Wings' Mike Babcock passes Scotty Bowman in wins

Detroit Along with being a huge victory in the standings, Sundays 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay was a milestone for coach Mike Babcock.

The victory was No. 411 for Babcock in his career with the Red Wings, moving him past Scotty Bowman.

And Babcock could conceivably pass Jack Adams for No. 1 on the list this week. Adams heads the list with 413.

Babcocks respect and admiration of Bowman is well known. Babcock believes Bowmans career record of 1,248 regular season victories will never be broken.

Scotty is the greatest coach of all time in our business, said Babcock, who has 480 victories adding his victories in Anaheim. Scotty should be in a class by himself. Its not like I want to pass Scotty Bowman.

But Im honored. Hes a good friend and Im glad I can talk about him.

The primary reasons Bowmans record will never be touched, said Babcock, is because of Bowmans durability and the league is so different now, with the salary cap keeping organizations from becoming dynasties.

The amount of wins Scotty has, its impossible, its not going to happen, Babcock said. Youre not going to coach as many Stanley Cup champions. You cant keep teams together.

This particular Red Wings team is impressing Babcock with its competitiveness and determination.

Ive coached some good teams here, said Babcock, who coached the Red Wings to a Stanley Cup in 2008.

F1: Red Bull says it will not censor drivers

By Jonathan Noble Monday, March 31st 2014, 13:29 GMT

Red Bull insists it will never censor its drivers, after Sebastian Vettel's criticism of Formula 1's new engines caused controversy in Malaysia.

Vettel labelled the sound of 2014's turbos as 's**t' ahead of the Sepang race amid the ongoing debate about the impact of new regulations.

AUTOSPORT understands those outspoken remarks have not gone down well with FIA president Jean Todt, who will have an opportunity to speak to Vettel when he attends this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

But despite Todt feeling that Vettel's remarks were unconstructive as the sport heads into a new era, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has backed his driver, and said his outfit would never choose to silence its men.

"All the drivers are allowed to express their own opinion," he said.

"Sebastian has expressed his opinion and I don't think anybody would condemn a driver for making an opinion.

"It [his opinion] is not one that he is alone on. There are differences of opinion and everybody is entitled to one."

Suggestions that Vettel could face a disrepute charge for his comments are understood to be wide of the mark, as are rumours that the FIA could use it as leverage ahead of its appeal court hearing against Red Bull over the fuel-flow controversy.

Horner made it clear that there had been no discussions from FIA representatives about Vettel's comments in Malaysia.

Selflessness from Joe Harris helped UVA reach first Sweet 16 since 1995

Joe Harris has averaged fewer points this season than in his junior year, but his Cavaliers are making their deepest run in the NCAA tournament since 1995.

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

RALEIGH -- With its cozy two-seater cab, ample door dings and Washington plates, the Red Rocket turns heads as it sputters through Virginia's pristine campus. To capture the essence of Virginia's once-in-a-generation run to the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament, the best place to start is the bed of Joe Harris' red 1999 Ford Ranger pick-up truck. Last season, Harris' teammates placed a cream-colored couch there so he could carpool them around campus.

"We would squeeze in there and it was definitely dangerous," Virginia senior Thomas Rogers said. "But Joe took care of us. He got us where we needed to go."

With the 6-foot-6 Harris behind the wheel, UVA has driven through a season of historical mile markers. The Cavaliers won the ACC outright for the first time since 1981, won the ACC tournament for the first time since 1976 and earned a No. 1 seed for the first time since 1983. In order to do that, Harris has sacrificed statistics in order to let his teammates shoehorn into Red Rocket for their historic ride.

Harris averages three fewer shots per game compared to last season, and his scoring average fell from 16.3 points per game to 11.7. And Harris couldn't be any happier. He sets off-ball screens in the brutish ballet of Virginia's motion offense, and his Popeye biceps provide the muscle behind Tony Bennett's pack-line defense.

Harris, the son of a Washington state Hall of Fame high school basketball coach, came 3,000 miles from a town of less than 4,000 in central Washington to play for Bennett, and the trip is winding down with Virginia's first Sweet 16 since 1995, a game against No. 4 Michigan State in Madison Square Garden on Friday.

"The feel for the game, hard work, being a great teammate -- unselfishness," Virginia Coach Tony Bennett said. "It's about winning more than anything else."

*****

Growing up with three sisters at home and 12 big brothers at his dad's office, Joe Harris Jr. learned Teammate 101 well before college. From his help-side defense to the Red Rocket's communal keys, Harris has showcased those ideals from a lifetime of training.

Debate Over Red Light Cameras Heads To Ohio Courts

COLUMBUS, Ohio -

More Ohio drivers are taking their concerns regarding traffic cameras to court.

On Tuesday, attorneys representing eight drivers in Dayton filed a lawsuit against the city alleging that the cameras violate due process rights and that they improperly bypass the courts.

But a Central Ohio couple whose daughter was killed by a driver who drove through a red light say they disagree.

At 31, Sarah Oberhauser was a gifted science teacher, an accomplished athlete, and a mother.

"She was always happy, great personality," said Sarahs son, Drew Vanwinkle.

Sarah was killed one weekend in 2002 when a driver ran a red light and T-boned her.

"It was a beautiful Saturday morning and a guy was in a rush and he ran a red light," said Sarahs father, Paul Oberhauser.

Her family said it took nearly five years for them to cope with her death, but in 2007, they found a way to honor her memory. Her family decided to testify in front of lawmakers to create safer intersections.

"We have a right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and that was all taken away from her by one careless young man who ran a red light," said Paul. He and his wife, Sue, are the national co-chairs of the Traffic Safety Coalition.

2014 Preview: Boston Red Sox

Between now and Opening Day, HardballTalk will take a look at each of baseballs 30 teams, asking the key questions, the not-so-key questions, and generally breaking down their chances for the 2014 season. Next up: The Boston Red Sox.

The Big Question:Have the Red Sox taken the steps necessary to avoid a post-championship decline?

No team has repeated as World Series champions since the Yankees won three straight from 1998-2000. The Red Sox, though, didnt suffer from any championship hangovers their last two times around, winning 95 games and returning to the postseason in both 2005 and 2008.

The Red Soxdidnt desire to partake in any sort of shakeup over the winter; they just werent willing to outbid the Yankees for Jacoby Ellsbury or commit to substantial multiyear deals for fellow free agents Stephen Drew and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Replacing the trio will be either rookie Jackie Bradley Jr. or former superstar Grady Sizemore in center field, phenom Xander Bogaerts at shortstop and the much beloved A.J. Pierzynski behind the plate. Interestingly, the teams only newcomer to get a multiyear deal was new setup man Edward Mujica (two years, $9.5 million).

The pitching staff has survived almost entirely intact, with the rotation set to include Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, John Lackey, Jake Peavy and Felix Doubront. The surprising exit of Ryan Dempster turned heads he gave up $13 million to spend the year with his family but he was being viewed as a middle reliever or swingman. Replacing him in that role is left-hander Chris Capuano.

So, the Red Sox are counting on their returning stars and a gradual infusion of youngtalent to stave off any decline. Boasting one of the games very best farm systems makes that an easier choice, and if it turns out that they do need help as the season goes along, theyll have about as much artillery to pull off a trade as any team in the league.

What else is going on?

Prediction: If spring training numbers are any indication, its going to take some time for the Red Sox lineupto start clicking. Still, the bats are there to make the team a top-three offense in the AL, and the pitching staff has both top-level talent and excellent depth. The Red Soxs decision to largely stand pat could cost them a few wins and perhaps the AL East, but the team should return to the postseason in some form.

Secondplace, American League East.
