Red Sox-White Sox Live: Xander Bogaerts Error In Bottom Of Ninth Gives Chicago 2-1 Win

Final White Sox 2-1: The Red Sox lost in a tough way after a long, long game.

Burke Badenhops leadoff walk to Alejandro De Aza was wiped off, thanks to A.J. Pierzynskis strong toss to second to catch him stealing.

Alexei Ramirez then knocked a one-out single, and Badenhop struck out Tyler Flowers his fourth K of the night for the second out of the inning before it was time for another call to the bullpen.

Chris Capuano entered the game and walked the first batter he faced, Adam Eaton. Heappeared to get out of the jam whenMarcus Semien hit a routine ground ball up the middle to Xander Bogaerts.

Bogaerts throw to Mike Carp at first base was in the dirt and Carp couldnt pick it, though, and the winning run came around to score.

Thats a tough one to swallow for the Red Sox.

Mid 9th, 1-1: The Red Sox had the go-ahead run at second, but the White Sox battled to keep this game knotted at 1-1.

David Ortiz grounded out to lead off the inning, but a one-out walk to Mike Napoli warranted a call to the pen.

Donnie Veal replacedJake Petricka, and Jonny Gomes enteredthe game to pinch-hit for Daniel Nava. Gomes couldnt provide any late-inning heroics, though, whiffing on a curveball for the second out.

With A.J. Pierzynski batting, Mike Napoli showed off some heads-up baserunning, stealing second on a pitch in the dirt, but his aggressiveness might have actually hurt him. Napoli appeared to hurt his finger sliding into the bag headfirst. Fingers arent supposed to bend that way.

White Sox slip past Red Sox 2-1 on error in 9th

By PATRICK ROSE Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) - Alexei Ramirez is finding different ways of helping the White Sox earn dramatic victories.

Ramirez scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a throwing error and the Chicago White Sox edged the Boston Red Sox 2-1 on a frigid Tuesday night.

Tied at one, Red Sox reliever Burke Badenhop (0-2) allowed a one-out single to Ramirez. After Tyler Flowers struck out, Chris Capuano replaced Badenhop.

Capuano walked Adam Eaton to move Ramirez to second. Then with a 3-2 count, Marcus Semien hit a grounder to Xander Bogaerts at shortstop, who one-hopped his throw to first baseman Mike Carp.

Carp wasn't able to scoop the throw and Ramirez, who was already running on the pitch never stopped when rounding third and scored without a throw.

"There were two outs so I was going all the way with two outs, so my idea was to go ahead and get to home plate regardless of what happened," said Ramirez, who also beat the Cleveland Indians with a two-run homer in the ninth inning on Sunday.

Bogaerts was disappointed with his throw to Carp.

"It's cold weather, but that's no excuse for that play. That's a ball I should've thrown right at the chest to him," Bogaerts said. "I knew it was going to bounce, it took a weird bounce, but I should have thrown it at his chest to Carp and gone into extra innings."

The Red Sox didn't think Semien checked his swing on a 2-2 pitch that would've sent the game into extra innings.

Dining Pioneer Red Lobster Looking at Future Challenges

Published: Monday, April 14, 2014 at 2:40 p.m. Last Modified: Monday, April 14, 2014 at 2:40 p.m.

Jerry Prescott, 48, has been going to the seafood chain since he first moved to Lakeland at age 16, dining at the restaurant chains very first location along U.S. 92 in Lakeland.

I love Red Lobster, Ultimate Feast every time fish, lobster tail, crab legs, broccoli, shrimp, the whole nine yards, he said.

But ask Prescotts daughter Christine Chandler, 25, to pick a spot, and Red Lobster isnt her first choice.

I dont like seafood or the smell of seafood, but I go to spend time with my family, she said.

This disconnect between younger and older diners is one example of the problems Red Lobster faces as it heads into the future.

In December, Darden Restaurants, the Orlando-based parent company of Red Lobster, announced it would separate from the seafood chain by midsummer. This spinoff is the result of many factors:

Revenue declines over several years.

Stagnant growth

Growing number of dining alternatives that appeal to younger diners.

Jessica Simpson Stuns in Short, Sunny Yellow Dress, Shows Off Super-Fit Figure: Picture

Little Miss Sunshine! Jessica Simpson was a bright spot on the red carpet at the John Varvatos Stuart House Benefit on Sunday, April 13, in West Hollywood, where she turned heads in a short, canary yellow dress by Yigal Azrouel.

PHOTOS: Jessica's body evolution

The sexy, slim-fitting frock showed off the 33-year-old Weight Watchers spokeswoman's super-fit figure and toned, muscular legs. She paired it with sky-high white platform Saint Laurent heels and simple silver jewelry.

PHOTOS: Jessica's family album

The mom of two (to daughter Maxwell, 22 months, and son Ace, 9 months) officially reached her post-baby weight-loss goal last month. To commemorate the milestone, she shared a photo of herself in a curve-hugging Alexander McQueen dress, writing: "First time rocking a white dress this year...but not the last! Thanks @weightwatchers!" She also posted a picture of herself wearing a simple white T-shirt, hashtagging it "#goalreached."

PHOTOS: Jessica's second pregnancy

The fashion mogul famously struggled to lose weight after her first pregnancy back in 2012, but she saw results pretty quickly after giving birth to Ace last June. "This body made two amazing little human beings. I love this body and what it's capable of -- no matter what size," she said in a Weight Watchers ad earlier this year. "But this version feels really good."

In another ad the next month, she added: "I have a newfound determination that I'm really proud of. I can honestly say I've never been happier."

Sangre Chronicle > Red River > Recycling an idea, Red River heads back to drawing board

RED RIVER A new recycling committee has been established in Red River, and its members hope to start a new waste-reduction program in town soon.

Town Councilor Steve Cherry, who was elected last month, will be the liaison for the recycling committee. Cherry said he has spoken about preliminary plans with recycling professionals in the area during the last couple of weeks, but the committee still needs more input, and a plan has yet to be drawn up.

Ive had some concerned citizens who want to discard their hazardous waste like paint and stuff, and they want to talk about how to dispose of those materials properly, Cherry said, adding that the program will most likely start with the basics: plastic, glass and cardboard.

The members of the committee as of Monday (April 7) were Steve Gorsich, Steve Cherry and Chris Downs.

One incentive Cherry mentioned was the refuse costs that could potentially be alleviated by recycling. Cherry is the proprietor of Shotgun Willies restaurant in Red River.

I just know as a business owner in the summer, if we get a large delivery, we can fill up one dumpster with cardboard, alone, Cherry said. I can only imagine what the total is for the rest of the town altogether. I know all the T-shirt shops, when they get in large orders of boxes, I think it would be beneficial for them to recycle.

The time frame for the project is still in the works. Mayor Linda Calhoun said it could be six months before anything serious reaches the town council for consideration.

I hope it (starts) pretty quick, Cherry said. When we were in Los Alamos, they had just bought new equipment for their compactors, and there are some other people who may have a compactor that they may want to get rid of. We may be able to use some equipment thats just sitting around. It would just take some time to get the equipment and the process. We may have to use city employees or a company come pick it up.

In addition to their real-estate business, Calhouns family also owns Red Rivers only supermarket, Der Markt. She said the store recycles some materials with a compactor. As for the rest of the town, using city employees may not be the direction the town can go.

We have visited with Angel Fire and Eagle Nest for the last few years, talking about their recycling programs, and what Im hoping the committee will do will be to seek grant funding, decide where we want to start, because this will be brand new, Calhoun said. We need to decide what we want to do and work out the logistics of it.

Red Dawn

Being hop heads up here, we love our big hop beers, but to me, sometimes they can go a bit overboard.

I like hops in beer just like anyone else, but what I dont care for is the wrenching bitterness that comes from over-hopping a beer just for the sake of getting to put a bigger International Bitterness Unit (IBU) number on the label. One key characteristic of a world-class beer is balance. Sure, one or another aspect of a beer can be featured or highlighted by making it stand out, but the last thing I want to have to do is wash down an over-hopped beer with a glass of water to move on to something else.

One thing I do like is hop flavor. Note that hops do a number of things for beer depending on when in the brewing process they are added. Hops have to be boiled for a certain amount of time to add bitterness, but if theyre boiled for more than a few minutes the flavor they can impart is cooked off. And the first thing to go when the hops hit the brew kettle is aroma. This is why a number of hop additions are used at various times in the boil depending on what aspect of the green stuff the brewer wants to accent. Finally, dry hopping takes place after the beer is boiled and fermented; sometimes hops are put into the conditioning tanks with the beer to impart the freshest aromatic presentation possible. Conditioning is usually the last step before packaging.

There are alternatives to big IPAs when it comes to bold hopping, and red ale is one of them. As the name implies, red ales can range from amber to crimson in color. The color comes from medium malts used in the beers manufacture. The style isnt well defined and really anything goes, but a red ale typically features the beers underlying malt just a bit more than the average IPA. The hops in the beer can be all over the chart as well. The hop presence can be subdued or bold. The beer can be subtle or quite bitter, but I think the better examples are evenly balanced and with the bitterness somewhat in the background. A couple of better-known examples include Redhooks Copperhook, Green Flash Hop Head Red Ale and Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale. Ive had them all and theyre all worthy. So, Im always interested in any new iteration of red ale when it comes to town.

Heres a new one that really makes my socks go up and down: Ninkasi Brewing Companys Dawn of the Red India Red Ale is a true hybrid that sashays between a red and an IPA.

I fell in love with beers from Ninkasi as soon as they came ashore here in Alaska a couple years ago. Ninkasi beers add a unique fresh dimension to mostly hop-forward beers in an IPA loving world. Relatively new, the Eugene, Ore. brewerys been around since 2006. Per the usual story, a couple of beer loving friends who homebrewed got together and dreamed big. Some make it; some dont. Ninkasi was a hit right out of the first fermenter.

The brewery is named after the Sumerian God of fermentation, Ninkasi. The brewery remains true to its roots and sports an unofficial motto of: Believe the Goddess symbolizing the Ninkasi belief in an elevated human experience through the social enjoyment and sharing of beer. I like it. I like it a lot.

The brewerys plant is comprised of a 55-barrel system that cranks out about 95,000 barrels of craft beer a year. Note that a barrel is 31 gallons; the standard half barrel is more familiar as the ubiquitous keg . The beers distributed here, of course, and in California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Im sure more states will scramble to get Ninkasis primarily hop-forward beers as the brewery expands (its done so three times already), but Im glad were in the mix.

Ninkasis got some big ones; thats for sure. The big hop-boners in the bunch include the flagship Total Domination IPA, Tricerahops Double IPA, Believer Double Red (another favorite of mine) and a bunch of others Ive had since we were lucky enough to get them up here.

I stumbled across Ninkasi Dawn of the Red quite by accident. Sometimes I dont pay attention, even to the brands I love. Me bad, but happenstance aside, Im glad I did. And, I always love a surprise! It was the label that initially caught my eye; Ninkasis always got something creative going on when it comes to packaging their beer, and Im glad it stood out and caught my attention. I wouldnt have wanted to miss this bottled delight.

Local Red Cross volunteer heads to Wash. to help with mudslide relief

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Red Cross volunteer from Middle Tennessee is headed to Washington to help out in the aftermath of a major mudslide.

The devastating mudslide hit near Seattle in Oso, Washington last month killing more than two dozen people.

Bert Copeland is a retired registered nurse and has been a volunteer with the Nashville American Red Cross for the past three years.

"My heart is telling me I got to go," he told News 2.

Copeland said his role will be to help hundreds of American Red Cross volunteers who are assisting with relief efforts.

"My job is staff wellness being [both physical and emotional support]," explained Copeland, adding, "For the workers who go on something like this, it is very hard. I mean they are away from their normal meals, their normal housing, their normal everything and sometimes they just got to talk to somebody and I got kind of big shoulders so it works out good."

Copeland said he has helped out during other natural disasters, including volunteering for five weeks in New York and New Jersey after Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Vista votes to keep red-light cameras

VISTA Heads up, Vista motorists: The City Council opted Tuesday night to keep Vista's red-light cameras up and running for at least two more years.

The council's 4-1 vote extends for two years the citys contract with Phoenix-based Redflex Traffic Systems, which runs the camera program. It also gives the city manager the option of renewing the contract through 2018 without running it by the council.

The cameras, which snap photos of drivers who run or fail to stop completely at red lights, have been controversial in some communities, and a number of cities in the region have pulled them in recent years.

Some critics have argued the cameras are a privacy violation; others have said the devices aren't effective in reducing crashes or improving safety.

In Vista, there has been no strong outcry against the devices. City Councilwoman Amanda Rigby cast the sole no vote Tuesday against keeping the cameras. After the meeting, she said she questions their value.

The benefits of the red-light cameras were not adequately presented tonight, she said.

Other council members cited fewer collisions among their reasons for supporting the continued use of the cameras.

Councilman Dave Cowles said he had seen "numerous and excessive" attempts by motorists to beat the lights. "I don't see that anymore," Cowles said.

He also said he had questioned keeping the cameras -- until he saw the citys statistics showing a decline in crashes at Vista intersections with the devices.

City staffers, who recommended extending the camera contract, said crashes have been cut by more than half at the five intersections where the cameras have been installed for the past 10 years.

ACM Awards: Who Was Best Dressed On The Night? [Pictures]

Who looked their best at the ACM Awards on Sunday night?

The ACM awards, country musics big night out took place on Sunday and the stars were out in force bringing a glitzy red carpet display of floaty frocks and some very plunging necklines. Now we've had some time to digest the fabulous fashion, just who was best dressed on the night at the ACM awards?

Opting for something a little different Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift opted to shun the fancy frocks and go for a more edgy, sexier look. Teaming a long black skirt (which boasted a major thigh high split with a white crop top) Taylor showed just enough red carpet skin to turn heads in the right way. Though if eye catching was what you were looking for then Jamie Lynn Spears was sure to grab your attention, if not give you a bit of a headache. The newlywed's heavily patterned orange, black and white magic eye mini dress was a bit too much to take in all at once and it just left us feeling a little puzzled.

More: Who Joined Taylor Swift in Billboard's List of Top Music Moneymakers?

Shakira showed that the cut out trend is most certainly here to stay with her dark green gown. Showing a lot of peek-a-boo skin it was definitely Shakira that was bringing the sex appeal to the ACMs. The singer looked like she wouldn't be out of place as a comic book villian, but of course we mean that in the best possible way. Miranda Lambert looked stunning in a gold figure fitting dress complete with a very plunging neckline on the red carpet, really it was all about how low can you go with the necklines tongiht. Later in the night the singer showed a complete transformation when she collected her award in a pink prom dress.

Shakira At The Awards

Kellie Pickler opted for a floaty lavender dress by Romona Keveza while Cassadee Pope also embraced the chiffon in her beautiful floor length red gown. Olivia Munn also rocked the red and might have also won the lowest neckline award. Then there was Shawna Thompson, who wore a nude dress which seemed to be exploding with poppies, literally. This one was just a bit too in your face floral for the red carpet. Also going over the top was Kacey Musgraves who went all out in her powder blue Miu Miu gown. The dress featured a plunging neckline, a belt and a massive train meaning it was all a little too much for the red carpet.

As for the boys, there's only one piece of headgear you need for such an occasion, a cowboy hat. Tim McGraw, George Strait and Jason Aldean kept it classic in black whilst Justin Moore gave it his best JR in his massive white hat. Lee Brice of course bucked the cowboy trend, wearing his signature backward baseball cap on the red carpet.

Move over, Teddy; here comes Big Papi

Teddy Roosevelt once spoke at the State House, and he built the Panama Canal.

Dwight Eisenhower spoke there, too, and he led the invasion of Nazi-controlled Europe during World War II.

And now, add David Ortiz to that list of greatness. Hes single-handedly torn apart the Yankees over the past decade. Hes led the Red Sox to three World Series titles. Hes recorded more big hits than Elvis and the Beatles, probably combined.

And that carries at least as much weight around here as building a silly old canal.

Thank you for having me here, Ortiz said to his fans, who packed the State House Plaza in Concord to hear him promote a new Red Sox-connected lottery. I love New Hampshire, and I promise I will be back.

Ortiz didnt say much more. Only Wally the Green Monster, who showed up to shake his huge green butt and throw plastic baseballs to the crowd, had fewer words.

This is unusual for Ortiz, who has been outspoken his entire career. From steroids, to his contract, to dropping the F-bomb at Fenway after the marathon bombings, nothing is off limits to Big Papi.

With apologies to Gov. Maggie Hassan, Wally and Papi were the two most recognizable figures on those famous steps, Wally with his ginormous green head, Ortiz with his million-dollar smile.

Ortiz spoke for two minutes, saying nothing of substance, then brushed past the news media after someone inquired about the recent selfie he took with President Obama.

No one cared, though. Big Papi came here, to the State House, the stage for many celebrities through the decades, and thats all that mattered.

Red Sox still winless at home as Brewers complete sweep

Throughout the winter and all spring, the Red Sox dodged talk about having a hangover from their World Series victory.

Yesterday, they staggered through a loss that had hangover written all over it.

Sloppy defense, weak at-bats and a mounting case of injuries third baseman Will Middlebrooks is on the disabled list now with a strained right calf wasted another strong start from Jon Lester as the 2-4 Red Sox lost their third in a row at Fenway Park to the Brewers, this time by a 4-0 score.

The Sox are winless at home this year and this three-game skid matches their longest from last year. Tonight against the visiting Texas Rangers, a fourth consecutive loss would spark a wave of references to last years squad.

I know there are a lot of comparisons to, Well, this is what you did last year; therefore this is what you have to do this year for this to happen, which I dont think anybody would draw up, What happened in 2012, therefore 2013 would happen. So we understand this is a brand-new season; it means anything can happen, said Daniel Nava. But if we lose four straight and then we win 12 straight, that could be a quote: You guys never lost four, but you won 12 in a row. Anything can happen.

Nava committed one of two errors by the Red Sox, misjudging a sinking line drive to right field by Milwaukees Mark Reynolds and allowing the ball to skip by him in the second inning. Jonathan Lucroy trotted home from third, but Khris Davis also scored all the way from first on Reynolds single plus Navas error for a 2-0 Brewers lead.

Davis had reached on the previous at-bat when neither Jonathan Herrera, a replacement for Middlebrooks at third base, nor Lester could decide what to do with a perfectly placed bunt.

In the eighth inning, catcher David Ross errant throw to second on a stolen base attempt sent Ryan Braun to third. Aramis Ramirez RBI single scored Braun with the second unearned run charged to Lester.

The effort is there, and obviously they dont want to not get any runs on the board, said Lester, who has allowed just one walk in his two starts this season and has a 2.51 ERA to go with his 0-2 record.

David Ortiz acknowledged that, perhaps, with some late travel Thursday from Baltimore, followed by Fridays ring ceremony and then some irregularly spaced start times, the Sox were left with their heads spinning and the Brewers most definitely were not.

Red carpet kinder to 'Thrones' stars than that Red Wedding

"Game of Thrones" has its dragons, giants and White Walkers that require special effects and prosthetics to transform into small-screen creatures, but often, it's the humans who have the most amazing metamorphoses with little more than a costume change and makeup.

Take the cast when they hit the red carpet in New York the show's fourth season premiere, for example. Wildlings turned into glamazons. A spider turned into a dashing gentleman. A simple giant of a man turned into a ... well, a snazzily dressed giant of a man.

Replace their elaborate costumes, and the cast are sometimes unrecognizable at first glance. See how different these "GoT" stars look from their small-screen characters, and what some had to say about their on-screen action this season.

Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth.

Gwendoline Christie, the actress behind the not-very-lady-like Brienne of Tarth, doesn't much look like her tough warrior maiden save for the height. As for what's in store for Lady Brienne this year, Christie told reporters, "As you can imagine, the idea of King's Landing is a war of words, it's a war of intellect, of treachery and secrets. And Brienne is a woman of action and physicality, and I would imagine it would be quite difficult to see her place in that environment."

Red Sox-Brewers Live: Milwaukee Outlasts Boston 7-6 In 11 Innings

Final, Brewers 7-6: Francisco Rodriguez sat the Red Sox down in order in the 11th inning.

Mike Napoli, Xander Bogaerts and Jonny Gomes couldnt get anything going against the Brewers closer. All three hitters struck out swinging.

Back-to-back doubles from Khris Davis and Logan Schafer off Burke Badenhop in the 11th inning were the difference in this one.

The Brewers racked up 19 hits in the 7-6 victory, including 13 against Clay Buchholz, who simply didnt have his best stuff. Buchholz gave up six runs on a career-high 13 hits over 4 1/3 innings in a disappointing season debut for the right-hander.

The Red Sox and Brewers will close out their three-game series Sunday afternoon. Jon Lester and Yovani Gallardo are scheduled to square off in a matine tilt scheduled for 1:35 p.m.

Mid 11th, Brewers 7-6: Burke Badenhop, who spent the 2013 season with Milwaukee, surrendered a run to his former teammates in the 11th inning.

Khris Davis dropped a flair just inside the right field line with one out. The ball kicked up into the stands for a ground rule double.

Logan Schafer followed with a well-placed double into the left-center field gap that allowed Davis to score the go-ahead run.

Badenhop struck out Mark Reynolds for the second out of the 11th inning, at which point John Farrell turned to lefty Andrew Miller to face the left-handed-hitting Scooter Gennett. Miller fired a wild pitch before striking out Gennett.

Mike Napoli, Xander Bogaerts and Jonny Gomes are due up for Boston in the bottom of the 11th. Theyll face Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez aka K-Rod.
