Hillsborough red carnation campaign heads to Anfield

A lollipop mans successful campaign to get people to wear red carnations in memory of those who died at Hillsborough is set to move from Aintree to Anfield.

Dave Hughes, 75, from Maghull, has been overwhelmed by the response to his Wear a Red Carnation Hillsborough Awareness Campaign, which won the backing of thousands of race-goers during the three-day Grand National Festival.

Now he wants as many people as possible to be sporting the flowers for this years Hillsborough memorial service at Anfield on Wednesday afternoon.

He says: The giving away of the red carnations was a huge success at Aintree. And personally, Ive had selfies, hugs, kisses and many handshakes from folk from all over the country people who know about Hillsborough and the struggles the families are having, and who wished us well with our campaign.

Hartleys Nurseries in Maghull have been involved with Dave's campaign since he launched it last year, while he was recently contacted by Lee Smith, who owns Ada-Lillys florists in Kirkby and whose wholesalers donated 10,000 carnations.

And Dave adds: Myself and Lee will be handing out carnations to families who are meeting at The Albert pub by the ground at lunchtime before they go on to the Kop, while Hartleys Nurseries have donated a box to give away.

Following Aintree and Anfield, Dave is planning one final carnation event, explaining: I am thinking of doing it at the 5K Run for the 96, which takes place this Sunday at Stanley Park. This for me will be the finale. The awareness campaign has achieved what it set out to do that is what many people are saying, not me. So there is no need for one next year.

Buckley: Why Red Sox home opener is always special

As always, youll be getting the baseball equivalent of the Macys Thanksgiving Day parade this afternoon at Fenway Park.

Speeches! Introductions! A first-pitch ceremony! A flyover!

Oh, and now that Major League Baseball and the Red Sox in particular are forging ahead with a campaign to grow the game inside the heads of the little ones, look for there to be a sort of Chuck E. Cheese element to todays Red Sox home opener against the visiting Washington Nationals.

And its all right and proper. The Red Sox always put out the good china for Opening Day, or, as we call it around here, Calling in Sick Day. (But only in the aftermath of the 1967 Impossible Dream season and not, as many would have you believe, since the beginning of time.) Fenway is indeed a special place on Opening Day, with the twin powers of anticipation and nostalgia crashing into each other like Fisk and Munson at home plate; as such, the urge to drop everything and head over to Kenmore Square is far more intoxicating than the beer youll quaff once you get there.

But if theres one thing weve always known about the Sox, its that the selling is easy when the product is good. And its been a case of so good, so good, so good so far with your 2015 Red Sox. By capturing the first two road series of the season, against the awful Philadelphia Phillies and the awfuller New York Yankees, the Sox will be sitting pretty atop the AL East when they trot out to the chalk lines in their crisp, new home whites.

You look at these Red Sox and you ... you ...

You wonder if perhaps Clay Buchholz was on to something when he issued Hes the Ace T-shirts to his comrades in the starting rotation (last nights horrific start against the Yankees notwithstanding).

You watch the fluidity with which Dustin Pedroia is moving around and conclude that, yes, hes back.

You determine that the 2015 scouting report on Brock Holt is the same as the 2014 scouting report on Brock Holt: can come off the bench and play anywhere, and swing the bat like Ty Cobb.

You understand that Xander Bogaerts seems to have figured it out ... that Justin Masterson just might be the steal of the year ... that nobody will steal off Sandy Leon ... that Rusney Castillo is just a phone call away.

Terps Insider: 5 takeaways from Marylands Red-White spring game

Nearly six weeks after spring practicebegan in the sleet in early March, Marylands players took the next step toward the 2015 season with its annual Red-White spring game on Saturday at Byrd Stadium. Terrapins wide receiver Marcus Leak stole the show on a warm and cloudless afternoon, catching three first half touchdownsto lead Red to a 21-16 win.Heres a rundown of other story lines that unraveled:

1. Both Shane Cockerille and Perry Hills were largely inconsistent on Saturday, although Hills showed flashes in the first half. He made a number of crisp throws to Leak, who finished with six catches for 132 yards and three touchdowns, as well asDeAndre Lane (four catches, 63 yards). Cockerille, who took a majority of the first team snaps all spring, had just five completions on 20 attempts and was picked off once by junior Will Likely. He was also sacked four times.

The complexion of the position will change considerably come August, when senior Caleb Rowe returns from ACL rehabilitation. Rowe is expected to start next fall, although Hills said Saturday hell do everything in his power to win the job. You have to go in with the mindset that youre going to change it. If you dont, youre just going to lay back and let someone have the job that you want, said Hills.

2. Yannick Ngakoue had to answer questions earlier this spring about how he would adjust from being a hybrid outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme to more traditional defensive end in a 4-3 system, but he looked dominant Saturday. He was more explosive off the ball and gave left tackle Mike Minter problems all afternoon, hurrying first-team quarterback Cockerille often and recording three sacks. I like it a lot. I like putting my hand in the dirt and being explosive. Better than standing up, Ngakoue said.

3. Former Westlake star Antwaine Carter turned some heads from both his post at cornerback and one special teams on Saturday. On the second possession of the day, he read Hills eyes perfectly on an out-route and jumped it for an interception that ended a potential scoring drive. Later in the second quarter, he ran around the edge to block a field goal then opened the second half with a tackle for loss after blowing up a bubble screen. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Carter has a long, athletic frame and had a solid spring after moving from safety to corner (he made an acrobatic interception in traffic during last Saturdays scrimmage) and if he continues to progress, could give Marylands secondary more depth in 2015. I was just out there having fun, Carter said. I understand our playbook and I came out and executed.

4.Aside from senior kicker Brad Craddock hitting a 50-yard field goal in the first half, Marylands kicking game was wildly inconsistent Saturday. Both Lee Shrader and Nicholas Pritchard struggled with the windy conditions in College Park (each kicked six times and had a combined three punts that landed inside the 20-yard line). Maryland also had a field goal blocked and another botched extra point late in the second half.

Edsall noted that 2015 signee Nick Rubinowicz would compete for the starting punting role when he arrives this summer, but ultimately the team needs more consistent production at the position. I didnt think that those guys got the ball turned over enough when we were kicking with the wind, Edsall said of Shrader and Pritchard. Again, well have another young man, Nick [Rubinowicz] coming in and competing. Again, all those things will be decided. Im happy with spring in terms of how it went and what we were able to get accomplished.

5. Senior running back Brandon Ross, who finished with 102 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, said Saturday he could feel the offensive line making strides as a physical unit that is accomplishing more push up front. Maryland has had a number of injuries on the front, including tackles Michael Dunn (back) and Derwin Gray (labrum), but it also had a number of players who put forth productive spring performances including seniors Ryan Doyle and Evan Mulrooney, as well as redshirt freshmen Damian Prince and Brendan Moore. Both the Red and White teams ran the ball well Saturday (Albert Reid led Red with 73 yards on 16 carries, While Jacquille Veii backed up Ross and had 45 yards on 10 carries.

Gray had successful surgery on Friday and is expected to be back in the fold by August. Edsall said no other players were injured during Saturdays scrimmage.

Roman Stubbs covers the University of Maryland athletics for The Washington Post.

The Blacklist: Not How the Truth Works

[This is a review of The Blacklist season 2, episode 18. There will be SPOILERS.]

-

How many times have Liz and Red begun a conversation only to have it end with him revealing some small kernel of truth and then, instead of letting him explain, Liz walks away, saying something to the effect that theyre done, or their relationship is strictly business? And how many times has The Blacklist brought them back together after a few episodes, when Liz learns that Red did what he did for a good (if not misguided) reason, and soon the two are best buddies again (buying and selling apartments to reduce the debt of guilt hanging over both their heads)?

The end of Vanessa Cruz offers the audience a few weeks worth of Liz-Red enmity in the span of a few seconds, after Liz delivers the Fulcrum, and Red delivers the news that he hired Tom (sure, its Jacob, but I guess were sticking with Tom? He looks like a Tom) to enter her life. What would have been the start of some serious cold-shouldering by Liz was cut short by an assassins bullet that struck Red down, leaving the episode on sort of a weak cliffhanger, since we know Reds not going to die. Someone puts a bullet in Captain Useless (a.k.a. Donald Ressler) or Aram Mojtabai and there might be some intrigue based on how expendable those characters are.

Still, there are plenty of questions to be had in the wake of Reds shooting. Questions like: who was the shooter, and did Liz and Dembe actually see him/her, or were they just blindly lashing out, spraying bullets into a populated area? Theres also the question of why was Red shot? Did it have to do with the tricky backchannel power play he attempted with regard to the syndicate? Or was it because the Fulcrum was finally in his hands (or Dembes, more accurately)? It stands to reason those two factors had something to do with it. After all, everyone wants the Fulcrum. So, it could have been an order sent down by Jasper, or by the Director (or, more likely, both). Or, knowing how this show likes to operate, it could have been someone totally random. Some Romanian expat with whom Red once spent a few weeks in Crete a few weeks that got very messy, Red would probably say with a hearty laugh.

For what its worth, the episode does make a valiant effort to be about more than Red getting shot, or getting his hands on the Fulcrum. It even attempts to be more than Tom sticking around, talking to Liz about his plans to buy a boat and open up a charter business, even though he doesnt know how to swim. It even tries to pretend that stilted line about learning how to swim wasnt the worst bit of dialogue the show had chewed up and spit out in a long time.

But thats the main problem with Vanessa Cruz: for all its mildly engaging procedural antics about a woman framing rich businessmen (in what appears to be a never ending revenge scheme), it is so obviously trying not to be about Red and Liz that the seams are showing in virtually ever scene that doesnt feature them. The episode even includes a scene wherein the titular Cruz has a skeevy businessman in a leather fetish mask on a hotel bed. And while that sort of scenario is well within The Blacklists particular puerile wheelhouse, its so disconnected from everything else thats going on, it feels like another show. At one point, Ressler is digging through Cruzs meticulously organized treasure trove of physical evidence that she uses to ruin said businessmen, and it took a minute to remember what the hell he was doing there.

Vote! Mad Men's Leading Ladies: Who Has the Best Red Carpet Style?

Mad Men's final season signifies the end of a style era on TV (and, full disclosure, we're a little heartbrokenalthough super-excited for the April 5 premiere).

Luckily, we'll always have the leading ladies' red carpet fashion. January Jones, Christina Hendricks, Jessica Par, Elisabeth Moss and Kiernan Shipka not only transported our imaginations with their on-screen styletheir awards show, premiere and event looks also stole the proverbial show.

Which is exactly why we're giving homage through a red carpet retrospective: First, we've narrowed our favorite looks from each of the five ladies. Next, we want to know which of these Mad Men mavens' red carpet style is your favorite! Read on for our picks and vote below:

READ: Mad Men's costume designer reveals her top five favorite show looks

The Risk Taker: January Jones is no shrinking violetthe star is known to step out on the red carpet in looks that will turn heads (or drop jaws, even). Some of Jones' best red carpet moments have been her most memorable: We're talking the textured, electric blue Atelier Versace frock that she wore to 2013 Emmys; the TopShop mini that even Beyonc had to get her hands on; the race car yellow Atelier Versace gown she donned at the 2012 Met Gala; a sexy Schumacher shorts and coat look worn to a Lucky Fabb event; her vampy red Versace frock with floor-length fringe, which she wore to the 2011 Golden Globes; and the ornate black-and-gold Carolina Herrera gown that she sported to the SAG Awards in 2011.

The Print Maven: Jessica Par goes for classic silhouettes (all the better to frame her statuesque figure with) and punchy prints on the red carpet. Some of our favorite looks on the star include the high-slit Thakoon gown she wore to a 2014 pre-Emmys event; the black tea-length Lanvin frock she donned at the 2014 Emmys; the slinky, pink Calvin Klein dress we spotted her in at Elle's 20th Annual Women In Hollywood bash; the gorgeous Roksanda Ilincic number she wore to a 2014 PaleyFest event; and the dramatic white-and-black Michael Kors gown with a graphic design that she wore to the 2014 Met Gala.

NEWS: January Jones goes topless & proves she's a beauty chameleon for Violet Grey

The Timeless Beauty: Christina Hendricks is widely considered to be someone who doles up a healthy serving of va-va-voom on the red carpet, but we're impressed by more than just her bombshell figure. The actress frequently wears statement frocks in rich jewel or pastel hues, like the creamy Johanna Johnson confection she sported at the 2011 Emmys; the red, bow-topped Carolina Herrera gown she wore to the 2010 SAG Awards; the green off-the-shoulder Zac Posen midi that she wore to the 2014 CNN Heroes: An All Star Tribute; her unforgettable lilac 2010 Emmys dress by Zac Posen; her iridescent, tea-length Vivienne Westwood Couture frock in an eye-catching mulberry hue; and the frill-embellished Christian Siriano dress from her appearance at the Golden Globes in 2010.

The New Classic: Elisabeth Moss is a master of wearing black, red and white (one of our favorite red carpet palettes, natch). Her style wins include the belted red Michael Kors gown that she wore to the 2014 SAG Awards; the sexy Georges Hobeika jumpsuit with sheer illusion panels she sported to a 2014 pre-Golden Globes event; the one-shoulder Donna Karan gown she donned at the 2010 Emmys; the monochrome Andrew Gn frock that wowed us at the 2013 Emmys; the Houghton dress with a sexy, mostly-sheer bodice that she wore to the 2014 Vanity Fair post-Oscars bash; and a Stella McCartney frock with a built-in hourglass silhouette, which she wore to a 2013 pre-Emmys event.

Red Army

At the Myrna Loy

Grade: A

Our independent movie house was founded upon the legacy of local legends like Myrna Loy and Gary Cooper.

How fitting, then, that the Myrna Loy Center would showcase Red Army, a critically acclaimed documentary, executive-produced by one of Helenas own, Liam Satre-Meloy. Satre-Meloy will be present at both screenings of Red Army today, with Q&A sessions after both screenings. The Myrna will also host an opening-night reception.

Red Army is the latest proof that trees with Helena roots can grow plenty tall.

Most of us who were sports fans in the 1970s and 1980s know the myth of the Soviet Unions legendary hockey team, The Red Army.

The Red Army team was a puzzling contradiction.

On the one hand, the players skated with the elegance of Russian ballerinas -- weaving and passing with artistic finesse.

On the other hand, the Red Army team was trained in a system reminiscent of the Soviet Gulag camps.

Marion Cotillard has wowed us again. (Seriously, she never ceases to amaze!)

Whether she's turning heads on the red carpet or leaping full-length pools in a single bound for artsy Dior music videos, the star just, well, knows how to impress. Her style is both modern and timeless, which comes through whether she's modeling for Dior or hitting the red carpet in the brand's latest couture confections.

In these new ads (which were shot by famed photographer Peter Lindbergh), Marion models the brand's new Lady Dior bag in a futuristic backdropshowcasing a chic, structured design that features kitschy Dior hardware on the handle.

WATCH: Marion gets musical for Dior commercial

Another shot shows the actress getting up close and personal with the glass in a telephone booth (that seems to be very steamy, we might add).

In more exciting news for Marion, WWD reports that the star is partnering with Chopard on a collection of sustainable jewelry, which will be the first of its kind for the luxury jewelry brand. Since becoming a brand ambassador, Marion's been particularly faithful to Dior on the red carpetsomething tells us we'll be seeing those "green" baubles on the carpet soon, too.

Lehigh Valley Hospital surgical resident charged as alleged Muhlenberg College exposer

More than a month ago, Muhlenberg College police got the heads-up to be on the lookout for a shiny red car with a Maryland license plate.

The car's driver allegedly exposed himself to a student at nearby Cedar Crest College in late February, and officials there shared the information with Muhlenberg officers.

Two weeks ago, a Muhlenberg student told campus police that a man driving a red car followed her, called her over and exposed himself.

A shiny red car was spotted two more times at Muhlenberg after that, near the center of campus in the late afternoon when lots of students walk about, police said.

The last sighting of the car happened late Monday afternoon when a man exposed himself to a female student on a private driveway through student housing near the Harry C. Trexler Library on Chew Street, police said.

This time the student took down a license plate, police said, and a day later that led to the arrest of the suspect: a Lehigh Valley Hospital surgical resident who recently graduated from medical school.

Allentown police charged Jeffrey A. Zapora, 28, a member of the honors society at the University of Maryland Medical School and a first-year resident in plastic surgery at Lehigh Valley Health Network, with indecent exposure in two incidents at Muhlenberg. They said he might face additional charges as the investigation continues.

Zapora, who was sent to Lehigh County Jail under $5,000 bail but later posted bail, was suspended by the hospital pending further investigation, according to hospital spokesman Brian Downs.

University officials said only that Zapora attended the School of Medicine from 2010-14.

According to a criminal complaint:

Red Sox send Rusney Castillo, Jackie Bradley Jr. to Triple-A

Neither move is a surprise, really, but theyre still interesting: Boston has sent last years Opening Day center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and this offseasons $72.5 million Cuban signing Rusney Castillo to Triple-A

Outfield depth is a huge strength for the Red Sox, wholl go with Hanley Ramirez in left field, Mookie Betts in center field, and Shane Victorino in right field, with Allen Craig and Daniel Nava on the bench.

Obviously something has to give there at some point, because Castillo is a high-upside prospect and the Red Sox didnt give him $72.5 million to sit at Triple-A for long and Bradley still has upside despite flopping as a rookie. Moving on from the 34-year-old Victorino would seem to be the most likely way to clear a spot in a month or two, but in the meantime hes getting a chance to show hes got some gas left in the tank.

Typhoon Maysak heads for Philippines

Story highlights Maysak has sustained winds of more than 130 mph but is expected to weaken It's forecast to hit the Philippines during the Easter weekend

Maysak is moving west-northwest after skirting the Federated States of Micronesia, according to the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Its eye is projected to make landfall in the central or northern part of the Philippine island of Luzon on Sunday, though the country's residents could start feeling its effects days before.

That could interrupt the Easter celebration for many in the predominantly Catholic nation, which may be socked by heavy rains and potent winds. The International Red Cross noted that "many people are expected to throng coastal areas at this time."

Images of the typhoon as seen from the International Space Station were posted to Twitter, including a Vine video showing the swirling eye of the storm.

The storm has weakened and is expected to lose more strength before it reaches the Philippines. Its maximum sustained winds on Wednesday were 150 mph, making it a super typhoon in the Joint Typhoon Warning Center's definition.

But by Thursday, the winds' strength had declined to around 132 mph -- no longer a super typhoon but still the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane.

Meteorologist Ivan Cabrera told CNN that Maysak could weaken further to become a tropical storm by the time it reaches the Philippine coast.

"This will not be a catastrophic storm," Cabrera said. That said, it could still cause flooding and bring strong winds, he cautioned.

The Philippines is frequently hit by typhoons. In December, for instance, Hagupit killed at least 18 people in the East Asian nation and injured hundreds more.

But that devastation paled in comparison to the havoc wrought by Super Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013, which killed more than 6,000 people and injured more than 27,000 others. That typhoon, considered to be among the strongest storms ever to make landfall, hit the eastern city of Tacloban especially hard.
