They are rampant in Game of Thrones (even without Ed Sheeran), though Ed and the likes of other famous red-haired men like Prince Harry and Michael Fassbender have their part to play in making ginger hair hot again. The colouring is seriously in demand, with sperm donation companies putting out the call for more ginger DNA.

Back in 2011, red hair was such an undesired baby trait that one of the world's biggest sperm banks, Cryos International, stopped accepting donations from redheads, but now it's a very different story. Companies like Co-ParentMatch.com are calling out for donations from flame-haired men to stop the colouring dying out. And we're with them. It's not just the famous red-headed men that are draw cards for people wanting ginger bubs, but the women too. Isla Fischer, Emma Stone, Sophie Turner, Julianne Moore and Amy Adams are just some of the flame-haired screen sirens ruling Hollywood. We're all in.

Why are there still no redhead emojis? Because they take longer to make than you might think – ABC Online

Updated July 18, 2017 13:43:11

Apple has marked World Emoji Day by dropping the list of new characters it will include in its iOS 11 update later this year.

But a certain 2 per cent of the population aren't celebrating.

Why? Because while we'll get zombies, dinosaurs, people doing yoga, a woman wearing a headscarf, a man with a beard, a breastfeeding mother and a "mind blown" expression (and much more) on our phones this spring, there are still no official plans for red-haired emojis.

Redheads have been calling for their own characters since 2015, when Apple expanded its keyboard to include a larger variety of races and genders.

So why is it taking so long? It's just a matter of giving some emojis a makeover right?

Well, no. It turns out the process is much more complex than you might think.

Let's take a look:

There is no one organisation responsible for "making" emojis.

Instead, members of the public pitch ideas for new characters to the Unicode Consortium (UC), a panel made up mostly of representatives from some of the world's biggest tech companies, including: Apple, Microsoft, IBM, Facebook, Google, Huawei, and Netflix.

If approved, tech companies are then responsible for designing their own characters.

If you had a good idea for a emoji, first you would have to write a proposal.

The UC provides a step-by-step guide for how to do that, but it's basically a letter in which you have to include:

Once that's done, you would then need to submit it to the UC, where it is referred to the Emoji Subcommittee.

The subcommittee is co-chaired by Mark Davis from Google and Peter Edberg from Apple.

If your pitch ticks all the boxes, it's then referred back to the UC and put to a vote.

Once approved, it then needs to be developed by each tech company.

Ever wondered why Apple emojis look different to Google emojis?

Because during development, each company is able to get creative and design their own unique version of the character.

And then it's up to each company when they want to roll them out.

According to Unicode, it takes about a year from start to finish, and that's why redhead emojis are yet to grace our screens.

Despite over two years of calls for the characters, they were only officially pitched to Unicode in April.

That means sorry friends, you'll be waiting until at least early 2018.

What if women ran the world? – TVO

In this edited excerpt from her new book, Attack of the 50 Ft.Women: How Gender Equality Can Save the World!, Womens Equality Party co-founder Catherine Mayer explains why parties of the left are so poor at promoting women.

When Theresa May came to power, the American publication Money got a little overexcited. "Even with all the uncertainty around the U.K.s post-Brexit future, one thing is clear: Britain will soon be led by a woman, its first female prime minister since Margaret Thatcher left office in 1990,"it declared. "Female heads of state have become common everywhere, it seems, but in the United States."

In reality, May added to a total of female world leaders that for all their stature could still fit into a minibus. Excluding hereditary heads of state, there are female leaders in just 15 out of the worlds 144 full or partial democracies, or 16 if we include Nicola Sturgeon who heads Scotlands devolved government.

Female leaders are less common globally than natural redheads are in Sturgeons own country; and redheads in Scotland, contrary to popular imagination, are not common at all, a flame-haired cohort amounting to around 13 per cent of the total population. Redheads and female leaders stand out, so we imagine their numbers to be much higher. Fifty-three democracies elect a president and a prime minister, and in all but nine of these nations, both roles are held by men. That means female leaders still comprise just 7.61 per cent of all world leaders, 8.12 per cent with Sturgeon.

Heres another eye-catching feature of world politics: many female leaders and all current female leaders in Europe come from the right. Even though female voters are more likely than men to vote for left-of-centre parties, left-of-centre parties are strangely bad at promoting women. Labour has never elected a female leader. Sweden with its recently much lauded feminist government has never elected a female leader.

One paradoxical explanation for this phenomenon is that parties of the left have historically championed gender equality. This means they are often too convinced of their own virtue to recognize their failings. Those failings loosely group into two categories. The first is one of precedence. In their desire to solve all structural inequalities, these parties too-often assign the lowest priority to gender inequality even though most other forms of disadvantage intersect with being female. Far-left activists go further, resisting the idea of fixing parts of the system in favour of changing the whole system, stranding women in an endless waiting game. They also mistake optics for action. Bolivias socialist government set up a Gender Office and Unit for Depatriarchalisation and created a Deputy Minister for Equal Opportunities within the Ministry of Justice and Fundamental Rights, responsible for the advancement of women. However, none of these new institutions was allocated the resources necessary to be effective. As the White Queen tells Alice, "The rule is jam tomorrow and jam yesterday but never jam today."

The second category is a failing more overt in parties of the right: hostility towards women. The left likes to imagine that it is exempt from such wrongheadedness. In reality, misogyny flourishes like knotweed, undermining foundations of parity and respect and periodically breaking into the open, rampant and destructive. The online abuse directed against any female MPs who questioned Jeremy Corbyns leadership of the U.K.was different in degree and content to anything experienced by male dissidents and could have less easily survived in a culture that made continued and concerted efforts to stamp out such abuse.

Last July, 44 female Labour MPs wrote to Corbyn concerned about the worrying trend of escalating hostility including rape threats, death threats, smashed cars and bricks through windows."

The authors made clear that they were not blaming factions within Labour for all of this but they also pointed to instances where Corbyns backers had staged rallies against them and claimed that bullying at party meetings had been actively encouraged or quietly condoned.

Bernie Sanders campaign for the Democratic Presidential nomination unleashed toxic attacks on Hillary Clinton, not by Sanders but a rump of his followers, so-called Bernie Bros. Two British hard-left parties, the Workers Revolutionary Party and the Socialist Workers Party, both failed to curb sexual violence in their own ranks. The WRP disbanded after revelations that its leader Gerry Healy had sexually abused female members. The SWP responded to a rape allegation against a senior figure in the organization by holding a kangaroo court that interrogated the complainant. Had she been drunk? Had she definitely said no?

George Galloway, a former MP who set up the Respect Party after his expulsion from Labour, dismissed rape charges brought in Sweden against Julian Assange. The WikiLeaks founder was guilty, said Galloway, of "personal sexual behaviour [that] is sordid, disgusting, and I condemn it."This was, however, merely "bad sexual etiquette.""Not everybody needs to be asked prior to each insertion,"Galloway added. In 2016, he campaigned to be Mayor of London. The Womens Equality Party fielded a mayoral candidate at the same elections, party leader Sophie Walker, together with a London-wide slate of candidates. Galloway started with an advantage as a public figure, a political veteran and one-time star of reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother; he had also presented shows for Iran-backed Press TV and the Russian-funded RT network. Sophie had come to politics as WEs first leader just ten months before election day. She outpolled him by almost 100,000 votes.

Women from across the political spectrum, including members of other parties, congratulated us on the result. Not all of them warm to the Womens Equality Party or understand that we aim not to weaken their parties but to improve them, by pushing those parties to take gender equality and the women in their ranks seriously. But every woman in politics knows that a system that sidelines women, and tolerates their abuse, can never serve the population as it should.

Opinion: Red heads need to harden up – NEWS.com.au (blog)

James McCann is a red head who is sick of other red heads whingeing. Picture: Roy VanDerVegt

ABOUT a decade ago, ginger jokes were everywhere.

South Park went viral with an episode joking that Gingers dont have souls. Summer Heights High popularised the term Ranga, which quickly became the years most shouted word from passing Nissan Pulsars. By 2010, gags about red heads were so overused that several reviewers at the Raw Comedy national final asked comedians to move on to other, less hackneyed subjects.

It was open season.

This cultural phenomenon coincided with my tender high school years. Besides having flaming red hair, I was tubby, short and wore both braces and glasses.

I backed up the look with extra-curricular activities like chess, debating, badminton and clarinet lessons.

I signed up for school musicals, hoping they might reverse my fortunes and entice some much desired female attention. I was mistaken, and accidentally magnified the already widespread, equally mistaken notion that James McCann was a homosexual.

And yet, funnily enough, I cannot remember ever being bullied for any of these immensely bully-able traits. I do, however, remember being called ranga on a daily basis for many years. There were several other, more creative names McCandle Stick stands out as a particularly good one.

A cute little James McCann.Source:Supplied

Most invectives throughout high school aimed below the belt Fanta Pants, Fire Crotch, and Ginger Pubes which was odd considering my very late puberty, and the then total lack of any such growth. At 15, as the oldest male soprano ever in the school choir, I would have welcomed a few pubes in any hue.

The constant ranga jeers werent especially pleasant but, then again, who has a wholly happy time at school? In the awkward years of adolescence, when the brain rewires and hormones wreak havoc, everybody feels isolated and misunderstood.

Some respond by lashing out, with the worst abusers often themselves being the worst abused. Others retreat into their rooms, listen to The Smiths, and write songs about their especial sadness.

Eventually most people grow up, get some perspective, and move on with their lives.

In recent years, however, something has gone wrong on a generational scale. Victimhood is in vogue, and redheads are trying to cash in along with everybody else.

R.A. N. G. A, the Red And Nearly Ginger Association, is an Australian group who want to own the word Ranga. Its about holding it up in the light of positive endorsement, says ginger-haired founder Joel Cohen in a Ted X talk. Its about taking the power back. This is bizarre stuff. Its the same way GLAAD talk about the word queer, or the way the NAACP talk about that word white folks arent allowed to say.

It should go without saying, but red-headed people have not historically faced the same systematic difficulties as people who are black and/or gay. Nobody has ever been locked out of the job market, or suffered an unjust legal system, or been specifically targeted by the police, solely on the basis of having red hair.

Ours is not a comparable struggle. Sure, the disproportionately ginger Irish have had a hard lot, but that wasnt the reason they were persecuted by the extremely ginger Queen Elizabeth I.

Some red heads are so desperate to make themselves into victims that they invent non-existent problems. British photographer Thomas Knights has released two Red Hot collections of photographs in an attempt to prove that red-headed men can be sexy. Is this really a point anybody needs to prove? Prince Harry (ginger) is routinely voted the sexiest royal. Despite a receding hairline, crap tattoos and naff songs, Ed Sheeran (carrot top) is worshipped by legions of lustful fans.

Nobody feels sorry for this read headed hunk-a-spunk. Picture: Paul Ellis / Getty ImagesSource:Getty Images

In the last few years, oodles of ginger pride events have sprung up all over the world. In Australia, over a thousand red-headed Australians recently turned up to the second annual Ginger Pride Rally.

Holding up signs that read NOBODY PUTS GINGER IN THE CORNER and GINGERS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN, the pale-faced protesters took to the shady streets of Melbourne in solidarity. The event is sponsored and organised by Buderim Ginger, whove found a clever way to advertise their product, and capitalise on the grievance industry.

Going on and on about your hair colour isnt just dull, its counter-productive. Bullies want a reaction, and the gingers are giving it to them.

Moreover, the notion of Ginger Pride is ridiculous. It makes just as little sense to base your identity on hair or skin colour as it does to attack somebody else for theirs. Nobody should be proud to have red hair, any more than theyre proud to be left-handed, or have a partiality to the colour blue. A predisposition to freckles and skin cancer is nothing to be proud of.

That said, I will note that some of the greatest warriors throughout history have had crimson hair: Achilles was like fire, King David was ruddy, and the Norse God Thor, prior to his bastardisation in Marvel Comics, was portrayed as a bearded ginger.

The greatest British war time leaders have all had red hair: Richard the Lionheart, Oliver Cromwell, Boudicca and a young Winston Churchill too. Perhaps my fellow gingers should learn from their genetic predecessors and harden up.

James McCann is a writer and comedian. Find him at jamesdonaldforbesmccann.com or follow him on Twitter @jdfmccann.

Melbournes CBD was flooded by the flame-haired on Saturday, April 29, as hundreds took part in the second annual Ginger Pride Rally. The anti-bullying event drew 1000 people, according to the ABC, including the charity group Alannah and Madeline Foundation, which raises money to protect children from violence. It was the second time the event was held, with organisers providing free ginger beer, ginger speed dating and games of Ginger Beer Pong. Credit: Facebook/Alannah & Madeline Foundation via Storyful

Kendall and Kris Jenner Try on Kathy Griffin’s Wigs – People – PEOPLE.com

Wigsare a highly underrated secret of the celebrity world. Want a pixie cut without all the drama of a major, permanent chop? No problem. Dream of dyeing your hair a pristine shade of neon green one day and the lightest shade of rose the next? Youll never have to worry about severe follicle damage, fading, or that harsh grow out ever again. Or maybe you just want to try out life as a blonde, or a redhead. You wouldnt be the firstKathy GriffinInstagrammed two intruders rifling through her personal collection of wigsand they just so happened to be namedKendall and Kris Jenner.

While a friendship between the comedian and the first family of reality TV may seem unlikely, the E! celebrities are closer than you might thinkliterally. Last year, Griffin revealed that she doesnt just live close to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, she lives right next door. In an exclusive interview with People, she said, [Kris] has already come over twice. One time she came over, and she opened the window and started yelling at Kim and Kanye and I said, Stop it! You are not getting me kicked out! because when I say theyre next door, I mean 15 ft, I dont mean nearby.

So like a good neighbor, the television host appears to have an open door policy with the KarJenners, which means they also occasionally have the opportunity to go snooping through her property while shes out of the house. And clearly, the Jenners are not about to pass up the chance at a good spy mission, getting into Kathys collection of wigs while she was gone and trying a couple on in a selfie they sent to the comedian. As she wrote in her Instagram post, BREAKING These 2 @kendalljenner @krisjenner characters somehow snuck in to my home and tried on my magic hair. Ginger envy!!! While it may be the case that the mother-daughter duo were simply jealous of their neighbors auburn locks, it could also be that these ladies were sick of Kylie being the only one with a technicolor wig closet at her disposal.

Do you think Kris and Kendall look good as redheads? Would you want to borrow one of Kathys wigs? Sound off below!

There’s a Strange Reason Why ‘Gen-X’ Author Douglas Coupland Put a Giant van Gogh Head in a Vineyard – artnet News

Following a worldwide search for a Vincent van Gogh doppelgnger, Canadian author-turned-artist Douglas Coupland has unveiled a giant bust of the Dutch artist that he created with the help of 3D scanning at a Canadian vineyard.

Coupland was commissioned by Anthony von Mandl, owner of Martins Lane Vineyard in Kelowna, to create the work, the first in a series titled Redheads that apparently looks to connect thefact that both Pinot Noir grapes and red hair are the results of genetic mutations. To wit, the grapes are the result of natural mutations in Burgundys vineyards over centuries, whilered hair is a fluke in human genetics. Both represent only2 percent of their respective populations, according to Coupland.

This genetic magic in both redheads and Pinot Noir grapes is a microcosm of the way in which all life on earth evolves with time, writes Coupland.

The likeness of van Gogh furtherif somewhat gruesomelyextends to the fact that the bronze bust is sans one ear, though a statement from the winery says the sideways positioning of the sculpture suggests listening to the ground to hear the grapes growing. A quizzical viewer might note that while van Goghs red hair is the ostensible heartof the overall concept, the sculpture is in fact entirely grey.

Douglas Coupland with vineyard owner Anthony van Mandl. Courtesy Martins Lane Winery

Couplandismost famous for his 1991 debut novel Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, which sparked the monikernow cemented forever in popular culture. He began making art in 2000 and has had numerous public artworks on display around the globe.

This past fall, Daniel Baker, an actor from Dorset, England, won Couplands van Gogh lookalike competition. At the time, Coupland wrote on the competitions website: Id spent months looking at van Gogh lookalikes on a computer screen, and then suddenly there was this man, this Vincent van Gogh, hopping out of a Vancouver taxi, looking like hed just stepped out of the year 1889.

Baker was selected out of1,250 entries from 37 countries, following a popular vote open to the public that drew 500,000 submissions. The prize included a5,000 award.

Bakers head was 3D-scanned usinghundreds of cameras to generate multidimensional facial data. The data was then used to create a likeness of van Goghs head.

Though this is the first commissioned work in a planned series, there is no word yet on what other artists the winery plans to work with. Asked why the winery started with van Gogh, a spokesman told artnet News: Simply put, Vincent van Gogh is probably the most famous redhead that ever lived.

Red Bull heads to Austria bidding to improve home race form – Yahoo Sports

Red Bull Formula 1 drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen will head to next weekends Austrian Grand Prix bidding to improve their teams home race form, having scored just one podium over the past three years in Spielberg.

Austria returned to the F1 calendar in 2014 after an 11-year absence, but the past three races at the Red Bull Ring have been difficult ones for the home team.

Max Verstappen finished second last year after the late clash between Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, outstripping Red Bulls previous best finish of eighth in Austria from 2014.

After claiming its first victory of the season last time out in Baku, Red Bull now returns home with its sights set on impressing at one of its most important races of the year.

I had a really good result in Austria last year coming second, Verstappen said. Before the race it was a bit unknown how the tires would play out so I just tried to feel my way in and keep life in them.

This allowed me to complete a one-stop strategy, which was always going to be a gamble, but in the end worked out really well.

This year we have to make sure the car is working well in the corners in order to be up with the front-runners and then just try and be as competitive as possible on the straights, its always a bit of a compromise.

The fans at the Red Bull Ring are always extremely passionate and of course there was a big Dutch turn out last year which is always special for me to see, plenty of caravans and orange around the area.

At any kind of power circuit like Austria you want to be smooth and get good exits in order to give yourself the best chance on the long straights, added Baku winner Ricciardo.

The compromise is always the aero package. In the middle to the end of the lap you want more downforce because the corners are quite fast but more downforce means you are slower on the straights, so the key is to find a good balance throughout the lap.

I really enjoy the track and the only downside is that I wish it was a bit longer. I wish it had a few more corners, but the corners that do exist are great fun.

Back in May, Ricciardo and Verstappen completed a fun caravan race at the Red Bull Ring in promotion of the race, causing havoc in the process.

We have done some pretty crazy things at the track, wearing the lederhosen race suit is something different and a few weeks ago Max and I raced caravans there, Ricciardo said.

To be honest Im not sure they would have let us do that anywhere else as the caravans were destroyed, but we loved it!

Williams Martini Racing has announced that a new documentary profiling the story of the Formula 1 team will be released this summer.

Based on Lady Virginia Williams 1991 bookA Different Kind of Life, the film entitledWilliams will depict the true story of the team, led byBAFTA-winning director Morgan Matthews.

As per a release from the team: The film features legendary racing footage, interviews with much-loved Formula One stars including Sir Patrick Head, Sir Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet and candid never-before-seen accounts of what really went on behind closed doors.

It is an honest, authentic and incredibly revealing portrait of one of the most extraordinary stories in motorsport.

I hope the fans enjoy the film as much as Ive enjoyed being part of motor racing, team founder and owner Sir Frank Williams said.

Im glad that both the people behind the team and my family come out as the true heroes of the story.

Deputy team principal Claire Williams added: This film is a tale of two great loves in my fathers life. Everyone knows of Franks pure passion for motor racing, but not everyone knows the remarkable story of my parents marriage and how those two things co-existed during the highs and lows of the teams journey.

I am pleased that it shines a light on exactly how instrumental my mother was in the teams success while also capturing the setbacks and her bravery in holding the family, and ultimately the business together, as the team went on to make history.

We are incredibly proud of the film and its enduring message of what the human spirit is capable of achieving in the face adversity. I hope that is inspires people as much as my parents story inspires me.

As my dad would want it though, we are proud of our past but ready for the future. The most exciting part is our plan to build on Franks legacy and write a new chapter in the Williams story something we are building momentum towards.

Williams will premiere in London, England on July 11 before going on general release in the UK in August.

Jolyon Palmer wants to end his run of bad luck in Formula 1 and begin to build momentum in next weekends Austrian Grand Prix to carry through to the sports summer break.

Palmer has endured a point-less start to the season with Renault, with his sole top-10 finish in F1 coming in last years Malaysian Grand Prix.

Speculation has been rife about the Britons future at Enstone amid suggestions he could be replaced mid-season, with a difficult weekend in Azerbaijan last time out not aiding matters.

Palmer suffered problems in his car on all three days of the race weekend, preventing him from taking part in qualifying or finishing the race.

There isnt a lot to say from my weekend, but it was a crazy race to watch! Palmer said of Baku.

I enjoyed watching it, but I wish I was in it, I think there were some points up for grabs for us.

We will make sure we have a better one in Austria, the target is always the same: to bring home some points.

Palmer is treating the Austria weekend as a catalyst to kick-start his season, having previously enjoyed strong outings at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

We started on the penultimate row last year but I managed to work my way up to 12th, beating my teammate. I was quite happy with the race, we just needed a little bit of extra luck and I think we could have been in the points, Palmer said.

It is a circuit I enjoy having raced there in GP2 in 2014 and then a Free Practice session in 2015. It was definitely one of my strongest races of last season, so it is important to build on the knowledge we have and my confidence at the track and work towards a positive result.

We need to change our luck. I hope we can make it all stick heading into the final few rounds before the summer break beginning here.

Former FIA president Max Mosley believes that Sebastian Vettels behavior in his clash with Lewis Hamilton during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was intolerable, adding that the German should have been excluded from the race as a result of the incident.

Vettel and Hamilton came to blows behind the safety car in Baku, with the Ferrari driver making a sideways swipe after believing he was brake-tested.

Vettel received an in-race stop/go penalty for making contact with Hamilton, but the matter will be re-examined by the FIA on Monday to see if further action is warranted.

Speaking toSky Sports, Mosley, who helped run F1 as FIA president between 1993 and 2009, made his feelings on Vettels move clear, believing he should have been punished much more harshly at the time.

I will certainly not make friends with Ferrari but fact is fact: my recommendation would have been to take Vettel out of the race and bring the whole matter to the World Council to negotiate, Mosley said.

From my point of view, it is intolerable that you behave as Vettel has done.

If he did that on the road he would lose his license.

The incident helped stoke the rivalry between championship rivals Vettel and Hamilton, who are currently separated by 14 points at the top of the drivers standings.

Should Vettel be excluded from Azerbaijan and the drivers finishing below him move up a position, the pair would be tied on points with 12 races remaining this season.

Formula E/LAT

Pipo Derani and Filipe Albuquerque are among the drivers substituting for Formula E regulars in the FIA World Endurance Championship round at the Nrburgring next month, as confirmed with the publication of the entry list for the latter event.

The clash between Formula E and WEC on the July 16 weekend has been a long-running saga for both series, with no resolution workable due to a lack of communication regarding the placement of the Formula 1 race in Germany that was ultimately canceled.

With drivers racing in both series, a number were left with a key dilemma to make when picking which race to entry, ending with a majority opting to partake in Formula Es double-header race weekend in New York.

Two drivers have chosen to prioritize WEC, including Formula E championship leader Sebastien Buemi, who is bound by his contract with Toyotas LMP1 team. Jose Maria Lopez is also in a similar position, racing in the sister TS050 Hybrid at the Nrburgring.

Heres a run-down of the drivers who had to work around the clashesand where theyve ended up, and who will be replacing them.

Sebastien Buemi

Formula E championship leader Buemi had hoped to be racing in New York where he could have sewn up the title but is now risking a 50-plus point loss by missing the double-header.

Buemi said that his Le Mans result would decide whether or not he could have the chance to skip the Nrburgring, only for the No. 8 Toyota crew to have a miserable race, finishing eighth overall after two hours in the garage.

Buemis replacement for New York will need to be decided in the next 24 hours when the race stewards are informed of the entry list. Red Bull youngster Pierre Gasly is thought to be leading the chase for the seat.

Jose Maria Lopez

Like Buemi, Lopez was tied down by his Toyota contract and was not able to get out of his duties, meaning he will be missing New York as well.

Lopez will return to the No. 7 Toyota for the Nrburgring round, having been moved into the third car for Le Mans given his lack of prior experience following his Silverstone crash and the subsequent injury that forced him to miss Spa.

Lopez will be replaced at DS Virgin Racing in New York by Alex Lynn, the teams reserve driver. Lynn, in turn, will miss the Nrburgring race with G-Drive in LMP2, with Ben Hanley taking his place.

Sam Bird

Lopezs Formula E teammate, Sam Bird, is another driver who said his dilemma would be solved by his Le Mans result. The Briton is fourth in the WEC GT drivers championship with AF Corse and just 14 points off the lead, yet he opted to prioritize his Formula E duties in New York.

Bird will be replaced at AF Corse in the No. 71 Ferrari 488 GTE by Toni Vilander, who races in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for Risi Competizione and featured at Le Mans earlier this month.

Nicolas Prost

Renault e.dams appeared the face the prospect of having neither of its regular drivers in place for New York, only for Buemis teammate Nicolas Prost to put his Formula E duties first.

Prost has raced with Vaillante Rebellion Racing in LMP2 so far this season, but will step back for the Nrburgring. Seasoned sportscar racer Filipe Albuquerque takes his place.

Nelson Piquet Jr.

Nelson Piquet Jr. is another driver who had the same decision as Prost, putting Formula E over his duties with Rebellion in the sister Oreca 07 Gibson. Piquet will be replaced in the No. 13 car by Pipo Derani, whose three-race stint with Ford Chip Ganassi Racing came to an end at Le Mans.

Jean-Eric Vergne

Jean-Eric Vergne has made a flying start to life in the WEC this year with Manor, regularly featuring at the top of the timesheets, and stood out at Le Mans with some mammoth quintuple stints.

Vergne wont be at the Nrburgring, though, putting his Formula E duties with Techeetah a team he also has commercial interests in first. Roberto Merhi takes his place, returning to Manor after previously racing for the team in both F1 and WEC.
