Calling all Redheads the countdown to Oranges red letter day has begun.

There are only 50 days to go until redheads from all over are being urged to head to Wade Park on September 30 and join in the fun.

It will culminate in an attempt to break the world record for the most redheads in the one place at the one time.

The current record stands at 1672members of the ginger army.

Organiser Rachael Brooking announced actor and writer and redhead Stephen Hallwould be the MC for the four-hour event to run from 11am-3pm.

She said she had lined up guests ranging from Ronald McDonald to singer Joel Leffler who would be releasing his new single Auburn Hair in September and the Honey Drippin Mudskippers Band.

It is going to be a fun family festival, she said.

All redheads are being encouraged to wear white for the event.

And while true redheads will only be allowed in the official count Mrs Brooking said non-redheads were encouraged to join in.

Were encouraging non-redheads to spray, colour or don a red wig for the event, she said.

And blokes with red beards, the festival is looking for you.

There will be a red beard competition, she said.

Well be looking for the longest, bushiest, most manicured and even the reddest, she said.

The red theme will be splashed through the food, drink and merchandise stands.

That would include red apples, toffee apples, orange juice, ginger ale and red slushies for sale plus red wig and redhead merchandise stalls.

Mrs Brooking said there would be a cliff hanger and jumping castle plus face painting to entertain the children.

The Rural Fire Service is bringing a shiny new red fire truck.

Red and orange vintage and custom cars will also be on show.

And your big day at the festival will be captured by photographer Chris Rehberg of Oatley Photography.

Mrs Brooking said he would be doing portraits and was looking to do a book to commemorate the day Orange turns red.

Mrs Brooking said there would be a gold coin entry fee with proceeds to go toward supporting familiesof people with Huntingtons Disease [HD] as September is HDawareness month.

She is also organising the screening of theThe Inheritance, which showsa familys journey with HD, on September 1, Walk for Hope Orange and Tea with Gatsby-High Tea4HD at Kenna Hall on September 16 to raise funds and awareness for HD.

Red-headed woodpeckers are on decline – SW News Media

R ecently I had a wonderful opportunity to study and photograph a pair of red-headed woodpeckers nesting in an old tree and feeding their young.

All of this happened because a reader of this column gave me a shout to share the exciting news of this cool woodpecker.

The red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythocephalus) was once a very common woodpecker. In the mid-1800s, John James Audubon stated that the red-headed woodpecker was the most common woodpecker in North America. He called them semi-domesticated because they werent afraid of people. He stated that they were camp robbers and also a pest.

According to Audubon Society, Christmas Bird Count data, between the 1950s and the year 2010, the population of red-headed woodpeckers dropped dramatically. Over 80 percent of the population died out in just over 50 years.

Currently we continue to lose approximately 2 percent each year. That means within a couple decades we could see this bird become extinct if the trend continues.

The reason behind this decline is not understood. Many are quick to blame loss of habitat for their decline. While it is true that we have had a decline in mature tree habitat, no conclusive study indicates this to be the cause.

I would point to the fact that the population of red-bellied woodpeckers, with a similar size, shape and habitat requirement, is exploding across the country. If it were truly a habitat issue, it should affect both species equally since they both have the same habitat requirements.

Competition with European starlings for the nest cavity has also been implicated in the decline of the red-heads. While theres no doubt competition for the nest cavity with the starling will impact the red-heads, the population of the European starling is also dropping across the country at the same time. Also, if the starling usurps the red-head, the woodpecker can always excavate a new cavity.

It has been proposed that red-headed woodpeckers are habitat specialists and require a very unique habitat called the oak savanna. The argument goes that as oak savanna habitat is reduced, so goes the woodpecker.

I would maintain that the amount of oak savanna habitat was never very large and perhaps the reason why we find red-heads in this habitat now is because its the last holdout where the woodpeckers can still live. Ask anyone over the age of 50 who grew up on a farm and theyll remember red-headed woodpeckers, and they didnt have oak savanna habitat.

Over the past 30 years of studying and photographing red-headed woodpeckers, the vast majority have not been in oak savanna habitat. In fact the nest I was photographing recently was in a dead birch tree in a mixed deciduous forest.

There are over 200 species of woodpecker in the world and only four species cache food. Caching food is a process of storing nuts, such as acorns, in a cavity for later consumption. This might be a clue. For example the number of nut-bearing trees has declined dramatically over the past 100 years.

Both the number of oak trees, hickories and beech have declined and the American chestnut is completely gone. Whether or not this is the cause of the decline is not known.

Here are some interesting aspects of the red-headed woodpecker. In nearly all of the woodpeckers species, it is easy to see the difference between the male and female. Usually the male has some kind of marking on its head.

However the red-headed woodpecker male and female look exactly the same. Even if you have these birds in your hands and you can examine them, you wont be able to tell the difference between the male and the female. This is an interesting difference between the red-headed woodpeckers and the rest of the woodpeckers.

Red-headed woodpeckers are remarkable species and I always feel honored to be able to see and film this bird. If you have a nest in your yard, no matter how common the species, give me a shout. You never know, I might come visit.

Ask Hutch: Are vultures overtaking Hutchinson? – The Ottawa Herald

Amy Bickel @KansasAgland

For those who are superstitious, my little hometown of Gypsum could appear to have a few bad omens.

It proudly displays the fact, outside of town, that it has 13 exits. And if youre in town in the right season, youll find dozens of turkey vultures roosting on the rails of the water tower.

But alas, Ive never superstitious or fearful of disaster. The buzzards, however, are just a nuisance. Every evening they would come home after circling the skies for death and decay.

Thankfully, most of them already have left this summer, except for a few that cant seem to get the hint.

Q: My wife and I were walking in the 20th and Adams area. There was a real commotion in the tree, and we heard fluttering. We watched to see what all the racket was about - turns out they were turkey vultures. They were certainly bigger than a blackbird and bigger than a crow. They had red heads. What really struck the two of us was how many there were - we couldn't count them because there were so many. We've seen a few here or there driving off to McPherson but never that many of them and never that close. I didnt smell anything foul - whats up?

Dont worry, its not because there is a lot of roadkill.

While they devour anything dead, vultures, or buzzards, also have to find a place to rest, which is most likely what these birds are doing, said Mary Clark, Dillon Nature Centers director.

They search for food during the day and roost together in the evenings. Typically, you will see them around 30th Avenue - an area they have been known to roost for years.

Buzzards migrate south for the winter and now some of them will stay in Kansas from late spring to early fall, Clark said.

It is kind of a historic place, Clark said of the area around 30th Avenue, adding she has seen them on her rural property all summer. They like the northern part of Hutch - it might be historic - I dont really know. My guess is mom did it, grandma did it.

Other birds have historical roosting patterns, she said. When she first came to Hutchinson, the little community of Medora was like a scene from the movie The Birds. The area around the town had a high concentration of crows.

Then they cut down a great number of catalpas, she said.

Well, I guess we could remove a few trees if the problem was that bad. But the water tower will have to stay.

Q: With the repair work starting on Woodie Seat Bridge beginning, traffic is down to one lane in each direction. With so many ambulances that use the bridge every week, what is one supposed to do if you find yourself in front of an ambulance with their lights and sirens on? Theres no way to move over for them.

Yes, Woodie Seat will be down to one-lane traffic for several months. Thankfully, I havent seen much of a traffic jam here in Hutchinson - except during the Kansas State Fair. So hopefully this wont happen too often.

But if for some reason you are in a situation where you are in front of a siren-sounding ambulance, just keep driving.

She should precede until she can get over, said Hutchinson Police Traffic Sergeant Brian Hirt. There is nothing you can do until you can get over.

Q: I used to give coupons to the library to send to soldiers. However, they quit taking them. I know a few schools used to take them. Is there a place I can donate coupons?

I couldnt find a place in Hutchinson. The Hutchinson Public Library told me they did indeed quit taking the coupons. I called a couple schools, and they said because of time and personal restraints, they no longer take them, either.

However, you can mail them.

The program, called Troopons, enhances the well-being of military families overseas. In many countries, the U.S. dollar doesnt go as far, according to the website Support Our Troops. In England, it is worth 66 cents, Germany, 76 cents and Japan, 90 cents.

Military families dont get coupons in newspapers overseas. However, the stores on military bases accept U.S. coupons - even expired ones.

You can mail the coupons to: Support Our Troops, P.O. Box 70, Daytona Beach, FL 32115-0070.

A Redhead Emoji Might Finally Be On The Way & People Are Losing Their Minds – Gears Of Biz

Less than two percent of the population has red hair, which seems weird because I know so many amazing redheads. As a result, redheads dont have their own emoji, which seems pretty unfair but luckily, that may be about to change. It was announced on Twitter that a redhead emoji may be slated for release in June 2018. The blog How To Be A Redhead tweeted the news that the new redhead emojis should be here in less than a year. A press release from the Emoji Subcommittee at Unicode (yes, this is a real thing) confirmed that the redhead emoji is on the schedule, though it does still need to be approved at the subcommittees fourth-quarter meeting.

It seems like redheads have waited far too long to finally be recognized in this universal way, especially considering all of the special things about redheads, like their ability to make their own vitamin D. Can anyone else do that? In a January post, How To Be A Redhead wrote, The lack of a redhead emoji has been the most frequent complaint from Emojipedia users in the past three months (go redheads!). With one to two per cent of the population born with red hair, that means as many as 138,000,000 iPhones are crying out for a ginger-inclusive update. Thats a lot of people! These days, emojis are the only way to describe your feelings, and a whole demographic of people are missing out.

NEWS: Redhead emojis are coming in June 2018! https://t.co/Sex95bjPF1 pic.twitter.com/nesLSDlMeC

The FOMO experienced by redheads was so prevalent that some people in Scotland even started a petition for their right to be represented through their own emoji. In Scotland, Ireland and Wales, redheads make up 10 percent of the population, Telegraph reported, and the lack of emoji excludes a large number of the population from being able to express themselves digitally.

AT LONG LAST MY LONG EMOJI DROUGHT IS COMING TO A MIDDLE https://t.co/17rZ2BvKv1

Apple already has six different skin tones, and over a dozen hair styles for its characters but has faced criticism on social media for not introducing a redhead, Jamie Johnson wrote.

Omg there finally might be a redhead emoji!!!!! pic.twitter.com/0QHpx8o4aE

Lets hope the wait is almost over for these people who are also more likely to be left handed, and never go grey.

Red hair, curly hair, bald: A new batch of emoji hairstyles may be on the way – Today.com

email

It took a while, but you can now personalize your emojis with hair colors ranging from black to blond. So far, redheads have been left out of the emoji universe but that may change.

Fiery-haired emojis could be officially released next June, according to the Emoji Subcommittee of the Unicode Consortium, the group that sets the global standard for emojis.

The proposed red-haired emojis.

Redheads have been a highly requested addition, Jeremy Burge, the founder of the reference website Emojipedia and a member of Unicodes Emoji Subcommittee, told TODAY Style in an email.

In fact, ginger emojis were Emojipedias most-requested addition last year, Burge said. So what caused the delay? It came down to some tricky details.

The implementation raises questions like which emojis should be able to have red hair, and if red hair is added, what about other hair colors or styles? Burge said. The current approach is to use a flexible system, which could allow any emoji to be given red hair, although no recommendations have yet been made on which emojis should be given a red hair option.

Burge submitted a proposal for how redhead emojis could possibly appear, along with other common hairstyles like curly hair, white hair, and baldness.

A preview of what curly-haired emojis would look like.

The new hairstyles are still subject to final approval early next year, though Burge noted that in the past, the majority of emoji candidates have been approved.

Bald male and female emojis could also be an option.

Burge added that unnatural hair colors such as blue or green could be added down the line if there is sufficient demand, but said that for now the proposed entries for red hair, curly hair, white hair and baldness do appear to cover the majority of requests."

And don't forget gray or white hair!

The (hopefully!) upcoming ginger emojis should be especially welcome news to one of our favorite redheaded celebs, Jessica Chastain, who spoke out recently about her trademark strands.

The actress revealed that she was teased for her hair shade growing up, but now embraces her gorgeous natural color and refuses to dye it for roles.

Whatever you are ridiculed about that makes you different is what you'll celebrate in the future," she told Refinery29. "If I wanted to dye my hair, I could, but I realized that's who I am, and my differences (make me) special."

And, plenty of celebs who were born blonde, brunette or raven-haired, including Ariel Winter, Shakira and Aubrey Plaza, have embraced red locks. ("Redheads have more fun!" Shakira recently proclaimed).

Of course, redhead can encompass a variety of shades, from bright orange to auburn to strawberry blond, and one day, it would be amazing to see all these lovely hues represented in emoji form. But in the meantime, the new, proposed emojis are a major step for all gingerkind!

Redheaded Emojis Are Coming To Smartphones In 2018 – Simplemost

Redheads, rejoice! I know youve been waiting a long time for this, struggling to convey your emotions in a way that truly reflects you as a person. But the day has finally come. At long last, there will be an emoji that celebrates you in all your fiery-haired glory.

It was recently announced by Unicode Technical Committeethat redheaded emojis will be coming to a smartphone near you in June 2018. The UTC is the group that decides which graphics and visuals will be universally accessible across different phones and platforms (theyre essentially THE source of approved emoji, which is why theyre able to tell us all the emoticons were using incorrectly!).

For years, redheads of all hues have been complaining that there are no emojis that reflect their gorgeous locks:

WHERE IS THE GINGER EMOJI pic.twitter.com/wvb9C26udU

Ginger Problems (@GingerProblems) August 6, 2017

But finally, redheads will be able to text message with the secure knowledge that their emojis reflect their truly unique beauty.

The truth is that redheads have been getting the shaft for quite some time. Not only have they been targeted for bullying, but they also tend to sunburneasily, and they might actually have an increased sensitivity to pain.

But being a redhead can also come with some amazing benefits. First of all, its highly rare (only about 1 to 2 percent of people in the world have red hair). Second of all, while it is true that redheads are highly sensitive to the sunlight and prone to sunburn, the reason behind this is actually pretty interesting.

Researchers theorize that the gene for red hair was an adaption that evolved in super-cloudy parts of the world like Scotland and Ireland, because it was a way to maximize the little time in the sunlight that these people enjoyed. By becoming extra-sensitive to the sun, they could make the most of the suns Vitamin D and absorb even more of its life-giving properties.

Thats so cool! Additionally, research has shown that redheads can actually make their own vitamin D, so when exposed to low-light conditions, they go into redheaded superhero mode and formulate their own, thanks to their bodys lower melanin concentration.

And not only are redheads able to make their own vitamin D, but they also wont ever have to deal with gray hairs! Hey, with superpowers like that, its about time they get an emoji that reflects their gorgeous locks.

Redhead emoji set for 2018 – The Independent

Across the world, having red hair is quite rare - just two per cent of the global population are ginger.

In Scotland and Ireland, however, that figure rises to 13 per cent and 10 per cent, giving the UK one of the highest concentrations of redheads in the world.

Its little wonder then that for years theres been so much outrage amongst Brits at the lack of ginger emoji.

But that could be all set to change. Finally.

Emojipedia have released the list of 67 emoji under consideration for the 2018 batch, and amongst them is a redhead.

It does still need to be approved at the subcommittees fourth-quarter meeting, but its on schedule.

The lack of ginger emoji has been one of the biggest complaints Emojipedia has received in recent years.

There was even an online petition launched in Scotland demanding one be introduced.

So needless to say, people are very excited that the redhead emoji looks set to be finally happening.

I reach for a ginger emoji at least once a day, so this is the final piece to the emoji puzzle, 25-year-old redhead Rachel from Hertfordshire told The Independent.

Theyve been teasing us with the prospect for a while - I hope we dont have to wait as long as we did for the avocado!

And 24-year-old redhead Stephanie from Winchester also believes its about time there was a ginger emoji: At the moment ginger people have to choose either to represent themselves as blonde or brunette and it just seems unfair! she told The Independent.

I cant wait to finally be able to use an emoji which actually represents me.

And its not the only exciting new emoji we could soon have to play with - also up for consideration is a curly hair emoji, a lobster, a llama, a womans flat shoe, a sliced bagel, a cupcake, a skateboard and a teddy bear, amongst others.

We should all be able to represent ourselves in emoji form, and even if your exact hair colour isnt an option, the launch of a ginger emoji is certainly a step in the right direction.

Coast company offers gifts to ginger sperm donors – The Sunshine Coast Daily

IT'S a truth universally acknowledged: gingers cop a lot of flack for the colour of their hair, but a Coast company is on a mission to change that.

In a show of solidarity and passion for the continuation of the red-headed blood lines, Buderim Ginger has pledged to support every ranga who donates sperm to a fertility clinic.

"It's no secret that gingers are often exposed to being teased for their hair and skin colour, experiencing prejudice since the beginning of time, Buderim Ginger group marketing manager Mark Henderson said.

"Let's use this call to action to further foster acceptance and diversity in the community, and give our copper-haired friends the celebration they deserve.

The company will donate a carton of ginger beer to every redhead who can provide proof of their sperm donation, in the form of a confirmation letter or email from a clinic, a photo of a donor holding a fertility centre pamphlet or even a selfie out the front.

Sperm donor matching service Co-ParentMatch reported only 2% of its sperm donors were redheads, but a survey by Buderim Ginger revealed 39% of people would be willing to date only a redhead in order to keep the ginger gene alive.

Another 24.5% would be willing to donate or use ginger sperm in order to support the cause.

"We've come a long way since 2011, when one of the world's largest sperm donation banks, Cryos International, was actually turning away ginger donors, Mr Henderson said.

Redhead Emojis to Roll Out in June 2018 – TeenVogue.com

It's no secret that redheads have been very patiently waiting for scarlet-haired emojis for what feels like forever now. Many have expressed major frustration over the lack of inclusion (there was even a petition in Scotland that garnered more than 20,000 signatures), and we can definitely understand why considering how many redheads by birth, as well as redheads by choice are left out when speaking in symbols.

So, it comes as very welcome news that red-haired emojis will most likely be coming to iPhones in June 2018! It's no joke: @HowToBeARedhead tweeted the this morning, keeping it short and simple, saying "NEWS: Redhead emojis are coming in June 2018!" We are definitely closer to getting our fiery friends, but the final outcome is still up in the air. A press release released by Unicode explains that while redhead emojis are on the final candidate list, they will still need to be officially approved at Unicodes 2017 Quarter 4 meeting. Jeremy Burge, the Chief Emoji Office at Emojipedia, also Tweeted on August 3, saying "necessary disclaimer: this 2018 emoji list is a draft, and subject to change ."

Now that we know redheads are officially on the draft, we have to wonder if they'll include multiple hair types or just roll out one with straight strands. Perhaps it goes without saying but we sincerely hope Unicode will consider making the emoji with textured or curly red hair, as we most definitely need more visibility in that category, too.

We're sure redheads around the world will be jumping for joy at this promising news considering they've been asking for years now. And while they will still have to wait until next summer to start actually using them should everything pan out, that is! this definitely calls for a hair flip.

Red hot rod turns heads at Thunder in the City – Meadville Tribune

Could you imagine racing that? one woman asked as she walked by a red hot rod parked at the north end of Diamond Park on Saturday afternoon.

Wow. Thats a race car, a child exclaimed as he passed by.

The most popular question on everyones mind, however, as they passed the custom hot rod built by Meadville resident Ron Williams, was, How fast does it go?

Ehhh, I dont know, Williams responded. Beyond what I want to go. It gets there in a hurry. Lets just say that.

Williams Ford red hot rod was a show stopper at the annual Thunder in the City Bike and Car show on Saturday. The car was one of a few dozen on display, but one of the only, if not the only, one made from scratch.

Its a hot rod made out of a 1923 Ford Model T, Williams said. Its my retirement project.

His retirement project took three years and more than $30,000 to complete. The engine, an original from the Ford Model T Bucket, cost roughly $10,000 to $12,000 alone.

Theyre getting harder and harder to find, Williams said.

Williams had always had desire to build a hot rod.

I went to vocational school, he said. And one of my boys is very interested in hot rods. So I decided to build one. I retired and got to the point where I could afford one.

Williams carries with him a photo album documenting each stage of his build, which included cutting a new door and installing a new dashboard and a wooden trunk lid, built using tongue and groove by Williams brother-in-law, Larry Larson, of Fairfax, Va.

Of course, those were just a few of the projects.

I worked when I wanted to, Williams said. And when things started to go bad, I could walk away for a while.

I had as much fun making it as I do driving it, he added.

And for those really wondering, Williams said the speedometer has read 100 miles per hour while cruising before. But he hasnt tested it any harder.

I dont really take it too far, Williams said. Erie is about as far as I will go with it.

Thunder in the City concluded Saturday with the Rusty Hanaway Memorial Bike Parade highlighting the days events. Attendees also enjoyed a Corvette parade, a variety of vendors, free live music and a cornhole tournament.

See the exquisite fossil that revealed the colors of a giant armored nodosaur – Tulsa World

For the biggest animals, bulk is a great defense. Other creatures need tricks, like the snowy coat of an arctic hare or a hagfishs choking slime clouds. But elephants and rhinoceroses get by with tough hides and sheer size. They have little to fear from predators and little need for camouflage hence their dull gray skin.

A new fossil analysis reveals that things were different in the Cretaceous period, 110 million years ago. Even massive dinosaurs with thick skin and long spikes needed to avoid hungry eyes. Under pressure from ferocious predators, these herbivores evolved camouflage, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Current Biology. For the first time, paleontologists detected color in the fossil of a giant armored dinosaur called a nodosaur.

The nodosaur was the sort of creature that wouldnt bother with a disguise if it lived today. It had horns and scale plates for defense. And it was huge 2,900 pounds or more when full-grown, bigger than a black rhino. But size and armor were not enough.

The authors discovered chemical traces of pheomelanin, the same pigment that gives redheads their hair color, within the dinosaurs fossilized hide. The nodosaur was darker red and brown on top than on the bottom. This pattern, one seen today with deer and antelope, obscures a creatures silhouette.

It gives you a sense of how nasty the theropod predators would have been back in the Cretaceous, said Caleb M. Brown, a paleontologist at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Canada and an author of the new report.

That the scientists could find color at all, let alone a pattern, surprised other experts.

I never seriously thought that color preservation on this scale would have been possible, said Thomas R. Holtz, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Maryland who was not involved with the study. This skeleton is truly spectacular in terms of the quality of completeness.

The dinosaur died in 3-D, still covered with fossilized skin and with the remnants of its last meal in its stomach. Theres no other dinosaur specimen like it, Brown said. And, rather than the severe contortion of many dinosaur skeletons, this nodosaur looks almost peaceful as though its last act was a nap on Medusas porch.

A man digging in Canadian oil sands in 2011 struck the fossil with his backhoe, as The Washington Post reported in May. A sea once covered that region in northeastern Alberta. People had discovered bones there before, mostly aquatic reptiles like plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs, but the nodosaur was the first dinosaur discovered in the Alberta mine. Researchers hypothesize that the animal tumbled into a river and died. Its body floated out to the sea, where it sank. There, layers of sand kept scavengers at bay as the carcass settled into rock.

It is an unusual depositional environment for a dinosaur, Holtz said. But it was a lucky one for paleontologists. Scientists have found color traces in fossils before, though most of those were small animals dug up from ancient lakes.

After the miner found the nodosaur, a fossil preparer named Mark Mitchell worked for more than five years to expose the creature within the rock. The animals scientific name, Borealopelta markmitchelli, honors his 7,000 hours of labor.

When Brown and his colleagues examined the fossilized skin, they found molecular signatures left by pheomelanin pigment. Whats more, these analyses showed the reddish-brown was more pronounced on top than on the bottom, a pattern known as countershading.

The further you went toward the belly, the less and less of this stuff there was, Brown said. It was darker pigmented on top and lighter on the bottom. The pattern obscures an animals outline, brightening bellies in shadow and darkening where light falls from above. Its a common camouflage, found in chipmunks, gazelle and giraffes but never before in a land animal the size of a rhino.

Even though this was the first time this pattern had been found in a large dinosaur, the discovery was incredibly reasonable, in Holtzs view.

The largest living land predators big bears and tigers are dwarfed by the giant dinosaur predators, he said. (The latter really were nasty: The 20-foot-tall Tyrannosaurus rex, though it lived a bit later than this nodosaur, could pulverize bones with a powerful chomp.) We have plenty of other evidence of big predatory dinosaurs having attacked living plant-eaters, with those other prey fossils showing partially healed bite marks.

This wont be the last time we hear about this nodosaur. Thanks to the detail of the fossil, you can test some ideas and aspects of their biology that werent possible before, Brown said. The paleontologists plan to examine the preserved stomach contents to see what it ate before it died. Theres going to be a lot more work on this particular animal.

Commentary: Red-headed Woodpeckers are a remarkable species … – SW News Media

Recently I had a wonderful opportunity to study and photograph a pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers nesting in an old tree and feeding their young. All of this happened because a reader of this column gave me a shout to share the exciting news of this cool woodpecker.

The Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythocephalus) was once a very common woodpecker. In the mid 1800's John James Audubon stated that the Red-headed Woodpecker was the most common woodpecker in North America. He called them semi-domesticated because they weren't afraid of people. He stated that they were camp robbers and also a pest.

According to the National Audubon Society, Christmas Bird Count data, between the 1950's and the year 2010 the population of Red-headed Woodpeckers dropped dramatically.

I would point to the fact that the similar size, shape and habitat requirement Red-bellied Woodpecker populations are exploding across the country. If it were truly a habitat issue it should affect both species equally since they both have the same habitat requirements.

Competition with European Starlings for the nest cavity has also been implicated in the decline of the Red-heads. While no doubt competition for the nest cavity with the starling will impact the Red-heads, the population of the European Staring is also dropping across the country at the same time. Also, if the starling usurps the Red-head the woodpecker can always excavate a new cavity.

It has been proposed that Red-headed Woodpeckers are habitat specialists and require a very unique habitat called the oak savanna. The argument goes that as oak savanna habitat is reduced so goes the woodpecker. I would maintain that the amount of oak savanna habitat was never very large and perhaps the reason why we find Red-heads in this habitat now is because it's the last hold out where the woodpeckers can still live. All you need to do is ask anyone over the age of 50 who grew up on a farm if they remember Red-headed Woodpeckers and they didn't have oak savanna habitat.

Over the past 30 years of studying and photographing Red-headed Woodpeckers the vast majority have not been in oak savanna habitat. In fact the nest I was photographing recently was in a dead birch tree in a mixed deciduous forest.

There are over 200 species of woodpecker in the world and only 4 species cache food. Caching food is a process of storing nuts such as acorns in a cavity for later consumption. This might be a clue. For example the number of nut bearing trees has declined dramatically over the past 100 years. The number of oak trees, hickories and beech trees have declined and the American Chestnut is completely gone. Whether or not this is the cause of the decline is not known.

The Red-headed Woodpecker has many interesting aspects. In nearly all of the woodpeckers species it is easy to see the difference between the male and female. Usually the male has some kind of marking on its head. However the Red-headed Woodpecker male and female look exactly the same. Even if you have these birds in your hands and you can examine them, you won't be able to tell the difference between the male and the female.

Until next time...

The Hips Dont Lie singer, 40, captioned one picture she regrammed from singer Nicky Jam, Redheads have more fun. She also topped her locks off with a black hat for the shot but went hat-free for a second pic.

The question: Is this her real hair or a wig? The former Voice coach has been known to sport a faux-topper for a quick change as she did with a purple piece in February.

But shes also known to play around with her hair color as well. In fact, the blonde shade shes known for is lightened considerably from her natural brunette tone!

The song is the latest from her new album El Dorado released in May of this year, her first in three years. In between she's been keeping busy the mom of two (with long-time partner Gerard Pique) devotes much of her time to humanitarian causes and organizations, including her own Fundacion Pies Descalzos.
