Poker – Wikipedia

Family of card games

Poker is any of a number of card games in which players wager over which hand is best according to that specific game's rules in ways similar to these rankings. Often using a standard deck, poker games vary in deck configuration, the number of cards in play, the number dealt face up or face down, and the number shared by all players, but all have rules which involve one or more rounds of betting.

In most modern poker games the first round of betting begins with one or more of the players making some form of a forced bet (the blind or ante). In standard poker, each player bets according to the rank they believe their hand is worth as compared to the other players. The action then proceeds clockwise as each player in turn must either match (or "call") the maximum previous bet, or fold, losing the amount bet so far and all further involvement in the hand. A player who matches a bet may also "raise" (increase) the bet. The betting round ends when all players have either called the last bet or folded. If all but one player folds on any round, the remaining player collects the pot without being required to reveal their hand. If more than one player remains in contention after the final betting round, a showdown takes place where the hands are revealed, and the player with the winning hand takes the pot.

With the exception of initial forced bets, money is only placed into the pot voluntarily by a player who either believes the bet has positive expected value or who is trying to bluff other players for various strategic reasons. Thus, while the outcome of any particular hand significantly involves chance, the long-run expectations of the players are determined by their actions chosen on the basis of probability, psychology, and game theory.

Poker has increased in popularity since the beginning of the 20th century and has gone from being primarily a recreational activity confined to small groups of enthusiasts to a widely popular activity, both for participants and spectators, including online, with many professional players and multimillion-dollar tournament prizes.

Poker was developed sometime during the early 19th century in the United States. Since those early beginnings, the game has grown to become an extremely popular pastime worldwide.

In the 1937 edition of Foster's Complete Hoyle, R. F. Foster wrote: "the game of poker, as first played in the United States, five cards to each player from a twenty-card pack, is undoubtedly the Persian game of As-Nas." By the 1990s some gaming historians including David Parlett started to challenge the notion that poker is a direct derivative of As-Nas. Developments in the 1970s led to poker becoming far more popular than it was before. Modern tournament play became popular in American casinos after the World Series of Poker began, in 1970.[1]

Poker on television increased the popularity of the game during the turn of the millennium. This resulted in the poker boom a few years later between 20032006.

Examples of top poker hand categories

In casual play, the right to deal a hand typically rotates among the players and is marked by a token called a dealer button (or buck). In a casino, a house dealer handles the cards for each hand, but the button (typically a white plastic disk) is rotated clockwise among the players to indicate a nominal dealer to determine the order of betting. The cards are dealt clockwise around the poker table, one at a time.

One or more players are usually required to make forced bets, usually either an ante or a blind bet (sometimes both). The dealer shuffles the cards, the player on the chair to his or her right cuts, and the dealer deals the appropriate number of cards to the players one at a time, beginning with the player to his or her left. Cards may be dealt either face-up or face-down, depending on the variant of poker being played. After the initial deal, the first of what may be several betting rounds begins. Between rounds, the players' hands develop in some way, often by being dealt additional cards or replacing cards previously dealt. At the end of each round, all bets are gathered into the central pot.

At any time during a betting round, if one player bets, no opponents choose to call (match) the bet, and all opponents instead fold, the hand ends immediately, the bettor is awarded the pot, no cards are required to be shown, and the next hand begins. This is what makes bluffing possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker, one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings.

At the end of the last betting round, if more than one player remains, there is a showdown, in which the players reveal their previously hidden cards and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand according to the poker variant being played wins the pot. A poker hand comprises five cards; in variants where a player has more than five cards available to them, only the best five-card combination counts. There are 10 different kinds of poker hands such as straight flush, four of a kind etc.

Poker variations are played where a "high hand" or a "low hand" may be the best desired hand. In other words, when playing a poker variant with "low poker" the best hand is one that contains the lowest cards (and it can get further complicated by including or not including flushes and straights etc. from "high hand poker"). So while the "majority" of poker game variations are played "high hand", where the best high "straight, flush etc." wins, there are poker variations where the "worst hand" wins, such as "low ball, acey-deucey, high-lo split etc. game variations". To summarize, there can be variations that are "high poker", "low poker", and "high low split". In the case of "high low split" the pot is divided among the best high hand and low hand.

Poker has many variations,[2][3] all following a similar pattern of play[4] and generally using the same hand ranking hierarchy. There are four main families of variants, largely grouped by the protocol of card-dealing and betting:

Five Card Draw:A complete hand is dealt to each player, face-down. Then each player must place an ante to the pot. They can then see their cards and bet accordingly. After betting, players can discard up to three cards and take new ones from the top of the deck. Then, another round of betting takes place. Finally, each player must show his or her cards and the player with the best hand wins.

Community card poker: Also known as "flop poker", community card poker is a variation of stud poker. Players are dealt an incomplete hand of face-down cards, and then a number of face-up community cards are dealt to the centre of the table, each of which can be used by one or more of the players to make a 5-card hand. Texas hold 'em and Omaha are two well-known variants of the community card family.

There are several methods for defining the structure of betting during a hand of poker. The three most common structures are known as "fixed-limit", "pot-limit", and "no-limit". In fixed-limit poker, betting and raising must be done by standardised amounts. For instance, if the required bet is X, an initial bettor may only bet X; if a player wishes to raise a bet, they may only raise by X. In pot-limit poker, a player may bet or raise any amount up to the size of the pot. When calculating the maximum raise allowed, all previous bets and calls, including the intending raiser's call, are first added to the pot. The raiser may then raise the previous bet by the full amount of the pot. In no-limit poker, a player may wager their entire betting stack at any point that they are allowed to make a bet. In all games, if a player does not have enough betting chips to fully match a bet, they may go "all-in", allowing them to show down their hand for the amount of chips they have remaining.

Other games that use poker hand rankings may likewise be referred to as poker. Video poker is a single-player video game that functions much like a slot machine; most video poker machines play draw poker, where the player bets, a hand is dealt, and the player can discard and replace cards. Payout is dependent on the hand resulting after the draw and the player's initial bet.

Strip poker is a traditional poker variation where players remove clothing when they lose bets. Since it depends only on the basic mechanic of betting in rounds, strip poker can be played with any form of poker; however, it is usually based on simple variants with few betting rounds, like five card draw.

Another game with the poker name, but with a vastly different mode of play, is called Acey-Deucey or Red Dog poker. This game is more similar to Blackjack in its layout and betting; each player bets against the house, and then is dealt two cards. For the player to win, the third card dealt (after an opportunity to raise the bet) must have a value in-between the first two. Payout is based on the odds that this is possible, based on the difference in values of the first two cards. Other poker-like games played at casinos against the house include three card poker and pai gow poker.

A variety of computer poker players have been developed by researchers at the University of Alberta, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Auckland amongst others.

In a January 2015 article[5] published in Science, a group of researchers mostly from the University of Alberta announced that they "essentially weakly solved" heads-up limit Texas Hold 'em with their development of their Cepheus poker bot. The authors claimed that Cepheus would lose at most 0.001 big blinds per game on average against its worst-case opponent, and the strategy is thus so "close to optimal" that "it can't be beaten with statistical significance within a lifetime of human poker playing".[6]

I won 2 million playing poker – this is what I did next – Hull Live

He embraced the razzmatazz of Las Vegas and was renowned for his distinctive jacket and flamboyant nature.

When it came to winning Bridlington man John Hesp was a larger-than-life character even in the neon lights of Sin City.

But when it comes to spending cash he is a typical and humble Yorkshire man.

Mr Hesp became an overnight poker star after he stormed Las Vegas to win 2million, as the Daily Star reports.

The caravan salesman had only ever won a couple of hundred pounds at events at his local casino before his trip to Vegas in 2017.

But the granddad-of-eight left pokers top pros stunned when he finished in fourth out of 7,200 players in the World Series of Poker Main Event - the worlds biggest and most prestigious poker tournament.

Mr Hesp, 67, came away a millionaire having enjoyed the high life for a few weeks.

But back in East Yorkshire, you would be hard pushed to be persuaded about his incredible windfall.

There is no flashy car, no exotic holiday, only a trip to the Yorkshire Dales in his caravan with wife Mandy.

My lifestyle was never extravagant or exorbitant, Mr Hesp said, and to win the extra money, I could have more or less had anything. But I had everything.

When I say everything, I had my caravan in the Yorkshire Dales.

Mr Hesp has revealed the money he won in Vegas remains largely untouched.

We particularly enjoy the Dales for the peace and quiet that we get - and that was enough, he said.

We didnt need any fancy holidays or any big expensive toys or anything like that.

So the money is still in the bank!

We treated family, that sort of thing, so they had a few quid out of it but other than that, we havent really spent anything on ourselves.

This year, the World Series of Poker is taking place online only, and being hosted by GG Poker, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At the tournament three years ago Hesp went from being an average man to an overnight poker superstar during and was even invited to dinner by the legendary Phil Hellmuth.

Other poker superstars wanted selfies with him and Mr Hesp was known for his jovial table chatter and colourful jacket, which made him instantly recognisable anywhere in the poker room.

Simply by making the top thousand players, Hesp had achieved more than he could have ever imagined.

But when he got to the top 20, every elimination was suddenly worth a life-changing amount of cash.

And he insists his desire to have fun only worked in his favour.

How much did a $100,000 hike in prize money make to my style of play? I would say nothing, Hesp said. Whereas I think for most others, you would say that it did.

When I say nothing, I say that with a degree of humility. It is not intended to be cocky. But I had won when I got into the top thousand players. Anything else was a bonus.

I was determined to keep on playing just as I had been doing at the start with a spirit of fun and enjoyment in the game.

It was almost like I donned my jacket and my hat and became the fun face of poker.

In some way I would say it is a bit of an act, getting into a character mode. As we got towards the final table, it became symbolic of the fun side of it.

Such has been his remarkable tale, it is now in the process of being turned into a movie. Read more about that here.

But Mr Hesp has turned his back on pokers high life, happy to quit while he was very much ahead.

The extent of his poker playing is now restricted to private home games with his closest friends.

I was just a regular small town guy from Bridlington, who had a single buy-in to the biggest tournament in the world, Mr Hesp said.

In doing so, all these top pros that I only ever dreamed that I would ever meet, were actually wanting to rub shoulders with me and have pictures taken with me.

That experience alone was worth everything. The fact I won that money was wonderful.

"Take the money away and that experience alone was worth $10,000.

Arjun Rampal is playing poker to support NGOs – The Hindu

Do you play poker? asks Arjun Rampal. No? Well, then we have to convert you, he laughs over a phone call from Mumbai.

Rampal is partner and brand ambassador for PokerHigh.com, a licensed poker site that is now aiming to raise funds for smaller, deserving charities in India.

There was a big surge in the number of people logging in to play [poker] during lockdown. We thought why not use this skilled game to give back to smaller NGOs that have not been getting recognition, he explains. There are different teams representing the charities and people can decide which one they wish to play for.

The initiative, which Rampal says has been successful, started two months ago when the group began sending food parcels to around two lakh people. This is our third month and we get players from all over India. The winners get to keep what they win. Whatever stake the bank makes goes to the NGOs, he says.

Other than Chennai-based Pudhiya Udhayam, there are also NGOs that serve animals such as CUPA in Bengaluru and Humanity for Animals in Kochi. Human life is important but so are the lives of animals, says Rampal, adding that during phase one they managed to generate 2.11 lakh, of which CUPA received a little over 72,000 (it took care of the feeding of over 150 dogs at the centre for a month) and Pudhiya Udhayam received 1.38 lakh, which took care of dry rations for over 500 families in Chennai.

The actor plays too, as a part of PokerHigh. My game is decent. But there is room for improvement, he laughs. Rampal has used time during lockdown to play a lot more poker. This time has been amazing as it allows you to introspect, pause and have a lot more clarity. Lot of things in life seem unnecessary and you can put them out of your list, he says.

The pandemic, Rampal believes, is a huge wake up call. We have to be far more compassionate and be open to change. Panicking is not going to help. It is important to adapt and adjust. We need to stick with the new norms, maintain social distance, wear a mask. A lot of people are just careless in the way they move around. If the pandemic has not shaken them up, then you should panic, he says.

Lockdown has also affected those in the film industry and although film shoots are yet to resume, Rampal says that it has altogether been a great year for him. I was working on three films and two web series.

This includes The Big Battle of Bhima Koregaon, Aparna Sens The Rapist, an unnamed action film he was shooting for in London, Abbas Mustans Penthouse. He was also set to start shooting for the second season of The Final Call. I was working 350 days of the year but God had other plans. He said go home and spend time with the family, and thats what I am doing with (partner) Gabriella [Demetriades], my daughters Mahikaa, Myra and my son Arik, he adds.

Focusing on flushes and straights in video poker – Atlantic City Weekly

Given optimal strategy in video poker, youll see full houses just about as often as flushes and flushes just about as often as straights.

Paybacks differ widely. The goal of designers is a game thats fun to play, attractive to players and makes a profit for the house. Reflecting true odds in the pay table takes a back seat to all that.

On the player side, payback differences necessitate strategies that are more aggressive toward more lucrative hands.

Lets set aside full houses for now and focus on flushes and straights.

In 9-6 Jacks or Better, youll see full houses an average of once per 87 hands, flushes once per 91 and straights once per 91. In 9-6 Double Double Bonus Poker, its once per 92 for full houses, once per 88 for flushes and once per 78 for straights.

In both games, flushes pay 6-for-1 and straights 4-for-1. And in both games, we treat a one-card draw for a flush with more respect than a one-card draw for a straight.

Its easy to see the difference when we look at hands that include four cards to a flush as well as a low pair vs. four-cards to an open-ended straight and a low pair.

Imagine youre dealt 3-4-6-9 of hearts along with a 6 of spades. In 9-6 Jacks or Better, your average return is 5.74 coins per five wagered if you hold the hearts and discard the other 6. If you hold the pair instead and discard the other three hearts, the average return drops to 4.12 coins.

In 9-6 DDB, the average return for holding the hearts also is 5.74 coins, but the average on 6-6 drops to 3.66. Thats because the two pair return on DDB is only 1-for-1 vs. the 2-for-1 on JB.

Now imagine youre dealt 5-6-7-8 of mixed suits along with a second 6. In 9-6 Double Double Bonus, the average return for holding 5-6-7-8 is only 3.40 coins. Holding four parts of a straight is not as good a play has holding 6-6, at 3.66.

The difference is wider in 9-6 Jacks or Better. The average return on the mixed-suit 5-6-7-8 remains 3.40 coins per five wagered, but the higher two-pair return sends the average on 6-6 rising to 4.12.

There is a difference in the frequency of successful draws. Starting with four cards in the same suit, there are nine remaining cards that could complete your flush. Starting with four cards toward an open-ended straight, there are eight cards that could result in a straight. In the case of 5-6-7-8, any of the four 4s or four 9s would complete the straight.

Coupled with the gap in paybacks, that makes chasing flushes more lucrative than chasing straights.

Its important to separate strategy for flush draws vs. straight draws when a low pair is involved, but there is no such conundrum when the alternative is a single high card. When either four cards to a flush or four to an open-ended straight is accompanied by a Jack or higher, the better play is to discard the high card.

Average returns on a lone Jack are 2.40 coins in 9-6 DDB and 2.43 in 9-6 JB. Averages remain 5.74 on the four-card flush and 3.40 on the unsuited 5-6-7-8 in either game,

So we hold either four to a flush or open-ended straight over a high card in either game, but theres a separation where low pairs are involved. Hold four to a flush over a low pair, but a low pair over four to a straight.

Live poker is among various industries severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, with land-based casinos and poker rooms forced to close. While some have started to reopen, others have permanently shut down. Thousands of players who used to play in live settings are now contemplating on formally transitioning to online poker.

If you are one of those players, then playing cash games online would be a great way to restart your career and build your bankroll. While a lot of players might already know the nitty gritty of playing online cash games, some just lack the knowledge. If you are the latter and are considering to try your hand at the virtual felts, the tips below will come in handy as you move to the online poker tables.

Get Ready For Faster Game Speed

Both live and online poker follow essentially the same rules when it comes to cash games, however there are also differences in some aspects, including speed. In a live poker game, a full ring usually involves about 25-30 hands being dealt per hour, but online, that number increases to 60-80 hands each hour. But that is only if you play just one table. Expect that number to increase further the moment you multi-table, playing more than one game at the same time.

Also take note that if you play an online cash game, you will have less time to act. This is because the game involves a time bank that puts a limit to how long you can make a decision. This is so much different compared to a live setting where there is a lot of downtime between hands.

Dont Go Straight To Multi-tabling

If youre just starting to get to know how online cash games work, you better stick with just one table and then advance to the next level once youre ready. Take things one step at a time no need to rush; if you do, you wont be able to put enough focus on your game which will then lead to potential losses. You can add more tables if you have established a decent win rate.

Start Small

If you want to achieve something, its always practical to begin with tiny steps. It will allow you to properly gauge your skills and improve them along the way without putting too much of your bankroll on the line.

In a live game, a $1/$2 stake is the level preferred by most beginners. However in the online world, new players are encouraged to begin in much lower stakes, like $0.10/$0.25, or $0.25/$0.50. This is because you will most probably compete with fellow beginners at this level, compared to the $1/$2 games where you will likely take on the more experienced online crushers.

Manage your bankroll properly by not rushing to go to the higher stakes. Begin from the bottom and then slowly climb your way to the top.

Get Yourself A Reliable Gaming Set-Up

If you plan on taking your game online, one of the most important things to consider is whether or not your current set-up can withstand long hours of play without unnecessary interruptions.

A good set-up will enable you to play with much needed comfort and convenience, helping you to perform better. You can go for a two-monitor set-up, or use your laptop and install an external monitor. Get a comfy chair, too. Remember, you dont have to invest in the most high-tech, expensive equipment. Just make sure the set-up does not interfere with your play.

Get Acquainted With Online Poker Tools

One major difference in playing online is that you get to use third-party software to enhance your decision-making skills. While not all sites are allowing these tools, some do, and it would be great if you have proper knowledge on how to use them. Do your homework. There are a lot of online resources regarding poker tools like Holdem Manager, Poker Tracker, PIOSolver and Simple Postflop. All you have to do is to study, practice, and learn.

Seven Types of Bets You Can Make In Poker – Poker News – CardPlayer.com

As a beginner in the poker world, youd be forgiven for thinking that all the bets in poker are one and the same.

But theyre not!

In fact, there are as many types of bets in poker as there are many forms of the game itself. If you can understand and master how each of these betting types works, you can rest assured that youve just safeguarded your chances of winning against any poker opponent. But, of course, where will you find this information?

You might spend the whole day scouring the internet or skimming through books. Luckily for you, weve done the heavy lifting, and weve come up with this guide. Here you will find all the types of poker bets that are there. Read till the end, and make sure you know each one like the back of your hand before you proceed to a poker online site like omiqq to gamble your money.

Donk bet

Normally in poker, when someone sees that the guy in the pre-flop is playing aggressively, they let them continue to do so regardless of how good their own hand might be on the flop.

In contrast, a donk bettor does the opposite of this.

Donk betting in poker refers to a situation whereby a player bets into the raiser instead of checking to them. As the name might have hinted you, it is really not a smart type of betting. Although some pro players use it on specific occasions to counter aggressive opponents, donk betting is really not a safe way to play in the long-term.

Continuation bet (C-bet)

In poker, when a player raises before the flop, theyll almost always continue to represent a strong hand by betting on the flop as well. This is known as a continuation bet, and it is one of the most common types of bet in all of poker.

Continuation betting the flop after raising pre-flop is something that even inexperienced players do. This gives you a chance to put more pressure on your opponent and win the pot right then and there regardless of your particular hand strength. The main idea behind c-betting is that the other player is unlikely to have connected with the flop, so theyll often release their hand without any resistance.

Overbet

Properly sizing your bets in poker is very important as experienced players make their decisions based on pure mathematics. In general, you want to size your bets in relation to the pot, and, for the most part, you dont want to bet more chips than whats already in the middle.

Underbet

When youre trying to calculate the right size for your bet, you want to make it in relation to the size of the pot. Usually, betting something around half the pot is a good amount, as it gives you an opportunity to continue building the pot when you have a hand but also puts your opponent to a decision as to whether or not they want to continue.

Just like you usually dont want to bet huge, betting very small is also not a typical play. This is whats known as underbet, and it doesnt really achieve those two goals from the previous paragraph.

Three-bet (re-raise)

When one player raises and another player re-raises, this is known as a 3-bet. This can happen both pre-flop and on later streets. Usually, a 3-bet signals strength as the 3-betting player is coming over the top of the initial opener, showing theyre willing to commit more chips to the pot.

Value Bet

There are typically two reasons for betting in poker. Youre either betting to get your opponent to fold (bluffing), or youre betting because you have what you believe is the best hand and want them to call. The latter scenario describes whats known as a value bet.

Pot Bet

As mentioned in some of the previous poker bet types, your bets usually represent a certain percentage of the pot (be it 30%, 50%, or 70%, etc.). Sometimes, though, you might just want to bet the exact amount of chips that are in the middle. This is known as a pot bet or a pot-sized bet.

Kami Hudson Finds Satisfaction In Poker, Happiness In Honduras – PocketFives

When Las Vegas-based poker pro Kami Hudson decides to do something she tends to go full out.

From her morning meditation routine clearing her head, setting her intentions, and getting active to grinding online, Hudsons approach to all of her passions is one of positivity and going for it.

Im a big believer in positive thinking and in poker and in life I do my best to look on the bright side of things.

And theres been plenty to be positive about for Hudson, who plays on WSOP.com under the screen name Loco4coco, when it comes to her poker career. More specifically, her positivity helped her in her recent victory in the World Series of Poker $320 Online Circuit Season Finale NLHE event in which she took home her first career gold ring and a payday of over $50,000.

I was really excited to win a ring, Hudson said. As all MTT players know, it isnt easy to win a tournament, and all of the close calls can really start to wear on you.

Hudson had been tracking down a WSOP Circuit ring for years, making three final tables over the past three years in various WSOPC events. She also bubbled a WSOP final table in 2017, finishing in 10th place in a $1,500 event for over $23,000. But those close calls just encouraged her press forward.

Yes, Ive had a lot of close calls and have been close to winning several events, but instead of letting that get me down, I use it as motivation and look at it as a sign that I am growing, she said. I dont look at it as a failure but instead as improvement and that I must be doing a lot of things right to get so deep and close.

Hudson, who grew up in Oklahoma and earned her degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma, has always found herself drawn to pursuits that lend themselves to success in the game.

As a kid growing up and throughout my entire life I have always been curious and inquisitive, into playing games, solving various kinds of puzzles, and super interested in studying people and the psychology behind everything I encounter, she said. Ive been around a poker environment since the age of 18 and thats how I began picking it up. In the beginning, it was more of just a hobby and it wasnt until about four years ago I became more interested in it and started taking it more seriously.

At the same time that Hudson first encountered poker, she also was introduced to another life passion. In her first year of college, she was invited to go on a trip to Honduras to visit and work with an orphanage.

From that very first trip, I fell in love with the people and the place, and the rest is history, she said. Those kids broke my heart wide open and change my entire life in the best ways possible. Thirteen years and twenty trips later, it has become my biggest passion.

Hudson isnt a part of an organization, its a personal endeavor that she at first shared with a friend but now has now extended to her entire family including her parents and sisters. Projects for the orphanage have included installing an entire water purifying system, purchasing a new playground, fixing up the building, providing greater security and essential items like bedding and pillows for the children.

But the biggest thing I have a heart for, the type of service most important to me, is investing my time and energy into the children emotionally and mentally, she said. After her first trip, she immediately started learning Spanish so she could better connect with the kids. I spend a lot of my time there sitting with the kids and communicating about life and their goals and what we can do to accomplish their dreams.

Each time I leave, I leave a piece of my heart there, but at least I know I leave with them knowing that they are loved, brave, smart and that people believe in them, she said. My days there are spent laughing, crying, playing, building, teaching, learning, starting and keeping traditions, showing consistency, capturing the good times on camera so that they can have photos of a happy childhood with people who love them with people who love them, and making memories with some of the most beautiful people on the planet.

I know it might not look like much to some people but to these kids, it might be the first time a person has been a constant source of love and support in their life.

That love and support, when at its best, is a two-way street. Hudson not only has had the opportunity to change the lives of children in desperate need but in return, she found love and purpose in her own life.

I will never forget the time I heard one of my little 6-year-olds praying before dinner, and she prayed for the lives and health of her mother and father, who she had never met, and then followed that with all of the things she was grateful for. That hit me hard, Hudson said. Those kids have changed my life, they have given me so much. I will never be able to repay them, but I will continuously return to them, over and over, to do all that I can to try.

Hudson credits her current life as a poker pro with giving her the flexible schedule and free time to continually support the orphanage and the kids. She has plans on returning to Honduras at some point after her current World Series of Poker grind.

I plan on playing the majority of the WSOP.com/USA event because I think they are amazing value, she said, noting that one of the reasons she originally moved to Las Vegas was to have access to these types of events. I do intend to travel to Mexico to play some of the [GGPoker] events next month, but mainly the $1Ks and lower. Winning an online bracelet would be a great accomplishment but I dont think I will feel fully satisfied until I win one live.

For Hudson though, satisfaction in poker is one thing while the definition of success is another.

We all have our definitions of success, she said. Success and happiness are relative. One of the biggest lessons my kids in Honduras have taught me is that happiness isnt based on material things. Because despite not having money or many material items, they are so much happier than the majority of people I know who society would consider being rich.In my opinion, the key to happiness and success is being grateful for what you have and always doing the best you can with what you know at the time.

Panicking Professional Poker Player Suddenly Cant Remember Whether Ace Is Better Than King – The Onion

LAS VEGASFeeling completely helpless while staring down at his cards, professional poker player Tony Eggold reportedly began to panic Thursday after suddenly realizing he couldnt remember whether an ace was better than a king. Okay, okay focusI have $147,000 in the pot right now, so Ive got to figure this out fast, said Eggold, whose eyes darted anxiously between the two cards as he struggled to decipher whether the ace of hearts in his hand was lower than a king because its not a monarch or higher than a king because of alphabetical order. Someone said deuce is wild at one point, does that factor in at all? Shit. This is not good. Come on, Tony, youve been doing this for years. Just think, dammit. Its got to be either higher or lower. Unless theyre equal? Fuck. Maybe I could just ask someone. At press time, Eggold was even more frustrated after the player beside him admitted he didnt know the answer either.

Dennis Atkins: The stakes couldnt be higher in PMs poker game with China – The New Daily

The Australia-China relationship has never been hotter than right now.

The list of areas of dispute, potentially harmful economic interactions and direct diplomatic and strategic tension is long and growing.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has made contentious and confrontational announcements and commentary in respect of China every week since late June, from warnings of cyber attacks, a massive realignment of defence strategy clearly aimed at the Middle Kingdom and, just days ago, tough-talking pushback against new security laws in Hong Kong.

Theres every reason to call China out for a range of economic, strategic and societal hard-line activity, but the way Australia is standing up to its largest trading partner is without precedent.

Its easy to see why Morrison is doing this he understands Chinas standing among those quiet Australians he wraps himself around is toxic.

Australians blame China for the coronavirus pandemic and see the country as a threat to our interests whether theyre strategic, economic or something as simple as using a digital device.

The short-term politics at play might work to Morrisons benefit but whether megaphone diplomacy and envelope-pushing military posturing are in our long term interest is doubtful and possibly dangerous.

The Labor Opposition has been cautious but a long-form essay from the partys foreign affairs spokeswoman, Penny Wong, issues a string of warnings of what is at stake in this diplomatic version of Texas Hold Em.

Wongs essay, The End of Orthodoxy, to be published on Monday in Australian Foreign Affairs, has a number of clear-eyed observations.

Four stand out as vital for the immediate and medium-term.

First, and most importantly, Australia should avoid getting caught in the slipstream of big power rivalry between China and the United States, with 30-year horizons and not three-year domestic political cycles.

Second, we should not just concentrate on the coronavirus and its economic fallout but also keep our eye on climate change, which Wong identifies as the next pandemic.

Third, we have to work twice as hard to promote and nurture multilateralism a multilateralism that works for the post-COVID era and for the global challenges that lie ahead.

Finally, Wong rings a loud bell on the dangers facing our nearest Asian neighbour, Indonesia, which she says may be at risk of foundering.

Wongs warning on Indonesias outlook highlights the failure of the Morrison Government to pay enough attention to our northern neighbour at a critical time.

Morrison had a bilateral phone hook up with Joko Widodo (following a visit by the Indonesian President just weeks before COVID-19 changed everything) but this was mainly focused on the new economic and trade deal which came into force last weekend.

Wong takes a much broader view, looking at the risk of financial contagion for Indonesia, which she says is particularly acute and for which the country is not prepared.

Australia and the region cannot afford for Indonesia to founder, and we must stand ready to assist it, she writes.

Noting Australias stability and prosperity rely on a stable and prosperous South-East Asia, Wong cautions that few ASEAN member-states have the resources to deal comprehensively with the health and economic effects of the pandemic.

The pandemic may lead to humanitarian, economic and internal security crises with serious ramifications for the wider stability of the region.

On the related issues of the heightened tensions between China and the US and the weakening of multilateralism, Wong points to opportunities for Australia to take a regional and global lead in working around the roadblocks of great power competition.

She says none of the most pressing issues in this complex environment is simple but all require a more active foreign policy and a deeper investment in our diplomacy and the recognition that Australia needs to be more self-reliant in protecting and promoting our interests.

Wongs toughest language still couched in the measured words of diplomacy is a clear shot at the way Morrison has been playing politics with international relations, especially as they apply to China and the region.

Public interventions and rhetorical grenades designed to gain attention or tactical advantage serve little purpose, and distract from the far more challenging task at hand, writes Wong.

Put simply, we dont have time for negative globalism. We need to think about 30-year horizons, not three-year election cycles.

The global disruption in recent years has already generated sharp domestic debate about foreign policy. It will be even more difficult to confront change of the magnitude we now face. It can generate resistance and denial.

Wong concludes with a note of hope that Australia can meet the challenge for a new foreign policy ambition, based on consistency and discipline.

The question now for Wong and Labor is whether they are happy offering sober, nuanced commentary as pointed as it is in this essay or should they take the fight up to the Morrison Government.

Many in senior Labor ranks believe Morrison is winning the politics and what is needed is a loud effort to call out his naked opportunism.

Wongs essay is but the first step on meeting this challenge.

Pat McAfee Won $1,400 in an Underground Poker Game and Used It to Make His NFL Dream Come True – Sportscasting

Pat McAfee was the best punter and onside kick artist in the entire NFL during his prime. He played eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and made two Pro Bowls during his NFL career. His path to becoming a professional kicker is one of the most unique youll ever hear, too. If not for a $1,400 win in an underground poker game in high school, McAfee wouldve never even made it to the NFL.

RELATED: The Indianapolis Colts Just Signed T.Y Hiltons Potential Replacement

As a high school senior, Pat McAfee wasnt garnering much attention from Division I football programs. He was quite a talented soccer player, so he had far more options to continue his athletic career on the pitch at the next level.

Although he was a more coveted soccer star, McAfee had a special passion for football. He was about to accept his only Division I offer from Kent State until a unique opportunity arose his senior year.

As signing day quickly approached, McAfee got invited to a kicking camp in Florida. The only problem was the trip was too expensive. McAfees parents wouldnt put up the $1,500 to send him to the camp, so he took the situation into his own hands.

McAfee borrowed $100 from a friend and joined an underground poker game. After winning a massive hand with a full house, he walked out of the room with $1,400. With a $100 addition from his parents, McAfee was on his way to Florida.

RELATED: Pat McAfee Has Continued to Earn a Nice Living Since Retiring From the NFL

Before miraculously winning enough money to send himself to the prestigious kicking camp, McAfee was unsure if he was even going to play football in college.

That changed within a span of 24 hours. McAfee arrived at the camp and made nine straight field goals, including a 60- and a 65-yarder. The only kick McAfee missed was from 70 yards out.

McAfee left the camp feeling good about his performance, but he didnt expect his life to change in a matter of hours. The next day, West Virginias recruiting coordinator visited McAfee at his high school and offered him a scholarship on the spot.

McAfee went on to have a brilliant kicking career at West Virginia, and he was later drafted by the Colts in 2009. The rest is history.

RELATED: Pat McAfee Is the Perfect Choice to Replace Booger on Monday Night Football

Pat McAfees career wouldnt have been possible without a couple of ifs going his way. If he wasnt drafted by the Colts in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft, he mightve never made an NFL roster. If he didnt make nine straight field goals at a scouting camp in high school, he would have never gone to West Virginia.

And if McAfee didnt draw pocket jacks in that poker game, he never wouldve won the hand that changed his life.

The full house McAfee drew that day might be the only reason he was eventually able to make it to the NFL.

The Rise and Fall of Dani Stern – HighstakesDB

Dani AnskyStern is one of the true legends of online poker. His meteoric rise to stardom during the poker boom saw him recognised as one of the best cash game players on the planet.

By: Mark Patrickson

Like any stars career there have been good times and bad times. Fortunately for Stern, he has seen far much more of the upside.

The 33-year-old has been one of the most vocal high stakes players over the years, particularly when Amaya took an axe to the PokerStars players benefits. But his opinions have always been respected as he became a driving voice in the community.

Lets take a look over Sterns career as he built up his reputation as a feared NL Holdem player on partypoker in the pre-UIGEA era to playing nosebleed PLO games against the best in the world.

While Stern made his real money during the Moneymaker boom years, and was already known by anyone who matters, he became a poker household name after appearing on the TV show Two Months, Two Million in 2009.

Hooking up with his pals Jay Rosenkrantz, Emil Patel, and Brian Roberts, the quartet were on a mission to win $2 million in two months under the gaze of the TV cameras.

The scene was set in a swish house in Las Vegas with the guys showing the world just what was possible in the poker boom.

Ultimately they were unsuccessful, only accumulating $676,000 with Sterns share being $100,800.

Even with the mission failure Stern was now firmly on the map as a star.

In the pre-Black Friday poker world Stern was one of the pioneers of new aggressive strategies as players got to grips with a fast-evolving game. His in-depth strategy posts on TwoPlusTwo coupled with videos on the Deucescracked training site made him one of the most sought after coaches in the business.

His playing career back then saw him as one of the regs in the $200/$400 NLHE and PLO games, netting millions of dollars.

When Black Friday hit most players were affected with the shift to much tougher games. It took a while before everyone adjusted to the new reality and Sterns experience was no different.

Playing from Toronto, Canada, and Mexico, Stern was forced to accept the new paradigm where he was no longer crushing the nosebleed stakes. According to his HSDB bio the games were simply too tough and the variance was just insane.

Like any true professional Stern followed the same advice he would have given many times to his students and dropped down stakes in order to reassess and gain some comfort. He became a super reg in the $5/$10 and $10/$20 PLO games for the next 2-3 years, crushing almost anyone in his path.

At this point it was time to try his hand at the nosebleeds once more.

The graphs for Sterns PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker account show a combined $1.7 million in losses, but this doesnt tell the whole story. It isnt clear exactly what the situation is for any unknown accounts on untracked sites.

Something that was reported extensively was the huge losses to unknown Swedish PLO specialist BERRI SWEET. This no doubt contributes heavily for most of the losses in the following results.

Stern also has a respectable record in the tournament scene. Both live and online. The HendonMob website shows a tidy $3.7 million in live winnings and he has also picked up $2 million online.

Being comfortable in both formats of the game is the mark of a great player.

Outside of his playing career Stern was very vocal on TwoPlusTwo about changes in the game. The poor timing of the discontinuation of the Supernova Elite VIP scheme on PokerStars led to an almighty uproar about an abuse of market position.

PokerStars pulled the rug out from under many players who had grinded insane volume for 10 months of the year only to find out that they would not receive what they had worked so hard for.

Stars such as Ike Haxton refused to renew their ambassadorship contracts and publicly criticised PokerStars for poor treatment of their customers.

Stern took to TwoPlusTwo to vent his fury and organised a boycott with many professionals refusing to log on for a period of time. He even attended a meeting with PokerStars execs to try and thrash out an agreement not to move forward with the changes, but to no avail.

The following year, clearly no longer a fan of what poker had to offer he decided to step away from the game for good.

No doubt with millions still in the bank and about to turn 33-years-old it was a good time to walk away and seek new challenges.

The poker community is no doubt poorer for Sterns absence. His strength of character backed up with integrity is sorely missed.

Looking to Join the PA Online Poker Party: partypoker Nearing Regulatory Approval – Play Pennsylvania

A second online poker operator partypoker PA is likely for Pennsylvania as early as August, breaking the monopoly PokerStars has enjoyed in the market since November of 2019.

Party Poker is a player favorite internationally and the second-biggest online poker operator. The partypoker platform, now owned by GVC Holdings, is already in use in New Jersey. For three years running (2017-2019), partypoker has won the title of Poker Operator of the Year at the EGR Operator Awards.

MGM and GVCs joint online gambling company,ROAR Digital, operates as BetMGM in the US. That company also includes the partypoker site in New Jersey.

ROAR, also the operator of partypoker PA, may have its license approved as soon as Aug. 5, the next meeting of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).

Thats according to Cyrus Pitre, Chief Enforcement Counsel for the PGCB, during Wednesdays monthly Board meeting.

If it doesnt come on that date, it shouldnt be long after.

And a third operator, WSOP.com could follow soon afterward.

Caesars Interactive Entertainment, which owns WSOP.com, has had approval from the PGCB since February 2020, but its online software provider, 888, has yet to get approved in PA. But 888 is already approved by gaming regulators in New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware.

Rebecca McAdam Willetts, PokerStars Associate Director of Public Relations has welcomed the anticipated competition:

Looking to the future, we welcome the competition. Our goal has always been to promote poker as a safe, social, and exciting way to sit down with friends at the table for a bit of competition at any stakes. As the market expands, so too will awareness of regulated online poker. Thats how we sustain the game well into the future.

The eventual increase to three and eventually more online poker rooms in PA will only grow the healthy market even more. Players will have more tournament and game options, plus more sign-up bonuses and promotions. Operators will have to compete for market share, which should benefit the players. Plus, states like neighboring NJ have shown that theres room in the market for multiple operators.

Furthermore, if PA eventually joins the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, it would mean a huge boost to player pools and thus tournament prize pools for not only PA players, but those in NJ, Nevada, and Delaware as well. The latter three already share player pools per the agreement, and there is speculation that PA regulators may follow suit.

But a resolution of the Wire Act case may need to come first. At present, PA gambling law requires separate servers to be located in PA. But it doesnt rule out the possibility for interstate player pooling.

Even without that shared pool yet in place, PA has jumped to the top of the pile in terms of monthly online poker revenue in the US. Since launching in November, PA has posted the highest revenue each month (through May), except for March. In March, NJ surpassed it by less than $500,000 albeit with three operators vs. PAs one.

The testing of the partypoker platform by the PGCB has already begun. Also under review is the BetMGM app, which will include interactive slots and table games.

ROAR Digital has invested $450 million in the PA rollouts. ROARs network hosts its own partypoker-branded online poker room along with poker rooms under the BetMGM and Borgata Poker brands.
