We have completely streamlined the merchant integration process by removing non-value added activities," said Clayton Moore CEO & Founder, NetCents Technology Inc.

Another prominent feature of the NetCents' platform is the company's AI 2.0 proprietary processing algorithm, pre-validation of transactions before the final transaction is processed with the merchant. Every Entrepreneur Needs Flow. Nootropics Can Get You There. – Entrepreneur

Weve all savored being in the zone: creative thoughts flow from brain to fingertips, timelessness, perhaps even an experience of euphoria. This elevated state of consciousness is the secret behind many outstanding athletes, daredevils, artists and entrepreneurs. It has a name -- flow -- given to it by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.

You can harness thepower of flow.

Entrepreneurs trying to break the status quo need to be better than average. Innovations and breakthroughs arent exclusivelythe result of hard work and hustle, especially as machines and computers take over monotonous tasks. Entrepreneurs need creativity to excel and develop new technologies.

Sixty percent of CEOspolled by IBM ranked creativity as the most important leadership quality. Entrepreneurs seeking flow must have the right environment and lifestyle habits but there are nootropics (aka cognitive enhancers) that can change the biochemistry of our brain to achieve flow more easily.

Related:The Happiest People Know Their 'Flow State.' What's Yours?

Since Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi labeled and analyzed flow states, it has become a hot topic for performance enhancement.

As Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheals book, Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, the Navy SEALs, and Maverick Scientists Are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work shows, high performance individuals are using flow enhancing techniques across the board. These mental states are the objective of high performers from Sergey Brin and Google executives to elite special forces.

The benefits of achieving flow states are manifold. Military researchers found that flow states can increase learning ability up to 230 percentin novice snipers. McKinsey researchers studied top executives for 10 years and found they were five times more productive in flow states.

Imagine working on a business venture with fivetimes the productivity and the ability to learn new materials 230 percentquicker than your competition. That alone would make flow states advantageous, but the true benefit is for creativity.

In 2013, phase one of the Red Bull Hacking Creativity Project started as a joint effort between MIT Media Lab, a group of TED fellowsand other flow experts to better understand creativity and flow states.

In late 2016, after reviewing more than 30,000research papers and interviewing hundreds of subject-matter experts, the project reached two conclusions. First, creativity is essential for solving complex problems. Second, creativity is less of a skill and more of a state of mind: i.e: a flow state.

Oliver Braithwaite, founder of the private tuition company Stars & Catz Teacher Network, said: Many of our students are executives who wish to take up a musical instrument to take their minds off work, de-stress and be creative. In part, what theyre seeking is actually a state of flow, where all other thoughts are suspended, stress drops away and creativity kicks in. Personally, as both an entrepreneur and a musician, Im aware that my most creative and effective work comes when enjoyment, creativity and focus coexist. Thats how Id define being in flow.

Related:How to Achieve aStateof Total Concentration

If flow states were easy to achieve, wed all be using them nonstop. There are environmental, psychologicaland emotional factors that affect to our ability to achieve flow regularly.

As new evidence and technologies come online, we better understand the neurochemistry of flow states and how to achieve it, including through supplements.Steven Kotler, author and flow researcher, recounted a simple flow hack using many commonly found techniques.

20 - 25 minute jog to release endorphins.

A cup of coffee -- caffeine for brain chemicals called dopamine and norepinephrine.

Marijuana -- THC provides a chemical called anandamide used for lateral thinking.

According to Kotler, this essentially mimics the neurochemistry of a flow states. It isnt sustainable, but it is a quick hack into this mental space (assuming you live in a part of the world where THC is legal).

Aside from this clearly defined formula, there are a host of other substances utilized for creativity and achieving flow.

The term entheogen refers to psychoactive compounds, including LSD, psilocybin and mescaline, among others. Literally meaning generating the divine within, these compounds have been used in traditional cultures for thousands of years.

Even though many are illegal in the western world, entheogens like LSD and psilocybin are experiencing a resurgence of interest and research. Before these substances were made illegal, researcher James Fadiman conducted experiments using entheogens to enhance problem solving.

Within the experiment, 27 individuals (including engineers, mathematicians, architects, and engineer-physicists) were told to bring a problem they had been struggling with for months. Using small doses of mescaline, 44 percentof the cohort found breakthrough solutions (including patents and tangible technologies).

Entheogenic compounds have gone unstudied for decades, but the newfound interest is already bearing fruit. A brain imaging study conducted at Imperial College London by Dr. Carhart-Harris suggests regions of the brain associated with creativity are affected under the influence of entheogenic compounds.

From Silicon Valley to Wall Street, top executives are microdosing psychedelics to produce flow states, hack creativity, and produce breakthrough innovations. While these compounds are still illegal, there is some hope that will change over time.

The drawback to nootropics and cognitive enhancers isthe lack of scientific evidence and minefield of snake oil salesman. Many of the purported smart drugs are no more useful than the placebo effect while others come with unnecessary side effects.

Self experimentation becomes key for entrepreneurs trying to enhance flow states and creativity. When I visited the Peak Brain Institute in Los Angeles to perform a QEEG brain map, we found a synthetic nootropic called phenylpiracetam enhanced brain waves associated with flow states. Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Hill confirmed the cognitive boost providing empirical evidence this smart drug works for me.

Finding nootropic concoctions to achieve flow states need not be scary, riskyor challenging. For risk averse beginners, simply taking L-theanine (an amino acid found in green tea) with your morning cup of coffee can increase alpha brain waves, which are associated with flow states.

Entrepreneurs servethe world by creatinguseful innovations and technology. To solve global problems, entrepreneurs must be able to achieve more creative flow states and do so more consistently.

Through nootropic supplementation and innovative technologies, we can now achieve flow more readily to create more value and wealth in our businesses.

Buying a boost: Smart drugs on campus – Emerald Media – Oregon Daily Emerald

When Alexis got to the University of Oregon her freshman year, she was introduced to Adderall by someone selling it in her dorm. She went on to use it a couple of times a month for long readings and writing essays, as well as during exam periods.

If I needed to get things done quickly or jam a bunch of info into my head, it would be crazy easy, Alexis said.

Alexis, who asked that her real name not be used because its illegal to possess Adderall without a prescription, is just one of many UO students introduced to prescription stimulants when they come to college. A 2016 study conducted by the University of Maryland reported that 61.8 percent of students are offered prescription stimulants at some point during their college career. The same study found that up to one in five college students reported using those prescription stimulants.

These students take and sell the drug despite the legal risks. Its against the law to sell stimulants or possess them without a prescription. In 2005, a UO student was arrested for selling the drug from his dorm room.

Smart drugs

Nootropics, or smart drugs, are establishing themselves in mainstream society, similar to how athletic performance-enhancing drugs like anabolic steroids grew in popularity and notoriety in the past. The dangers of athletic doping are well documented. In the world of cognitive enhancement, the jury is still out on determining whether taking these drugs are worth the possibility of unknown long-term side effects.

In 1957, businessman Peter Drucker predicted that the most valuable asset of a 21st-century institution, whether business or nonbusiness, will be its knowledge workers and their productivity. This prediction seems to have come true. Knowledge workers, workers whose main capital is knowledge, are increasingly sought after as opposed to service and production employees in the information age that we live in. Many jobs are becoming more automated or outsourced elsewhere.

Unlike previous classes of working people who competed based on physical prowess or through their ability to do repetitive menial tasks, knowledge workers require a different set of skills. Brainpower being able to think critically and creatively to solve complex problems has become the differentiating factor required to succeed in knowledge-based jobs.

Best-selling author and entrepreneur Tim Ferriss explains that in business, The difference between completely failing and losing all of your money, and going home with your tail between your legs, making a million dollars, and making a billion dollars is right here [pointing to his head].

With an increased emphasis on critical thinking and problem solving, it makes sense that people are becoming more interested in cognitive-enhancing substances that hold the promise of potentially increasing focus, motivation, mood, attention and even out-of-the-box thinking ability.

Nootropics encompass a wide array of natural and synthetic drugs, dietary supplements, amino acids and other substances that are said to improve some aspect of cognition. Nootropics range from common and well-studied substances like caffeine and nicotine to pharmaceuticals like Modafinil and Adderall.

Most people are already smart drug users on a daily basis, whether they realize it or not. The FDA estimates that 80 percent of adults in the U.S. use caffeine daily. Caffeine can also improve energy, attention and certain aspects of memory.

Caffeine seems to be enough of a kick for most, though stronger stimulants such as Adderall or Ritalin Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder drugs make common appearances as study drugs on college campuses.

Potential Danger

Adderall increases dopamine levels in the brain, hitting the pleasure centers such as the ventral tegmental area and the nucleus accumbens to elevate mood, focus and vigilance.

That 10-page paper thats due tomorrow morning might be enough of a temptation for a student to take Adderall in an attempt to pull an all-nighter and get more done in less time. While Adderall may help in the short run, its side effects can include insomnia and loss of appetite, and consistent use can cause withdrawal symptoms.

For Alexis, the benefits of using Adderall came at a high price.

A side effect Ive had nearly every time Ive used it is a nasty comedown I get a really lonely and depressing feeling for a couple of hours after it wears off.

According to university physician Dr. Anna Hejinian, Adderall is a Schedule II drug the same category as cocaine and methamphetamine. The FDA classifies medications as Schedule II if they have a high abuse potential, leading to possibly severe psychological or physical dependence. Despite the problems with drugs classified in Schedule II, these medications still have effective medical uses, according to the FDA.

The process of filling a prescription for Adderall and other prescription psychostimulants is similar to the opioid painkillers Vicodin and Oxycontin, Hejinian says. In order to get legally prescribed ADHD medications, Hejinian explained that patients must undergo rigorous testing to determine whether they really have ADHD.

Because its so time intensive, the health center doesnt usually prescribe for or diagnose ADHD, Hejinian says.

Its illegal to the point where you could be in jail if you offer these medicines [prescription stimulants] to someone else for their use, she said.

Alternatives

There are other cognitive-enhancing pharmaceutical alternatives to amphetamines, such as Modafinil, a wakefulness-promoting drug (not a traditional stimulant) prescribed to counter fatigue in conditions such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea. While commonly studied in sleep-deprived individuals, recent studies have shown benefits in healthy subjects. Twenty-six percent of students at Oxford University had taken the drug, according to a campus newspaper survey in 2014, and many professionals already use Modafinil in an effort to enhance their performance. Modafinil, a Schedule IV drug, has gentler side effects than ADHD stimulants.

Dave Asprey is an entrepreneur and founder of Bulletproof, a lifestyle brand that sells coffee and supplements engineered to improve performance. He went on CNN and ABC Nightline to publicly discuss the impact of Modafinil in his life. He gives the drug credit for allowing him to work full-time at a startup that sold for $600 million, while getting an MBA from Wharton.

One reason I like [Modafinil] is that it shares many of the benefits other stimulants do, without the addiction or withdrawal, Asprey said. Modafinil is a prescription drug though, so you will need to talk to a physician to obtain it.

Modafinil is compared to the fictional NZT-48 pill that Bradley Coopers character takes in the movie Limitless. In the movie, Coopers character is a disheveled bachelor with writers block who starts taking the pill and is able to quickly finish a novel, learn multiple foreign languages and make millions trading stocks.

A review paper found that Modafinil improves decision making, planning ability and performance on lengthy tasks. Anna-Katharine Brem, a co-author of the study, stated, In the face of vanishingly few side effects in these controlled environments, Modafinil can be considered a cognitive enhancer.

While smart drugs steal the show and gain lots of media coverage, natural substances can also enhance brain performance. Vitamins and minerals are essential for healthy brain function. Vitamin B12 deficiencies can cause cognitive difficulties and memory issues, and can even result in severe depression and paranoia in extremely deficient individuals. Low vitamin D levels can result in as much as twice the cognitive impairment as compared to people with optimal levels, according to a recent study.

Steven Fowkes, an organic chemist and founder of the Cognitive Enhancement Research Institute, said fixing nutritional deficiencies can result in the same effects that a drug delivers.

The first place to start is with B-complex vitamins. See if theres an objective increase in cognitive performance, said Fowkes.

This approach, working from the ground up to improve our neurochemistry, is a safer and potentially more impactful option than taking pharmaceuticals that carry risks.

Asprey said exercise, sleep, and nutrition are bigger levers than drugs.

While popping a pill is much easier than developing a healthy lifestyle to increase your brainpower, it might not be the most effective choice.

An Uncertain Verdict

Smart drugs also carry risks, many of which are not well-studied in humans, and the long-term side effects have not been determined in many of these substances. Smart drug usage certainly presents ethical dilemmas. Some argue that smart drugs, like doping in sports, provide an unfair advantage. People might feel compelled to take smart drugs if their co-workers and classmates are taking them and doing better as a result.

Smart drugs and other cognitive enhancing substances offer the possibility of altering human cognition. A radical leap ahead in human consciousness is possible in the ever-expanding world of nootropics, although weighing the rewards with the risks of taking cognitive enhancers is a necessary component.

Nootrobox is now HVMN and will sell biohacking products beyond nootropics – TechCrunch

If none of whats in the above headline makes sense, you probably havent been following the biohacking trend for the last couple of years. But Silicon Valley is brimming with tech execs trying to become faster, stronger and smarter by hacking their genetic code through various experimental methods called biohacks.

These would be the people drinking buttered coffee, taking cold showers and not eating every other day not because of some psychological disorder but because they believe caloric restriction will turn on certain genes to help them live longer.

HVMN (formerly Nootrobox and pronounced human) has been peddling a form of biohacking with something called nootropic supplements since its launch in 2014. These supplements are meant to help the brain become more productive. Sort of. Think the movie Limitless where Bradley Cooper takes a pill that makes him become the smartest man alive. Does it work? Maybe (you dont gain magical smartest-man-alive powers, but it might help you focus). And theres some debate on safety right now, depending on the ingredients. But the pills HVMN sells seem to be FDA OK so far.

The startup now wants to go deeper into the matrix by offering more biohacking products and felt a name fitting the change was appropriate.

The way we talk about the space is we consider the human body is the next platform, says co-founder Geoffrey Woo. Renaming our company HVMN is reallyreflective of that, its like a human 2.0.

His company will start to developboth metabolic performance products and products to do what he calls closing the loop. Its not clear what he intends to do by that as he didnt want to name any specific products just yet. However, Woo did mention a lot of experiments with sensors.

HVMNs team of 12, including the two co-founders, also will be experimenting with various methods and utilizing these sensors to get ideas of what to put out in the market next.

Employees already participate in up to 60 hours of intermittent fasting every week. Some start to fast on Sunday, breaking Tuesday evening, while others skip meals on Monday, breaking bread with the team the following work day. Woo and his partner Michael Brandt were actually fasting as they spoke to me over the phone about the changes to their company going forward.

You really start to see benefits beyond 20 hours, Brandt explained. You can track your biomarkers from the things Geoff has mentioned. And its manageable. Ive been fasting every week for a year and a half.

You cant sell fasting as a product, of course, but you can sell the biohacker lifestyle through books, podcasts and other methods like Tim Ferris and Dave Asprey from Bulletproof have done. Asprey, for instance, sells his own brand of specialized coffee and other products he promotes through various online channels.

So far HVMN has created a brand around its special pills, but its hard to tell right now what the name change and addition of other products will do for the company. The biohacker space is not low on gurus touting their methods, and HVMN may not be able to rise above the din.

Theres also a snake oil stigma attached to the industry, often overlooked by the FDA. The various pills, oils (and coffees) out on the market can get expensive, and a lot of the claims out there need regular Snopes checks to protect consumers from getting suckered.

HVMN says its doubling down on internal research and has just hired former rowing world champion Dr. Brianna Stubbs to lead in those efforts.

We see the opportunity here that we think our express goal is to make everyone a biohacker in the same sense that Nike says everyone is an athlete, Woo told TechCrunch. This is the next natural trend and everyone is going to be a biohacker.

Duke Neuroscientist: Brain Augmentation Will Allow Us to Make a New Kind of Human – Futurism

Believe The Hype?

Brain augmentation is a hot topic; from nootropics, to brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), and even implants designed to restore movement to those with paralysis. But how much of the buzz is just hype? To find out, Edd Gent of SingularityHub interviewed Duke University neuroscientist Mikhail Lebedev, who works on brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) and has recently won a $100,000 prize for his work in brain augmentation.

Lebedev thinks we will see both realistic visual prostheses and technologies for the rehabilitation of patients withspinal cord injury and stroke within the next 10 years. Further advances like the ability to type directly from your brain to a screen using implanted electrodes will take more time perhaps 20 years. And Lebedev thinks itll take much longer before were decoding brain activity or free-floating thoughts.

When it comes to augmenting brain function, almost anything is potentially possible. Sensors can be added to the brain, interacting with sensory functions. Lebedev cites adding a sensor of electromagnetic fields or visual sensors around the heads perimeter for panoramic vision as examples.

Current research into micro-stimulation of the brain seems to show that its possible to suppress some processing steps not really to enhance function, Lebedev points out. However, he also points out that suppression can itself be helpful, like when the brain is producing biased responses rather than useful solutions.

There are several basic areas of brain augmentation work currently happening: non-invasive tactics such as electroencephalogram (EEG) systems, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIR); invasive approaches such as BCIs, implants, and BMIs; pharmacological approaches such as nootropics and molecular drug treatments; and genetic approaches such as optogenetics and implanted neurons. There is sometimes even significant overlap between some of these areas, and as technologies advance, we may see these categories bleeding together even more.

While access to technology is always a concern, Lebedev points out that continued discovery will always help the problem. Further development tends to make technologies cheaper and more accessible to everyone. (We can see an example of this happening as blockchain and access to cell phones is fostering opportunities in developing countries where infrastructure for landlines was never created.)

And while there are risks that will come with more advanced brain augmentation technologies as there are with any breakthrough tech Lebedev has a positive outlook on what the future may hold, Im optimistic, so I see mostly upsides. We really want to improve; we want to become less primitive people.

Medical Q&A: So-called smart drugs can turn out to be a dumb idea – Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Q: What are nootropic drugs, and do they really boost brainpower?

A: Cognition-enhancing drugs known as nootropics some prescription, some over-the-counter, others available on a worldwide gray market of private sellers are said to improve memory, attention, creativity and motivation.

The word "nootropic" was coined in 1972 by a Romanian scientist, Corneliu Giurgea, who combined the Greek words for "mind" and "bending." Caffeine and nicotine can be considered mild nootropics, while prescription Ritalin, Adderall and Provigil (modafinil, a drug for treating narcolepsy) lie at the far end of the spectrum when prescribed off-label as cognitive enhancers. Even microdosing of LSD is increasingly viewed as a means to greater productivity.

But when aficionados talk about nootropics, they usually refer to substances that have supposedly few side effects and low toxicity. Most often they mean piracetam, which Giurgea first synthesized in 1964 and which is approved for therapeutic use in dozens of countries for use in adults and the elderly. Not so in the United States, however, where officially it can be sold only for research purposes.

Piracetam is well studied and is credited by its users with boosting their memory, sharpening their focus, heightening their immune system, even bettering their personalities. But it's only one of many formulations in the racetam drug family. Newer ones include aniracetam, phenylpiracetam and oxiracetam. All are available online, where their efficacy and safety are debated and reviewed on message boards and in podcasts.

A number of companies now market nootropic "stacks," or formulas, some of which include piracetam, herbal remedies, amino acids and citicoline, a naturally occurring brain chemical that can be taken orally as a supplement, intravenously or as a shot.

Because they are sold as nutritional supplements and natural products that refrain from making health claims, they avoid close government scrutiny.

"Who doesn't want to maximize their cognitive ability?" asks Murali Doraiswamy, who has led several trials of cognitive enhancers at Duke University Health System and has been an adviser to pharmaceutical and supplement manufacturers as well as the Food and Drug Administration. He attributes the demand to an increasingly knowledge-based society that values mental quickness and agility above all else.

But while some studies have found short-term benefits, Doraiswamy says there is no evidence that what are commonly known as smart drugs of any type improve thinking or productivity over the long run.

"There's a sizable demand, but the hype around efficacy far exceeds available evidence," notes Doraiswamy, adding that, for healthy young people such as Silicon Valley go-getters, "it's a zero-sum game. That's because when you up one circuit in the brain, you're probably impairing another system."

Although piracetam has a history of "relatively few side effects," it has fallen far short of its initial promise for treating any of the illnesses associated with cognitive decline, according to Lon Schneider, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. "We don't use it at all and never have."

As for newer nootropic drugs, there are unknown risks.

"Piracetam has been studied for decades," says cognitive neuroscientist Andrew Hill, the founder of a neurofeedback company in Los Angeles called Peak Brain Institute. But some of the newer compounds "are things that some random editor found in a scientific article, copied the formula down and sent it to China and had a bulk powder developed three months later that they're selling. Please don't take it, people!"

Note: The information provided in this guide was thoroughly researched and referenced.

That said, we are NOT doctorsand you should not take any of this advice or anything we say in this e-book as medical advice.

It is best to consult with your physician priorto taking any supplement.

Weve heard the debates, the arguments, the never-ending questioning of: whats the most important organ in the body?

Weve seen the mixed results: the liver, the heart, and the brain, generally topping the list.

Though we concur that all three are incredibly vital to the bodys internal functioning, we have to side with the big man: the brain.

Whether the brain is truly the most important organ in the body is indeed arguable, but according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, its the most complex[1].

And most of us can probably relate.

No doubt about it, the brain is one powerful organ.

Those little neurons in our brain have the monumental responsibility of sending data from the brain to the rest of our body.

In other words, the brain communicates with other organs in the body by transmitting messages through neurons, which also store information as memories.

Despite its seemingly superhuman strength, the brain can be an exasperating organ as well.

Like when you just want to concentrate on a sole idea, but it keeps bouncing schizophrenically from one thing to the next; or when all you desire is sleep, but it insists on keeping you awake.

At times like these, you might wish for a solution, something atypical to medications and their adverse effects.

At times like these, nootropics may be the answer you seek.

We admit, the word nootropics does have a strangely intimidating yet enticing ring to it.

Noo, sounds ominous, or like a warning.

Tropics, sounds deliciously inviting.

In reality though, nootropics is an umbrella term for a class of substances (some natural, and some synthetic) that provide the human brain with cognitive benefits.

Along with promoting cognitive functions, some nootropics have anti-stress and sleep support properties.

Sounds cool?

It gets even cooler

The psychologist and chemist who invented the word nootropics, Dr. Cornelius E.

Giurgea, attached five criteria a nootropic must have to qualify as such.

Giurgeas requirements can be viewed as protective measures to ensure the substance is produced in a way that shields the brain, instead of harming it.

Clearly, Giurgea put a lot of thought into his criteria.

But when it comes to science, its given that other players will come up with their own observations and proposals.

Still, the general consensus is that nootropics should have a well-developed safety profile and little to zero toxicity.

Any healthy adult seeking to improve his or her mental faculties can become a nootropic user.

In fact, the online nootropics community is made up of mostly healthy individuals looking to use nootropics to attain motivation and more lucid thinking.

An online survey on nootropic usage reveals most of the respondents as males.

The survey targeted people in two of the biggest online nootropics communities: Reddit and LongeCity[2].

Participants were asked to describe their experiences with 31 different substances, and rate them on a scale of 1 10 in terms of effectiveness (1 being not effective at all and 10 being very effective).

Here are the results of that study:

As expected, drugs like Adderall and Modafinil (which really arent even classified as typical Nootropics) rated very highly, while many of the lesser known nootropics rated poorly.

However, what was interested to note was that some of the nootropics, most notably Phenibut and Phenylpiracetam, performed very well, considering theyre available over the counter.

Out of the 162 respondents, 92 percent were males and 8 percent were females.

The average age was 25.

But thats not to say that only youngsters use nootropics.

Remember, the survey interviewed only a designated number of people, and only some responded.

So, somewhere out there are probably hordes of other people adding to the nootropics-user base.

But we will stick to what we can support.

Besides being used by enthusiasts for learning, studying and sharpening their mental firepower, nootropics has been shown to help the elderly and those suffering from brain trauma.

Even Russian astronauts got in on the action, taking nootropics to boost their mental capacities in space.

We know, its tempting to believe, or want to believe, that the benefits of nootropics are the cure to all of our mental problems.

From this belief stems the illusion that nootropics will transform us into geniuses or make us more intelligent.

Lets drop-kick this appalling myth

Nootropics are cognitive enhancers.

What Nootropics CAN Do

What Nootropics CANT Do

They do not improve intelligence or produce blinding brilliance.

They simply boost mental capabilities relating to attention, memory and recall.

For instance, nootropics make it easier to concentrate on tasks and improve productivity.

But they will not automatically turn an average thinker into the next virtuoso philosopher.

They can, however, make him more adept at getting things done.

While were at it, lets slash the myth that nootropics should always produce instant results.

The effectiveness of nootropics varies from one person to the next and depends on a myriad of factors, including weight, body chemistry, sleep patterns and diet.

That said, while some nootropics may work within a few minutes, others may take a few weeks to kick in (Page, n.d.).

First-time nootropic users, especially, should be aware of this.

As we read about the impressive benefits of nootropics on various websites and forums, expectations may be exceedingly high going in.

Not experiencing an effect right away might cause frustration and the feeling that the supplement just doesnt work."Q

But hang in there good things come to those who wait.

Chances are, you have already searched the Internet for the word nootropics and got redirected to a bevy of articles referring to them as smart drugs."Q This can get confusing, as many websites dont explain whether theres a difference between nootropics and smart drugs.

Yet there is a difference[3], according to an article written by Dr. Andrew Hill, lead neuroscientist at truBrain.

In the nootropics community, however, the terms are often used interchangeably.

Since its generally acceptable to label nootropics and smart drugs as one in the same, theres nothing wrong with adopting this trend.

But for the sake of knowledge and accuracy, it pays to know the difference.

Lets set the record straight.

Smart drugs are usually prescribed by doctors to treat symptoms of mental or cognitive disorders.

For instance, Ritalin and Adderall are stimulants used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Smart drugs typically contain stimulants, which boost energy and focus, but can also be detrimental in someone with heart or cardiac issues.

The stimulants in these drugs increase dopamine and norepinephrine levels, which can cause tolerance and dependence, negatively affecting stress levels, appetite, mood and cardiac function.

Smart drugs operate like amphetamines in that they stimulate the brains neurotransmitters to promote focus and alertness, similar to how caffeine operates.

On the flip side, a nootropic is a non-prescribed natural or synthetic compound made from herbs, vitamins and other supplements.

Its designed to increase or safeguard cognition, and when taken properly by a generally healthy individual, typically does not produce side effects.

As Giurgea stated, the objectives of nootropics should always be to promote cognitive abilities and flow, while avoiding the side effects of harsh substances such as stimulants.

Hopefully, this introduction has given you sound insight into the fundamentals of nootropics.

Now its time to dig deeper and discover the different types of nootropics.

What makes nootropics so beautifully unique is that they are largely derived from natural ingredients and come in an extensive array of types.

You might need a checklist to keep track of them all, but heres a tip: tracking them gets easier if you think of them in terms of families."Q

Once you understand the general purpose of the family, what the individual compound does becomes clearer.

Lets begin with the mother of all nootropics

(piracetam, aniracetam, nefiracetam, levetiracetam, pramiracetam, oxiracetam, phenylpiracetam, noopept, and more)

Thats a whole lot of tams, but each has earned the right to be a member of the family.

As the first nootropic ever, piracetam is special.

Had it not been for Giurgea discovering piracetam, the word nootropics would probably not exist he coined the term only after discovering piracetam (Giurgea 1972).

After the development of piracetam, many other racetams emerged, including aniracetam, nefiracetam, levetiracetam, pramiracetam, oxiracetam, phenylpiracetam and noopept.

All racetams have the same basic chemical structure that promotes cognitive enhancement.

They all share a 2-pyrrolidone nucleus, and as derivatives of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are not naturally occurring, but rather chemically synthesized.

Being the first of its kind, piracetam remains the most widely known and researched racetam.

Next on the popularity scale are aniracetam, oxiracetam and pramiracetam.

Best Nootropics for Sale in 2017 | Reviews and Comparison

The word nootropics were created by a Romanian doctor in 1972. He combined two latin words: nous and trepein. Nous stands for mind and trepein means to bend, which is exactly what nootropics do.

Nootropics are so effective because they influence neurochemicals that are already found in the brain. Nootropic supplements work by increasing low levels of hormones and neurotransmitters in our brains which help us improve our cognitive functions by increasing the blood flow and oxygenation in the brain.

This makes our nerve cells more responsive, but they operate in a calm way without causing side effects like nervousness and jitters. In fact, one of the best parts about nootropics is that they are safe to use and that they dont have any side effects.

Nootropic supplements help protect the brain by keeping it safe from chemical and physical injuries. They also improve cognitive abilities and affect areas like memory, energy levels, overall mood, and they can even help people with depression. Nootropics are also used to improve concentration and learning abilities, as well as focus.

When we take a nootropic supplement, we flood our brain with the chemicals it needs to work properly. Once the chemical levels in our brains are optimized, we think more clearly, we have more motivation and energy to cope with the problems of everyday life, and its a general enhancement of a feeling. There are no side effects that could compromise your health, in fact, most nootropic supplements also improve the health of your heart.

There are many types of mental states and diseases, as well as physical problems even doctors cant fix and nootropic supplements are the answer.

How Do Various Nootropics Work? – Serie A Weekly

If you, or more likely your child, have been diagnosed with ADHD, the doctor may have suggested a nootropic. Nootropics are cognitive enhancement drugs. Essentially, theyre drugs that boost memory, focus, and the other mental abilities people need to interact with day to day life. There are a lot of myths about these drugs, so hopefully, youre here to learn.

What Things Are Nootropics?

By and large, nootropics are stimulants. There are things called racetams, but these have questionable effects on the body. Most doctors will stay away from racetams, instead going with something stimulant based.

That said, nootropics dont have to be pharmaceutical grade stimulants. Some stimulants such as caffeine can often work as nootropics, and be capable enough on their own.

How Do Various Nootropics Work?

Caffeine is an excellent example of a mild nootropic. Everyone knows how that works. It helps kick your brain into working, helping you wake up and pay attention. This is exactly what you want in a nootropic!

The next step up is a class of drugs called Eugeroic. These are wakefulness promoters. These work in a similar way to dopamine reuptake inhibitors work. That is, they keep the brain from processing dopamine quite as quickly as it would normally process. This helps keep you awake, and as a side effect improves other cognitive abilities.

The step up from that is Methylphenidate. This is a potent dopamine reuptake inhibitor, keeping the brain from processing the dopamine for a much longer period. This not only helps with cognitive functions but also with mood issues. Doctors have been known to prescribe methylphenidate for depression, though this practice is not commonly used today.

The big guns on the list of nootropics are amphetamines. The most common prescription amphetamine currently is Adderall, though there are other medications. These are not dopamine reuptake inhibitors but instead floods the brain with it. This causes there to be so much more dopamine within the brain that it cant help but process more.

Are Nootropics Dangerous?

The pharmaceutical nootropics can be dangerous, and anyone who says otherwise is lying. Just like too much coffee can cause your heart to race, too much of any stimulant can cause issues. In the case of overdose, people have been known to die of heart attacks.

Also, some people tend to exhibit a style of mania. Because theyre so happy and feeling so high, they start to make poor choices. This is similar to use of the illegal drug cocaine.

And lastly, many studies indicate long-term use in children can stunt a childs growth. Many doctors will suggest waiting until the child is around 12 before prescribing prescription stimulants.

Ultimately, nootropics are a necessary medical substance for many people. While its true they sometimes get abused by those just looking for a good time, individuals with ADHD and other cognitive illnesses need nootropics. It can help them lead a working, fulfilled life. So if your doctor is suggesting one of these drugs, either for you or your child, dont dismiss it out of hand. You might be surprised at what happens!

Best Nootropics Smart Pills – Serie A Weekly

Without a doubt, youve stumbled across the term nootropics somewhere on the internet and wondered what they were. Theyve become one of the hottest trends, driven in popularity by celebrity endorsements that tout claims that theyll enhance your memory and focus, and increase your intelligence. But what exactly are nootropics, and are they beneficial for your cognitive function?

The word itself was coined by a Romanian chemist and psychologist, Dr. Corneliu Giurgea, who was the first to synthesize a nootropic more than 50 years ago. According to Dr. Giurgea, his piracetam was able to enhance learning, disassociate memories to conditions that led to the development of undesirable learned behaviors, protect the brain from chemical injury, and was very low toxicity, thereby producing very limited side effects.

Today, there are a wide variety of nootropics, often grouped in with what is frequently referred to as smart drugs. In actuality, they are a class of supplements, made from both naturally occurring chemicals and synthetic, that are designed to enhance the cognitive functioning of the brain. Theyre often used to help individuals focus and increase attention span, especially as they age, though many college students have begun to use them as study aids.

Unlike real smart drugs, nootropics do not produce the adverse side effects when used long-term. They are safe, posing little risk of any side effects, and are neuroprotective when used as directed.

All nootropics operate by enhancing communication between neurons in the brain, improving neurotransmitter functioning and promoting brain health. There are even some that believe that nootropics stimulate neuron growth, facilitate the formation of synapses in the brain, enhance neuroplasticity, and improve energy metabolism in the brain.

Essentially, your brain is a network of neurons, which are interconnected through pathways called synapses. There are billions of neurons in your brain, and their purpose is to communicate through neurotransmitters, specific chemicals that facilitate the ability to send signals from one neuron to another. When your neurons operate efficiently, you experience better moods, the capacity to process mental work more quickly, longer attention spans for even the most tedious of tasks, and better memory and concentration.

Supplementation with nootropics improves the synaptic plasticity of your brains neurons to provide all these benefits. Over an extended period of time, consistent supplementation with nootropics can even slow down the signs of aging, such as brain fog and memory loss. Theyre even able to counteract the development of brain disorders, like Alzheimers Disease.

In addition to improving the synaptic plasticity of your neurons, Nootropics improve the health of your brain, and thereby its functioning, by increasing the amount of blood flow to it. This increased blood flow carries with it more nutrients, glucose, and oxygen, all primary fuel sources that your brain uses for energy when it focuses.

Interestingly, the brain only makes up 2% of your total body weight, but it is responsible for 20% of your energy consumption. This is because the brain requires a lot of energy to function properly and to be able to focus on the external environment. It even takes a significant amount of energy just to sustain consciousness.

The anecdotal evidence supports claims that nootropics can provide all of these benefits, but there is still the need for more studies. If you choose to try them out for yourself, look for signs that they are working, such as less brain fog and more mental clarity. They may just be what your brain needs, and could even be life-changing.

Brief Guide To Nootropic Supplements – Serie A Weekly

To start with, nootropics are simply supplements used to enhance the function of the brain. In more technical terms, cognitive enhancing supplementsare used to boost the brains memory power and improve concentration. These supplements are often used as studying aids, to help with individual focus and increase attention spans. You may occasionally find these supplements been referred to as smart drugs because they increase mental energy, motivation, intelligence.

Not all smart drugs are efficient and safe. However, nootropics are considered safe and do not have any side effects with short or long term use. When used correctly, these supplements pose little or no risk of side effects. A huge majority of nootropics work by increasing communications between neurons, assisting to balance neurotransmitter levels and improving energy metabolism in your neurons. They also promote the health of brain cells as well as stimulate the growth of new synapses and neurons.

The history of nootropics dates back to the 1960s when Belgian pharmacologists V. Skondia and S. Giurgea invented the first nootropic. They created the first smart drug that could be used as a cognitive booster with minimal side effects. This first supplement was able to improve brain functions and promote positive brain stimulants. Some of the most common cognitive enhancing supplements out there today include Piracetam, Coluracetam, Nefiracetam, Oxiracetam, Pramiracetam, Phenylpiracetam, Aniracetam, Nebracetam.

There are also some popular natural nootropics that are present in the foods that we eat. Foods such as licorice, yerba mate, bacopa monnieri, grape seed extract and fish oil are all rich in cognitive enhancing substances. Most nootropic supplements are actually made using the prior mentioned ingredients. This is what makes the supplements effective in boosting memory power and concentration. However, it is important to note that these supplements do not instantly give you a better intellect or a higher IQ.

The brain is made up of billions of neurons that are connected to each other through synapses. Neurons communicate with each other using specific neurotransmitters. When neurotransmitters send signals faster and more efficiently, the brain is able to do more. This is where you experience longer attention spans, increased processing ability for mental work, mood elevation, better memory and improved concentration. All these cognitive enhancements are made possible with appropriate and consistent use of nootropic supplements.

With continued use of these supplement, you can significantly improve your brain function and also increase the flow of blood to your brain. Increase in flow of blood to your brains results in an enhanced supply of nutrients, oxygen and glucose which is the primary source of energy required for extended hours of brain usage. For the brain to function at its best, it must have adequate energy to power the neurotransmitters that are vigorously at work.

Neuro-preservation and neuro-protection are also some of the other results of using quality nootropics. This means that you can effectively slow down the ageing of your brain and preventing damage to brain cells as well.

Take a Chill Pill (How to Relax in the Modern Age) – Huffington Post

There are millions of people using smart drugs every day and this world of self-experimenters is expanding rapidly. As the self-tinkering becomes more mainstream, its possible to find more of these cognitive enhancing nootropics across the internet. Tim Ferriss is one of the main motivating forces increasing the reach of nootropics and helping them reach more people than ever.

Most recently, he has advocated for medicinal mushrooms, such as mushroom coffee with chaga and reishi mushroom. While these nootropics are thousands of years old, only recently are they seeing a resurgence in the mainstream discourse.

Most people think of improving their brain power by simply taking stimulating drugs and getting to work harder and for longer periods. While this is great, it can also be problematic at times. Many people experience burnout and it can take a toll on many aspects of your performance.

Tim Ferriss once discussed CILTEP and remarked that it would require him to sleep for an entire day afterwards! Not something that you want.

Even though it isnt popular wisdom, one of the main ways to increase cognitive performance (on tests, for example) is to reduce anxiety and relax. A lot of people are so worried about the results that they do not perform their best mentally and it shows. There are many nootropics that you can use in order to reduce anxiety and stress, but what about enjoying some time outside with friends?

A simple win is to find a game of foosball with friends, which can help you to blow off some steam and enjoy the best experience that you can. Most of the time, people who are experiencing a fun time with outdoor activities find that at least some of the stress melts away.

For the stress that doesnt, there are a few great options within the nootropic family, which can help. Rhodiola rosea is a great adaptogenic herb that can help to improve resilience in the face of stress. Many of the Vikings have used this hundreds of years ago.

Combining these tactics can go a long way in improving your mental performance and it doesnt have to hurt you in the long run. Too many people think of using nootropics and smart drugs as such a short term endeavor. Instead of worrying about that, just make sure to reduce anxiety and symptoms of stress and mental performance will benefit as a result.

Sharp & Energized! IMPRESS! Dietary Supplement for Men Unleashes Nootropic Power of Cereboost from Naturex – Digital Journal

MaxLabs US, designer and marketer of IMPRESS! Dietary Supplement for Men, officially announces Cereboost from Naturex (Avignon, France) has been selected as one of the major branded ingredients in their new high-potency "crossover" supplement to keep men "Sharp & Energized Today," "Impressive Tonight" and "Clear Tomorrow."

IMPRESS! Dietary Supplement for Men disrupts the world of nootropics and "smart drugs," largely by including Naturex Cereboost in the innovative U.S. Pat. Pend. Formula. Many discussions about IMPRESS! are centered on its traditional "male enhancement" and athletic performance properties, but its support of brain and cognitive performance are equally important. Men often take multiple supplements - some for energy, physical performance and "nootropics" for mental agility and alertness. Cereboost is a superior nootropic choice that helps IMPRESS! keep men "Sharp & Energized."

The "nootropic" category is largely served by ingredients not well-suited to the lifestyle of our customers seeking energy and clarity. Prescription CNS stimulants like Armodafinil vs. Modafinil have many side effects. Over-the-counter nootropic options consist of synthetics like Adrafinil, Noopept and Phenylpiracetam, while Huperzine-A and Bacopa have been popular herbal nootropics. Unlike Cereboost; Huperzine-A and Bacopa lacked sufficient evidence to earn a place in the "Sharp & Energized" portion of our formula.

Data on Huperzine-A and Bacopa as "cognitive enhancers" is largely based on rodent studies or long term use in the elderly or those with head injuries - hardly convincing. Compare this to the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and crossover study that determined Cereboost improves cognitive performance in healthy individuals. Additionally, many of the old nootropics are banned from sport by WADA or have been discontinued in other countries.

There is additional value in the fact Health Canada has granted Cereboost important cognitive health claims for support of cognitive function, cognitive performance and working memory. Documented performance, an excellent safety profile and suitability for competitive athletes are nootropic characteristics that truly IMPRESS!. We are honored to collaborate with Naturex on this new concept for men that's a safe, fun and enjoyable addition to their lives.

Naturex Nutrition & Health Business Unit Director, Elizabeth Bui on Cereboost and IMPRESS!:

Sharp & Energized! IMPRESS! Dietary Supplement for Men Unleashes Nootropic Power of Cereboost from Naturex - Digital Journal

Why Would People Without Diabetes Monitor Their Blood Sugar? – A Sweet Life

Earlier this month, Gizmodo published a story about Sano Intelligence, a healthcare startup that is making a continuous glucose tracker that sticks to a users skin and monitors blood sugar elevations through a mobile app. The news Gizmodo wanted to make a point of is that Sano plans to market the product to people without diabetes. If youre wondering what the tech publication thought of it, their headline says it all: Nobody Needs This Silicon Valley-Made Blood Sugar Tracker.

My first instinct was also that it sounded ridiculous and in my head I poked fun: Ooh, look what this slice of pizza does to my blood sugar. Cool! I couldnt imagine why anyone with normal body functions would want to be privy to their short-term spikes and dips. It appeared that Sano was taking short cuts. Instead of focusing on changing the lives of people with diabetes, the company was looking to make a quick buck. (Quick in medical-device land is still far from quick.)

After my initial reactionary response, I spent time thinking about why anyone would want to be tethered to physical updates like those of us with diabetes (myself included). Are people without diabetes curious to learn more about their deeper metabolic functions? And, is it worth it to those of us with diabetes to keep an eye on new product launches like the one from Sano Intelligence?

But first, what is it? The Sano tracker is a small stick-on sensor that feels like a piece of Velcro. Its covered in hundreds of tiny microstructures that are less than half a mm in length, says Ashwin Pushpala, CEO of Sano Intelligence. The daily-use patch goes into the skin with the help of an applicator and is far less invasive than the Libre or other CGMs currently on the market. Pushpala hopes to have it available later this year.

Going this route, as a lifestyle-enhancement tool versus a diagnostic one used to make insulin-dosing decisions, allows the startup to get to market quicker and instead of a rigorous FDA approval, it can apply for a simpler form of regulatory sign off for what the FDA considers to be a low-risk device. This category refers to technology thats intended to promote, track, and/or encourage choice(s) which, as part of a healthy lifestyle, may help living well with certain chronic diseases or conditions.

Currently, there are no solutions on the market that provide a painless, discreet, or affordable way for people with pre-diabetes to monitor their glucose levels to make more informed diet and exercise choices. We feel very strongly that we want to build a product that fits their needs, says Pushpala.

With type 2 diabetes on the riseundiagnosed and diagnosedand vast numbers categorized with pre-diabetes (some say 50% of Americans), its reason enough to view what Sano is planning as potentially good for everyone. This population needs a simpler tech solution that they can adopt with minor inconveniences. The once-a-day patch from Sano could be the answer, and even if it isnt, who are we to say it shouldnt be attempted? Sano gets a return on years of research, a larger pool of consumers to sell to and it avoids lengthy clinical trials and years of red tape.

While I was considering this idea of a world of people wearing glucose trackers, I reached out to Geoffrey Woo, CEO and co-founder of Nootrobox, a nootropics-based startup located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Woo started his company with a desire to improve cognition. His goal: to grow more neurons in the brain. There was a misperception that you couldnt grow new ones, says Woo.

Much like vitamins, nootropicssmart drugs or cognitive enhancershas both believers and naysayers. Early adopters that have warmed to this field call themselves biohackers and theyre looking to re-engineer their bodies to be smarter, more creative and more alert. One of the ways they do this is by obsessively watching their intake of food.

How do we watch our bodys reaction to food? By wearing a CGM. Woo wears an Abbott FreeStyle Libre and loves it. Youre more thoughtful in your biometrics, says Woo. Woos goal is to track his mental claritywhere he is at a normal state and how he can get to an enhanced state. Why do you crash after a big meal? asks Woo. By tracking his meals Woo feels that he can refer back to the truth, which will enforce good behavior.

We all know a Coke, fries and hamburger arent good for us, but seeing my blood sugar spike to 13.4 (241) is like, Thats an insane jump! says Woo. For help in understanding his bodys mechanics, Woo has Dr. Manual Lam, Nootrobox science and clinical lead. Lam also works at a hospital in Palo Alto, and is a believer in many of the things that Woo holds dear, namely our ability to re-boot our bodies at a cellular level.

A lot of chronic diseases are due to nutrition and diet. Its funny that doctors are the ones teaching it and weve only gotten four weeks of nutrition or one semester of biochemistry, says Lam. As a hospitalist at a government funded hospital, Lam sees a wide range of sick patients, including those with type 2 diabetes. I think there are some fundamental principles that have been propagated, says Lam. If were all doing the right thing, why is there an increase in obesity and diabetes?

While Nootrobox, which currently doesnt market anything for people with diabetes, wasnt able to get funding on a recent episode of Shark Tank, the company is growing. It might take time for nootropics to go mainstream, but its believers, those who want to gain valuable insights into their bodies, could be the first wave in diabetes tools gaining tractioneven with those of us with diabetes.

Sano Intelligence is committed to casting a wide net with its technology. Our beta release that we are targeting for later this year is step one, says Pushpala. As we continue to test and conduct clinical trials, we are absolutely taking all the steps necessary for FDA approval of future device designs that will target the diabetic market.

If the increased attraction in specialty diets like Whole30, Ketogenic and Paleo are any example, it wont be long before more people are embracing what were previously considered to be tools for people with diabetes. I use [the Libre] all the time, its important to have a visual reminder. Everyone is going to be diabetic or obese and we need more tools to help us. A CGM is a good alarm clock to pull us back, says Woo.

Hacking the Human Body with the CEO of Nootrobox – Paste Magazine

Computers have been the innovation platform of the last decade. The human body will be the innovation platform of the next decade.

Those were the words Geoff Woo, CEO & co-founder of Nootrobox, who recently spoke at The Economist EventsInnovation Summit 2017. Nootrobox is a San Francisco-based nootropics company funded by Andreessen Horowitz, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Zynga CEO Mark Pincus, among others. The company is best known for GO CUBES, its chewable coffee nootropic (a compound you take to enhance cognition).

Woos area of expertise is the rapidly growing trend of biohackingtreating the body as hardware which can be improved through constant tweaking. Think everything from fasting to smart drugs, to implanting glucose monitors under your skin, to microdosing LSD and youll see why the human body is the next platform for innovation.

Basically, what started as a trend among techies in Silicon Valley is becoming more mainstream, with people drinking bulletproof coffee and taking nootropics to try to get ahead at work, at school, in athletics, in gaming, etc And Woo is part of a new generation of entrepreneurs who want to hack the brain and the bodyimproving everyday performance through nutritional supplements called nootropics.

Better Brains, Better Society

Nootropics are a broad classification of cognition-enhancing compounds which have shown to produce minimal side effects and seem suitable for long-term use. They are designed to heighten productivity, memory, mental function and overall physical energy. These compounds include those occurring in nature or ones already produced by the human body (such as neurotransmitters), and their synthetic analogs. We already regularly consume some of these chemicals: B vitamins, caffeine, and L-theanine, in our daily diets.

To better understand how this under 30 CEO is changing the face of cognition-enhancing compounds, Paste interviewed Woo about Nootrobox, his business philosophy and why he thinks millennials have an edge when it comes to start-ups.

Paste: Why did you start Nootrobox?

Geoff Woo: As a competitive person by nature, Ive always had the drive to tap deeper into my full cognitive and physical potential. So a few years ago, I dove into the world of biohacking and nootropics, and I really absorbed the science and theories behind nootropics and also the practical necessities like safety and quality control processes to enhance oneself safely. I had access to some of the top researchers and academics in the space (some who are now my colleagues and friends), and I thought that what I had learned might be valuable to other people. Thats when I decided to launch Nootrobox as a service for high-quality, science-validated nootropics.

Paste: How did you get the funds to start the company?

Woo: At the very beginning, I started running the company off my credit card and savings. We were very scrappy and didnt pay ourselves anything besides rent money. That scrappiness allowed us to be cash-flow positive from Day 1.

As the business started scaling, we realized that Nootrobox could really be special. We then invited some great friends and mentors to chip in to give us a working capital base. It snowballed from there. Now we have a great group of investors from VCs like Andreessen Horowitz to legendary founders and operators like Marissa Mayer.

Paste: What is the best part about running your company?

Woo: Our time is the most valuable asset we have, and I get to spend it in the trenches with some of the smartest, most driven people I know in the world. Its a real luxury to choose the team I get to work with!

Paste: Do you think millennial CEOs have an edge?

Woo: I think any CEO with the energy and fearlessness to work on what might sound like a crazy idea has an edge. Often times, these CEOs are millennials because theyre younger, fresher, and have less to lose.

Paste: Why do you think millennials are more likely to take risks and follow their passions?

Woo: They have less to lose. Its very scary to float your life savings on a crazy idea when you have a family and mortgage. The bar to pull the trigger to go is now that much higher, and often times the best ideas are what seem like the riskiest at Day 0.

Paste: How do you achieve work/life balance as the CEO of a high-growth startup?

Woo: I dont see a tradeoff between work and life. If theres a tradeoff, then youre doing it wrong as a CEO. Theres just one life. If I didnt thrive off what Im working on, Im doing my job as CEO wrong. I have the luxury to focus on a space that excites me intellectually. My style is to go all-in when Im in San Francisco, and then when I have a week or two to take a breather, Ill travel and try to totally unplug.

Paste: Why do you love what youre doing? Whats next?

Woo: Unlocking human potential is such an awesome opportunity. Theres so much blue sky to work in. I feel like were at the very start of the biohacking revolution just like how in the 70s and 80s was the start of the computer revolution. We get to make the future!

Le-Vel’s new premium nootropic capsule designed to support, optimize mental capabilities – Yahoo Finance

FRISCO, Texas, March 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --Over time, and thanks in large part to our overscheduled lives, we just don't feel as sharp as we once did. But here's the good news: We don't have to accept it. We do, in fact, have the power to expand our brain functioning -- effectively and naturally.

Le-Vel Brands, the world leader in human nutritional innovation, is thrilled to introduce Expand, part of an incredible new category of products designed to help support healthy cognition. Like all Le-Vel products, Expand is based on premium-grade ingredients and a superior formula and delivery system for maximum results. It's a safe and easy-to-use product you can carry with you on the go. Expand was designed to help reinforce the brain's inherent capabilities, modulate the cognitive blueprint, and support mental and cognitive capabilities.

Le-Vel's customers immediately recognized the incredible benefits of Expand. With over $1 million in sales in less than 24 hours in a limited release -- a figure that doubled with the full launch -- Expand already has made its mark on Le-Vel's THRIVE Plus line of products.

Your brain stops growing when you're around 18 years old, but that doesn't mean you can't reshape and strengthen it. In fact, every time you have a new thought or create a new memory, the structure of your brain changes. That's called neuroplasticity, and we can increase it at any time by seeking new opportunities to learn. When your brain is receiving the nutrition it needs, it becomes far easier not only to take in new information, but also to recall and utilize it later. Neuroplasticity increases, and your brain becomes a more efficient, more powerful machine.

Expand represents Le-Vel's entry into a category called nootropics, or cognitive-supporting supplements intended to help users improve concentration and focus and support optimized mental processing. The goal of nootropic products is to help your brain function at its best and enhance your ability to learn.

Life's demands leave many of us frazzled, distracted and unable to concentrate. When we're pulled in so many directions, it's difficult if not impossible to perform at premium level. Details slip through the cracks and we feel fried. And, when we're in that state, our brains aren't as open to learning; instead, we're just surviving. Getting more sleep, finding time for exercise and cutting stress out of your life aren't always possible, but what you can control is your nutrition. With a quick and easy daily regimen like Expand, optimal cognitive nutrition is, well, a no-brainer.

"When we talk about health and wellness, physical fitness is only part of the equation. To live life on all cylinders, we've got to take care of both the body and the mind," say Le-Vel Co-CEOs, Co-Founders and Co-Owners Jason Camper and Paul Gravette. "In fact, we should commit to keeping our brains fit just like we do our bodies. Like all Le-Vel products, Expand brings the gold standard of premium-grade ingredients, along with a superior formula and delivery mechanism for safe and positive results. It's an incredibly exciting new product category that will empower people of all ages and lifestyles to seek their fullest potential."
