Five for Friday

Bill Simmons leads off our Five for Friday with a sentiment that we at HoopIdea strongly endorse.

This edition also includes HoopIdeas from an NBA player and the Wall Street Journal, as well as a new mobile phone app that allows viewers to call out floppers then ranks teams and players by how often they flop -- enjoy!

EMBRACE CHANGE

Here's a good rule in general for all professional sports: If something sucks, you need to make the appropriate rule change so it doesn't suck anymore. This isn't rocket science. -- Bill Simmons on Grantland

WANT TO STOP THE FLOP? THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT!

Flopbuzz is a completely free mobile app, where you can 'slap' a virtual buzzer on your mobile phone, everytime an NBA player 'flops', 'fakes' or 'cheats'. The Flopbuzz app accumulates all the users' buzzes (votes) to elect 'democratically' the most egregious flopper of the month, the season or the Playoffs. -- FlopBuzz.com

COUNT TECHNICAL FOULS AS PERSONALS

If a tech was also counted as a personal foul, might have less techs. -- Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anthony Parker (@_AnthonyPaker) via Twitter)

NO MORE BEAR HUG FOULS

A suggestion to curtail fouls the where the defender wraps up an offensive player without really going for the ball: How about calling these type of 'bear hugging' fouls (when you wrap your arms around a player) for a foul with two free throws and the ball on the side for the attacking player, regardless of what play he was going to make (most probably dunk the ball). -- Arash Kordi on NBA on My Mind

How to self-publish an ebook

Interested in self-publishing an e-book? CNET executive editor David Carnoy offers some basic tips for e-book publishing and lays out your best options for publishing quickly and easily.

I begin with one caveat: The whole e-book market is rapidly evolving, and a lot of self-publishing companies are offering e-book deals bundled into their print book publishing packages, which makes them harder to break out and evaluate. It's all quite complicated, and in an effort to sort through the confusion, I've decided to offer a few basic tips and present what I think are some of the best options out there for creating an e-book quickly and easily. As things change -- and they will -- I'll do my best to keep this column up to date.

It's gotta be good: The same rule applies to self-published e-books as it does to print books. You have to start with a good product if you have any hope of selling it.

Create an arresting cover: When it comes to e-books, everything starts with the cover image. Creating an eye-catching, professional-looking cover that also looks good small (it has to stand out as a thumbnail image, since it's being sold online) is easier said than done, but it can really make a difference in terms of sales. Ideally, you should hire a graphic designer who has some experience creating book covers. From a production standpoint, an e-book cover is easier to create than a cover for a print book (you just need a JPEG with decent resolution), but it shouldn't look out of place among traditionally published e-books. I can't tell you how many bad self-published covers are out there.

Price your e-book cheaply: You should sell your e-book for $5.99 or less. According to research done by Smashwords, an online e-book publishing and distribution platform for authors, publishers, agents, and readers, $2.99 to $5.99 yields the most profit for self-published authors, and although 99 cents will get you more downloads, it's a poor price point for earning income (see Smashwords' presentation on pricing here). On the other hand, Lulu, one of the bigger online self-publishing operations, says that authors who price their e-books in the 99-cent to $2.99 range "sell more units and earn more revenue than those in any other price range."

It's important to note that Amazon's 70 percent royalty for authors only applies to Kindle books priced between $2.99 and $9.99; otherwise, the rate kicks down to 35 percent). As for going free, well, Smashword data indicates that free e-books get about 100 times more downloads than priced e-books.

Avoid any outfits that don't let you set the price: This is one of the cardinal rules of self-publishing an e-book. You must be able to control the pricing of your e-book. If you want to sell it for $0.99, then you should be able to sell it for $0.99.

Marketing is all about creating awareness for your e-book: I don't have any secret marketing tips to offer, but what I can say is that you can't sell a book if no one knows it exists. Most of book marketing is simply about creating awareness and you need to do that however you can, whether it's through social media or blogging or passing out fliers on a street corner. (I made a business card for my book, which I pass out if someone seems interested in hearing more about it.)

Here are the three big questions to bear in mind with e-book creation: first, what is the easiest and most cost-efficient way to produce an e-book? Second, where will it be distributed? And third, how much of a cut do you get? With those in mind, let's take a look at some of the more high-profile options available currently. I'm limiting it to these options because I want to keep this as simple as possible.

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) This is Amazon's e-book publishing platform and if you think you're going to sell a lot of e-books, you should figure out a way to upload your file (book) directly to KDP and avoid using any sort of middleman or e-book "aggregator" that takes a cut of the profits. If you're a true DIY person, you can create your own cover (though if you're not a professional designer, it's better to hire a pro) and format your e-book from a Word file using free software tools such as Mobipocket eBook Creator or Calibre. Mobipocket Creator allows you to create an e-book with a table of contents and convert it into Amazon's proprietary e-book format, AZW (MOBI, the file output by the program, is the same as AZW). You can start with a Word file, which then gets converted to HTML, then MOBI. (Check out the Mobipocket eBook Creator guide at the company's Web site).

Remove your location data from photos with PhotoInfoEraser

Your smartphone photos can have hidden data in them, including location data. PhotoInfoEraser can erase the data on Android phones, so you can share them without worry.

Image uploaded to Instagram without location data.

When you upload photos to Facebook, Twitter, or elsewhere on the Internet, you may be sharing more information than you know. Your photos can have hidden data in them, like exact location data. If it's a well-known public location, like Disneyland, you might not mind sharing that, but what if it's your home, or where your kids go to school?

The easiest way to avoid sharing location data on your photos is by turning off geotagging in your Android camera's settings. But maybe you've already taken photos that have location data on them. Or maybe you want to keep a copy of the photo with the location data, but share it without the data. In that case, an Android app called PhotoInfoEraser, can help.

Once you've loaded a photo to PhotoInfoEraser, just tap the Tag Delete button to erase all the metadata from your photo. Immediately afterward, you can choose to share the data-less photo to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.

The original photo is kept in your Android gallery and a copy of the photo, without the metadata, is stored in another location (/mnt/sdcard/Yamagoya/PIEraser).

That's it. Keep in mind that PhotoInfoEraser only works on one photo at a time. If you need to remove metadata from multiple photos, you'll probably want to look for a more robust desktop EXIF editor.

Vacationing abroad this summer? Keep iPhone charges in check

Planning a big international trip this summer and wondering how to make sure you don't get surprised with a shockingly high phone bill when you come home? Ask Maggie offers some advice.

Summer is here. And for lots of people that means it's time for a vacation abroad. So what should you do about your smartphone to ensure you don't get surprised with a massive phone bill upon your return?

If you're planning to leave the U.S., you might want to consider taking a few precautions before you leave to make sure you don't end up spending more on your phone bill than you spent on your plane ticket.

You could rent or borrow a phone for your trip with local service in the country or countries where you'll be traveling. Or you can pop in a local SIM card if you have an unlocked GSM phone for similar savings. This will save you money by allowing you to use local prepaid services while traveling. But it's not always the most convenient solution, especially if you're visiting multiple countries or you want the added convenience of using your own phone with your own phone number.

In this edition of Ask Maggie I offer some advice to iPhone subscribers who are planning international trips and want to avoid surprises on their monthly bills.

Want to save a buck on your travels? Disable data roaming and cellular data.

Dear Maggie, I am traveling to China later this month for two weeks with a tour group. I don't think that I will need my iPhone while I am traveling, but I don't want to leave it at home. I'd still like to listen to music on the flight and maybe even email friends while I am away. And in an emergency it would be nice to have a phone that I can use to call home if I absolutely need to do so. But for the most part I don't anticiapte needing it, since I'll be with a tour guide and tour group most of the time.

I know that you have to be careful with iPhones while traveling overseas. I've seen stories about people who come home to huge phone bills. What's the best way to make sure this doesn't happen to me?

Thanks, Margie

Dear Margie, You are absolutely right about people getting surprised by hefty iPhone bills after they return home from a trip abroad. Most smartphone customers are on a fixed monthly service plan for voice and data. You're given a certain amount of voice minutes and a certain amount of data to consume each month. If you exceed these limits you're charged overages.

Last day to enter Spacing’s Creative Mapping contest

May 31st, 2012 By Spacing // No Comments DEADLINE TODAY! Spacing magazine presents the CREATIVE MAPPING CONTEST

Do you love maps? Are you an illustrator, graphic designer, or visual storyteller? Spacing wants you to submit your original creative maps inspired by a Canadian city.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Thursday, May 31st, 2012

COST: Free!

HOW TO ENTER: You must register to enter. Send us an email and we will provide you with uploading details. EMAIL: creativemapping@spacing.ca

KEEP UP TO DATE: Feel free to RSVP to our event listing on Facebook in order to receive reminders about the deadline and other announcements (such as prizes).

WHAT MAKES A MAP CREATIVE (see examples at bottom of page)? The art of map-making has taken tremendous strides in the digital age. In the last decade, there has been an explosion of maps that are not necessarily meant to be used for directions, but instead are considered works of art and inspired imagination. We want you to create an illustrative map that reflects a Canadian city (or a neighbourhood, community) or is inspired by the urban elements that make up a city (examples: waterfront, transit, cycling, walking, graffiti, parks, architecture, laneways/alleys, streets, traffic, taxis, weather, sewers, infrastructure, etc.)

How many maps can I submit? As many as you like.

When will the winners know that their map is being published? Spacing will email all winners in the summer to make sure we have the optimal file for printing, as well as make sure your name is spelled correctly. Nothing will be published in Spacing without your permission.

Are there prizes? Yes (but no cash). Besides all the fame you will receive for being published in Spacing (!?!), there will be a variety of prizes from sponsors and Spacing advertisers. We will announce the prizes available as we get closer to the deadline. Spacing is assembling a team or jurors from across Canada, including a few Spacing editors. We are trying to get a mix of jurors from different professions (cartographers, architects, graphic designers, illustrators, and Spacing readers). We will publish the jurors names after the final submission deadline of April 30th.

Ways of keeping warm

Welcome to June, the month that, according to the show tune, is busting out all over. Also, June is currently zipping its hoodie, pulling on extra socks, and turning on the heater.

For us and our pets, June is a time of new focus, namely finding ways of keeping warm. There are a number of such ways.

First option: find the bit of watery sunlight that remains, ensure a blanket or rug is present, and find a friend. Ruby and Bon Bon have employed this option.

So have Stellar and Harlem...

...and Tigger and Zoe.

The sun has gone? Yes, it usually has. So find someone of like mind and similar appearance, and snuggle. I don't know the names of these "bichpoos" (Vanessa, can you tell us?), but they know how to keep themselves warm.

WHATS TRENDY

Special

Josie Marans sunscreen not only protects against sun damage, but repairs and reverses damage already done to your skin. Find it at Sephora or online at JosieMaranCosmetics.com starting at $14.

It wasnt too long ago I was begging for warmer weather, but now when I step outside Im reminded what a double-edged sword Augusta summers are. Lets dwell on the positives, though, and list some beach weekend must-haves.

You wont go to the beach without getting sand everywhere that you dont want it, but with smart preparation you can have as little as possible. One way to do this is by laying out a beach blanket underneath your towels, bags and coolers.

Lands End people who know how to do the beach right sells a velour beach blanket measuring 78 inches by 70 inches that will give you ample room to stake out a beach HQ and keep your water bottles less gritty.

If you believe everything you read, it seems like even good things are supposedly killing us like sunscreen. Thats right, some environmental groups are saying traditional sunscreen might be doing more harm than good.

Im no tree hugger, but Im a sucker for anything that says mineral or all-natural if theres a shadow of doubt in my mind about a product. Josie Marans daily sun protection, using argan oil to create an SPF of 30 or higher, is a great all-natural alternative to slathering on the white greasy stuff.

How to Edit Office Documents on Your Tablet

Can a tablet replace your business laptop? Probably, if you're willing to load it up with the right apps. If youre considering carrying an iPad or Android device around instead of your laptop, you're most likely concerned about sacrificing the functionality of a full PC--especially the office software that allows you to view and edit documents.

Choosing the right tablet for your business needs can be tough; fortunately, no matter what tablet you buy, you can find excellent apps for both iPad and Android that duplicate the functionality of popular document-editing software packages such as Microsoft Office. This guide will help you select an editing app and get started in editing documents on your tablet.

Quickoffice allows you to choose from many cloud hosting services.Although iPad or Android tablet users can try any of the apps created for phones (check out our guide to editing documents on your smartphone for recommendations), one application is designed with tablets in mind: Quickoffice Pro HD ($20, for Android and iPad). Quickoffice provides a plethora of tools for working with documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, as well as the extraordinarily convenient option to sync documents with cloud hosting services such as Dropbox automatically.

Getting started with these syncing services in Quickoffice is as simple as tapping the '+' icon in the bottom-left corner of the iPad or the '+cloud' icon in the top-right corner of the Android interface, and entering the credentials for the service of your choice. Youll need to log in only once. After setting up Dropbox or another service, you can browse it from the left-hand menu to find a document to edit, or just create a new document using the '+document' icon in the toolbar. Though the app gives you a choice between Office 97-2003 and Office 2007-10 formats, you should stick to the newer versions (namely, the 2007-10 .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx formats) unless you have some reason not to.

In Quickoffice you can automatically share and upload documents to a number of social hosts.Once youve finished editing documents and you're ready to share them, this same interface allows you to send them via email (using the dedicated email button on the toolbar) or upload them to any of several popular social hosts (using the button directly adjacent). This is a great way to work on documents with colleagues who use different platforms (PC/Mac/Linux): You can share documents on a service such as Evernote, collect the edits, and then republish the edited documents in a Microsoft Office-friendly format.

Edits are easy to make, too, because Quickoffices text editor is straightforward and uncluttered, with Bold/Italic/Underline, Undo/Redo, Search, Print (using something like Cloud Print for Android), and Formatting options available along the toolbar. You can input, cut, and paste text by tapping or dragging anywhere inside the main interface. If that's too troublesome for you, and you own an Android tablet, consider investing in a good Bluetooth keyboard. Usually you can find a good one for under $50, but be sure to see our guide to Android Bluetooth tablet keyboards for more information and buying advice.

Here's a look at Quickoffice's document editor, with the formatting menu open in the top-right corner.

The spreadsheet editor is much the same, with an extra option added to the toolbar to insert new rows. You can resize or copy cells by tapping or dragging anywhere within the main interface, just as in the document editor. Clicking within the function bar brings up an elegant function-search wizard that allows you to input Excel-style functions manually, or to choose any of several common functions from a menu.

This is Quickoffice's spreadsheet editor, with the formatting menu open.

The presentation editor also has few surprises; the usual text formatting and undo options are right where they always are. In addition, the butterfly menu in the top-right corner allows you to insert text, shapes, or photos into a presentation, and the play icon lets you see your presentation in action. As always, you can drag images around a slide, and you can long-press to cut and paste.
