Boxee Launches Cloudee, Its Private Online Video-Sharing Service

Boxee is best known for software that makes online video more accessible on users TV screens. Now its working on something totally different helping users to take their own personal videos and making them available in the cloud. With the launch of Cloudee, the New York City-based startup is introducing a new service for users to store, access, and share their private videos with friends and family, all with an easy-to-use mobile app.

Of course, theres no shortage of mobile video-sharing applications or cloud storage applications. On the one hand, there are apps like Viddy and Socialcam, which aim to let users shoot or upload videos that theyve already shot, apply filters and share them on social networks like Twitter and Facebook. And there are services like Dropbox, which have opened up cloud storage and allow users to create folders and share them with others.

Cloudee sits somewhere in the middle: Its designed with sharing in mind, but private sharing. And while other cloud storage services enable you to share any type of file, Cloudee is all about video storage and sharing. The closest comparable might be private video-sharing service Givit.

The service is launching with a private, invite-only mobile application for the iPhone. Users can upload videos from the app, put them in folders and then choose which family or friends get to view them. They can then be accessed from the mobile app, from a web browser, or even from a users Boxee Box.

The introduction of a cloud offering and a supporting mobile application could be seen as a bit of a departure for Boxee, which has spent the last several years building software for PCs and connected devices like the eponymous Boxee Box. The cloud service is coming out, not long after the startup has backed away from building and supporting its PC software, showing that the future of the company might be in the cloud after all.

Also a bit of a departure is the focus on personal videos, as so much of its work in the past was focused on building software that made it easier to access the wealth of online and streaming video, first on PCs and later through the Boxee Box.

But Boxee clearly sees an opportunity for private video sharing in a market that isnt very well developed. The introduction of a cloud service for sharing of personal videos could also open the door for other cloud services from the startup. That includes enabling storage of other media files, for instance, or maybe even the ability to record videos and save videos in the cloud.

Boxee is a partially open-source freeware media player software platform that integrates personal locally stored media with Internet streaming media along with social networking features. China bans Tiananmen web searches

Chinese authorities have blocked internet access to search terms related to the 23rd anniversary of the 1989 crackdown against protesters at Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

Terms such as "six four", "23", "candle" and "never forget", typed in Chinese search engines, do not return any information about the event.

Discussions of the unrest of 4 June 1989 remain taboo in the country.

But some users managed to upload a few pictures on to Twitter-like Sina Weibo.

In 1989, troops shot dead hundreds of pro-democracy protesters gathered in central Beijing.

The demonstrations have never been publicly marked in China, and the government has never said how many were killed.

But human rights groups' estimates range from several hundred to several thousand killed.

For most Chinese the words 'Tiananmen square' don't bring to mind the same images and associations as in the West

Analysts say that censoring any online talk related to the event is especially important for Beijing this year, as the government gets ready for a leadership handover.

How To Keep Track Of How Other People Are Using Your Media Online

If you have a blog, post on photo-sharing sites or upload your videos to YouTube, youve probably wondered when and how your media is being used by other people. Regardless of whether its free-to-use media or copyrighted material, the process of tracking it down is the same.

Depending on the type of media youre producing, you can track it in different ways. For our purposes, well break the search into three types: art and photos; writing; and videos.

Tracking where photos and art appear online is pretty easy if you dont mind doing it manually. The web app TinEye provides a simple reverse image search that will track anywhere your image turns up online. All you need to do is upload your image and TinyEye will search to see if it appears anywhere else online. Googles own Search by Image will do the same thing.

Less helpful but still useful is your image hosts built-in stats page. If youre using any of the big image-hosting sites such as Picasa (views), Photobucket (Home > Stats) or Flickr (Your Stats), youll find a statistics page showing when people link to your images. Provided someone is linking and crediting your image, youll see where its coming from.

Tracking down your written words is a bit tricky. The simple and automated method is to create a Google Alert with your name, but thats only going to show up when someone is linking to your writing with your name included. The other easy method is to set up trackbacks on your blog so you can tell when people link to you. If your blog doesnt support trackbacks (or youre not using a blog format) you can use Googles Webmaster Tools for free. Once Webmaster Tools is set up, click Traffic > Links to see who is linking to you.

Of course, not every usage of your writing media is going to link back to you. To find out where your words might also be appearing, you can use a copy search engine like Copyscape. In Copyscape you paste the URL you want to check and Copyscape will pull up any links that are identical. You can also sign up for the automated service Copysentry that does the same thing for $US4.95 a month.

Tracking where your videos turn up online is remarkably easy and built right into the two major video-sharing platforms, YouTube and Vimeo. You can check where traffic comes from and where the video is embedded.

For YouTube, click your account name in the top right corner, select Video Manager and click the Analytic button. Here youll find the traffic of all your videos and a breakdown of where that traffic comes from. To find out where the video is embedded, select the video you want to track and then click the Analytics button. Select Playback locations, then click on the Embedded player on other websites link. Here youll find every site that has embedded your video.

For Vimeo you need a paid Plus membership to see where you videos are embedded. Click Me > My Stats > Advanced stats > Embed. Here youll see where your videos have been embedded.

Whether youre curious as to how your freely available media gets used, or if youre trying to hunt down someone breaking copyright, the above tips should get you on your way. We werent able to find a good way to track down how music is used save for a Google Alert or a stores built-in statistics tool (the online store Bandcamp, for instance, gives you a breakdown of incoming links), but if you have some ideas (about music or any other media) please share them in the comments.

2012 Post Hunt: Did you survive?

Enormous bowling pins. A kayak and a pile of poop. Bob Segers Night Moves on an endless loop. How else would you want to spend a Sunday afternoon?

The Hunt: Now with a bigger pile of poop (JUANA ARIAS - FOR THE WASHINGTON POST) At the fifth annual Post Hunt, a bizarre game in which brainy Washington Post Magazine readers fanned out across downtown D.C. to solve a series of mind-bending puzzles for a $2,000 prize, the cast of characters was nearly as eclectic as the Hunt itself. Solving the puzzles requires a certain quirky sense of humor; they were, after all, devised by Dave Barry, Gene Weingarten and Tom Shroder.

Team Nogganawhin came to the contest with low expectations. After all, their team name (sounds like not gonna win) was a bit defeatist. Named the team too soon, it seems: the group took home the grand prize. We really had no illusions about our chances," said John Mackedon, who served as the team's leader. "We didn't expect to win, ever, so it's such an amazing turn of events for us ... I'm literally shaking a little bit."

Members of the winning team rejoice. (JUANA ARIAS - FOR THE WASHINGTON POST) The team included a dozen members, some Hunt veterans, some rookies. Mackedon attributed the group's success to a diversity of perspectives. "Between us, we had a lot of a-has, and played off each other's strengths," he said. And when they completed the last challenge, they had triathlete Damon Taaffe, 35, of Arlington, sprint to the stage at Franklin Square Park to ensure the victory.

As for what they will do with the $2,000: "We're going to subsidize a local watering hole. That's going to be our first expenditure," he said.

Shroder (former editor of The Washington Post Magazine), estimated that about 12,000 people participated.

Wii U Getting Achievements And Cloud Saves [Rumor]

E3 doesnt start officially until Tuesday, but many publishers will be pushing out news and game reveals starting tomorrow. Nintendo may even get the ball rolling later today with its Nintendo Direct presentation. While we dont expect Nintendo to reveal anything mind blowing during the presentation, a recent rumor suggests that Nintendo will have even more exciting news to share during its proper E3 press conference on Tuesday.

Speaking to anonymous developers working on multiple Wii U projects, Wii U Daily learned that the Wii U will be getting achievements, cloud storage and deep social networking integration. The developers suggest that Nintendo will be showing off these features during its E3 press conference. If true, these rumors suggest a Nintendo that is doing some exciting and innovative things in fields that we have taken for granted thus far.

The first rumor says that the Wii U will be getting achievements called Nintendo Points. They will be similar to Xbox 360 achievements and PlayStation 3 trophies in that players will earn them for completing objectives in game. Unlike the other console manufacturers, however, Nintendo will be bringing a much needed change to the achievement system. As of now, players will only receive points in exchange for completing in-game objectives. Its all kind of superficial and only appeals to the base instinct of wanting to see a number rise. Nintendo Points will offer in-game rewards for completing objectives and getting achievements. Think of a Mario game that unlocks new levels as you earn achievements. Thats what the developers are suggesting.

The second rumor points to Nintendo getting a cloud saving feature just like what Sony and Microsoft offer. Comparably, the Nintendo cloud storage solution will allow players to save their game saves and profiles on the cloud for easy transfer between consoles. The difference between Nintendos and the competitions solution is that Nintendos cloud storage will be free. Sony and Microsoft require that players pay for either PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold respectively to gain access to cloud saves.

The third and most exciting feature is the integration of social media into the Wii Us operating system. The developers specifically point out that Facebook, Twitter and YouTube will be the first services to be integrated. Unlike the other consoles integration, Nintendo is apparently going for a deeper integration that has yet to be seen on a console. The developers say that players will be able to pause a game at any moment to share a screenshot of the game on Facebook or Twitter. The YouTube feature is the most exciting as it would allow players to record and upload gameplay videos to YouTube directly from the console.

A few other details from the developers include a new Mii creation system that relies on a camera API that transfers a persons face onto the Mii proper. The 3DS has this feature as well, but the camera is so low-res that it cant really capture a persons face that well.

The other rumor is a bit more unfortunate. The developers say that porting current projects to the Wii U is harder than originally thought. Fortunately, porting from the Xbox 360 to the Wii U isnt that bad since they have similar architecture. Just like the Xbox 360 before it, porting from the PlayStation 3 is an all-together different beast. It should be expected as the Wii U is rumored to have a quad-core processor similar to the processor on the Xbox 360. The cell processor in the PS3, while powerful, does not make it easy to port to the more traditional CPU architectures.

A lot of the rumors that you see here are entirely plausible and will probably show up at Nintendos E3 press conference or the Nintendo Direct later tonight. The achievements and cloud storage are the most likely, but I wouldnt count out the social networking features either. Nintendo needs to wow us at E3 and some of these features alone are enough to cause a stir. Heres hoping that Nintendo has the games to back up these admittedly exciting rumors.

Hush ye not! Here's a heckle of an idea to get rich — and save the world

You gotta hand it to the Americans. By god, they invented or at least morphed into profitability just about everything that's on my desk as I write this: my landline telephone; my iPad, which is open to my Facebook page; a DVD of the director's cut of "Edward Scissorhands"; even the plastic-lidded cup filled with a liquid that vaguely resembles coffee.

But now they've taken the cake. The new invention it's incumbent upon me to tell you about is far and away the greatest creation of that fiendishly innovative nation that has ever crossed a county, state or national border.

Armed with this smart weapon, Americans can not only "get their country moving again" which is something they do every four years until it stops in its tracks a couple of weeks later; they will also return to dominance around the world. Once everyone starts using this creation, the Russians will go back to playing roulette and the Chinese will have little choice but to while away their hours playing checkers.

If you haven't guessed by now, this invention is called Hecklevision. If you haven't heard of it, you will, for it will be coming to a cinema near you before you can say "Jackie Robinson."

Hecklevision apparently first saw the light of day or, in this case, the light of screen in Austin, Texas, at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. From there it spread like wildfire across to the Hollywood Cinema in Portland, Oregon.

You see, Americans love to heckle. Had they been around in Jesus' time, I'm sure one of them would have shouted, "Hey, dude, come down from your mount and stop sermonizing!" And that would have spelled the end not only of the Vatican and its golden hoards, but also of the lucrative Swarovski crystal crucifix business, before either got off the ground.

Now Americans have finally turned heckling into a commercial activity, just like they did with pizza, tacos, a drink marketed as coffee and imperialism all things originally invented in other countries.

Hecklevision is simple. People in a cinema who have mobile phones create text messages and send them to the screen in real time.

For instance, if Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" says to her dog Toto, "I've a feeling we're not in Kansas," you can shoot off a rib-tickler to the screen like: "That's what Sarah Palin said when she arrived in Moscow."

But the potential of this new technology goes far beyond anything the American mind has ever stumbled on before. This being the case, I am calling on the Gateses, the Jobses and the Zuckerbergs among my readers to throw in some of their hard-earned cash to take this heckling technology from the big screen and into the world of television news.
