Dropbox gives iOS users Camera Upload, free storage

Android users have had Dropbox's Camera Upload feature since February; now iOS users can join in the fun and earn some free storage space at the same time.

Back in February, Dropbox released a beta version of its Android app, testing its Camera Upload feature and rewarding those testers with free space for helping out. Since then, the feature has been officially launched for the Android, Mac, and Windows platforms. iOS users were left behind -- until now.

Dropbox released version 1.5 of its iOS app last night, bringing Camera Upload to iOS devices. iOS users can now earn up to 3GB of free space for uploading photos and videos.

To get started, make sure you have the latest version of the Dropbox app installed on your iOS device.

The next time you launch the app you'll be greeted with the setup screen for Camera Upload. The feature, when enabled, will automatically upload photos and videos on your iOS device to your Dropbox account. Instead of it uploading in the background as it does on Android, you have to have the app open on your iDevice. This shouldn't be a surprise as Apple doesn't allow apps to run in the background.

During the setup process, you'll be able to set whether you want only new photos and videos to be uploaded, or if you want Dropbox to upload everything in your camera roll.

If you haven't already taken advantage of the free 3GB from using Camera Upload on another platform, you'll earn 500MB of additional Dropbox storage for every 500MB uploaded, capping off at 3GB. With that in mind, it may be a good idea to let it upload your entire camera roll to get the free space. Don't worry, you can delete everything you uploaded once it has finished, and you won't lose the free space.

Should you change your mind, you can turn off Camera Upload under settings in the Dropbox app.

With Photo Stream, automatic upload for Google+, and many other ways to wirelessly sync your photos with your computer, is this something you'll use? Or is it simply a way of getting free Dropbox space?

Dropbox for iOS update saves your snaps, gives you 3GB free

Dropbox for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch has added automatic video and photo uploading, storing your snaps safely online.

The version 1.5 update, which is now available to download, has a feature that causes any snaps or footage you capture using your device to be automatically uploaded to your Dropbox account.

It's a feature that was already present on the Android version of the app, and provides peace of mind for anyone too lazy to physically back up all those thousands of pictures of your cat and videos of... your cat.

As an incentive to use the service (and possibly because Dropbox knows that most people have a huge number of photos clogging up their smart phones), Dropbox will give you up to 3GB of free extra space when you upload photos automatically, doling out the free storage in 500MB chunks.

I've used the app, and the automatic upload is easy to use -- it's just a virtual switch to flick in the settings tab, at which point you'll be asked if you want to upload snaps and clips from this point on, or whether you'd like to retroactively back up everything currently languishing on your phone.

There's one feature missing though, and that's the ability to stop videos from being automatically uploaded. If you're anything like me, you've got a tonne of photos you'd like to back up, but don't want enormous, less important video files hogging your storage.

Another downside is that, like the Google+ iOS app, you'll need to have Dropbox open in the background for it to back up your snaps automatically. Close down the app, and your snaps won't upload.

Are you a Dropbox fanatic? What do you use the service for? Let me know in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

Ways to get ads for your SME website

Having a website for your business to promote the products or services is always the icing on the cake. Your potential customer can have an online view of the product on your website and that you can convert it into a business opportunity

As long as you are running a website for glam models, this quote makes sense. Her story is so inspiring that you would consider launching a website that might make you a billionaire one day.

You are not a Cindy Margolis, nor are you a glam model or into her kind of a business. Your business and intention is to serve the common man, not the glam world.

So, when we talk about a business, startup or SME, the first thing that comes to our mind is a website. Having a website for your business to promote the products or services is always the icing on the cake. Your potential customer can have an online view of the product on your website and that you can convert it into a business opportunity.

So, when we talk about a website for your business, you must think a step ahead. That you make the most of that website to find additional revenues. A wonderfully-designed website with terrific content can even help you salvage your sinking business, as was the case with many companies in the past.

This is the era when digitalization has made website creation a simple and cost-effective affair, with Internet search giant Google offering free website for small and medium businesses (SMBs) in India. The success of this program has led it to roll out another service in Hyderabad, which enables small businesses in the city to upload 3D images of the interiors of their office, free of cost.

However, only having a simple website will not serve your cause. To make your business more popular and to reach out to more customers, you need advertisements on your site. For that to happen, the website should be unique in its looks and the user interface must be simple.

Here are some tips on how to get advertisements for your website:

Make your website popular

There are many ways to increase the reach of your site. Before landing direct ad deals, you will need to have a good amount of traffic on your site; about 1,000 unique visitors daily is good. If you are below that mark, you should focus on building traffic instead of looking for advertisers.

Cloud music is still the future for Apple, Amazon — really

Cloud music hasn't really caught on yet, but Apple and Amazon continue to bolster their services. The iPod proved that music drives hardware sales, and the big players can't afford to be without it.

Given recent headlines about cloud music, you might be forgiven for thinking that the feature is huge with consumers.

Word came Monday that Apple has finally caught up to Google and Amazon and begun to stream songs from the company's cloud. The following day, CNET broke news that Amazon is very close to reaching agreements with the top four record companies that would let it run a licensed cloud music service. Music industry sources also told CNET that Google and the labels continue to discuss cloud licenses.

Interesting news. Now here's the reality: Consumer adoption of cloud music has been lackluster, multiple music industry insiders tell me. The cloud has not yet led to a spike in interest or music sales, the sources told CNET. Data from The NPD Group supports that conclusion, said Russ Crupnick, the research's company's senior vice president and industry analyst.

"Despite the hullabaloo about cloud music, it hasn't gotten traction yet," Crupnick said, "I looked at our latest numbers and unreleased data, and only about 6 percent of the Internet population has even used something like [cloud music]."

That data suggests that music listeners are happy with the options they have now. Crupnick suspects that few people own enough music to max out their local storage, which would fuel the desire to store film and music libraries remotely. Representatives from Apple and Amazon did not respond to interview requests and Google declined to comment.

So why are the big music stores bothering to upgrade their music clouds?

One reason may be the iPod. Apple and the company's iconic digital music player proved music is a powerful driver of hardware sales. People want to listen to their jams on their mobile devices. Apple didn't care if the company's margins on song sales were thin. All the money was in selling iPods. Music has been a vital part of digital devices ever since. Keep in mind that in addition to being the Web's top retailer, Amazon is now very much a hardware maker.

The "cloud," of course, is the term used to describe where digital stuff "lives" when consumers store their files on a third party's servers rather than on their own PC or mobile device. While this type of data storage is old to techies, it is still relatively new to mainstream America. Heck, among the big three music stores, the cloud feature is barely a year old.

Amazon was first to launch cloud music with the initially unlicensed Cloud Drive and Cloud Player. Google later offered its own an unlicensed cloud-music service. Apple's system was the first to debut fully licensed.

It’s Time For You to Join My Robot Nation

I love retro-looking robots. The old covers of Amazing Stories and other pulp novels are full of examples of both evil robots on the rampage and helpful companions on long journeys across the galaxy. I cant put my finger on exactly what it is about clunky, humanoid-shaped robots with bucket heads, spinning gears on their chests, and pincers instead of fingers, but I just like it. Ill take Robby the Robot over David the Android as a personal assistant any day of the week.

Ive built quite a few robots in my day many of them Lego robots but a few have been soldered up in my workshop but none of them have a retro style. Most of them are wheel-based robots with no humanoid features other than maybe the eye-like ultrasonic sensors used for obstacle avoidance. Ive pretty much accepted the fact that the robots that exist in my minds eye will remain there hobbling along in my imagination as their chest lights blink random patterns of nonsense. But then I got lucky and met the team of My Robot Nation at Maker Faire a few weekends back. Now those imaginary robots have an actual chance to see the light of day.

My Robot Nation is awesome. You use your browser (must be WebGL-supported like Chrome or Firefox, but it can be turned on in Safari) to basically select the body parts of your imaginary robot and then drag and drop components such as bolts and panels and tools and other gizmos onto the body. You can color your robot and even create your own custom colors if you dont see what you like. And finally, you can apply stamps (think of them as stickers) that provide a bit more customization. When youre happy with your robots final design, you give your robot a name and select the size (from 2 all the way up to 6 in height) and then place your order your design is added to the My Robot Nation robot database for the world to see. My Robot Nation allows visitors to view its large database of customer designs but does not allow anyone to place an order for other users designs. This means your robot is one-of-a-kind! Only you will be able to hold the actual 3D, full-color robot in your hands.

Its really cool. Let me show you.

First, visit myrobotnation.com to start the process. Click the Make My Robot button in the center of the screen.Next, youll want to read over the basic instructions before you begin after reading the instructions youll see a basic screen that offers up custom body parts such as head, torso, left and right arms (they can be different) and legs or treads. Theres a Randomize Robot button that will allow you to have random robots generated using a mix of all the body parts, but to make the robot really your own, youll want to go through each of the heads, torsos, etc. to find the ones that suit you best. Ill tell you right now that I spent almost 30 minutes playing with different legs, arms, torso, and head. That was just to get the basic shape of the robot I hadnt even started with the color and stamp process yet!

Once I established the basic shape for Bruzer (the name of my robot) I selected the Parts button (represented by a small hex nut). Keep in mind that as you color and add parts that you can still go back and change basic body parts at any time. The Parts options are really amazing. There are eight different categories (they work like menus along the top of the Parts window) including Visors & Widgets, Robot Eyes, and Pipes & Circuits. Again, I probably spent about 30 to 40 minutes alone just adding small bolts to Bruzers shoulders, trying out different chest grilles, and tweaking the feet and head. (I ended up skipping the Robot Eyes category and instead choosing a three star gear for Bruzers single eye.)

Next came the color application. As I mentioned, you can create custom colors if you like, but I stuck with the basic colors. Clicking on certain key parts will apply color to only a portion of the body part. For example, clicking on Purple and then clicking on Bruzers legs doesnt color the entire leg purple. It only colored the inner portions leaving the feet and knees white and ready for another color. The color selection and application tool is very accurate but keep in mind that individual body parts have areas that are linked together, so if you click on a knee for example, it will color the two knees but also the top of the legs that meet the waistline. Its a bit hard to explain, so take a look at the next screen capture and youll see how the waist, knees and feet are color-locked. The inner tubes of the legs are also color-locked. Same with the inner tubes of the arms.
