Pressured- The story of a Teen(TGJ3M CPT) – Video

19-06-2012 19:25 This is a Final Project for my Communication Technologies course I just finished. It was worth 40% of my final grade and took about a month of filming. It is the story of a teen being affected by peer pressure and the things he is forced to do cause him to make great mistakes and ruin his life. Im uploading this to share what I have been doing for the past few days (this is one of the reasons I havent gotten around to uploading) but I thought I might put this up to show you guys Im still alive and I will begin to upload after my exams are done this week. Keep in mind I know this video is no masterpiece but I did invest ALOT of time into it so please be nice in the comments, a couple dozen hours of my time has gone into this and sadly many of the scenes we filmed had to be cut out because of the time cap. If you did enjoy please consider RATING this video or share it if you want to show your firends. Anyways hopefully you enjoy! How to create custom themes in Gmail

If you've always wanted to use a custom photo as your Gmail background, you now can.

Themes in Gmail are a good way to quickly differentiate between multiple Gmail accounts, as well as adding a little flair to your account. Until now, you were limited to the selection of themes provided by Google. Within the next few days, Google will have completed rolling out the capability to create custom Gmail themes, using your own background photos.

To check if the new themes have been pushed out to your account, go to your Gmail settings and select themes. If the feature's been pushed to your account, you'll see the Light and Dark themes in a new section called Custom Themes.

To use your own background image, select the light or dark custom theme. You can choose a background from Google's featured images, your Picasa Web album, your phone (via the Google+ app), upload an image, or paste a URL. For best results, Google recommends using an image larger than 2,560 x 1,920 pixels.

That's it. Keep in mind that Google Apps users may not have theme support, if it hasn't been enabled by the Apps administrator.

Microsoft Surface Keynote Address – In Living Color

Did you miss Microsofts debut of its flashy new tablet, Surface? If you were on the east coast following the live-blogs, you could be forgiven for missing it since the conference nosed into dinner time. Or, maybe you missed it because you were out of the loop for the past four days, which was about all of the advance that Microsoft gave ahead of yesterdays event. At any rate, if you missed it, you missed it. Youll never see it now. Dems the breaks, kiddos.

Well, well, cant pull a fast one on you, can I? Yes, lament not, dear readers, for there were people yesterday with the presence of mind to capture the entire keynote address on video. The good people at The Verge, for example, were nice enough to upload the full address to YouTube to share with the rest of the world.

Before getting to the keynote address, though, its best to fit on the experience as it was meant to be worn so here again is the promo video that Microsoft released for Surface, complete with a pop-industrial soundtrack that oddly makes you smile when you imagine all those Microsoft execs listening to this while in their pre-conference team huddle.

And now that youre ready, behold the Microsoft Surface keynote address:

So whos excited? Whos a little underwhelmed? Feel free to chime in below with your comments.

How Can I Make My Parents More Tech-Savvy? [Video]

Dear Lifehacker, My parents don't know much about computers. They're barely able to operate their DVR. I'm always the one they call for help. While I don't mind helping some of the time, I think it would be better if they learned a few skills of their own. How can I bring my parents into the technical age without frying their brains?

Sincerely, Child of the Technically Challenged

Dear CotTC, First off, it's great that you want to help your parents learn to help themselves, rather than do the work for them. That's often a harder route, but definitely a good one.

Your parents are never going to be you. You've probably figured that one out by now, but when you're making suggestions or helping them through a problem, it's easy to forget. You may love your custom XBMC home theater PC, but that's probably a bit much for your mom or dad. You may know what "make a new Finder window" or "open Windows Explorer" means, but they probably don't. Not only is it important to take a step back, but also know that they're probably never going to catch up with you. Although you may love technology, it's not as important to them and it's not going to be. So be sure you remember who you're dealing with. If they ask you for a recommendation for any kind of gadget, be sure to consider what works best for them rather than you. If they need help with a computer problem, help them with detailed steps. Talk it out like you're seeing it for the first time. You can't expect them to know all terms you've picked up over the years, even if they seem incredibly simple. You probably know this already, but when their tech needs arise it is important to remember. If you're very clear, and you explain things thoroughly, there's a better chance they'll pick it up and remember it next time around. That's better for both of you.

Whenever your parents have a technical issue, make a tutorial. (There's actually a site to help you do that called Teach Parents Tech.) You could even make a wiki or start a YouTube channel so they can easily refer back to every one you maketext, video, or otherwise. Video is generally your best bet, as most people will have an easier time learning visually, and it can actually be a lot easier for you to make. If you already have a great screencasting tool, chances are it uploads to YouTube or some other video sharing site. If not, you can always use Screencast-O-Matic or Jing for free.

When creating the screencast, it's best to plan it out a little bit in advance. This doesn't mean you need to spend a ton of time on it, but just take a minute to think about the steps you're going to cover in advance so your instructions are clear and succinct. For an example, just watch the video on your left. It's about a minute long, covers a simple task, and highlights important details that are easy to overlook because they're second-nature to tech-savvy people like yourself. It may seem redundant to mention what things look like when the they can be seen on screen, but doing so gives them prominence and provides additional clarity to your instructions.

Not every task is suited for video. You also may not be in a place where you can make a good video, or your parents are the type who prefer to read. Whatever the case may be, if you're writing out your instructions it is best to provide them in short steps. Here's what you want to avoid:

Those instructions are bad because they do a few things wrong. For starters, they're not specific enough for a novice to understand. Several important details are missed. Also, the second step combines two steps. Here are what the instructions should look like:

These instructions are good for novices because they describe the tasks visually and do not skip simple but important information. Regardless of how you provide your instructions, these are important things to keep in mind. These are just general tips, however, and you know your parents better than most. Consider their personal technical shortcomings and the sort of things they tend to miss when you're providing your instructions. While it might be a slow road ahead, teaching them instead of doing the job for them will take the burden of tech support off your back and make their lives easier, too. Good luck!

Love, Lifehacker

Verizon Rolls Out Blazing 300Mbps FiOS Quantum

Once upon a time, the world was ecstatic to get 56Kbps dial-up Internet access. In real years that wasnt that long agoless than 15 years ago, but in technology years it may as well be prehistoric. Now Verizon is introducing 300Mbps broadband service, but it will cost you.

Verizon has moved beyond regular FiOS with new FiOS Quantum services that promise to blow the doors off the Internet. Verizon is offering FiOS Quantum packages: up to 300Mbps downloads with 65Mbps upload speeds.

Verizon FiOS Quantum delivers mind-blowing 300Mbps broadband speed.According to Verizon, at 300MBps you can download 10 songs (approximately 50MB) in only 1.4 seconds, or download a 5GB HD movie in just over two minutes. Compare that against the slow 15Mbps entry-level plan, which takes an estimated 26.7 seconds to download the same songs, or a painstaking 45 minutes to download the movie.

The upload aspect is becoming more and more important as well, though. In years gone by, the Internet was more or less a one-way street of data flowing from servers on the Internet to endpoint systems. There was little need for data to flow the other direction. However, social networking, and cloud-based data, music and photo services have changed that.

The 15Mbps FiOS plan has an upload speed of 5Mbps. Verizon claims that uploading 200 photos (an estimated 250MB) at that speed will take almost seven minutes. Using the 300Mbps FiOS Quantum with 65Mbps upload speed cuts that down to about 30 seconds.

Verizon FiOS, and the new FiOS Quantum plans are primarily residential. Most individuals can probably make do just fine with 15Mbps, or spend a little extra cash for the 50Mbps tier. Small and medium businesses (SMBs)might benefit from the blazing 300Mbps speeds, thoughthe more PCs or devices trying to share the connection, the more the additional bandwidth is necessary. SMBs will also appreciate the ability to upload large files and data for clients in a fraction of the time.

There are two downsides to the 300Mbps FiOS Quantum. The first is that Verizon FiOS isnt available in all areas, so you may not be able to get FiOS at all. The second is that the 300Mbps FiOS Quantum package is $210 per month ($205 if you agree to a two-year contract).

The 150Mbps FiOS Quantum service (with the same 65Mbps upload speed) may be more sensible in many cases. At $100 a month (or $95 on a two-year contract), it costs less than half of the top of the line service while still delivering more than adequate broadband speeds.

Longmont police go high-tech

LONGMONT -- It probably isn't what comes to mind when you think "Robocop," but Longmont police are using more and more technology to enforce the laws, and officers said it is saving time and improving accuracy.

A license plate reader can read and cross-reference hundreds of license plates with crime databases in an hour.

A computer system can pull data from car computers from moments before a crash to help investigators reconstruct accidents.

Officers use laser GPS systems to diagram accident scenes and upload the information directly into computers as part of the accident investigation and reconstruction.

And a speed-detecting laser gun has a mounted camera that determines whether motorists are following too closely.

Longmont Police Traffic Sergeant Mike Bell said the tools are speeding up investigations and helping to keep officers on the streets by keeping them out of court for ticket challenges, especially in cases involving the camera. It records a car as it is clocked and shows its following distance from another vehicle. Bell said motorists have given up on challenging tickets once they saw the video.

"We're talking about cars that are following right on someone's rear bumper," he said. "Where the problem comes in is most people will say, 'Well, I wasn't speeding. I drive this way all the time.'"

Bell said the standard for following distance is at least two car lengths under 45 mph and three car lengths at speeds faster than 45 mph.

The technology takes out the doubt of an officer's observations by keeping a video record of the incident.

Bell also said that accident investigations are sped up by saving officers time mapping accident scenes. The laser measurements and GPS software are also sometimes used to map other scenes, such as a recent discovery of a transient man's body. He died of natural causes, the coroner ruled, but police initially treated the area as a possible crime scene and carefully

NBA Finals: League uses social media to take fans courtside during finals in Oklahoma City

The NBA's Jim Poorten stands on the basketball court of the Chesapeake Arena and uses an iPhone to snap a photo of the action on the court. He runs deep into the arena to connect to Wi-Fi and upload it as quickly as possible to one of the NBA's official Twitter accounts.

NBAs Jim Poorten, right, uses his iPhone to take a picture of Oklahoma Citys James Harden before a recent game. Poorten will post it within minutes to one of the NBAs social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. PHOTO BY NATHANIEL S. BUTLER / NBAE

Within three minutes, more than 50 people have reposted retweeted the photo to their own fans as they watch the NBA Finals action between the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder unfold on Twitter.

As Poorten bounces around the arena snapping photos and taking video with more access than most to the players, he wants to give the public the fly on the wall viewpoint, he said. As he shoots, he keeps in mind the stories and scenes in the arena that he would retell to his friends after the game one photo offering courtside includes rapper Lil Wayne and NBA super fan James Jimmy Goldstein.

Poorten's actions mimic the thousands of fans throughout the arena who are telling the NBA Finals story in their own ways to friends via their preferred social media sites. The NBA's extensive social media web, however, is in place to cater to an audience of millions of people around the world who want to feel as if they are in Oklahoma City and Miami for the NBA Finals, watching and analyzing the games courtside.

This operation involves cameras placed high in arena rafters, video teams and photographers on the ground, people as far away as New Jersey and New York monitoring trending topics and other social media activity and editing photos, former NBA players-turned-TV analysts keeping NBA TV vibrant with new shows, others updating stats for the NBA mobile applications and NBA.com and more. The teams come from NBA Digital, NBA Entertainment, league partner Turner Sports Digital and from throughout the NBA operation.

[Miku Hatsune] This is the Happiness and Peace of Mind Commitee [English Subtitles] – Video

16-06-2012 12:10 I recommend you smile, for your own safety. Also, if you are wondering who Undine/Ondine is, scroll below for some notes. This neat song immediately caught my attention last night. It is one of most "different" songs I've heard in awhile. I've never been the biggest fan of dystopian or "horror" style Vocaloid music but this one is pretty cool. After getting trolled by the opening you get to hear "Big Brother Miku" proselytizing in front of roaring brainwashed crowds, set to some awesome eletrorock style music...it's pretty sweet. Hearing Miku say "Minna sama no shiawase ga, wareware no shiawase" (Your happiness, is our happiness) is just sooo perfect! Especially when it's also made by one of the great producers, t.komine/UtataP. Translation Notes: -OK So about Undine/Ondine. This creature/person is a water elemental/water nymph of Greek and German legend. They supposedly sing with a beautiful voice and seek to marry a human to gain a soul. However in some stories, like the unfortunate German knight mentioned in the song, those who are unfaithful to an undine are cursed with death. While it's a bit abstract here, you can see how this fits with the song. The Ondine/Miku character is singing with her beautiful voice (spreading the message of "happiness") and if she is not obeyed and her subjects do not remain faithful, well, she'll kill them. Seems simple enough 🙂 (More info: -Some fellow Japanese-readers will probably want to point out that ?????? ...
