VR Done Quick: How Virtual Reality Changes The Game For Speedrunning – UploadVR

A lot of people would classify VR speedrunning as a niche of a niche. The speedrunning community, while still growing, is rather small and the list of those willing to speedrun VR titles is even smaller. But despite that, some speedrunning VR owners are still out there gunning for the best time in their favorite games.

Its obvious that few developers and streamers have actually put thought into speedrunning VR titles since fundamental features that support the community arent there in most cases. You cant really interact with a Twitch chat when immersed in VR and there is no clear way to compare your run time against others in real-time. Those two features may seem insignificant, but they actually make speedrunning a more focused and community-oriented event.

And while providing a solution for those two issues will help immensely, speedrunning in VR still has two huge roadblocks standing in its way. The disconnect that happens when viewers are watching VR on a regular computer screen and the physicality of the platform make speedrunning a difficult task.

When Tristan Hodges from Fox Leap Games was developing his Mario 64 inspired platformer, Gem Hunter, he did so with speedrunners in mind. He implemented a timing overlay, so runners could compare their run with the top times while playing. And while the implemented features made runs easier, he couldnt minimize the disconnect viewers had when watching VR on a regular computer screen.

There is a disconnect between what someone sees in their headset in virtual reality, and what someone sees on a 2D screen, said Hodges. All the people watching dont have the same experience, it might even be nauseating for some.

Thats a different beast compared to traditional speed running, where there is no difference between what the streamer and viewer is seeing. The most popular speedrunners have thousands of viewers because they play games like Mario 64, Hodges said. Popular games that still give them that one-to-one connection with the streamer.

That isnt the case with VR gaming. With VR, youre experiencing your own reality, Hodges said. Its all around you. If there is a big zombie behind you, it feels like theres a big zombie behind you. The viewers wont get that, they only get what they see on a 2D plane.

A possible solution for this disconnect is a third person, drone-like view that plops viewers above the action, allowing them to see everything and removing them from the nauseating first person view, similar to what VREAL is aiming to do.

Like the VR spectating in DOTA 2, Hodges said. It throws players into this floating god mode where you literally get to be a giant watching over the map.

But the viewers arent the only ones having issues enjoying VR runs, the speedrunners themselves face a few big challenges that really prevent them from successfully completing new runs.

The main holdup is the increased difficulty that runners have to deal with in VR. With regular speed running you still have to do a lot with precision but its not as physical, said SuperhotVR speedrunner Ben Massey. Each movement is affecting the game drastically.

The physicality of virtual reality makes the precision required for runs that much harder to master. Its a lot harder to be precise because youre not getting all the information, Hodges said. In a 2D game you can see the environment around you, in Zelda you can see your character and which exact pixels youre standing on.

Its difficult to see the exact spot youre occupying in VR and how that might affect the run at any given time. So much of speedrunning is having a route perfected, all the way down to how each movement is placed. Youre using your whole body in VR even though youre usually just floating existence, Hodges said. You have hands, feet, but nothing in between.

You have to be far more careful, Massey said. There is so much room for error.

VR has a lot of obstacles to overcome before it becomes a popular platform for the speedrunning community. But before that happen itll need to have a bigger install base with games that people really love. People watch games that they care about, Massey said. And if they dont want to or cant afford it then they wont care.

The barrier of entry for VR hasnt gotten low enough for a lot of runners to jump on board, especially with the amount of games that people arent interested in speed running.

VR has a lot of games that are more experiences rather than actual games, like gun simulators instead of full-on FPSs, Massey said. Youre kind just playing around with those, they arent gonna be speedrun.

Even if VR doesnt grow into a worldwide phenomena, developers and runners who are already in the thick of it are confident that a space will get molded for speedrunning in a virtual space.

It all comes down to having a passion for speedrunning, and that comes from the same place, no matter what platform youre playing on. I found a game that I love and played it over and over again, grinding for hours to get the best time, Massey said. Once the games come, the community will follow.

EE brings gigabit mobile speeds to London – Alphr

London has some of the slowest 4G speeds in the country, according to the London Assembly, but if Qualcomm and EE have it their way, its about to receive a bit of a boost. At an event in Wembley Stadium, Qualcomm, EE and Sony have demonstrated for the first time in the capital city a live Gigabit 4G network connection.

Using a Sony Xperia XZ Premium hooked up to a laptop running Ooklas eponymous Speed Test app, Qualcomm demonstrated the phone achieving download speeds of up to 765Mbits/sec over the live network. Yep, you read that right: 765Mbits/sec (and no, that's not a typo). At the claimed top speed of 750MB/sec, this is 18 times faster than my home broadband connection and more than twice as fast as the the UKs speediest commercial fibre broadband according to EE.

Upload speeds are not nearly as rapid but, at a potential 110Mbits/sec, are still nothing to turn your nose up at. Thats 15 times the speed of my home broadband upload speed.

Impressive stuff, but this isnt the first time weve seen Qualcomm crowing over stonking cellular speeds. Back in January 2017, I witnessed the very first Gigabit 4G network debuted live in Sydney Australia, Australia. Since then, gigabit 4G (or LTE) technology has been implemented in 26 networks across 18 countries worldwide.

It's the first time Ive seen speeds like this running on a smartphone, however, and it's all the more impressive to see it demonstrated this close to home.

To get speeds like this, you need the right hardware and, right now, the number of handsets that can take full advantage are thin on the ground. Basically, you need a phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and the Qualcomm X16 modem or a Samsung S8/S8 Plus with Exynos 8895; plus, the phone needs to have a 4x4 MIMO antenna array.

Only the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, the HTC U11 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Pluscurrently meet these requirements; the OnePlus 5, which also has a Snapdragon 835 and an X16 modem inside, only has a 2x2 MIMO antenna array and its top speed is a slower 600Mbits/sec as a result.

As a happy coincidence, I happened to have all bar the HTC U11 in my bag when I attended the event and, at the risk of busting dramatically though my data limit, I set about testing the handsets in (slightly) less controlled conditions.

The results were eye-opening. My Sony XZ Premium reached 349Mbits/sec and my Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus topped out at 369Mbits/sec. Thats slower than the earlier, official test but bear in mind I was running these tests at the same time Qualcomm was running other demonstrations, including the streaming of two 4K Amazon Prime video streams simultaneously.

The OnePlus 5 was the most ponderous of the bunch, achieving only 68Mbits/sec, showing the benefit of 4x4 MIMO over its 2x2 MIMO antenna array.

Right now, gigabit 4G is as yet limited in scope in the UK. Theres the Wembley stadium installation, one at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium and coverage at London Tech City. But the technology will soon roll out to other areas, focusing on more densely populated areas such as London, Birmingham and Manchester.

EE says it predicts the rollout will closely follow the pattern for the rollout of its cat6 coverage, which is now offered at just shy of 3,000 sites. Wherever we have a dense population we will increase the spectral capacity to be able to meet the demand, said Tom Bennett, director of network services and devices at EE.

It may be some time before you can experience such speeds yourself, but thegood news is that when it does eventually reach your area, you may not need to pay a premium a to get it: gigabit 4G will be available to all EE customers on 4G Max plans.

When trying to sell someone on the wonder that is virtual reality, its better to show than to tell. Explaining the incredible immersion that a solid virtual reality experience provides is difficult to put into words, but showing someone playing or allowing a person to play themselves is the quickest path to amazement.

Mixed reality is a way to give spectators a window into virtual experiences, showing how the player inhabits a virtual world. MR is becoming a crucial element for those wanting to share their adventures in VR. RecentlyOculus announced via their blogthat theyve added native MR support to their flagship PC VR headset, the Oculus Rift.

Though the new integrated support is only available for specific Rift applications MR gives content creators, advertisers, and more a chance to share VR in-person or online. There are a couple things the Oculus team recommendsyou keep in mind if you want to take advantage:

If you have the time and space to produce such a setup, it behooves you to get it together and add another layer to the VR experience for your patrons, viewers, or whomever else it is that you intend to serve. Oculus is fairly receptive to feedback as well, so it could serve you to get a foot in the door early and help to shape this new feature.

Theres a lot of physical exertion in a great deal of virtual experiences, some designed specifically with this in mind and others reaching such heightened levels simply as a byproduct of gameplay design. Boxing, otherwise known as the sweet science, is known to have one of the most grueling training regiments of all sports and a handful of VR games try to whip you into fighting shape with varying results.

Currently there are decent boxing experiences to be found but none with a major recognized name or fighter supporting them. Thats going to change in the near future as former champion Manny Pacquiao is teaming up with Korean game developer Appnori for a new game.

Social media and boxing publications are abuzz after Pacquiaos questionable loss to Jeff Horn a few days ago, a decision that seems to have completely shocked the boxing community. While this VR partnership may seem like poor timing, Pacquiaos spot in boxing history is forever solidified.Pacquiao shared in the press release that connecting boxing to the technology is one of his dreams and with rising VR tech, I [am] one step forward to my dream.

Theres not much known about the game just yet other than the fact that Pacquiao would be your trainer in the game. Once youve reached a certain point, you can take your skills online and face other fighters. In a unique twist, if you perform well online, youll apparently be invited to a real-life tournament where Pacquiao may referee. The Appnori team is viewing this as a unique spin on VR Esports. The social media campaign is very simple says Ashley Camac, director of the USO San Diego downtown center. [Its] just to raise awareness and show the troops overseas that were supporting them.

To participate, people just have to take a picture of themselves flexing their bicep and upload it to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. with the hashtag #Flex4Forces.

The nationwide campaign hopes to show service members on the front lines that there is strength in numbers and their country stands with them.

I think sometimes [an overseas] service member can feel disconnected, Camac explains. [But] when they can see their country is supporting their efforts, it makes a huge difference in their mind.

The effort has garnered celebrity attention from people like Brett Favre, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Katharine McPhee and even the Rockettes.

I think its always just an amazing feeling when you can see that what youre doing and the work youre doing to protect the lives of Americans that thepeople in this country are showing that support right back, Camac tells NBC 7.

Criconet which is still in its BETA version, is a social networking site for cricket lovers, where cricket aficionados can exchange messages, ideas, update their cricketing status, ask cricketing questions, as well as upload cricketing pictures and videos.

The Criconet digital platform has an instant messaging service along with multiple forums and chat rooms. It allows users to create fans clubs, participate in cricket-related polling, sell and exchange treasures, upload photos and videos and even seek expert advice from coaches around the globe. In an exclusive interview with EE Veer Sagar, Founder Criconet explains all about his cricket friendly venture.

How did you come up with the idea of Criconet?

When face book took off and I saw every one document everything on face book it struck me why don't we have a similar platform but only for cricket lovers and cricket related. So we worked on this idea. Just when we thought we had a good thing the question in our mind was how do we pay for it now and ongoing. Initially was I going to fund from my savings. We talked to some IPL team management to sponsor this as a means of keeping connection with their fans in the off season. We got no traction. To get revenues we needed to get something unique and binding as well habit forming. We designed a game of cricket that is played with dice and can be played between two friends or with the system. The game had to be simple and unique as we were operating on shoe string budget. The game gave the site a unique and a possibility of getting revenues.

What is the kind of experience you are looking forward to build with the platform?

I am trying to build a total cricketing experience for every members of the family and their friends. They share their views, their experiences, their questions and use it not only as an exchange platform but also a sounding board and information gathering source. We do not provide any content. The user creates their own content and shares as per choice.

The website is still in its beta version, how long before it completely takes off?

We kept it Beta as this my first experience of designing something where the touch and feel is more important than the content. In my over 50 years of IT experience I had not done anything like this. So I wanted to get as many views and comments as possible. We are now beginning to freeze the development and hope to have a popular launch when the Australian team comes to India in September for ODI matches.

What is your USP?

The USP is that it a one shot platform for everything cricketing that one may want to see. One can pass comments, upload videos of matches you are seeing or playing exchange views , ask questions relating to cricket whether it be kit, coaching centers or advice. In addition it has a unique easy to play luck based game of cricket played with dice CRICONET -THE SUPER OVER . In this game you are as good as the next person.

What are you expansion plans in 2017? Will we see any celebrity association with it?

Our stated objective is to be a total site for cricket lovers. We have already added individual coaching where one can upload a video of bowling action or batting stroke and you get the whole of India to respond (everyone in India is a cricket expert) or get a certified cricket coach to give you advice. By end of September we will launch "distant remote coaching" where nets of cricket academies will be linked to CRICONET and a senior coach will monitor and coach. We plan to create franchisees and have back office for cricket training and support globally. We are talking to persons in Nepal, Kenya and USA .

Along with coaching we are also tying up to offer cricket medicine for aches and pains associated with cricket.

We are also tying up to offer cricket tourism both in bound and out bound from Criconet site where groups of Indians will be taken aboard to watch the matches of the Indian team in that country or bring people from outside to India and take them to watch a series in India.

We are not looking at any celebrity association unless that celebrity comes in as a coach or giving tips on the game to individual(s). Celebrity is expensive business and currently out of our budget.

When will we see the mobile app?

The site runs on mobile currently. However we have just initiated the process of converting it to a mobile app and our target for that is September along with the removal of Beta tag.

Vevo takes swipe at YouTube as it pushes brand safety message – Marketing Week

Vevo is looking to capitalise on the YouTube scandal by pushing a message of quality to attract ad dollars.

During a press lunch last week, Vevos CEO Erik Huggers explained that since joining the company two years ago, he has been on a mission to overhaul the business.

This hasprimarily been focused on getting the basics right by relaunching its app, producing its own content and by bringing out new features such as Watch Party, which allows audiences to virtually bring their friends together and curate a playlist of music videos. Or as Huggers describes it: A crowdsourced music video channel with chat.

He added: In the last two years, weve completely overhauled our technology stack top to bottom. Theres not a single line of code left from what I found when I joined the company two years ago.

Vevo is primarily known for distributing its content through YouTube, but it is eager to change this perception. Now the brand claims to have its technology sorted out, it plans to make a push for establishing the Vevo brand as more than just that watermark you see on YouTube playlists. Instead, it wants to become a youth brand and rival to YouTube that stands for true quality.

Huggers said anupcoming marketing campaign will notinvolve any above-the-line activity but will instead be pushed out through its own videos on more than 60,000 artist channels. It will also run the campaign through other social platforms.

Of the campaign, hepredicted: I have high hopes and expectations that well start to create a bit more [of an understanding] among people that YouTube and Vevo are two different things.

Our house inventory is at such mind-blowing global scale that we think it will have real cut-through and be an opportunity to establish ourselves as a youth culture brand.

Thisfocus on quality seems a deliberate attempt to capitalise on the recent YouTube brand safety scandal following an investigation by The Times, which saw advertisements placed next to extremist and pornographic content. In response, many brands pulled their ads from the platform although some have since returned.

As it unfolded, Vevo said it checked in with other publishers on YouTube, who claimed they had all seen a decline in revenue due to brands pulling back from the platform. Vevo, on the other hand, says it saw the opposite it has already hit its commercial targets for the first half of the year.

The brand safety piece plays into our favour. The message that professionally created premium content distributed on an open platform like YouTube creates a brand safe environment has resonated really well, he said.

All these open platforms, whether its Facebook or Twitter, they have real challenges that anyone can upload anything. While machine learning, AI or whatever fancy buzzword may in the future be able to solve it, at this point in time the safest way is premium licensed content. Its all we do.

Vevo distancing itself from YouTube is also linked back to its eagerness to collect its own unique audience data something that the Google-owned video platform currently does not share with brands.

As a result, the brand is expected to promote its own app, where people have to register to use the service, more heavily in future. Huggers is in no rush to copy competitors such as Spotify and roll out a subscription service, however.

While he is excited about having a dual revenue stream of advertising and audience subscriptions, he is concerned about the current landscape of subscription services.

He concluded: I got very concerned about what Id call subscriptionitus. There are so many niche subscription services out there now. I got worried about the ability to get to scale with that, given there were so many different competing alternatives out there. Does that mean thats never going to happen? No its a matter of timing.

Your admission documents are the most important documents for any student when that time of the year rolls around. Make sure you have everything that is required, because it would be devastating if your application is thrown out based on a missing document. Most institutions will have a list of requirements on their websites, which you should definitely print and tick off the items as you gather it.

Many students do not receive any accounts in their names to prove their address. You can get a letter from a government department to confirm your residential address, or simply let your parents write an affidavit stating that you live under their roof.

Writing a statement of purpose is going to be the most important document in the admissions process. Look at sop for scholarship samples if you are trying to receive a scholarship. Your statement of purpose needs to reflect your achievements, skills and personality. Put as much time and effort into writing your sop, because it can be a deciding factor.

Gather recommendation letters as early as possible, because this becomes a huge delay for many students. Other people might not see the urgency in your request, so it is important to give them enough time to write good recommendation letters. You might need more recommendation letters when doing your statement of interest for internship. Do not put these individuals under pressure, so that you can always go back and ask for another letter.

Many students are broke and do not have a lot of money, but keep in mind that you will have to pay an application fee. Try and get your money in order before applying, so that this does not become an obstacle for you. Remember, this application could change your future and it is going to change the way you are perceived and the way you see the world. This is why you should make every effort to have the correct amount of money when applying.

No excuses will be accepted when you exclude or forget to include certain documents. Always keep in mind that there are a lot of applications coming in and the committee simply choose the best fit for their institution. This is why you have to eliminate any minimal reason to have your application rejected. Your priority right now needs to be to gather all your documents and not forget anything that is required. It might be a bit of a stressful process, but as long as you do the best you can, you are going to be just fine. Also do not feel that a rejection letter is the end of the world. There are many opportunities and you will find the best fit for you. Good luck with your applications and I hope you get that acceptance letter.

Tutoring app for students to AsknTeach – The Straits Times

One of the founders of free tutoring app EduSnap is back with a new peer tutoring app - AsknTeach.

Back in 2013, Mr Chia Luck Yong set up EduSnap as a social enterprise with two Singapore Management University schoolmates, Mr Anders Tan and Mr Shaun Tan, and launched the app the next year.

At the time, the free mobile platform drew attention as it positioned itself as the first of its kind helping Singapore students, and was reported about in major media outlets.

However, by end 2015, the trio parted ways and no longer actively maintained it.

Still believing that parents and students do not have to pay exorbitant fees for tuition, Mr Chia, now 30, decided to develop a new app, which has been available for free download since May.

His new product AsknTeach is similar to EduSnap - students upload questions they need help with - but it focuses on getting other students to answer the questions.

In comparison, EduSnap partnered tuition centres and private tutors to respond to students' queries.

Mr Chia noted that one problem emerged then: There were more people asking questions than there were answering them.

For instance, some private tutors would "burn out" after answering 100 or so questions.

He said: "We were constantly searching for new tutors to fill in for people who had left. We kept trying to find centres that had a lot of teachers."

At the same time, he noticed that a few students on the EduSnap platform were very active in answering other students' questions even though they received no reward.

He believes that with AsknTeach, the feel-good factor of young people helping others will build a community in which older students guide younger students.

Students who prove to be good in answering questions may later be offered a nominal incentive, for instance, $0.50 for a question answered correctly.

Since EduSnap stopped maintenance from end 2015, a number of other tuition or homework help apps have sprung up here in the past two years.

These include SnapAsk - which is active in Hong Kong and Taiwan as well - and home-grown apps such as Ask.ManyTutors and Queri.

Asked whether there was still space in the market for AsknTeach amidst the competition, Mr Chia said he believed that there are still more students with questions than there were people who could answer them.

Eventually, Mr Chia hopes to build an extension to the app that will provide learning resources - in which it works with professional tutors with good track records to upload content, such as online lectures, that users would pay for.

Students who have used other free educational apps said they would not mind trying out AsknTeach if it can help them.

Novia Antony, 16, a Secondary 4 student at Yuan Ching Secondary School, for one, said she liked the app's concept: "I can reply to people's questions and I can also post questions and try and get solutions."

However, she added that unless the app had enough users, it may not be efficient as answers would not be immediate.

While Mr Chia has not started marketing AsknTeach, it is now available for free download on app stores and has garnered about 100 users through word of mouth.

He has invested an undisclosed sum into the new venture, saying only that it was more than the $100,000 to $200,000 he had put into EduSnap.

Following the instructions is very easy remove the sticky white paper, stick to your skin, and then peel off the black backing. Remember that you can only stick it down once, so place itwisely.

Use the alcohol wipe to dab onto the ink pad. Dont go too close to the edges or your tattoo could bleed.

Microwave your provided cloth, fold in half, place on the tattoo, and press extremely hard for the first 30 seconds. Continue holding in place for the next 15 minutes. It is super important to not move the cloth. Since I am a multi-tasker, this was very hard for me. In return, I paid for the consequences in the results, which was a bleedy tattoo. Avoid my mistake do not move the white cloth.

Once your 15 minutes is up, peel off the tattoo and wait for it to dry. Rinse with soap and water and wait 24 hours for the tattoo to fully develop.

Here comes India’s data behemoth: GSTN will handle 320 crore transactions a month – Economic Times

Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), the information-technology backbone of India's new tax regime, is a data-storage behemoth. Nearly 80 lakh businesses will upload details and carry out transactions on the network. After Aadhaar, India has seen such a large scale of IT operations in GSTN.

GSTN, a not-for-profit private limited company, has 51 per cent equity of five private institutions -- HDFC Bank Ltd (10 per cent), HDFC Ltd (10 per cent), ICICI Bank Ltd (10 per cent), NSE Strategic Investment Corporation Ltd (10 per cent) and LIC Housing Finance Limited (11 per cent).

The central government has 24.5 per cent equity in the GSTN, whereas state governments, two Union territories and empowered committee of state finance ministers together hold another 24.5 per cent stake in it. India's leading IT company Infosys is managed service provider of GSTN.

With nearly 80 lakh users, 1.2 lakh transactions in a second and 320 crore transactions in a month, GSTN needs to have a mind-boggling capacity. It has designed its system so that it can handle 60,000 users per second. It can increase the capacity if the traffic increases.

"To size the system, looking at an average of 127, we took 3 times that, 400, as the average number of invoices. Multiplied by 80 lakh tax payers, it gives you 320 crore invoices per month. We planned for storage which was double of this requirement," GSTN chairman Navin Kumar said in an interview to a business magazine.

GSTN is opening the facility for upload of invoice data from July 16. To facilitate uploading, it has given an an Excel-based offline utility. "They can download this on their computer and they can keep adding the invoice data on that Excel and this tool will import this upload this to our system. The tool can handle 19,000 invoices in one go. It takes 17 seconds. For a medium enterprise with 50,000 invoices in a month, we are going to suggest that you upload every week," Kumar said.

Won't a system that receives so much traffic remain down often? Kumar says out of nearly 80 lakh taxpayers, 66 lakh have been able to come on the website, register and submit the application and get their provisional IDs. This has proved that the system is efficient enough to handle mega traffic.

GSTN is prepared to handle increase in traffic. At present, the capacity is for nearly 80 lakh users but it can be expanded about 5% every year, considering that the number of taxpayers might increase at that rate.

With such a mammoth user base and so many transactions in a month, GSTN needs to have robust technological infrastructure to handle billions of transactions. Even small glitches can mean major disruptions.

When it opened its portal to taxpayer registration in November, it suffered a cyber attack aimed at disrupting services and bringing down the host system. It suffered another cyber attack in which a malware creates a Trojan, which can execute unwanted actions from the user's end. GSTN has put in place systems to prevent malware attacks. It is setting up a hi-tech security monitoring and analytics centre to forewarn on cyber threats and secure the IT system handling over 300 crore invoices a month.

New Open-Source Platform Maps the Provenances of Artworks – Hyperallergic

Before arriving at its current home, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Titians famed Europa hopped around Europe, switching owners for nearly 300 years. It traveled through the United Kingdom, passing through the hands of earls, lords, and art dealers; it spent some time in Paris, owned at one point by the Duc dOrleans; and, prior to that, it belonged to the Spanish Royal Collection in Madrid. In short, its provenance is complicated.

Thanks to a new website, however, tracing such complex migrations of paintings is about to get easier. Launched by Boston University professor Jodi Cranston, Mapping Paintingsis an open-source, searchable platform for compiling provenance data for individual artworks (not just paintings, despite its name), from owners to past locations to details of sales or transactions. It allows you to select artworks of interest and visualize their records across time and space, as plotted on a map. The map for Europa, for instance, begins in Venice, where Titian worked on the piece between 1560 and 1562, before it moved to Madrid to enter the collection of King Philip II. Each known address that was once home to the painting is marked and numbered sequentially, so you can easily follow its path from Europe to America.

Cranston created the platform because she hadnt seen anything similar available to art historians, her target user base. It emerged from her first project, Mapping Titian, which focused only on the Italian painters works. One particularly neat feature of Mapping Paintings is that it lets you filter through its database and overlay the paths of selected artworks on one map. So you can compare how different pieces by the same artist have traveled or where artworks currently owned by the same museum came from.

I think that its important to visualize this information, Cranston told Hyperallergic. Provenance information is in printed catalogues and on some museum websites, but visualizing the movement of these artworks allows users to recognize their objecthood and also not to get bogged down in concerns about authenticity and pedigree that often come with provenance information. Sometimes seeing that an artwork went somewhere unexpected is more impactful than reading it in a long list of text.

Besides contributing new individual entries to the database, users can also publish what the site deems a project a custom-made map tracking the movement of any number of artworks whose images you upload and whose provenances you enter yourself. All projects are sent to an administrator for review; only those that are accepted as accurate will be added to the online library.

Currently, the vast majority of works on Mapping Paintings which is funded by Boston University and the Kress Foundation arrive from its Titian-centric forebear, with Cranston drawing data from catalogues and museum websites. Works from the Kress Collection, which contains over 3,000 works of European art, will join the platform next, with the upload possibly completed by early fall. While Cranston created the website primarily with academics and curators in mind, she also hopes members of the general public will explore its records, which reveal information that museums dont often highlight.

I think that many visitors to museums dont realize that these artworks had interesting lives before they arrived on the museum walls, and its neat to think about what these artworks witnessed and who else saw them, Cranston said. It deepens the viewing experience and brings history to life.

Hands-On With Valve’s Knuckles Prototype Controllers – UploadVR

Editors Note: Valve has started shipping the prototypeKnuckles controllersto select VR developers in limited quantities. UploadVR hasnt gotten its hands on a pair just yet, so weve reached out to the development community to see what they think. This article is a contribution from Denny Unger, Co-Founder, CEO, and Creative Director of Cloudhead Games, the studio behind The Gallery: Episode 1 The Call of the Starseed and Episode 2 Heart of the Emberstone.

User interfaces in virtual reality start with your hands. We know that now with the Oculus Touch and the HTC Vive, but even when VR was simply a screen strapped to your head many felt that hands were the future. We began to develop The Gallery on the first Oculus devkit with the Razer Hydra (a Sixense technology) to deliver surrogate hand tracking and body presence back in 2013. And when Valve invited Cloudhead and the first wave of developers to see what would eventually be known as the Vive, Valve showed a commitment to that same vision. Now Valve has invited us and a new wave of developers to begin working with their latest prototypethe SteamVR Knuckles, a wearable VR controller that tracks not just your hand, but each finger too.

Back in 2014, we didnt realize exactly how accurate SteamVR tracking wasthe whole notion of roomscale VR was almost incomprehensible. Up until that point, there was still some motion latency in VR, so you never felt completely attached to the actions in your hands. But once the SteamVR Lighthouses started tracking objects in a 3D space, it was a deep and immediate connection of, Holy crap, thats actually my hand in VR.

Our goal then was to deliver an experience where the player doesnt have to think about the controller, and has only natural, gestural interactions. We wanted to demonstrate why this kind of inputyour hands themselveswas meaningful. When we received our first Vive devkit (wired at the time) we were taping them to our hands in order to feel more immersed, and we even spoke to Valve about crude ways they could strap the controller on.

Those early Vive prototypes already showed an incredible level of fidelity, capable of measuring the tiniest fraction of a movement. Its like the Moores Law of motion control; each incremental improvement in tracking brings with it new possibilities. So as soon as you have that kind of fidelity with your hands in VR, you need your fingers to be more purely represented. And thats what the Oculus Touch started to do by bringing capacitive, gestural input to the controller.

Where Touch differs from what the Knuckles offer, however, is that youre still pushing a binary button in the end; Touch feels more grounded in traditional gamepad design. Specifically, you always feel like youre holding something with buttonsand that works perfectly for gun games and sword games. But the Knuckles take that further by removing the abstractions of first-gen VR inputs. Even though it looks like a more complicated device, its actually a much simpler one.

With the Knuckles, youre not holding a controller; it simply straps to your hand and rests in your palm. If you relax your hand into a natural flex, the controller stays put and keeps tracking your fingers. If you reach out to grab an object in VR, your hand wraps around the base of the controller, giving a tangible feeling of grabbing something. That physicality is something you dont get from data gloves, or vision based inputs without any device, and that feeling can then be fine-tuned with haptic feedback. Plus, youre not passing around a sweaty data glove between your friends.

When reaching out to an object with the Knuckles, Im not thinking about the controller Im holding in my hand, because Im not holding one. Im not thinking about how to use my fingers either, because theyre not assigned to a button press. Im not even thinking about my hand, and thats where the magic comes inIm just thinking about grabbing the object, as I would in real life. That entire grasping motion is represented in VR, whether I pinch with two fingers, scoop with my hand, or close my fist around it. The Knuckles track your fingers by the distance they are from the base of the controller (your palm), and represent that movement in VR. Its second nature.

As developers, when we receive prototype hardware like the SteamVR Knuckles, it makes us want to push the capabilities. In the past, thats meant radically rethinking our stack of interactions and locomotion systemsvirtually redesigning the game. Weve written about what these kinds of changes have meant for The Gallery in the past, but the long story short is that new controllers like the Knuckles arent just affecting the complexity of interactions. We now have new possibilities for game mechanics and design that havent and couldnt have been done before. Its to be seen how these controllers will impact Heart of the Emberstone in September, but theyll be a core focus in designing Episode 3.

Think of an interface-heavy app like Tilt Brush. Dials can be intuitive, but using your fingers is organic. Theres a possibility for gestural movements to call functions and navigate dense data; there could be an entire language built out of using your hands to manipulate paint brushes and pencils and sizes and colors. Once you take the mental load of an interface off the playeronce they stop thinking about the controlleryou can leverage that partition into experiential design and organic controls.

The kind of technology that the SteamVR Knuckles offer is not just impactful to the future of input in gaming, but also the future of output. I can go to a social VR space and point to something, or offer a peace sign, or tell somebody to hang loose without having to think about it. The controller doesnt guess your gesture, or snap to a new position, it represents your fingers based on the distance it calculates. The more natural and intuitive the interface, the less we think about hardware. And the less we fixate on hardware, the more present we can be in VR.

Prior to the Knuckles, hardware developers were looking for something that would be more broadly accepted by the general public. Something that resembled a Wiimote, like the Vive wands, or something that when put together resembled a gamepad, like the Touch controllers, meant that VR input was familiar. Strapping an alien device to your hand in first-gen VR would have been too much too fast. But I think it took the evolution of those two controllers to get VR to the point where the public could be comfortable with the idea of a controller strapped to your hand.

There are so many moments in life in which using your hands is a vital part of the experience. There are implications for education and communicationwith audiences who dont generally understand videogame controllersbecause the SteamVR Knuckles open the door to that broader audience. These are pick-up-and-play controllers where you dont have to think about the input, you just reach out and interact in virtual space.

User interface in virtual reality starts with your hands. And once users are empowered in that way, and dont have to be told how to use the technology, the next generation of virtual reality is here.

How many round bales can you make in an hour? – Agriland

The previous John Deere (round)baling record was set in 2012; it stood at 127 bales/hour. It was set using oneof the companys900 Series balers.

Its worth noting that 127 bales/hour equates to 27 or 28 seconds per bale.

The company says that it has since beaten that record, though it wont reveal by exactly how much until it makes that pronouncement in August of this year. In the meantime, John Deere is asking its customers or indeed anyone who can get their hands on one of its 900 Series balers to have a go.

There are some prizes up for grabs; its not just about the glory. Alas, these are limited to oddities such as pressure washers or robotic lawn mowers all bearing John Deere logos of course.

What are the instructions for budding, would-be winners? John Deere is asking participants to: grab a camera or smartphone; start baling; film the escapade in landscape mode with assistance where possible; upload the video to its special Baler Challenge website; and in time see how the results shape up.

There are already sample entries uploaded from enthusiastic participants overseas in Germany and France.

John Deere is running the initiative in a bid to highlight the apparent speed at which its 900 Series balers can operate. That, says the company, is thanks tothe machines innovative approach to bale ejection.

The so-called Fast Release System employs a lightweight rear tailgate that is 40% lighterthan a conventional baler tailgate, allowing it to open and close much faster. This, claims the company, contributes to the balers overall speed of operation.

To provide some context on the Fast Release System, heres a video (below) of a John Deere 990 round baler, working alongside competing machines. Do bear in mind, of course, that this video was shot by a (UK-based) John Deere dealer.

This next, more recent video (below) shows John Deere employees breaking the companys previous record. It also features a 6R Series tractor; the outfit is working in a field of crisp, dry straw.

Of course, Krone also lays claim to the record for the greatest number of round bales made in one hour by a single machine.

Back in 2012, a Comprima F125XC fired out no less than 149 bales in 60 minutes tacklingwheaten straw on a farm in Germany.28t of straw were baled during the record-setting feat.

Will we see a new record set for the most round bales made in a single hour? Indeed, could it even be set here in Ireland? It would probably need to be a big, square field not plagued by a myriad of ill-placed telephone poles or, worse still, pylons. In any case, only time will tell.

Front Defense Review: A Bland Wave Shooter With WWII Flair – UploadVR

HTCs mission with Vive Studios is supposedly to foster the creativity and vision needed to deliver high-quality VR experiences directly to their users. Fund them directly and publish a portfolio of quality content; that was the mission, similar to Oculus Studios. The first two Vive Studios titles Arcade Saga and Virtual Sports (formerly known as VR Sports) are simple and fun, but far from the level of quality people would expect. Then theres Front Defense, which is being developed by the internal HTCteam namedFantahorn Studio.

In Front Defense you take on the role of a soldier in the Allied forces during World War II (WWII) in a fight against the German armies. The concept is to deliver a trusted genre (the first-person shooter) with a popular setting (WWII) to VR in order to attract a more core gaming audience. The problem though is that its just another wave shooterthat lacks the creativity and depth needed to be anything more than a passing curiosity.

Front Defense is split up into four main pieces of content: a shooting range tutorial and three (yes, only three) different levels. You crouch down behind cover, pop up to shoot enemies, reload your gun, throw grenades, and do other WWII shooter things without ever moving from your spot. Youll spend the vast majority of this game hunkered down on your knees miming the presence of a gun in your hands.

After playing PSVR games like Farpoint using the Aim Controller,the absence of a physical object in my hands on the HTC Vive was remarkably noticeable. People have crafted peripherals like that out of PVC pipe and there are even a handful of them in development with massive price tags or Vive tracker requirements, but theres something to be said for a single universal gun accessory thats officially backed and supported by a platform manufacturer like Sony.

Even though its 2017 and VR headsets have been commercially available with hundreds of games for over a year now, the mere fact that Front Defense is a wave shooter doesnt automatically make it a bad game. There are lots of very good wave shooters in VR. But Front Defense lacks any unique design elements or gameplay mechanics to really make it stand out from the pack.

For everything it does well, it falters in a handful of other ways. As an example, reloading weapons like your rifle feels great. You remove the magazine, reach down to get a new one, and slam it into the base of the gun similar to how reloading works in PlayStation VR Worlds The London Heist. But then to remove the pin from a grenade you have to hold it up to your mouth (to simulate pulling it out with your teeth I guess?) and wait a second or two until the sound effect of the pin removing plays, then throw it. Nice idea in theory, poorly executed in practice.

Then there are the issues with enemies. In every level youll just gun down endless waves until the end. Theyre not intelligent and dont operate like any video game soldiers Ive seen in the past 10 years. Often times Id see them just standing on balconies waiting to get shot or blindly running between cover spots with no regard for the bullets peppering their torsos.

That all sounds harsh, but its true. Steam in particular is overrun with new, simplistic wave shooters created by small teams that flood the market with content each and every week. Shoot a few enemies, reload a new wave or level, rinse and repeat. But even some of the most popular early VR wave shooters, such as The Brookhaven Experiment, at least hung their hat on a specific hook such as survival horror to set them apart. That doesnt seem to be the case with Front Defense though.

The honest truth though is that some people are going to enjoy this despite it all. If youre new to VR, love the WWII setting, or just really like shooting guns while wearing a headset, then this isnt a bad game. But in the grand scheme of things with all things considered, Front Defense should have been better.

Front Defense feels like a game that was made without an audience in mind. The dedicated VR users that have enough space (it needs approximately three square meters of room) will have played plenty of VR shooters by now, many that are just better than this. The core gamers a WWII shooter is supposed to appeal to will get bored far too quickly with the lack of depth. And the small sliver of people left in the middle that are hungry enough to buy just another wave shooter will leave disappointed that this isnt a more complete experiencefrom Vive Studios.

They dont form impressions about other persons on the basis of their profile picture. Free Press spoke to some city people to know how they decided their profile picture on Facebook and Whatsapp. Do they form any impression and judge others on the basis of their profile picture?

Most of my profile pictures on social media are based on psychology. Sometimes it also depends on our moods like happiness and sadness. I also put some unique and best photographs of some places which we have visited. Recently, we visited Malaysia with family and uploaded some of its best photographs on social networking sites. We also use some rare or memorable pictures of my work. Yes, sometimes I do judge up to some extent after watching the profile picture of a person like how his or her thinking and personality is. I decide to put a profile picture on the basis of latest photographs or latest check out places or latest party or latest friends wedding photo or some funny photos with friends for expressing several thoughts coming in mind simultaneously. Yes, sometimes it pisses me off when they put profile picture in which I am looking damn bad and they put their best ones.

In such cases, it is essential to highlight our identity. Sometimes I upload some pictures of nature too. We can judge any person or his or her personality up to 23 to 30 per cent after watching profile picture but not completely.

I upload photographs to disseminate information in group. Suppose, I go to visit some place and then put it as profile picture. Sometimes people come to know about that place through the picture only. Nowadays, not only photos but we can upload videos too and it is good. I dont think we can judge a person merely by his/her profile photo.

Generally it is related to my hobbies like trekking, parasailing, cycling, bike riding etc. There are many people including my family and friends who put photos which reflect his or her mood. Sometimes they use some pictures which I dont like but I dont oppose because I think it is his or her choice. I am unable to judge anyones personality seeing profile picture only.

In 2017, US Equestrian is allowing all members to send their age-verification documents before December 14, 2017, at 5pm Eastern time, even if you have already competed in an age-restricted class. But keep in mind this wont be the case for the 2018 competition year. For 2018, you will need to have your horse age-verified before showing at a USEF competition.
